The first episode of Dontnod s multi-award winning adventure game Life Is Strange will be available to download for free tomorrow, publisher Square Enix has announced.
From July 21 onwards, the episodic tale of love, friendship and coming of age is set to offer players a complimentary trip to Arcadia Bay where they ll join Chloe and Max in the game s premier episode Chrysalis. To mark the occasion, Dontnod has released the following trailer:
Although perhaps not for everyone, one of the most impressive things about Life Is Strange is its propensity to affect people in so many different ways. It was Chris s Personal Pick of last year; whereas Phil described it as unfocused but earnest , but nevertheless found it to be one of his favourite games of 2015. Jody MacGregor discussed why a bad ending needn t ruin a great game after finishing Chloe and Max s tale; and Andy shared his thoughts on how it channels Twin Peaks.
If you re yet to try it, you can begin to craft your own slant when Life Is Strange s episode one launches for free tomorrow via its official website.
Allegations were raised earlier this week that James "PhantomL0rd" Varga, a Twitch streamer who according to PCGamesN has or had nearly 1.4 million followers, is also the owner of CSGO skin gambling site CSGOShuffle, which he heavily promoted on his channel without any sort of disclosure. The claims came to light after a hacker who was actually trying to rip the site off discovered Skype logs of conversations between Varga and CSGOShuffle coder Duhau Joris, which he provided to YouTuber Richard Lewis.
There's no photo of Varga standing over a body with a smoking gun in his hand, but Lewis says the exchanges between him and Joris heavily suggest, almost to a degree of certainty, that PhantomL0rd is the owner of CSGOShuffle, and on top of that, he has gambled exclusively with 'house money' taken from the business. The logs he presents in his video would appear to bear that out: Varga makes some rather large payments to Joris, seeks help winning bets, and appears clearly to be the man in charge.
The whole thing has powerful echoes of the recent CSGO Lotto fiasco, in that it appears all but certain that Varga was using his channel to promote a gambling site that he has a financial interest in. This is not allowed by either the FTC or Valve, and Twitch recently clarified its own position on the matter, which is basically that if a streamer breaks a third-party's terms of service, he also breaks Twitch's, and will be punished accordingly.
And that's what appears to have happened to Phantoml0rd, whose Twitch channel has been closed due to terms of service violations. Specific reasons for the shutdown aren't provided, and Varga himself seems to have gone to ground: He hasn't tweeted or posted a video to his YouTube channel since July 16, when he proclaimed ironically, as it turns out that his channel was about to undergo a big change. The CSGOShuffle website is also currently down.
I've reached out to Varga for comment, and will update if and when I receive a reply.
Counter-Strike tournaments are rife with moments of incredible skill as players push themselves to their limits in jaw-dropping performances. These stupefying moments, combining just the right amount of skill, luck and bravado leave people talking for months. In a unique approach to the competitive scene, Valve has taken recognition one step further, immortalising events in-game through graffiti and signs. As CS continues to develop, these memorials embed the competitive history of the game within each map, offering long-term fans a nod of recognition while advertising key moments for new players to look back to.
The most recent commemorative addition to the game came from the recent ESL One Cologne Major, where Team Liquid s Oleksandr s1mple Kostyliev hit two unscoped AWP shots in a row to beat Swedish powerhouses, Fnatic. Entering the B-bombsite on Cache through heaven, s1mple eliminates one player while falling before flicking to a second kill at absurd range. Here's the video.
The moment highlights a spectacular tournament for both Liquid and s1mple, carving their path to a first North American major final. Map creator FMPONE was quick to post a design to twitter. The mockup, which shows an angelic counter terrorist descending while the scope falls from his weapon, has since been added to the game.
There have been many phenomenal individual plays in competitive CS, but SK s Marcelo coldzera David holds what could prove to be CS:GO s true standout moment. At a 15-9 scoreline, Team Liquid needed just one round to secure victory over the Brazilians (then Luminosity Gaming) at the 2016 MLG Colombus Major. With absolutely no margin for error, coldzera led a crucial AWP defence of Mirage s B-bombsite. Here's the video.
