Guild Wars
It's Time to Celebrate The Spooky Season In MMORPGs Halloween is still a week from today, so you'll have to wait until next Wednesday if you want to go trick-or-treating in the real world. (Or at least, if you want to do it without getting the cops called.)

But if you'd like to dash around a virtual world in costume, gathering treats and performing tricks, you're in luck. MMOs far and wide have Halloween events going on for a week or two. So if you're ready to dive into the spookier side of things, here are some places you can get your ghost and goblin fix.

It's Time to Celebrate The Spooky Season In MMORPGs Guild Wars 2
"Shadow of the Mad King"
October 22 - November 1

"Shadow of the Mad King" follows on the heels of the annual Halloween event from the original Guild Wars. The full set of events is unfolding over four acts over the next two weeks but right now, there are Halloween-themed goodies for sale on the Black Lion Trading Company, and decorations in Lion's Arch and elsewhere.

Mysterious (totally not spooky at all, nope) portals have also begun to appear around Tyria. Where do they lead? Well, finding the Mad King at the end certainly does seem likely. Our own Kirk Hamilton wrote his impressions of a hands on experience with Guild Wars 2's seasonal fare.

It's Time to Celebrate The Spooky Season In MMORPGs The Secret World
"The Cat God"
October 18 - November 1

The undead are kind of par for the course in The Secret World, really. A day with zombies, ghosts, and ghouls in its world isn't "Halloween," it's, "Tuesday."

The Secret World's third content update issue, then, takes players into something more than just a jaunt with run-of-the-mill eldritch horrors. It stars... the cat god. (Anyone who doesn't think a cat god can be scary has clearly never been awakened by the gleaming eyes of a fuzzy hellion at three in the morning.)

Events begin in Kingsmouth—where a previous Halloween, evil came over the sea—and end in a PvE version of Stonehenge. Where better to see what Samhain brings?

It's Time to Celebrate The Spooky Season In MMORPGsTera
"Masquerade Mayhem"
October 23 - November 5

Tera promises an array of tricks and treats to its denizens, starting today. Cake and candy are appearing all over the world—who can say no to sweets?

The dungeons, quests, and treat-gathering all, of course look delicious. But the highlight of Tera's Halloween festivities is no doubt going to be the Masquerade Ball and costume contest, on October 30. Players can enter in the categories of funniest, scariest, best single, and best group. (See the rules.)

If the Masquerade Ball is anything like the Halloween dances I vaguely remember from high school, a truly perplexing number of people will show up dressed as characters from Grease.

It's Time to Celebrate The Spooky Season In MMORPGs World of Warcraft
"Hallow's End"
October 18 - 31

World of Warcraft has Hallow's End down to a science at this point. The world is transformed: every hamlet, village, town, and city seems to be celebrating. Every jack-o-lantern tempts travellers with treats.

And of course, what's Halloween without a chance to play tricks on your rivals? The Horde and Alliance are at each other's throats again, this time with stink bombs and with bonfire sabotage. Of course, since the world is populated with the sort of charitable do-gooders that will stop and perform a quest for every farmer on the continent, there are ways to make an orphan's day. With candy. Because candy is awesome.

And naturally, because WoW is WoW, there are seasonal mounts to buy. Personally, I'm a fan of that broomstick.

ChefVille 'The Undead Chef' Quests: Everything You Need to KnowThe second portion of ChefVille's Halloween event has finally launched in our restaurants, as players are now encouraged to upgrade both the Halloween Cauldron and Haunted Broiler to unlock Intermediate Level dishes. This comes by way of two new quest series that are activated via a single quest that we'll look at below.

From there, you can jump straight into a series of four "Undead Chef" quests, which we're here to guide you through now. First things first, you'll need to complete the Extra Creepy Cauldron quest, which is now available to complete for the next eight days.

Cauldron Crusade
• Upgrade Your Halloween Cauldron to Intermediate
• Eat at Neighbors' Restaurants 6 Times
• Tend 12 Wild Pumpkins at Neighbors' Restaurants

This quest is a bit misleading, as the Wild Pumpkins task implies that you can simply tend 12 Wild Pumpkins at three different friends' restaurants, but it looks like you'll actually need to visit 12 different friends instead. This could be a glitch that's fixed later, but for now, be prepared for such a setup going in. As for the Halloween Cauldron upgrade, this is completed by collecting a large variety of building materials. You'll need four Cauldron Tricks, four Bubbling Banter, and four Spider Spells, all of which are earned through individual requests sent to neighbors.

