Shattered Planet - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Adam Smith)

Shattered Planet [official site] is an attractive isometric sci-fi roguelike that captured my heart for a while after release. I mostly played on a tablet, whopping aliens during long flights and train journeys, but the PC version is not without charm.

“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in,” Tony Dakota muttered in Scarface>, his face dusted in icing sugar. And here he is, called out of retirement for two new bags of Payday 2 [official site] paid DLC. Ant has arrived in the co-op heist FPS himself as a playable character, armed with a chainsaw and His Little Friend, and a new heist busts into the film’s fancy mansion to bop the boss. This may sound weird but Payday 2 has already crossed over with John Wick> and the Point Break> remake. … [visit site to read more]

This week I’ve mostly been…

  • Sulkily watching other people play the Train Sim World beta.
  • Scampering around The Kingdom of Spiderwebs clutching a map and compass.
  • Skirmishing with handsome 25mm samurai.
  • And improving Time Commanders in my head.

For further details inspect the words milling about below the break like truculent prisoners of war at an early morning roll call. … [visit site to read more]

Other holidays are available.

Having spent a LONG time yesterday explaining to Alice why jamming a Santa hat on a character does NOT an acceptable Christmas update make, I’ve decided to ask YOU:

Which games are doing holiday updates well this year? … [visit site to read more]

Dead by Daylight - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

1v4 multiplayer psycho killer qu’est-ce que c’est fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far ’em up Dead by Daylight [official site] is free to play in full this weekend. If you keep an eye on what’s popular on Steam, you may have noticed it near the top of the most-played games list – or popping in and out of the charts – and wondered what it’s about. Well! You can now see what The Kids are into and briefly feel like you’re ‘down with The Youth’. Soon you’ll be striking up conversations with them on the bus, “What’s your favourite stabbing sound? I like the bone saw!” … [visit site to read more]

Subnautica - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Philippa Warr)

Precursor update

I was wondering which games might make the “Things To Play Over The Christmas Break” list this year when the Subnautica [official site] Precursor update got released. I went through a really big Subnautica love affair earlier in the year, but decided to step away for a few patches as the game is still in early access and I didn’t want to lose the magic by mining out each update in turn. Then Precursor arrived and is tempting me back not only with alien tech and more in the way of narrative but NEW CAVES! … [visit site to read more]

Planet Coaster - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Planet Coaster [official site], thanks to a big update launched last night. The Winter Update has added a snowy new biome, Christmassy new decor like gingerbread buildings, new shops, and new rides including a sleigh ride, bumper cars, and something that does a lot of spinning. Yes, you can now create Elfland and take guests through the seven layers of the candy cane forest, through the sea of twirly, swirly gumdrops, then through the Lincoln Tunnel. On a more practical level, the patch has introduced a few handy new management features too. … [visit site to read more]

theHunter Classic - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brendan Caldwell)

Ridealong is our monthly feature where Brendan travels deep into game worlds to meet, question and journey with the inhabitants that dwell within.> This time, a real-world hunter takes him deer tracking and duck shooting in theHunter.

There s a man making duck noises in the swamp. He raises a tubular horn to his lips and makes the duck sound again and again, looking at the sky as his spine cranes back at an unnatural angle. At his feet a sandy Labrador sits quietly. The man puts the horn away and gets out a shotgun. The next flock of mallards is coming in to land. … [visit site to read more]