Quickly dispatching one player, cold follows up with an unbelievable, unscoped, jumping double-kill. Seemingly unfazed, he then finishes one more player with a sharp, reactive noscope. Such a performance was crushing to Liquid who proceeded to lose the match in a double-overtime. Luminosity, however, went on to win the Major. Tucked away by the van on Mirage s B-site you can now find a winged AWP, adorned by four red skulls taking the place of the gun s scope. The design proved so popular that cold commissioned a tattoo artist to replicate it on his arm.
Swedes Fnatic are no strangers to employing avant-garde tactics in the competitive scene, with player JW well known for his sawed-off shotgun dominance on Cobblestone. At Cologne 2015, Fnatic utilised an aggressive AWP play to push an overtime victory against French side EnVyUs. At $4750 dollars coupled with a lack of flexibility, it s rare to see teams run more than one AWP per round, with more than two all but unheard of. Here's the video.
However, having built an enormous bank of cash for the final round of the half Fnatic chose to empty their reserves. In what must have been the professional equivalent of a jump-scare for EnVyUs apEX, he stepped out to contest the centre of Dust2 only to find himself facing not one, but four AWPs. Gaining an early advantage, many of Fnatic even swapped back to AKs to overwhelm the French side. Resting high over the T s mid sightline, a grinning terrorist now watches over, wielding a ludicrous four sniper rifles.
CS:GO s molotovs are no joke, capable of delaying pushes, dealing serious damage and, crucially, denying bomb plants. With little time left on the clock, even an outnumbered player can make use of a well thrown molotov to win the round. Here's the video.
Would that threat stop Fnatic s Olof olofmeister Kajbjer Gustafsson? Not a chance. At 14 rounds a piece in the 2014 Cologne Major, the bold Swede wasn t about to let a little heat stop their run, completing a full five second defuse while burning, dying just a fraction of a second after the bomb was defused, much to the delight of his team and fans. In one of the first real nods to the competitive scene, Valve added graffiti of a Hazmat-adorned angel, defusing while wreathed in flames.
During 2014-15, Fnatic established themselves as the dominant force in CS, winning titles left, right and centre. Despite this, Fnatic haven t always proven popular. During the Dreamhack Winter semifinals of 2015, Fnatic revealed an outrageous boost against LDLC, stacking players on top of each other to gain an unprecedented sightline across the map. Having lost the first half 12-3, Olof s sniping dominated the bewildered French side into submission. Here's the video.
The boost proved so controversial that the match was put in for review to see if it violated any rules for the tournament. Sure to go down in CS history, the play resulted in countless analysis videos and the entertainingly terrible musical tributes. Extra controversy was raised after it was revealed Fnatic s coach had actively stifled knowledge of the spot through take down of YouTube videos. After heated discussion with tournament admins, Fnatic eventually forfeited their place, allowing LDLC to progress to the final. Valve acknowledged the exploit with the addition of a warning sign, reading gel nder bersteigen verboten! or surpassing the rails is forbidden! Combining memories of both bravery and infamy, it s little surprise Overpass is sometimes referred to as Olofpass.
CS:GO s map secrets have been known to acknowledge more than just competitive events. Tucked in the corner of Dust2 s A-bombsite is a rather unassuming goose spray which serves to honour Minh 'gooseman' Le, a co-developer of the original CS mod. The spray existed as far back as CS 1.6.
In recognition of one of CS:GO s more entertaining bugs, Train has a small sign asking players not to step on the birds, after the introduction of pigeons to the map allowed players to ride them out of the map boundaries.
In a game renowned for it s high skill ceiling and serious competition, It s nice enjoy a bit of levity through the surprising number of playful easter eggs. A personal favorite is the chicken followers, whereby If you press E on a chicken, it will follow you through the map until killed, even spawning with you in the following round.
Kentucky Route Zero Act 4 is nearly done, we proclaimed back in November of last year. The statement was made entirely in good faith, but nearly done proved to be a somewhat flexible term, as was the promise that it would be released soon, which I think we can all agree was last seen receding in our rear view mirror shortly after the new year. But better late than never, as they say.