ChefVille 'The Undead Chef' Quests: Everything You Need to KnowYou'll also need five each of Cauldron Treats and five Witches Warnings, with these two items coming by way of general news posts placed on your wall. When you complete this upgrade, you'll gain access to two more dishes: Cackling Kettle Corn and Beef & Pumpkin Chili, but of course, you won't need to cook any of those just yet. Completing this quest gives you five XP, 50 coins and two Corn. From here, you'll be able to access the "Undead Chef" quests, which immediately introduce another building project.

New Haunt
• Upgrade Haunted Broiler to Level 2
• Have 2 Spooky Halloween Ribbons in Pumpkin Waffles
• Give 7 Chef's Services with Creepy Crepes

Thankfully, both of these dishes are prepared within the original Haunted Broiler, so you can work on the upgrade in the "background" while these dishes are cooking. Just remember that you can't access the menu to ask for parts while a dish is actually cooking, so ask for everything you need to before making the Broiler "busy" again. A single Pumpkin Waffles requires two Pumpkin Puree, one Dough and one Salt to prepare (along with three minutes), while Creepy Crepes take two minutes and require three Pumpkins, one Flour and two Milk. Since you won't get very many servings for a single preparation of Creepy Crepes, you'll want to make sure you're actively playing the game when you serve it to finish this task so that you (hopefully) don't have to cook it all over again just to reach seven.

ChefVille 'The Undead Chef' Quests: Everything You Need to Know As for the Haunted Broiler, this upgrade requires five Werewolf Whispers and five Angelic Anecdotes, both of which are earned by asking your friends to send them to you specifically. You'll also need six Terrifying Tips, which are earned via a general news post placed on your wall. This quest guide will continue to expand in the future, as we learn more about what makes these quests tick.

What is it with Nintendo and Penelope Cruz, by the way? Do they have some sort of Penelope Cruz commercial quota to hit this year? Genuinely curious.

Two Creators Frustrated With The Legend of Zelda Are Bringing You a Great-Looking Graphic Novel Some people felt like Skyward Sword soared. Others felt like the latest entry in Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series was saddled with annoying issues. Even current steward Eiji Aonuma feels like changes may need to happen to the long-running franchise. While the impact of these mixed feelings on the next Zelda game is a long ways off, some good may come out of the response to Skyward Sword in the form of a very promising graphic novel.

Second Quest is a comics project that has a writer and artist trying to recapture the sense of discovery they felt when playing older Zelda titles. And it's not just any writer or artist wither. The art's being handled by David Hellman, the creator responsible for the beautiful painted backgrounds in Braid and he's collaborating with Tevis Thompson, whose critical essay on Skyward Sword echoed the thoughts of other die-hard fans. Here's how they describe the graphic novel:

Two Creators Frustrated With The Legend of Zelda Are Bringing You a Great-Looking Graphic Novel

Second Quest is a comic for those who love videogames but want more compelling worlds and a sense of real discovery. Zelda fans will enjoy familiar motifs turned upside-down, but you don't have to know Zelda to enjoy our story. It's for anyone who's felt the pull of distant landscapes and longed to explore a world full of mystery.

Second Quest takes place in a world that has already been saved. Chaos was banished long ago, and the people were united. It is now the Age of Harmony.

A young woman discovers that she can draw out memories from objects just by touching them. But what these objects show her does not fit the legends she's always been told. What will she discover about her island home? And what place does a curious, daring young woman have in a world that has already been saved?

Second Quest also engages many conversations that are happening in the videogame community right now – about the representations of women in games, the failures of triple-A titles, the role of achievements and trophies, and why we even play games at all. We hope our comic will offer a unique take on these issues.

The art shown so far look great and there's clearly passion for Zelda and video games in the team's hearts. Take a look at the Kickstarter project pages and see if you're swayed into opening your wallet. Who knows, it might be like opening one of Link's treasure chests.

"Hurry up and wait." It's a common phrase used in the U.S. Military, one that encapsulates the often frustrating tedium of life in the armed forces.

"Hurry up and wait" may apply to real life, but it probably shouldn't be true in a video game. Or at least… not to this extent. But this kind of thing keeps on happening in Medal of Honor: Warfighter, even after the hilariously massive day-one patch. The video above was taken from the PC version of the game after the patch had been installed. I'm hoping that it's a bug and not a droll commentary about life in the military.

