Ace Attorney Is the Best Video Game Movie Ever (Take That, Hollywood!)Gyakuten Saiban—the movie based on Capcom's visual novel series, Ace Attorney—was released in Japan to sold-out theaters this past weekend.

Staying closer to the source material than any video game movie before it, does this film prove that games can successfully be adapted into movies or does it reiterate the idea that games and movies are fundamentally incompatible forms of art? (Hint: it's the former.)

Gyakuten Saiban, the movie, closely follows the plot of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney—specifically the overarching story of the first, second, and fourth cases in that game. Upon finding his mentor, Mia Fey, murdered, rookie defense attorney Phoenix Wright finds himself trapped in the middle of 15-year-old mystery. With the help of Mia's little sister, Maya, Phoenix sets out to match wits against prosecutors Miles Edgeworth and Manfred Von Karma to unravel the conspiracy that connects them all together.

A movie like this could find no better director than Miike Takashi (Ichi the Killer, Audition). Known in the West mostly as a horror director, he's actually done everything from children's fantasy films to classic anime adaptations in addition to his horror work. His ability to merge the real and the surreal does more than hold the often-comical/often-serious drama of Gyakuten Saiban together: it crafts a world where such things feel natural.

If you've ever complained that a video game movie strays too far from the source material, then Gyakuten Saiban is the movie for you. Everything from hair styles to the Blue Badger come straight from the game with little to no embellishment. Much of the game's music returns—now fully orchestrated—and even the set design perfectly mirrors the in-game locations.

That said, the movie and game are not identical as Miike doesn't hesitate to take the ideas present in the game and run with them to their logical conclusion. In a world where all trials last for a maximum of three days, Miike treats courtrooms as the world's most popular sport, where fans buy tickets and lawyers face off in pre-fight interviews.

Moreover, witnesses are developed into true characters with their own complete stories and motivations far beyond source material. This extra insight provides the key to some of the film's most emotional-and haunting-images.

But by far the best thing in the movie is Miike's insistence to show, not tell. Deconstructed to its core, the Ace Attorney series is about a group of people standing around talking in a courtroom. But in Miike's Gyakuten Saiban, being visual is key. When a witness is testifying, we see the events happen via flashback. When a spirit medium contacts spirits of the dead, we don't just see a woman writhing around; we see the ghostly figments of death and the hellish landscape beyond.

This is the very reason for one of the film's most obvious additions, the holographic evidence windows. Ostensibly made to emulate the game's court record, they do far more by creating a way to make even the most mundane piece of evidence exciting and engaging. They also serve to set the time period, with comically large CRT monitors being used in flashbacks.

Ace Attorney Is the Best Video Game Movie Ever (Take That, Hollywood!)If the movie has any weakness, it's the casting. While most of the cast, especially Phoenix, Edgeworth, and Von Karma, are spot on, the same cannot be said for the supporting characters. Maya, a 17-year-old who is far more child than adult in the games, comes off less like an innocent girl and more like an emotionally unstable woman in her 20's. Gumshoe, on the other hand, comes off looking like an intelligent, clean-cut rookie cop rather than a middle-aged screw-up.

But as a whole, Gyakuten Saiban is by far the best video game adaption I have ever seen—though given how low that bar is, I'll do you one better. Gyakuten Saiban is on its own a fun, engaging mystery/comedy and a legitimately good movie.

I'll end this review with a little story. I had the pleasure of seeing this film with a non-gamer who had never even heard of the Ace Attorney games. He came out of the theater raving about the swerving plot twists, great characters, and amazing direction. He then proceeded to download Gyakuten Saiban 123 HD—the new iOS HD versions of the first three games—onto his iPhone. I don't know if there's any bigger praise than that.

Man Gets Hello Kitty Haircut To Amuse His FatherWhen your loved ones are down, you'll do anything to cheer them up and make them laugh. For 50 year-old Hu Han-yan, getting his father's spirits up meant one thing: a Hello Kitty haircut.

According to Taiwan's TTV News, the man's 84 year-old father was feeling ill before the spring festival. Hu, a successful businessman with 14 kids, wanted to bring a smile to his dad's face. He picked Hello Kitty because his kids like character—and because it's youthful.

"A 50 year-old man making his father cracking up like that, it's great," said the father.

The haircut cost TWD$1,000 or US$34 and took 2 hours. Strangers giving thumbs-up on the street? Priceless.

Hello Kitty is popular throughout Asia. A fleet of Hello Kitty planes recently launched in Taiwan.

Move Over Romance, It's Time for the KillersThe Romance of the Three Kingdoms was a Chinese historical fiction novel written in the 14th century, and it wasn't about romance at all—well not romance as in love. It is a story about the struggles of three kingdoms and their battle for power and dominance over China. The story is full of treachery and brotherhood and even some romance.

The Three Kingdoms story has been made into many comic books, television shows, films, and games, most famously Koei's Dynasty Warriors and of course John Woo's 2008, 4-and-a-half hour film epic Red Cliff . It is an integral part of Chinese culture. You would be hard pressed to find a Chinese person who didn't know the story of the Three Kingdoms.