Kentucky Route Zero, as developer Cardboard Computer describes it, is a magical realist adventure game about a secret highway in the caves beneath Kentucky, and the mysterious folks who travel it. It's a point-and-clicker, but unlike most other games in the genre it follows a meandering but fairly linear path on a journey filled with choices rather than goals: You poke around, you discover, you maybe see something unexpected, and you move on. Dialog is sparse, the visual style is striking, and the audio is something close to perfect.
The release of Act 4 is notable not only because KRZ is such a remarkable game, but because it's taken so long to get here. The first act was released in January 2013; act two game in May of that year, and act three in May 2014, more than two years ago. Cardboard Computer acknowledged the long wait last summer when it assured supporters that the game is not abandoned, canceled, a 'scam,' a performance art piece(?), or anything else but a work-in-progress. But it also warned that, despite the longer-than-expected wait, its process would not change.
Which is fine with me. Good things are worth waiting for, as people like to say, and Kentucky Route Zero is very good indeed. Find out more at kentuckyroutezero.com.
Building futuristic cities as atmospheric and intricate as those in Eidos Montreal s Deus Ex games is a huge undertaking, but it all starts with concept art. Here I ve collected some of my favourite pieces from Mankind Divided, which give you an idea of how these worlds are designed.
Mankind Divided s world is a lot more fractured and uncertain than it was in Human Revolution, which gives the game a darker, more dystopian feel. All this striking concept image is missing is some music by Vangelis.
This is one of Jensen s new experimental augmentations, the pulsed energy projection system, or PEPS for short. It s a non-lethal projectile that, when upgraded, can target several enemies at once.
Elias Chikane is Jensen s new pilot, replacing Human Revolution s Faridah Malik. He flies a similar VTOL aircraft, but their relationship isn t as cosy. Chikane is, like many others, suspicious of anyone with augmentations.
Prague s blend of historical architecture and modern, brutalist structures is one of the game s coolest visual ideas; almost as if the city itself is augmented. It s also the first Deus Ex city hub we get to explore during daylight hours.
Golem City is a ghetto for augs on the outskirts of Prague. It s inspired by the Kowloon Walled City, a densely populated settlement that existed in Hong Kong until its demolition in 1994. Here are some photos of the real thing.
Jensen hasn t changed much he still has his trademark pointy beard but his wardrobe has been refreshed. The high collar here is reminiscent of Deckard from Blade Runner s similarly stylish coat.
The makeshift streets of Golem City have been decorated with fluorescent lights, sculptures, and murals. An attempt by the residents, perhaps, to bring some life and personality to an otherwise grim, hopeless place.
Jensen arrives in Prague by train. Task Force 29, the Interpol-funded counter-terrorist group he now finds himself working for, are based in the city. Their HQ is underground, hidden beneath an ordinary-looking shop.
Jensen visits a commercial area in Golem City, where the streets are lined with market stalls. There s also a heavily guarded prison nearby, and an optional side mission involves helping someone to break out.
Prague is at the centre of an extreme anti-augmentation prejudice sweeping the world. This mistrust is mirrored in their aggressive, militaristic police force, who look more like they re waging war than keeping the peace.
Even though they re living in a depressing cyberpunk future, the artists in Mankind Divided s world have decorated the streets of their cities with beautiful, abstract sculptures like this. It s the prettiest dystopia.
In Mankind Divided we witness the aftermath of the so-called Aug Event, in which augmented people around the world were driven violently insane and millions were killed. This explains why many fear the rise of the technology.
The city hubs in Mankind Divided are much larger and a lot richer in detail than those we explored in Human Revolution. In fact, Detroit and Hengsha feel positively tiny when compared to Prague and Golem City.
When Jensen arrives in Prague the train station is attacked by terrorists. He survives, of course, and later finds himself investigating the crime scene. Which would be easy if it wasn t for the armed police guarding it.
A slightly redesigned version of Human Revolution s combat rifle. The attention to detail in the game is remarkable, from its many futuristic weapons and vehicles, down to simple props like coffee cups and office furniture.
This cluttered bookshop in Prague is owned by V clav Koller, an underground augmentation specialist who Jensen helps out of a tight spot. The entrance to his illegal workshop is hidden, naturally, behind a bookcase.
A heavy police presence means tensions are always high in Golem City. As you walk the streets you ll see augmented people pinned against walls being searched and hovering drones with spotlights scanning for trouble.
