shootmania storm 2

We're now into the third week of the PC Gamer ShootMania Launch Cup and things are getting tense. Last week saw an almighty upset for early favourites Team Dignitas, leaving them one loss away from being disqualified. Meanwhile, Team Infused have surely become one of the strongest contenders following their showing against Lemondogs - making this week's Infused vs fnatic bout one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament. You can watch that match, and a livestream of the other top matches tonight right here from 7pm GMT. It should be a fun old time, as the teams battle to stay in contention for the grand finale next week - not to mention the £800 prize pot.

Be sure to check out the standings, to see how the fixtures have panned out so far, and which matches lie ahead.

As always, we'll have expert commentary courtesy of Ziggy “nVc” Orzeszek and David “Zaccubus” Treacy from Team Dignitas. Hit the jump to see the feed below.

Duke Nukem Forever
DNF2013

The problem with Duke Nukem Forever - other than that it was bad - was that it didn't provide the classic FPS experience that Duke Nukem 3D fans wanted, while also failing to be a decent modern shooter in its own right. That's why this is such a beautiful thing: with Duke Nukem Forever 2013, modders Gambini and Mikko Sandt have created the "game that was meant to be". Which apparently means a Duke Nukem 3D mod.

Duke Nukem Forever 2013 Trailer - Mod DB

Okay, it's not a complete old-school re-imagining of 2011's messy sequel, but then, it doesn't need to be. It transports some of the basic ideas and areas from Forever (and it's 2001 preview), and finds a much more suitable home for them inside the high-speed, twitch action of 1996.

To install, just download the mod from its ModDB page, unzip it, grab the DUKE3D.GRP file from the root directory of a Duke 3D installation, and copy it over to your DNF2013 folder. Run DNF.BAT and you're ready to kick ass and chew over the delicate nature of balancing a fleeting memory of gaming's past against the increasingly overwhelming demand of a modern audience.

Grand Theft Auto 5

GTA 5 trailer alert! Sound the hype-horn! Rockstar have plopped out more moving pictures of their upcoming open-city mug-'em-up so that we can look at them and say "put it on PC, please!" Rockstar are being coy about plans to bring the sequel to our hallowed platform, but we can take some solace in the knowledge that every GTA game has come to the PC eventually, apart from the first few, which were born on the PC. How far things have come from the 2D pixelly crimes of yore.

Leviathan Warships 2

Later today, Rockstar will post a trio of GTA 5 trailers, almost certainly destroying the internet under a three-pronged attack of fevered streaming. In which case, this launch trailer for Leviathan: Warships - a video that likely cost .000000004% of Rockstar's budget - could well be the last promotional game footage you ever see.

Which is something I'd be okay with, because it's a return of the Smooth Jazz and Ship Pun combo that made their last trailer such a delight. Although this time, they're really plumbing the depths of acceptable punning.

Honestly, I'm not sure whether to feel eye-rollingly weary, joyously amused, or just deeply aroused. That probably means it was a success.

Leviathan: Warships is due to land sometime today. Check out our recent hands-on preview for more.

Receiver 610x347

Guns, hey? Ridiculously simple to operate, I've always thought. Just hold down the left mouse button for a unstoppable spray of bullets, laser beams, plasma, or physics. So why Receiver feels the need to complicate things is a mystery. Supposedly Wolfire's shooter - originally created for the 7-day FPS Challenge, and now available through Steam - attempts to map each function of a handgun to make it closer resemble real life. Wait, WHAT?! You mean to tell me that guns aren't fictional? Even the BFG? Why would anybody build that?

Receiver lets you operate a Colt 1911 pistol, S&W Model 10 "Victory" revolver, and Glock 17, all with a basic approximation of their real functions. What isn't based in reality is any other part of the game: it's procedurally generated, filled with flying taser drones and set in a Matrix-like alternate reality in which the word "Mindkill" is a thing.