Back in late 2008, four students took the whole Three Kingdoms motif and basically melded it with the American board game Bang; the end result was Three Kingdom Killers. The basic premise of Three Kingdom Killers is exactly the same as Bang: each player randomly selects a player; one player is the lord while the other players could be allies or enemies. Everyone's role except the Lord is hidden at first.

The playable characters are Lord, General, Insurgent, and Spy. The mission of the Lord is to destroy all Insurgents and Spies. The Minister's job is to protect the Lord while killing the Insurgents and Spies. The Insurgent's mission is to only kill the Lord, while the Spy's mission is to kill everyone and then the Lord. On top of the character cards there are basic cards such as attack cards, dodge cards, and health cards aptly named "Peach Cards". Each card bears the name of a famous character If you are a fan of Dynasty Warriors you will definitely know the characters in Three Kingdom Killers by name. A typical game of Three Kingdoms Killers has 2-10 players and lasts anywhere from 20-60 minutes.

Perhaps the biggest draw of the Three Kingdoms Killers, is that it's a social game in the truest sense of the word. It's common to see large groups of Chinese people playing the card game in cafe, or just two or three students in a restaurant with their laptops out cursing at the screen because their Lord had been slain in the PC version.

Three Kingdom Killers' popularity has been such that a simplified online version was created to give players who don't have the finances to purchase cards an opportunity to play the game.

Due to the similarities of how Three Kingdom Killers is played, there has been a lawsuit by the creators of Bang against the Beijing Yoka Games company, the company that publishes Three Kingdom Killers. There have been no recent developments on the case.

Apple Asks the Fair Labor Association to Check Out Its Chinese Labor SuppliersAfter enduring weeks of criticism over the working conditions at the Chinese factories that make its products, Apple has asked the Fair Labor Association to look into the matter. The FLA will audit the plants where 90% of Apple products are assembled, including the embattled Foxconn factories in Shenzhen and Chengdu.

After assessing the conditions, the FLA will provide Apple with recommendations. Here's how the audits will go down, according to Apple:

As part of its independent assessment, the FLA will interview thousands of employees about working and living conditions including health and safety, compensation, working hours and communication with management. The FLA's team will inspect manufacturing areas, dormitories and other facilities, and will conduct an extensive review of documents related to procedures at all stages of employment.

Apple notes that it has conducted more than 500 audits of its own facilities since 2006, including 40 audits at Foxconn plants. [Apple]

The Girls Are Fake. The Sausage Party Is Real.Today is Valentine's Day in Japan. The day is slightly different from its American counterpart—2012, more so. Early this morning, gamers lined up so they could spend the day with someone special: their virtual girlfriends.

Love Plus is a dating simulator. New Love Plus, released today for the 3DS, is the latest in the series.

What separates Love Plus isn't just the amount of data developer Konami packed into it, but the fanfare the games have; Konami caters explicitly to its hardcore players. The Tokyo-based game company once even launched a campaign in which fans could go on vacation with their virtual Love Plus girlfriends.

For New Love Plus, Konami is launching a paid email service for the game. Players can get regular emails from their virtual girlfriends for a mere ¥315 (US$4) a month.

Valentine's Day in Japan differs because girls are supposed to give guys chocolate. A month later, there's White Day. On March 14, men give chocolate or presents to the ladies who gave them gifts or sweets on Valentine's Day.

Hoping to capitalize on a new holiday, Marshmallow companies apparently created the holiday decades ago. The marshmallow tradition didn't last, but the name "White Day" stuck.

If it seems like Valentine's puts women in the uncomfortable position of making the first move (it really does), the day can be rough for dateless guys, too. Like anywhere, young men do judge their popularity by how many Valentines they get. Since Valentine's Day and White Day are separated, it's not something one can get over in a single swoop and be done with. Everything is dragged out.

And many women, especially in the workplace, feel compelled to give "giri choco" ("obligatory chocolate") to male coworkers. This isn't true at every company, but it is widespread.

The Japanese tradition seems to avoid any chocolate giving awkwardness on the men's part. That fear of rejection does not exist for men on Valentine's Day. Instead, there's the fear of not getting any chocolate—whether that be obligatory or from the heart.

Which is why Konami's decision to launch New Love Plus on Valentine's Day was especially brilliant. The game isn't only going on sale today, but offering free content at 7-11, meaning that players—and they're mostly males—can get actually get digital Valentine's Day chocolate from one of the Love Plus girls. Hopefully, these players will be able to return the favor next month on White Day.

Warning: things are about to get a little personal.

This is my favourite song of all time.

No, really. It's my favourite song on my favourite album from my favourite band, ever.

It's Kyuss at their best. Epic. Cruisey. Yet also bringing a rolling thunder. If Scott Reeder (bass) and Josh Homme (guitar) died tomorrow, this is how I'd want to remember them.

Soundtrack isn't news. It isn't video games. It's just Kotaku editors sharing music they dig. Enjoy!
