You Can Print Your Own Mask of Borderlands 2's Handsome Jack, Just In Time For Halloween

Halloween is coming up surprisingly fast. If you find yourself seeking a gaming-themed costume, have you considered perhaps being Handsome Jack?

Reader Jeffrey Broome directed us to this papercraft mask he made, featuring the villain of Borderlands 2. Not only is the mask fairly impressive-looking on its own, but he's also shared the pattern and instructions for printing and assembling your own.

It's a complex piece of papercraft that he warns won't be easy for beginners to assemble. But for the right party? Totally worth it.

Battle Bears Take the Fight to TV AnimationWith five bear-based shooters for Android and iOS devices under their fuzzy little belts and another on the way, SkyVu Entertainment teams up with the makers of Yo Gabba Gabba! to transform Battle Bears into the next big TV animation franchise for boys.

Created by SkyVu co-founder Ben Vu while he was an animation student at CalArts, Battle Bears was pretty much destined to become an animated series. It's got a group of six combat-ready teddies with distinct personalities, hordes of adorably mindless enemies to destroy—it's a kid's toy marketeers' dream, and W!ldbrain is jumping on it.

"Battle Bears has enjoyed worldwide success as a mobile game," said W!ldbrain Entertainment president Michael Polis via official announcement. "Between its built-in fan base and the expandable universe that lends itself to consumer products and character-driven extensions such as series, Battle Bears has the potential to become the next big boys action comedy brand."

While Angry Birds has spawned a series of animated shorts, this deal makes Battle Bears the first mobile gaming property to score a full television season of 30-minute animated episodes. That's rather huge, really.

No word on when the show, toys, party hats, Happy Meal Toys and other branded fluff will be showing up, but knowing that it's all on the way makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

The Walking Dead

Warning: major spoilers for Episode 3 follow.

Telltale released a new stats trailer, showing off the popularity of certain player choices in The Walking Dead's Episode three.

I have to say: Wow, guys. I'm impressed!

I would've thought for sure at least a higher percentage of The Walking Dead players would by now have succumbed to the pressure of survival. I guess there's something too comfy about our couches and computer chairs, though.

Personally, I just can't stand the thought of letting Clementine down. She's trusted me this far, and I can see the respect and love in her eyes when she looks at me. And no way am I about to make this journey any harsher than it already is for her.

Mists Of Pandaria Is Full Of Video Game And Pop Culture References

World of Warcraft has always been notorious for having tons of video game and pop culture references and Mists of Pandaria tries really hard to set a new record. Here's what we dug up so far. Let us know in the comments if you've found others.

Mild spoilers below!

Defeat Sif From Dark Souls

The quest mob Cracklefang in the Kun-Lai Summit zone is an obvious reference to the boss Sif from Dark Souls. He is much easier to defeat as you can see in Samdecahedron's video.

Battle For Toad Eggs

There's a quest called Bottletoads in the Valley of the Four Winds referring to—guess what—the NES classic Battletoads. The quest ends with the "Now when the kids ask "Do you have Bottletoads?" I can say YES" quotation. Some might remember why it's worth mentioning. Here's a video showing the whole quest.

The Arrow Finds Its Way One More Time

During the escort of an NPC called Koro Mistwalker—as part of the quest Unsafe Passage in Krasarang Wilds—he takes an arrow in the knee. Here's the video of it from user Arthuras.

Do The Barrel Roll! Do It!

Seems like Peppy's annoying order from Star Fox got its own quest in Kun-Lai Summit. The quest seems to be fun though, as the video shows.

Harvest Pandaria

The whole "Tillers" faction in the Valley of the Four Winds is a shout-out to the Harvest Moon series (there's even a Blue Feather item). They're slightly different from the ordinary factions in WoW; you have to harvest crops and manage your farm in Halfhill in order to increase your reputation with them. Samdecahedron's video shows the intro quest line for the faction.

Don't Let Foreman Mann Scream

The quest I Have No Jade And I Must Scream in The Jade Forest is a reference to Harlan Ellison's horror/sci-fi short.

Doh! The Goggles!

Using the quest item Nectarbreeze Cider on the Gormali Incinerators during the quest Spitfire in The Jade Forest will make them say "My eyes! The goggles do nothing!" which is from a memorable Simpsons episode.

The Darkmoon Rabbit And The Holy Loot

There are already many Monty Python related stuff in WoW, but it seems Blizzard can't stop adding them. The Darkmoon Rabbit is the latest, referring to the Rabbit of Caerbannog from Monty Python's Holy Grail. It's a level 90 raid boss, so it's not an easy kill. You can watch an attempt in Kingxcommander's video.

Find The Ex-Drummer Of Nirvana In Kun-Lai Summit

There is an NPC called Grohl Grohl in Kun-Lai Summit who also appears to be a drummer, just like Dave Grohl. Youtube user Zadster shows where to find him.

Magical Anime Pools

The Singing Pools in the Pandaren starting zone is a sweet reference to the Cursed Pools Of Jusenkyo in the classic anime, Ranma 1/2. Lordthawkeye shows it in his video to the left.