This is Viktor Marchenko, a member of the Augmented Rights Coalition. He s believed to be behind numerous terrorist attacks, despite ARC s founder, Talos Rucker, being opposed to violence.
The game s prologue mission is set in Dubai, in this abandoned, half-built luxury hotel. It serves as a tutorial, reacquainting you with Jensen s augmentations and giving you a taste of the slightly tweaked controls.

Although not officially announced as yet, work on the sequel to Obsidian s charming and wonderful crowdfunded role-player Pillars of Eternity was all but confirmed back in May, when the company s CEO Feargus Urquhart suggested it seems silly not to acknowledge the project s existence. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Urquhart now says the developer is starting to move forward on Pillars of Eternity 2, and that making a 3D action-RPG similar to Skyrim but within the Pillars universe is something he d love to do down the line.
We can keep doing great stuff with Eternity. I'd love to turn Eternity into more like a Skyrim product, he says when asked where he sees Obsidian now 13 years old in the future. I'd love to do a science fiction game. I just want to keep making role-playing games I do, and the team does. Whether that's independent or not, making RPGs we can be proud of is the goal. And that's what I can look back on. We've been very proud of a lot of what we've done as a team.
Urquhart speaks frankly about the economics of running an independent studio that operates on a larger scale than most. He speaks of the ethics and moral quandaries of returning to the crowdfunding well for a second time, what he s learned during his tenure at Obsidian, and the friction that can often occur when working alongside publishers, among other things.
Speaking to that last point, Urquhart explores the process of weighing up reward both from practical and financial perspectives and how the videogames industry differs from that of other businesses, and the challenges this in turn throws up:
We've thought a lot about what it takes to make a big game, and what's the reward we get for making a big game. For me to go off and do and we're not doing this, but let's just say Knights of the Old Republic 3, and it's going to cost $50 million, and I'll make $7.5 million on milestones and then maybe I'll make another $5 million in royalties. That's pretty good for an independent developer on a project. But, y'know, I can make more profit from two Pillars of Eternitys than I can from one of those games. And then on top of that, if it's a smaller game and it's successful, I'll own it. I'm not gonna own Star Wars.
Let's say you need some contracting work. The contractor shows up, you figure it out, and maybe it's going to be $10,000. They'll ask for $3,000 upfront, and you're like, 'Okay. I get it.' Let's say I do a $50 million game. For me to get more than $500,000 upfront is a fight. Again, this is not 'publishers are evil' or anything like that, but that world is kinda broken.
Check out the interview in its entirety over on Gamesindustry.biz.
League of Legends champion pool grows with every update, but there are a few who rarely get a chance to roam the Rift. It s only natural for players to gravitate towards one or two champions per role, of course, as mastering 131 characters is no easy feat. This doesn t mean that those who have been abandoned to the confines of the champion select screen are bad, however: many have merely slipped under the radar.
The Rift s resident gargoyle has always been shunned for his unquenchable thirst for mana. His greed for the blue stuff has ultimately left him high and dry. However, his mana issues have been softened to some extent via a buff in patch 6.8 which gave him reduced mana cost on Righteous Gust, as well as a re-scaled movement speed bonus, making the ability more potent early on. Galio also received indirect buffs in the form of added cooldown reduction to his favourite items Abyssal Scepter and Zhonya s Hourglass. These changes have had a positive effect on Galio, as his impact is largely dependent on him being able to cast his abilities to trade damage and win teamfights.
Even with these buffs Galio still lacks kill pressure in lane. A well-timed ultimate means nothing if your team lacks the burst or coordination to kill those caught in Idol of Durand s radius. However, the Sentinel s Sorrow certainly doesn t have too much to be sorrowful about as he boasts some of the strongest wave clear in the game with his Q + E, while his passive encourages him to build MR making him a good counter to almost every AP champion. His ultimate has the ability to win teamfights and is an absolute nightmare for immobile AP carries making him a good pick to deal with champs that lack blinks or dashes. Galio s ability Bulwark grants him bonus armour and bonus magic resist that allows him to tower dive with ease, while acting as an effective frontline damage dealer. In a team with good coordination Galio can be lethal.