In celebration of the Steam release, Receiver is reduced by 20% to £3.19 until May 6th. Videos below:

Star Citizen

---TRANSMISSION FROM THE FUTURE---

The year is 2053; the world is on the brink of financial and social collapse. It started innocuously enough. Star Citizen - Chris Roberts' multiplayer space sim - took to Kickstarter, making a healthy $2,000,000 from backer pledges. But the money kept pouring in through the game's website at Roberts Space Industries. By the end of April 2013, Star Citizen had raised a staggering total of $9,062,402.

"Great," we collectively thought, "$9 million is enough money to make a really good space game." But it didn't stop. People kept throwing money at the chance to trade, smuggle, pirate, bounty hunt, and battle throughout a universe-sized sandbox of spaceships. The stock markets tanked, countries collapsed, the team at Cloud Imperium Games were cloned multiple times to keep up with their increasingly ludicrous development promises. On the plus side, we do have a really good space game.

---END TRANSMISSION---

Well that was weird. Anyway, Chris "Wing Commander" Roberts' Star Citizen has now raised over $9 million through crowdfunding.

To find out why that's good news, and almost definitely not the precursor to the eventual downfall of Earth civilisation, check out our recent interview with Roberts.

Thanks, Gamespot.

Anomaly 2

Somehow, even in a post-apocalyptic future where every day is a harsh battle for survival, the planet can still be full of blithering idiots. Exhibit A: This story trailer for "Tower Offence" sequel Anomaly 2. Watch as two guys foolishly approach the GIANT WARNING LIGHT OF IMPENDING DOOM, just on the vague promise of "high-grade military shit". Come on, guys, there's a siren and everything. How can you be this oblivious?

Oh look, a giant be-tentacled alien monster robot has shown up. Let's hope there's some lone dude with a mechanical Assault Hound randomly waiting to save your asses.

Huh, there was. That's lucky.

In case you missed it in all the excitement, the trailer also revealed the game's release date: 15th May. And currently, pre-orders taken through the Anomaly 2 website or Steam will receive two copies of the game for the price of one.

Half-Life 2
Minerva

Adam Foster, creator of the brilliant Episode One mod Minerva, works for Valve now. Clearly then, the temptation for this Director's Cut news is to lead with the implication that Valve are releasing a new Half-Life game on Steam. I'm not that mean - plus, it's early in the morning, and I'm worried the shock and subsequent disappointment would be too much for you all. Admittedly, then, it's not new, or even particularly official, but the Steam release of Minerva does promise to be the definitive version.

Foster explains that, while the Director's Cut won't contain additional content, it's still a significant overhaul, including "tweaked visuals, bug fixes, better puzzles and all kinds of subtle improvements. Nothing majorly new, just old stuff tidied and polished for this re-release."

If you're yet to play it, Minerva is one of those rare "Valve quality" mods, that in some areas surpasses the game its based on. Its cleverest trick is map design - Foster creates seemingly huge levels in surprisingly tight spaces, thanks to his talent at creating realistically proportioned, interestingly vertical game spaces.

Here's a short preview of what to expect, courtesy of ValveTime:

Minerva should release for free later today. You're now free to wildly speculate about this being the beginning of an Episode 3 ARG.

While Call of Duty: Ghosts has been rumored for months now (culminating in Tesco's mistakenly published item description), we still don't know much about the game. Activision is tipped to reveal the game on May 1, but until then we'll just have to gaze at this teaser website and wonder. Because, while the fact that you'll shoot and be shot at is a given, it's always the extraneous details that so titillate. For example, why 'ghosts'?

For a reason, that's for sure! The teaser site shows a ghost-like face which is itself made up of dozens of other faces submitted by users of the site. If you're really enthusiastic, you too can be part of the marketing push by linking your own Facebook or Twitter account. That's what they call engagement. Are you engaged?

According to that Tesco description, Ghosts will be powered by a "new next-generation engine". If other Call of Duty release windows are any indication, this will come out in October or November for every platform known to man.
