It’s a bumper week for the bargain bucket, with shedloads of great games available to buy for far less than you might expect to have to pay for them. I haven’t the foggiest idea why some weeks there’s tonnes of games for me to feature in this here column, whereas other weeks it’s slim pickings. Maybe it’s something to do with the phases of the moon, or could perhaps plate tectonics be responsible? Regardless, I don’t ask too many questions, I just enjoy the cheapness. For access to the best deals on games throughout the week, you’ll be wanting to visit SavyGamer.co.uk on a regular basis. Here’s this week’s selection: (more…)

Is it Halloween already?

Defending dungeons, I imagine, is quite difficult – especially when you’re chasing down other heroes, steamrolling over all their favorite toys, and not really defending many dungeons at all. That’s the basis of Dungeon Defenders 2′s competitive MOBA mode, and naturally, it strays a bit from the original’s adowwwwwable approach to gut-wrenching, mud-and-blood-spattered last stands. And yet, in spite of a hilariously suggestive name, Trendy isn’t blindly leaping aboard the MOBA bandwagon. Co-op’s back too, and goodness, it looks like what would’ve happened if the Death Star had turned out to be a pinata full of rainbows. So many things. Pluck the ribbon from the top of the break for a candy coated sensory overload nuclear meltdown of a most delightful sort.

It’s about five to seven on a Wednesday night and I meant to call my mum about an hour ago to tell her that I am a failure of a woman because I am twenty seven and sleeping on a beanbag in a loft, but instead what I did was look in the back of the fridge for dinner, which turns out to be a giant pot of Tesco’s Finest pea soup with ham in. I dump the pot of soup on a table and then have a slight heart in mouth moment – I can’t call my mum or eat soup I am interviewing Rhianna Pratchett and she is the Lara Croft of writing Tomb Raiders. ARROWEDIndie dev Matt Thorson‘s in FASHION. Ooooooooooooh. FASHION. He has accessorised his latest game Tower Fall in the latest chic: bows and arrows! And Ouya! Or wait, are boats more in fashion now? Is it boats that are cool? I guess boats might be cooler. I guess this is RETRO CHIC now, with the bow and arrow stuff. Maybe it can have a comeback, like the nineties. Click the ‘more’ button below to hear ‘more’ about this ‘game’. (more…)

Left 4 Dead 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Adam Smith)

Pretend that you didn’t read anything on the internet last week so that I can tell you about a keerrraazy new crossover that you won’t believe. Left 4 Dead 2 and Resident Evil 6. I know, right? When you’ve gathered the pieces of your mind, now blown into giblets, indulge me for a moment longer and act like you didn’t know that the survivors from Valve’s co-op sequel will be selectable in Capcom’s lurching horror. Mini-tanks and witches will also appear in the No Mercy game mode, which is part of the ‘Mercenaries’ minigame. Some Resident Evil monsters will also appear in Left 4 Dead 2. They’re called the Lepotitsa, Napad and Ogroman, and I can’t work out which has the silliest name. There’s a video below.

Arma 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Craig Pearson)

One. Is Looking. For Something. To. Do. Over! The scenario: you have the Arma 3 Alpha and you’ve exhausted the stock missions the game comes with. You’re also rubbish with the editor, and you don’t live with someone Arma Arm Armasson, who can show you what to do with it. Don’t worry. There’s no such person, so you’re not missing out on his sage wisdom. And Arma 3 is pretty easy to have fun with. Here’s what people have been up to (more…)

Deponia - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Nathan Grayson)

Decorated general Bitey R. Wolfington's tactics quickly became renowned for their predictable nature, but were no less effective as a result.

Hey, so, Deponia, right? It’s pretty OK. The first lushly drawn adventure was worth a few laughs (at least, between all the thinly veiled sexism and crudeness), and the second one, er, significantly less so. Still though, Daedalic is by no means untalented, so its new project, a dark fantasy turn-based strategy called Blackguards, definitely inspires curiosity. For better or worse, humor appears to be taking a backseat this time around, especially given that you’ll be stepping into the sullied shoes of a convicted murderer. It’s a premise that certainly could> wind its way down some fascinatingly gray trails, but there’s always the danger of venturing into grimdark-for-grimdark’s-sake territory.

ARPGs, as I’ve argued before, are the ultimate in comfort gaming. That half-involved click-click-clicking occupies all the parts of your brain that are otherwise used for worrying, while also offering you the opportunity to gobble up a podcast, or natter away on IM at the same time. So what about something free-to-play? I’ve never tried one before, generally having enough of the full blown, free-from-gouging versions to occupy my time as it is. But this week I kept seeing the name KingsRoad appear, and thought I’d give it a click. Can a browser-based F2P Diablo clone occupy my time in the same way?>

PAX East is happening right now and even though I’m not there to watch people announce things on stages, I’ve recently discovered a magical portal that allows me to read about reactions to things that are happening on the other side of the world. Currently, the tiny aperture is bursting with words and letters, things like ‘CCG’, ‘Free to play’, ‘first’, ‘Warcraft’, ‘Blizzard’ and ‘oh…really? Oh’. It would appear that the denizens of whatever land exists at the other side of the portal are discussing the announcement of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Blizzard’s first free to play game, which is a strategic collectible card game. Either that or they’ve all gone mad.