Find A Lonesome Flying Tortoise

Lon'li Guju might be the memento of the once world famous Pinta Island tortoise Lonesome George. He spawns in the northern part of Kun-Lai Summit. Youtube user Syiler gives you a hint where to find it.

This Might Be The Weirdest Looking Duke Impostor Ever

Mists Of Pandaria Is Full Of Video Game And Pop Culture ReferencesDuke Nukem is also in the game under the alias Dook Ookem.

Prepare For Explosions

First You Gotta Do The Truffle Shuffle

Mists Of Pandaria Is Full Of Video Game And Pop Culture References The Truffle Shuffle quest in the Valley of the Four Winds is a nice reference to poor Chunk's dance attempt in The Goonies. This daily quest can be obtained from Jian Ironpaw, shown on Wowhead's image to the left.

Why So Obvious?

Mists Of Pandaria Is Full Of Video Game And Pop Culture References There is a quest called Why So Serious? in Krasarang Wilds. This one doesn't really need an explanation. The quest giver is a nice looking fella called Ken-Ken, as you can see on Wowhead's pic.

Defeat A Slightly Different Conan

Mists Of Pandaria Is Full Of Video Game And Pop Culture References The NPC called Cornan The Barley Barbarian in the Valley of the Four Winds could be the gardener version of Conan. Image courtesy of Wowhead.

Fight Jungle Book's Shere Khan

Mists Of Pandaria Is Full Of Video Game And Pop Culture References Kher Shan might be a reference to Shere Khan in Jungle Book. This creature spawns in The Jade Forest. Wowhead to be thanked yet again.

Blizzard Loves British Rock

Mists Of Pandaria Is Full Of Video Game And Pop Culture References Red Blossom Leeks, You Make The Croc-In World Go Down, a quest in the Valley of the Four Winds rhymes with the lyrics of Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls. Wowpedia brings you the image.

30 years ago Sega's isometric space shooter Zaxxon took arcades by storm, confusing early gamers with its at-the-time freaky isometric perspective. Players were tasked with destroying the evil robot Zaxxon deep within its asteroid base. How did we get out? That's where Zaxxon Escape for iOS and Android comes in.

Developed by Free Range Games, Zaxxon Escape is an exciting new take on the endless runner, one of the most popular genres in mobile gaming. Instead of running we're flying a ship, and instead of ducking and jumping we're rotating our devices to fit through gaps and avoid obstacles. Tapping the screen fires at enemies and obstacles, swiping the screen at junction points flies us down branching paths. All the while the galaxies most persistent explosion is nipping at your heels.

I've only played the game for about ten minutes, but it's been an incredibly entertaining ten minutes. As tenuous as Zaxxon Escape's connection to the original arcade game may be, it's good enough so far that I don't mind it borrowing the name for a bit.

11-Foot Metroid Cosplay is a Towering Work of ArtKotaku reader Dan Cattell recently built himself some Metroid cosplay. Well, some more Metroid cosplay. We've featured him previously with his Samus piece, but I figured this 11-foot Ridley deserved its own time in the spotlight.

If you want to see how it was made, Dan and his friend Krystal (who helped build it) made a time-lapse video detailing the construction process, which you can check out here.

Kotaku already provided advice on the differences so perhaps you could make your choice. But if that wasn't enough, why not judge the games on which one can render things like Wayne Rooney's head better?

The Official PlayStation Magazine UK had the two games face off by seeing which ones did better jobs at reproducing the likes of Lionel Messi, Gareth Bale, Franck Ribery, Rio Ferdinand, Gervinho, Marouane Fellaini, and Marouane Fellaini's hair.

Many more comparisons over at OPM. Check the link below.

Accel World: Awakening of the Silver Wings Is Interesting, But FlawedAccel World is a popular anime series based on a series of popular light novels centering around a secret MMORPG fighting game that gives you startling powers in the real world. While this seems like the perfect setting for a fighting game tie-in, its first game is instead an odd cross between a dating sim and a turn-based RPG. And while the crossing of the two genres is an interesting concept, the actual execution has more than a few flaws.

Good — Retelling of the Story

Chronologically, Awakening of the Silver Wings starts right after the fifth episode of the anime series. However, instead of following the exact story as told in the anime, the game allows itself some leeway with the order of events—not to mention adding a ton of events specific to the game only. The dating sim portions of the game expand the plot's more personal elements—even giving the player the option to see how the story unfolds should Haruyuki pursue a girl other than Snow Black. Basically, the main draw in this game is seeing the different ways the Accel World story can be told and experiencing the unique surprises therein.

Good — The Voice Cast Returns

Like many anime, Accel World's total running time clocks in at just over nine hours. Over that amount of time you tend to get more than a little used to the character's voices. So when I Accel World: Awakening of the Silver Wings Is Interesting, But Flawedbegan playing the game, I was thrilled to see not only that the entire cast had returned, but also that their performances were on par with the anime.

