DOOM II - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brittany Vincent)

Back in 2010, a chap named Paul Schneider brought Doom II fans an exciting mod in the form of Unloved [official site]. A traipse through the classic shooter several shades darker (way more than fifty shades) than fans were used to, it was an exercise in serving up entrails as floors and chunks of flesh scattered throughout each level.

Most importantly, it was good>. It could have become its own game, honestly. Oh, wait. It looks like it has! Unloved has broken out on its own as a fully-fledged horror shooter after escaping the confines of Steam’s Early Access. It’s available in full now, in fact, and looks like it’s well worth trying.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Graham Smith)

Sundays are for hanging out with your kid, obviously. Best make this week’s jaunt to the world of videogame worlds and videos a quick one, then.

Leigh Alexander’s Lo-Fi Let’s Play, once syndicated here at RPS, has returned as a Patreon-funded series. Each episode features an old adventure game. No, not LucasArts or Sierra stuff – older and more obscure. The new episode looks at Escape From Rungistan.

Caravan - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brittany Vincent)

I was immediately intrigued by It Matters Games’ Caravan [official site], a simulator that took me back immediately to the days of puttering about in my elementary school computer lab. I fought valiantly for Kid Pix and The Oregon Trail encased in their felt floppy sleeves, and when I won The Oregon Trail that basically cinched the rest of the day for me. Caravan, so far as I can tell, wants to take me back to those simpler times, leaving me free to roam the Orient and the Arabian peninsula, trading and exploring.

BUTCHER - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brittany Vincent)

The 2D shooter Butcher [official site] has its very own release date now, so we can stop talking about how it’ll eventually float down here at “some point.” It’s scheduled to rip into Steam on 5 October, meaning in a few days you too can be blowing through enemies in a pixelated fit of rage.

It also has a cool name that makes me really miss my Kreepsville 666 Diamonte necklace. It’s a cleaver encrusted in cheap crystals, but it makes me feel fancy. Butcher as a game may not make anyone feel fancy in the way a necklace might, but it’s got plenty of blood and guts to spare. And that’s just about the same, really.

DEAD OR ALIVE 5 Last Round: Core Fighters - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brittany Vincent)

If you missed out on playing Dead or Alive 5 Last Round [official site] because you didn’t feel like paying full price for a fighter you’d probably play a few minutes and forget about, sorry about that. You still have to pay full price if you want to play the full game on Steam, but if you’d still rather not, soon you’ll be able to opt for a cut-down free-to-play version to quell that fighting spirit that’s welling up deep within you.

Call of Duty® (2003) - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brendan Caldwell)

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.>

Like Graham, I ve always felt bad for the Brothers In Arms series of games. The WWII shooter was well into its fatigue stage by the time these games got around to doing something intelligent with it. Rocking up to the beaches of Normandy in Medal of Honor or storming the streets of Stalingrad in Call of Duty were excellent set pieces at the time. But neither game came close to making you think about anything that was going on, it was run and/or gun. That’s it. Brothers In Arms introduced a tactical element – and it was simple too. You just had to point at things.

Terraria - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brittany Vincent)

Terraria [official site] has plenty to do already. Have you ever sat and just fiddled with it for a few hours? Interestingly enough, it also utilizes the same font I used in every report I turned in to my Language Arts teacher in middle school (it used to be called Mead Bold back then, but now it’s called Andy). So you’re forgiven if you feel a bit overwhelmed when you look over the Super Terraria World mod, which converts vanilla Terraria into an RPG with quests, NPCs and more.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Hello to you! Merry Saturday to one and all. You’ve likely already been visited by Saturday WAPWAPPWPPAPWAWers, wrapped up in coats and scarves and mittens going door-to-door asking their friends and neighbours what they’re playing, hoping to be invited in for sherry and a steak pie. But since we’re all one big virtual neighbourhood here, tell me: what are you playing this weekend? Here’s what we’re all playing:
