I loved Borderlands, the way you love memories of a summer or a semester when you first read a favorite book. Yet writing up impressions of a game like Borderlands 2 is quite difficult, actually. Where do you begin? "Hey, remember that game from October 2009 that inhaled 80 hours of your time? Well, get ready for a whole lot more of that." Because Borderlands 2, structurally, was instantly, drop-in-like-it's-2010-again familiar for me.
It's not to say there is no difference, or that this constitutes one huge DLC extension with four more classes. The first Borderlands couldn't draw on any user telemetry to refine its experience—which highlights how remarkable it is that the game became such an obsession. Borderlands 2 has the benefit of tuning itself with that data. "In fact, the servers are taking telemetry from the game we're playing right now," Jeramy Cooke, the game's art director, told me as we romped around Hyperion City, trashing the local dictator's monuments to himself.
A full featured minimap is perhaps the best example of that. Borderlands, remember, had only the compass with the cardinal directions across the bottom of your HUD, with a single diamond for your next objective. The mini-map doesn't obstruct your view, and it properly calls out objectives, enemies and allies, though I could see why maybe it was left out of the original. With a mini-map, I do tend to spend a lot of time glancing at that instead of a game's surroundings, however stylish.
There are still a lot of whoa-shit surprises in this game, most often in the firepower and loot you acquire. The four new classes all have new Action Skills, but I only got to test one in great detail: the Assassin's. Cooke, playing as the Siren, showed me that class' speciality, the phase-lock. The Assassin (name: Zer0) deploys a decoy of himself and then cloaks for a short burst of time. Your foes' critical areas are then highlighted, showing what to aim for to score a critical hit. Landing hits early in the cycle, I was told, won't deal as much damage but they will extend its time; waiting until the end and scoring a hit right as time runs delivers a mega-critical, whose damage practically assures a one-hit kill.
The Siren's phase lock draws somewhat on Lilith, the Siren from the original Borderlands, and fleshes out the canon of this peculiar character class. Evidently there are only six Sirens in existence at one time, and Maya, the Siren of Borderlands 2 is one. Her Phaselock accesses the same dimension that Lilith used to perform her Phase Walk, and freezes an enemy in a bubble. This is particularly useful—especially in solo play—when you or your team needs to pick off the weaker members of an enemy cohort before going after the real big problem leading it.
Maya has other skills that are especially useful, including one that, when Phaselock is deployed, drags a cluster of additional foes toward the bubble, presenting a nice fat target for those on your team who deal beaucoup splash damage (think: grenades). Mostly, the classes' trees evolve as they did in the original Borderlands, with some recognizable analogues to the original skill sets. However, Cooke said, re-spec costs have been reduced because of the designers' expectation that characters will have to reformat their skill loadouts to deal with different bosses and climactic battles as the campaign wears on.
Re-speccing should also help address one agonizing drawback of Borderlands that I encountered with my first character. I stupidly acquired weapons with high accuracy and damage factors but little (or zero) elemental effects, which were utterly necessary to defeat the Crimson Lance in the General Knoxx DLC on second-playthrough difficulty. Here, Maya's skill tree offers powers that deliver elemental effects, for example, allowing you to re-spec for a showdown with enemies particularly vulnerable to one of them (corrosion for armored foes, for instance) without having to hunt up a weapon to do that job.
I was disappointed to learn, however, that some of the hilariously grim death animations had to be toned down. I'll never forget the first shock kill I got, on a Brute in the second mission at the Dahl Headlands. Watching his eyes pop out and his head fry down to a barren skull, through my sniper scope, defined the holy-shit thrill that the original Borderlands provided. Unfortunately, overseas censors aren't too keen on seeing them this time around, so the electrocutions and immolations won't be as graphic.
The game still looks fantastic, runs fast, and plays just as addictively as its predecessor. Cooke and I had to be interrupted twice by a 2K Games representative whose job it was to shuttle me off to see another game.
I took a week's vacation when the original Borderlands released, riding my bicycle eight miles to a store to pick it up. In hindsight it was my personal game of the year for 2009. The only titles to get more time out of me this console generation have all been sports. Simply booting up Borderlands nearly three years later takes me back to some very fond memories. I'm old enough to know that you just don't get the same feeling the second time around, but Borderlands 2 looks like it will try its damndest to give it to me anyway.
While he offers no citation, the same Reddit tipster who absolutely nailed every detail of the Mass Effect: Rebellion Pack nearly three weeks before Sony's Hong Kong website outed it, is back at it again with information on Mass Effect 3: Earth, the upcoming multiplayer extension and, more broadly, the "Extended Cut" DLC.
Quoting derptemp6698:
The fighting is fiercest when it's your home at stake! Mass Effect 3™: Earth adds mods, gear, and new maps for Rio, Vancouver, and London. It features 3 new weapons: Piranha assault shotgun, Acolyte pistol, and Typhoon light machine gun. Six new human N7 classes are also available: Destroyer, Paladin, Demolisher, Slayer, Shadow, and Fury!
derptemp6698 also mentioned the "Extended Cut" DLC, the one that provides the clamored-for alternate ending to Mass Effect 3 (called "expanded" here), but it doesn't shed much more light than what was already known.
An expanded ending for Mass Effect 3. Additional scenes and an extended epilogue reveal the impact of Shepard's choices on the future of the galaxy.
He had no information on a release date for either pack, and noted that they are separate extensions.
I've reached out to an Electronic Arts representative for Mass Effect to get a confirm, deny or no comment. Any uttered will be updated here.
Update: An EA representative said the company doesn't comment on rumor or speculation.
Multiplayer DLC leak, round 2! (Going to believe me this time?) [Reddit, h/t OldManOnTheHill]
Good old Error 8071053D is back if you try to sign into PlayStation Network from your PlayStation 3. If you try to log in to a PlayStation web site, you get a page tells you the site is down for maintenance. These outages affect North American servers.
Update: A Sony representative tells Kotaku that the maintenance is now over and PSN account holders may log in again.
It doesn't appear to be regularly scheduled, as PSN underwent regular maintenance on May 24, and the weekend after E3 would be kind of a bad time for that. I'm reaching out to Sony Computer Entertainment America representatives for more info on why this is happening and how long it's expected.
Though its singleplayer functionality will, of course, remain, the six-year run of Phantasy Star Universe will come to an end Sept. 7 when Sega shuts off online support for the game for the Xbox 360. Sega announced the shutdown yesterday.
"This was not an easy decision but there comes a time when we must consider the level of service and support we can provide for an ongoing game" Sega said in a statement, "and balance those concerns against preparing for the future, and providing you with new opportunities and new experiences."
Phantasy Star Universe previously had online support for its PC and PlayStation 2 versions cut in March 2010, and lost original Xbox support when Xbox Live was shut down for that console entirely 15 days later. That left the game as a rare, Xbox 360-only console MMO. Phantasy Star Online 2 an action role-playing game, is scheduled for a release this summer, but only in Japan.
"It has been a long run for our intrepid GUARDIANS: Across the Gurhal system for six years now, exploring new worlds and new challenges," the statement said. "While we are saddened to close the doors to PSU on Xbox 360, we are proud of the game and of our loyal fans who have supported us through the years.
"More than anything we want to thank all of you once again, from the bottom of our hearts, for supporting this game, for providing feedback, and for enjoying and sharing in this experience with us.
"We look forward to taking our memories and the lessons learned from this game as we prepare to move into the future. There is more news yet to come for Phantasy Star, and there will be much to be excited about in the coming weeks and months."