Skarner jungle has a very low play percent of 2.39% and he seemed to fall off after the past Cinderhulk nerfs. However, the recent changes to Trinity Force have turned Skarner into a sleeper OP champion. The added attack speed and cooldown reduction from Trinity Force compliments his kit well and has only strengthened his ability to jungle. His Q has a 45% physical damage ratio plus a further 45% bonus magic damage ratio. This is an insane amount considering you can spam it due to Crystal Slash s low cooldown, making clearing the jungle a breeze. He has great utility thanks to Crystalline Exoskeleton which shields Skarner and grants him bonus movement speed, while Impale roots, suppresses and damages his opponent.
Do you like to play initiation champions that have crazy levels of crowd-control? Well Sion support might be just what you re looking for. This weird pick started gaining popularity in Korea when players realised that he synergises well in bot lane. Sion has one of the highest win rates as a support sitting comfortably at 52.14%, but support Sion isn t very popular as you might imagine.
He has a hard time against mobile champions like Lucian, Ezreal and Vayne who can simply dodge out the way of his CC, making him completely useless in lane. However, he s a very well-rounded champion that deals considerably more damage than other tank supports, and has a similar amount of crowd control and good engage. He s also a great counter to immobile AD carries like Ashe or Miss Fortune who are popular at the moment. Roar of the Slayer (E) slows enemy champions and deals a nice amount of damage early on, but it s late game where support Sion shines. The on-hit 20% armour reduction greatly boosts the damage his AD carry and team are able to do, while his engage with Unstoppable Onslaught can be used as primary or secondary engage. This allows him to chase down enemy carries, catch unsuspecting mid laners or initiate a teamfight.
Zilean is another champion who has indirectly benefited from the mage update of patch 6.9 and has gone largely unnoticed. The Chronokeeper has always had to sacrifice damage for cooldown reduction and mana regeneration items. However, by utilising Rod of Ages and Morellonomicon he is able still deal a lot of damage while also having access to mana regen and CDR making him very powerful. When you build 45% CDR you have access to Chronoshift every 30 seconds in the late game, allowing Zilean to revive himself or an allied champion if they take fatal damage. When maxed, Time Warp grants either a 99% slow or speed buff and makes landing a barrage of Time Bombs even easier. Zilian works extremely well against top tier champions like Zed, and can deny the farm he needs and safely counter his burst at level six. He s a great champ that prevents enemies from snowballing, making him very effective in solo queue.
Most people aren t aware of Urgot s existence, let alone what he actually does. This disgusting reanimated human has a 0.14% playrate and is the least played AD Carry. Urgot is plagued with early mana issues, short auto attack range, lacklustre sustain and a lack of escape that makes him easy prey if he overextends without vision. It s certainly not hard to see why he s so unpopular.
However, for all of Urgot s shortcomings he does have some redeeming qualities. Unlike many AD carries the Headsman s Pride can build tanky while still managing to put out a lot of damage. He has good poke with Acid Hunter, especially when combined with Noxian Corrosive Charge, making it hard for him to miss his enemy. This lethal combination of damage allows Urgot to constantly lay down harass and bully his opponent out of lane quickly. Urgot s W grants him with a shield while his R gives him the ability to switch places with his target, granting him huge amounts of damage reduction, which goes up to 50% at max rank.
That said, Urgot s unique kit requires a bit more thought and consideration if it s to be used to full effect. Once you find yourself comfortable with his playstyle, however, you ll be able to turn fights in your way every time.
Sejuani seemed to fall off the radar due to the Cinderhulk nerfs of patch 5.7 and subsequent nerfs to her W and R. These changes left her in a rather sorry place and it looked as though her winter s wrath had come to an end. Many players dropped her and moved onto junglers who weren t so heavily punished. However, Cinderhulk would once again make its return with some much needed changes in patch 6.9, and it looked as though winter would come to the Rift once again. While Sejuani is no way near as popular as she once was, she still has a lot to offer. Glacial Prison is one of the best engage ultimates in the game, if not the best. Its long-range AoE stun is amazing at catching targets out of position or locking down crucial opponents. It s such a great ability that it can easily win games on its own. She s very tanky too, has excellent AoE lockdown and does some nice damage with Permafrost. She also provides strong frontline protection for her team.