Much like its obvious influence Call of Duty, the single-player part of Medal of Honor: Warfighter relies heavily on scripted events. Unfortunately, the scripting is… often a bit off, as you can see here. In the game, my team and I had just cleared out a courtyard of dudes. We headed into this alley and then… well, waited. And waited. It's like they just gave up, stopped caring! Sometimes an objective marker would appear on my screen. Sometimes it wouldn't. I had no idea what I was supposed to do next.

I wish I'd left the tape rolling for another eight seconds, at which point my squad leader, out of nowhere, said, "Let's go through the window!" before opening it so that the game could continue. Yeesh.

I'll have a full review of Medal of Honor: Warfighter up on Kotaku tomorrow.

Zuckerberg Isn't Pleased With the State of Facebook Gaming, But It's Getting BetterWith Facebook's major gaming revenue source faltering and social gaming in general struggling to find new ways to engage and earn without annoying, it's no wonder Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg isn't happy with the state of gaming on his massive social network.

During yesterday's earnings call as reported by TechCrunch, Zuckerberg came right out and said it: "Gaming on Facebook isn't doing as well as I'd like." The main reason behind the statement was the troubled Zynga. Last year the company was responsible for 62 percent of Facebook's payments revenue — 12 percent of Facebook's overall revenue. This year the numbers have dropped to 40 percent and 7 percent respectively. That's a rather massive drop.

As Zynga struggles, other social game developers are stepping up their game, with companies like Kixeye, King.com and Wooga moving in to make up for Zynga's losses.

He went on, "But the reality is that there are actually two different stories playing out here. On the one hand, our payments revenue [from Zynga] decreased by 20% this quarter compared to last year. But the interesting thing is that the rest of the games ecosystem has actually been growing. Our monthly payments revenue from the rest of the ecosystem increased 40% over the past year, since payments has been adopted. This evolution is pretty encouraging."

It's another sign that social gaming as a whole is evolving beyond the template Zynga established. Hopefully the FarmVille company can keep up. If not, there's plenty of competition ready to take its place.

How People Earn The Actual Medal of HonorEA's first-person shooter series Medal of Honor has been around so long that it's easy for a gamer to think of the words "Medal of Honor" as just a video game brand, no more tied to a real thing in the non-gaming word as a phrase like "brothers in arms", "company of heroes" or "call of duty".

The phrase "medal of honor" doesn't just refer to the long-running video game series that was cooked up by Steven Spielberg and updated with a sequel this week. It doesn't just refer to some random medal someone might get for doing something honorable.

No, the Medal of Honor—technically the Congressional Medal of Honor—is the highest award given by the U.S government to members of the military, alive or dead. It is given to people who went far beyond what might be expected of any soldier, sailor, airman or Marine. Their actions are described in the official record on the website for Congressional Medal of Honor Society (a group that states a hope that it will someday receive no more inductees). Every description is stirring. The men (yes, all men) who were given the Medal of Honor did things that are in some ways less over-the-top than what we do as virtual soldiers in video games but are far more extraordinary.

The Medal has been given to 3,549 American fighting men, according to Society. More than 1500 of them were given to people who fought in the Civil War and more are still given, to this day, for fighters in any conflict in which the American military was engaged.

Here is a sampling of what Americans have done to earn the Medal of Honor, as described in the official record:

The First Recipient: Jacob Parrott. Awarded Medal On March 25, 1863

Rank and organization: Private, Company K, 33d Ohio Infantry. Place and date: Georgia, April 1862. Entered service at: Hardin County, Ohio. Birth: 17 July 1843, Fairfield County, Ohio. Date of issue: 25 March 1863. Citation: One of the 19 of 22 men (including 2 civilians) who, by direction of Gen. Mitchell (or Buell) penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and tracks between Chattanooga and Atlanta. [Official entry]