Before E3, Microsoft registered every possible permutation of "XboxSmartGlass" and "MicrosoftSmartGlass," tipping off Monday's reveal of the technology that will connect the Xbox 360 to Android and iOS devices. Well, they got every possible combination except one: "XboxSmartGlass.com."
That's owned by one Tang Haiyue of Guanghzhou, China, who bagged the domain on June 1, right around the time Engadget broke news Microsoft would debut SmartGlass in L.A., and the other domains were discovered by registration watcher Fusible.
XboxSmartGlass.com at present contains some generic posts as it is "a nonprofit blog to introduce the smart glass industry knowledge." And that's nice, really. But as Microsoft filed trademarks on "SmartGlass" back in January, there's a solid chance the National Arbitration Forum will pry this domain loose and hand it over to Microsoft.
For now, if you really want to visit Microsoft's official site on this topic, try xboxsmartglass.org

OK, well, not just "some dude." The record-seeker is Ed Heemskerk, who set the marathon record for Q*Bert at 68.5 hours back in March, and now is bidding for a 100-hour stretch on a single quarter. He started yesterday morning at 8 a.m. EDT, meaning that, by now, he's a little more than a quarter of the way toward his goal.
Heemskerk's last bid set a time record but failed to eclipse the overall high score mark which, at 28 years old, has moved out of the house, gotten a good paying job and is getting serious about a Ladybug high score it met at a wedding. Rob Gerhardt's mark of 33,273,520 has, since last year, survived five attempts to beat it.
One hundred hours is not fooling around. The most I have ever done without sleep was probably 41 covering a Marine Corps training exercise. The only time I went 100 hours straight without doing something was when I won a fraternity bet going that long without taking a dump. That was before I became a coffee drinker, obviously.
If Heemskerk hits 100 hours, that'll be at noon EDT on Tuesday. If he beats his old mark, that'll happen sometime around 5:30 a.m. EDT on Monday. You can check on Heemskerk's progress at the link below.

Okay, they're... they're showing Halo 4. The demos keep showing sequels...Uh, I think they're...they're talking about a browser or something. I-I don't know, I wasn't listening... Nothing's happening. Nothing's happening. Usher's dancing. Nothing's happening. It's over. A lot of people in the audience look pissed.
amazingmao also wins for making somewhat of an unfair comparison. Snooki?! Come on.
Just imagine your favourate thing, essentially destroyed, nullified, without the possibility of continuation, replaced with something new that you absolutely can't stand.
Imagine the American Flag design, replaced by a picture of Snooki, forever.

E3 2012 wasn't just a banner year for bows and helicopters, it was also quite the year for throat-trauma. From Splinter Cell to Resident Evil to Far Cry 3, game after game featured resplendent, flinch-inducing throat violence.
Chris pulled together some gifs for you, in case you're you're into this sort of thing, or in case you want to get a sense of just how violent E3 2012 got.
Brace for impact:
Connor wings out a redcoat's throat with a single swipe of his tomahawk.

Nothing says "tropical island resort" like a machete to the neck.
Throat-Trauma Rating: 4
Hey, this looks like the same guy as before! What does Jason Brody have against dudes in red turbans and sunglasses? Sheesh.
Throat-Trauma Rating: 3
This is the only one that doesn't involve stabbing. But my word, that looks trachea-crushingly intense!
Throat-Trauma Rating: 5
Whoo boy, the high-frequency blade is a nasty piece of work. Also a nasty piece of work? This sequence from the game. Yeesh. Bonus points for psychological damage.
Throat-Trauma Rating: 10
Yeah, it's a zombie, so it's "not quite as troubling" as the others. Still though… dagger into the skull. Dang.
Throat-Trauma Rating: 5
My goodness. Sam Fisher takes down an enemy in most brutal fashion. Ag.
Throat-Trauma Rating: 9
Lara Croft isn't content to let the guys have all the fun, so she also stabs a dude hard in the neck. I heard that this game was where she had to kill someone for the first time. Considering that, she's pretty awesome at it!
Throat-Trauma Rating: 7
Let's end on another zombie one, and a nifty one at that; this comes from ZombiU's debut trailer, which doesn't show gameplay but does show some wicked zombie-action.