Cassiopeia is another sleeper champion people are only just starting to notice. She does very well against Swain, Vladimir and Ryze who are popular at the moment. She can outrange them and avoid their poke effectively, especially early on. She received a buff to Noxious Blast and Miasma which extended their cast range, while Twin Fangs had its cooldown reduced to 0.75. The latest changes allow her to get in and out of trades easier than before and give her a little bit more poke thanks to the lower cooldown. Death Fire Touch compliments her kit nicely with Twin Fangs applying it constantly. Cassiopeia greatly benefits from AP cooldown reduction items like Morellonomicon and Abyssal Scepter, while Archangel s Staff allows the noxious serpent to spam her spells. To make matters worse she can effectively slow and kite her opponents with the purchase of Rylai's Crystal Scepter making her impossible to escape from.
The Rift s resident rat has a very unorthodox playstyle compared to other AD carries, blending marksman and assassin together. This playstyle allows for some great plays and outplay potential while dealing huge amounts of burst damage. However, Twitch does get heavily countered by AD carries with either a lot of ranged poke or heavy all-in. Although Twitch can trade fairly well he does have a pretty weak laning phase and is very reliant on positioning, requiring him to play safe until he reaches mid game when he ll have access to core items like Youmuu s Ghostblade and Runaan s Hurricane. But it s his late game that really shows how monstrous a mere rat can be. He is even more potent in dynamic queue where players are easily caught alone. This is great news for Twitch as he can use Ambush to surprise an enemy laner and melt them with a lethal combination of auto attacks, Venom Cask and Contaminate.
Kayle has one of the most straightforward skillsets in the game. The Judicator lacks the flashy play styles of newer champions, but don t let that put you off. She currently has a 1.8% play rate in top lane and can be obnoxiously strong, especially against melee champions early on. Kayle is a very versatile champion that can single-handedly carry her team to victory or empower those around her. Even if she is behind Kayle can still be extremely useful. The Demacian angel can provide support with Divine Blessing, healing a target ally or use her ultimate, Intervention to save a friendly champion, deny a kill or give the protection they need to survive a teamfight. Kayle s strong early game and late game hypercarry are truly fearsome.
Wukong hasn't been monkeying around in the jungle for some time now. He has a relatively small play rate as many players opt for junglers with better clear and survivability, like Lee Sin and Kha'Zix. Changes to the Youmuu's Ghostblade and Black Cleaver builds helped a lot of spellcaster based AD champions, but unfortunately Wukong went largely unnoticed. If you can forgive his early jungle woes, and survive his rather poor clear, you will be rewarded at level six when he has access to his ultimate, Cyclone. His ultimate allows him to initiate teamfights knocking up those caught within it, and is a great way to surprise unsuspecting foes, especially when combined with Decoy. Watch your opponents burn their flashes as you creep up on them and give them a surprise. He may not be a favourite in the jungle, but boy is he fun. Simply jump into dynamic queue and let the jungle japes begin.
Matchmaking is a completely new experience for TF2. It combines the unfettered and wacky world of public play with some intense competition and small team sizes. From casual pubbers to competitive superstars, everybody will need to be aware of the differences and adapt to reach the top. Climbing the ranks from Fresh Meat to Death Merchant isn t easy, so here are some do s and don ts for both new players and experienced pros trying to excel in matchmaking.
The key to any good team is finding a composition that works. You need a balance of healing, damage, and mobility to win in matchmaking as in all 6v6. While the classic team composition in competitive TF2 has been one Medic, one Demoman, two Soldiers, and two Scouts, this has been turned on its head in matchmaking. Without any class limits or weapon bans, teams are free to run multiple Medics, while classes like Heavy can run amok with items like the Gloves of Running Urgently. The prevalent strategy at the moment in matchmaking is to run two Medics, two heavier classes such as Soldier, Demoman, or Heavy, and two Scouts. This gives your team a great balance, but teams can still succeed with a huge variety of compositions.
The most important thing to remember is that you need a Medic if nobody else is stepping up, take initiative.