The Most Recent Recipient: Leslie Sabo, Hr.. Awarded Medal on May 16, 2012

Specialist Four Leslie H. Sabo Jr. distinguished himself by conspicuous acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty at the cost of his own life while serving as a rifleman in Company B, 3d Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division in Se San, Cambodia, on May 10, 1970. On that day, Specialist Four Sabo and his platoon were conducting a reconnaissance patrol when they were ambushed from all sides by a large enemy force. Without hesitation, Specialist Four Sabo charged an enemy position, killing several enemy soldiers. Immediately thereafter, he assaulted an enemy flanking force, successfully drawing their fire away from friendly soldiers and ultimately forcing the enemy to retreat. In order to re-supply ammunition, he sprinted across an open field to a wounded comrade. As he began to reload, an enemy grenade landed nearby. Specialist Four Sabo picked it up, threw it, and shielded his comrade with his own body, thus absorbing the brunt of the blast and saving his comrade's life. Seriously wounded by the blast, Specialist Four Sabo nonetheless retained the initiative and then single-handedly charged an enemy bunker that had inflicted severe damage on the platoon, receiving several serious wounds from automatic weapons fire in the process. Now mortally injured, he crawled towards the enemy emplacement and, when in position, threw a grenade into the bunker. The resulting explosion silenced the enemy fire, but also ended Specialist Four Sabo's life. His indomitable courage and complete disregard for his own safety saved the lives of many of his platoon members. Specialist Four Sabo's extraordinary heroism and selflessness, above and beyond the call of duty, at the cost of his life, are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Company B, 3d Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army. How People Earn The Actual Medal of Honor

A World War II Recipient: Van Barfoot

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 23 May 1944, near Carano, Italy. With his platoon heavily engaged during an assault against forces well entrenched on commanding ground, 2d Lt. Barfoot (then Tech. Sgt.) moved off alone upon the enemy left flank. He crawled to the proximity of 1 machinegun nest and made a direct hit on it with a hand grenade, killing 2 and wounding 3 Germans. He continued along the German defense line to another machinegun emplacement, and with his tommygun killed 2 and captured 3 soldiers. Members of another enemy machinegun crew then abandoned their position and gave themselves up to Sgt. Barfoot. Leaving the prisoners for his support squad to pick up, he proceeded to mop up positions in the immediate area, capturing more prisoners and bringing his total count to 17. Later that day, after he had reorganized his men and consolidated the newly captured ground, the enemy launched a fierce armored counterattack directly at his platoon positions. Securing a bazooka, Sgt. Barfoot took up an exposed position directly in front of 3 advancing Mark VI tanks. From a distance of 75 yards his first shot destroyed the track of the leading tank, effectively disabling it, while the other 2 changed direction toward the flank. As the crew of the disabled tank dismounted, Sgt. Barfoot killed 3 of them with his tommygun. He continued onward into enemy terrain and destroyed a recently abandoned German fieldpiece with a demolition charge placed in the breech. While returning to his platoon position, Sgt. Barfoot, though greatly fatigued by his Herculean efforts, assisted 2 of his seriously wounded men 1,700 yards to a position of safety. Sgt. Barfoot's extraordinary heroism, demonstration of magnificent valor, and aggressive determination in the face of pointblank fire are a perpetual inspiration to his fellow soldiers. A War in Iraq Recipient: Paul Smith

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy near Baghdad International Airport, Baghdad, Iraq on 4 April 2003. On that day, Sergeant First Class Smith was engaged in the construction of a prisoner of war holding area when his Task Force was violently attacked by a company-sized enemy force. Realizing the vulnerability of over 100 fellow soldiers, Sergeant First Class Smith quickly organized a hasty defense consisting of two platoons of soldiers, one Bradley Fighting Vehicle and three armored personnel carriers. As the fight developed, Sergeant First Class Smith braved hostile enemy fire to personally engage the enemy with hand grenades and anti-tank weapons, and organized the evacuation of three wounded soldiers from an armored personnel carrier struck by a rocket propelled grenade and a 60mm mortar round. Fearing the enemy would overrun their defenses, Sergeant First Class Smith moved under withering enemy fire to man a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on a damaged armored personnel carrier. In total disregard for his own life, he maintained his exposed position in order to engage the attacking enemy force. During this action, he was mortally wounded. His courageous actions helped defeat the enemy attack, and resulted in as many as 50 enemy soldiers killed, while allowing the safe withdrawal of numerous wounded soldiers. Sergeant First Class Smith's extraordinary heroism and uncommon valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Third Infantry Division Rock of the Marne, and the United States Army. An Afghanistan War Recipient: Salvator Giunta

Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, on October 25, 2007. While conducting a patrol as team leader with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment, Specialist Giunta and his team were navigating through harsh terrain when they were ambushed by a well-armed and well-coordinated insurgent force. While under heavy enemy fire, Specialist Giunta immediately sprinted towards cover and engaged the enemy. Seeing that his squad leader had fallen and believing that he had been injured, Specialist Giunta exposed himself to withering enemy fire and raced towards his squad leader, helped him to cover, and administered medical aid. While administering first aid, enemy fire struck Specialist Giunta's body armor and his secondary weapon. Without regard to the ongoing fire, Specialist Giunta engaged the enemy before prepping and throwing grenades, using the explosions for cover in order to conceal his position. Attempting to reach additional wounded fellow soldiers who were separated from the squad, Specialist Giunta and his team encountered a barrage of enemy fire that forced them to the ground. The team continued forward and upon reaching the wounded soldiers, Specialist Giunta realized that another soldier was still separated from the element. Specialist Giunta then advanced forward on his own initiative. As he crested the top of a hill, he observed two insurgents carrying away an American soldier. He immediately engaged the enemy, killing one and wounding the other. Upon reaching the wounded soldier, he began to provide medical aid, as his squad caught up and provided security. Specialist Giunta's unwavering courage, selflessness, and decisive leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon's ability to defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American soldier from the enemy. Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta's extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment, and the United States Army. A Former Candidate for Vice President of the United States: James Stockdale

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while senior naval officer in the Prisoner of War camps of North Vietnam. Recognized by his captors as the leader in the Prisoners' of War resistance to interrogation and in their refusal to participate in propaganda exploitation, Rear Adm. Stockdale was singled out for interrogation and attendant torture after he was detected in a covert communications attempt. Sensing the start of another purge, and aware that his earlier efforts at self-disfiguration to dissuade his captors from exploiting him for propaganda purposes had resulted in cruel and agonizing punishment, Rear Adm. Stockdale resolved to make himself a symbol of resistance regardless of personal sacrifice. He deliberately inflicted a near-mortal wound to his person in order to convince his captors of his willingness to give up his life rather than capitulate. He was subsequently discovered and revived by the North Vietnamese who, convinced of his indomitable spirit, abated in their employment of excessive harassment and torture toward all of the Prisoners of War. By his heroic action, at great peril to himself, he earned the everlasting gratitude of his fellow prisoners and of his country. Rear Adm. Stockdale's valiant leadership and extraordinary courage in a hostile environment sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. [Official listing]

This Grand Theft Auto V Artwork Promises "Pest Control" in the San Andreas Sunshine The art style that Rockstar Games uses to promote its Grand Theft Auto games has been almost as important as the gameplay in the open-world series. Over the years, the publisher has doled out hints as to the sex, drugs and hi-jinx players would get into via posters and other graphic design images, long before any glimpses of gameplay were offered.

This time, it's a wee bit different as the art above clearly references a moment from the GTA V trailer, specifically one of the few instances where weapons of any kind show up. In the Rockstar Instagram feed where this piece showed up, the accompanying comment said, "Lots of info coming next month. Get ready." until, then look at the pretty (important) picture.

Strange New Resident Evil 6 Patch Will Unlock Ada Wong Right Away In a very unusual move, Capcom is releasing a free Resident Evil 6 patch in mid-December that will unlock the Ada Wong campaign—previously available when you beat all the other campaigns—for players right away.

The new patch for the maligned horror-survival game will also offer new camera and subtitle options. Here's Capcom:

Capcom is pleased to announce that, in response to player feedback, a free title update for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Resident Evil 6 will be made available in mid-December 2012. This update includes the following additions and improvements:

  • Gamers will be able to adjust the camera to give a greater field of view as best suits their play style. Screenshots illustrating the new camera and co-op features can be found on Capcom's press site. The camera screenshot pairs show the minimum and maximum range of the new camera setting. Please note that this feature is still in development and may change without further notice before the title update is released.
  • Subtitle options have been improved so that English language audio can be combined with subtitles in an alternative language.
  • As recently announced, Ada Wong's campaign will be unlocked from the start and have an optional player-controlled co-op partner added. It was previously necessary to complete all three other campaigns in order to unlock Ada's story.
  • ‘No Hope' difficulty level will be added above the existing levels, for players who want an extreme challenge.

Capcom values user feedback on Resident Evil 6 and ResidentEvil.net and is working continuously to improve the experience for players.
