My trip to Frontier was a costly one. All through the day, David Braben kept teasing me about a special surprise he had for me, one that I was forbidden to mention (until today). Was it the Thargoids? Was he a Thargoid? I took note that his office was curiously round, like the cockpit of a ship, and I warily entered it. It wasn’t that: as I sat down, he asked me if I wanted to play Elite: Dangerous on the Oculus Rift? Did I? I did. I’m allowed to tell you this because the Elite alpha has just updated support for Track IR, 3D TVs, and the Oculus Rift, and my time with it has convinced me I need a Rift in my life. > (more…)
We’ve known for a while that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (because why have one meaningless subtitle when you can have two and> invent a new word) would eventually turn its helicopter-bifurcating blade on PC, but that’s all> we’ve known. Like a ninja or secret agent from any series other than Metal Gear, Konami’s been pin-drop silent on details. BUT NO MORE. Metal Gear Rising: The Redundancing now has a Steam listing, and it offers a just-close-enough-for-comfort January date.
Ever since reading about Ernst Udet’s brush with Georges Guynemer high above the Marne (the French ace waved then flew off after seeing his opponent struggling with hopelessly jammed MGs) I’ve attempted to behave chivalrously whenever possible while WWI flight simming. Wings Over Flanders Fields, the latest Combat Flight Simulator 3 metamorphoser from Great War scholars Old Brown Dog Software, has allowed me to take sportsmanship to undreamt-of levels. In WOFF not only do I frequently allow talented/spirited adversaries to escape, I often let them – if they’re so inclined – riddle my frail flying machine and frailer body with hot Pb.
It seems like only yesterday that I was writing about development of new maps for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Which is fair but slightly inaccurate, as it was actually Tuesday that I wrote about that. Now the maps are available to play as part of CS:GO’s Winter Offensive update, alongside the first batch of community-made weapon skins to be added into the game. (more…)
Fans of collectible card games have a lot of games to choose from lately, but this is an incentive for getting involved with Scrolls. The Magic: The Gathering inspired game by Minecraft-creators Mojang is offering a Christmas gift: if you own the game, you now have a free copy you can gift to a friend. (more…)
The reader of Rock, Paper, Shotgun clicked on the “Read the rest of this entry” button. No, the reader clicked on the button. The button, right below this text. It was clicked on, if anything useful was going to happen.
Nathan reported back in September on coming demise of Warhammer Online. Now it’s happened. Due to the end of EA’s licensing agreement with Games Workshop, as of Wedneday 18th Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has put the hammer down for good. (more…)
The Humble Puppy Bundle sounds… I really don’t know. Puppies are cute, so good. But a bundle of them, all at once? I can’t take on that much responsibility! Oh, and dogs are rubbish! Fortunately this is a Humble Weekly Bundle from Puppygames, consisting of the UK developer’s entire catalogue. And no actual baby animals. Which means you can pay what you want for Ultratron, Droid Assault, Titan Attacks and the very excellent Revenge Of The Titans, plus a bunch of soundtracks, and give a bundle of money to GamesAid. Oh, and the best video ever, featuring Ian Livingston!
Becoming blas about big money graphics boards is something of an occupational hazard for a tech hack. Actually, all-too-easy access to that kind of kit can make one complacent in all kinds of unpredictable ways. For instance, why, oh why, didn’t I mine bitcoins with all those high-end GPU samples when I had the chance? But I digress. The point I’m trying to make is that pulling the trigger on the latest and greatest graphics is hardly a given for most of us. But one of you won’t have to worry about that, because we’re giving away what could well prove to be the best all-round pixel pumper on the market. An AMD Radeon R9 290 with Sapphire’s custom Tri-X cooling. (more…)