If you re a diehard casual player dipping your toes into competitive TF2 for the first time, you ll need to learn the maps. Matchmaking omits maps suited for large teams (like Goldrush, 2fort, or Badwater) even though they are excellent in public play. Instead you ll find yourself on capture point maps such as the newly official Sunshine and Metalworks, along with Gullywash, Snakewater, Foundry, Granary, and more. Attack/Defend and Payload maps such as Gorge and Swiftwater are also featured, so it s important to have a good grasp on the maps before playing competitively.
Learning the names for areas as well as discovering all of the flanking routes is a necessity you should also use your new knowledge to flank your opponents and attack from alternate routes to gain an advantage in games.
For any newer players, this is the perfect time to learn some advanced techniques. TF2 is a game with a lofty skill ceiling and many techniques that the best players use aren t obvious when playing casually. Matchmaking has also drawn in a broad spectrum of players with varied experience; if you want to get to the top then you ll need to know how to rocket jump, airstrafe, dodge, and aim like a pro. This will help you move around faster than your opponents, avoiding their shots and continuing to deal damage. While the game itself doesn t have tutorials for these skills yet, there are a wealth of guides online over eight years of them! With practice these techniques can become simple and the advantage they give you is staggering, especially in matchmaking where mobility is so important.
Due to its small team sizes, matchmaking revolves around the use of Ubercharges. Don t lose track of them, as your positioning and decisions to attack or defend should be based on which team has uber. Medics are the most important class in the game for both their healing and their Ubercharge, which give a huge advantage to the team. They can allow you to push through choke points, attack sentry nests, pull off a clutch defense, or destroy the whole enemy team. Be aware though that the same can happen to you, so it s important to roughly keep track of the enemy Medic s percentage as well as your own. Every 40 seconds, a Medigun uber can be built keep that time in your head and have a healthy respect for the German doctor and his patients.
All of the weapons that we in the TF2 competitive scene decided to ban are legal in TF2 s new matchmaking mode. If you believe a weapon is unbalanced and needs a nerf, there s no better way to demonstrate that than to use and abuse it. Using incredible individual weapons such as the Crit-a-Cola can be devastating, but also keep the synergistic weapons in mind such as the Disciplinary Action. Some classes practically require unlocks to be effective: the Reserve Shooter and the GRU spring to mind. Utilizing the right combination of these powerful unlocks can increase your team s abilities even without altering the composition.
Don t stick to a single class in matchmaking. While you may have a main that you love and adore, matchmaking is the perfect opportunity to test out your skills on a variety of classes. Only a few classes are useful all the time in matchmaking, and one of the core concepts in the game is switching up your classes to keep a good team composition for the situation. This doesn t mean you should play a different class every life, but like Overwatch, be prepared to switch it up to fit your team. The team needs mobility and damage at a midfight, a tanky defense when on last, and a lot of balance in between. Picking a class that fits those roles is a great way to start thinking about how you can best help your team to win.
Josh Sideshow Wilkinson has more than 7,800 hours played in TF2. In the last six years, he's climbed to the top of the competitive scene, placing 2nd in Europe last season with his team Perilous Gaming. Sideshow is also a writer, caster for teamfortress.tv, analyst, and tournament organizer.
Back in March, Io Interactive held an unusual poll, asking Hitman fans if they'd rather kill Gary Busey or Gary Cole. Both are worthy choices, but in the end there can be only one and the bullet goes to Busey.
With all due respect to Cole, I don't think it was ever in doubt. Cole is wonderfully sleazy and famous throughout the internet for the "That Would Be Great" meme, but Busey is... well, he's Gary Busey. Cole makes funny faces at blind people, and bludgeoned a baby seal with another baby seal; Busey stole a baby from a candy store, and killed the dinosaurs. His villainy is transcendental, and clearly, he must be stopped.
Busey will join Hitman at 2:00 pm CEST/5:00 am PDT on July 21 as a special Elusive Target known as The Wildcard, and will be available for murderizing for seven days from that time. Remember, Elusive Targets are a one-shot deal: Blow the job, and you won't get a second chance. And as PC Gamer's own master assassin's so ably (or not) demonstrated a few months ago, getting it right is a tricky bit of business.
Here's another look at the two Garys making their pre-vote cases. More information on the Elusive Busey is at hitman.com.