The only weird thing is that in the real world, Haruyuki, the player character, is unvoiced—as is the norm for most dating sims and visual novels. However, in the virtual world, he is fully voiced. It makes for an odd disconnect, though it doesn't really affect the game negatively.

Good — Someone Who Made This Game Has a Clever Sense of Humor

The moment you turn on the game, one of the characters at random gives his or her own version of the game's anti-piracy statement, complete with side comments and character-specific flourishes. Then when installing the game, Haruyuki and Snow Black discuss that, in old games, you used to have to install the game—with Snow Black finding the whole idea stupid, to say the least. This is followed by the Red King and her maid discussing all the things they can possibly do during the game's install —before hopping on the maid's motorcycle for a quick visit to Haruyuki's. I think this is the first time I can ever say I enjoyed the act of installing a game. And best of all, this type of humor continues throughout the game itself.

Mixed — An interesting Battle System, but a Slow One

The battle system in Awakening of the Silver Wings is unique to say the least. I have covered it in more detail before, but basically it is based around retooling your stats before each turn while Accel World: Awakening of the Silver Wings Is Interesting, But Flawedyour opponent does the same. As you dive into the VR world over and over, you start to learn each enemy's base stats and how you need to alter yours to beat them. Before long your level 2 Silver Crow will have no trouble with Snow Black's level 9 Black Lotus—which, in terms of the plot, is kind of ridiculous.

The biggest problem with this system is how slow it is. A battle could take anywhere from three minutes to ten minutes, depending on the type of enemy you're facing and how good you are at guessing his or her stats.

Bad — Fighting Every Day Gets Real Old, Real Fast

If you want to play the game in the best possible way, you have to battle once a day. And as the game takes place over a period of several months, you can imagine how monotonous the battles are when all you want to do is further the plot. But even worse, there aren't very many different enemies to fight—especially near the beginning. Even when you do start facing more varied enemies, they tend to fall into one of two categories—high defense or high evade—and either type is easy enough to deal with. In short, the constant battling felt more like filler than fun.

Accel World: Awakening of the Silver Wings Is Interesting, But Flawed

Bad — A Few Loading Issues

The game's other issue is a technical one. Despite installing the game to my PS3's hard drive, I was constantly plagued by loading times. Transitioning from the dating sim menu to the turn-based battles took a good 20 seconds. But this wasn't the only time I had loading issues.

Even during the game's talking scenes the game struggles. Whenever a new character enters the conversation, there is a good five second pause as the character's model loads—completely breaking the natural flow of the conversation and pulling you out of the game.

Final Thoughts

Accel World: Awakening of the Silver Wings is not a bad game for the dating sim genre. While not as complex as most, it is well voiced and looks great. The turn-based battles are a mixed blessing as the system is unique and interesting, but at the same time, doesn't allow for enough variety to keep the battles themselves interesting. All in all, this is a game that should be played only by fans of the series or dating sim aficionados; everyone else should probably stand clear.

Accel World: Awakening of the Silver Wings was released in Japan on September 13, 2012, for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. There are no plans for an international release.

This Gamer Girlfriend Advice Sure Seems PatronizingHey world, guess what! There are female gamers. There are also females who are not interested in games. And there are dudes who don't like games, either. SHOCKING, I KNOW.

Yet, there's this: Japanese website Sugoren did a story on nine ways you can get your "beginner gamer girlfriend" to have fun while playing few games. Because the only beginners out there are girls? Here are those ways:

1. Be nice while teaching her how to play.
2. Occasionally lose to her on purpose while playing a versus game.
3. Prepare snacks, drinks, etc.
4. If possible, buy games you can play with her.
5. Every so often, check to make sure she's not getting tired.
6. Laugh off mistakes and don't get angry.
7. Avoid franchises she hasn't played before or doesn't know.
8. If you are having fun and she isn't, stop playing immediately.
9. Clear the difficult parts for her.

*sigh*

Online in Japan, the reaction to this piece on various forums has been largely derisive, with many commenters ironically pointing out that they first need a girlfriend or wondering how they can get one. "Video games are something you play alone," wrote one commenter on popular site Hachima Kikou. "End of story."

The article was written based on a survey female readers of Otome Sugoren took, so there might be shades of truth. But some of these bits of advice are really, really patronizing—to both male readers and their girlfriends. And even if the readers of Otome Sugoren are females, why not spin this out to advice on how to get all non-gamers comfortable?

When I think of the female (or male) friends I have—gamer and non-gamer—the vast majority are relatively comfortable with video games. They grew up when Nintendo was exploding in popularity, so the notion of video games aren't entirely foreign. Male or female, they might not play current consoles, and honestly, I'm really not convinced it would be wise to try to coax them into doing so.

But this article isn't about friends, it's about girlfriends, you say. Yes, that's correct. It is. And I know that people want to share their interests with the people they care about. However, if your girlfriend (or boyfriend!) isn't into video games, then she (or he) isn't into games. There's nothing wrong with that and no need to let him or her lose so they'll feign interest in your hobby. More important than getting your loved one to play games with you is hoping they understand and respect your interests. The same should go for how you feel about theirs.
