2011 is coming to an end. Best of lists and worst of lists, it's time to look back at the year that was.
Not all of 2011 was something you could enjoy with polite company—and especially not at work.
As Kotaku did in 2009 and 2010, here's a look back at 2011 NSFW-style. These aren't all of Kotaku's NSFW posts for the past year, but they are the highlights.

In the above video, little Riley goes off on the way toys are marketed to kids: blue and superheroes for boys, while girls get pink and princesses.
While she's specifically talking about toys (she is in a toy store), I agree with so much of what she says. And so much of what she says holds true for how video games and video game hardware is sold to each sex. Game companies pander pink game hardware and pink games.
Back in 2006, I got a pink DS Lite. I wrote about it here in this post with a tongue-in-cheek title. In Japan, pink isn't always a feminine color. Cherry blossoms, which are pink, are macho—hence why Japanese gangsters get them tattooed on their bodies.
Riley's right, because sometimes boys want pink things. Sometimes girls want blue things. There's nothing wrong with that.

Among the games loaded up on the Playstation Vita Sony lent us last week there was one game I had very little interest checking out. Once I did, I couldn't stop tinkering.
ModNation Racers: Road Trip is the portable, very malleable take on ModNation Racers. On its surface it is a kart racer that has you turbo charging your way around a mix of tracks, using weapons and hopping your way to sharp turns and close finishes. But dig a little deeper into the game and you'll discover the ability to create your own cars, your own racers and your own tracks.
What makes this particular take on the game is that you'll be doing all of those things with your fingertips. That means fiddling with placement, sizing, and tiny points of your design is much easier than it would be if you were using a controller.
The end result are races that's just as fun to design as they are to compete in.
Back in late 2009, Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama wrote on his blog: "The world of Final Fantasy XIII is starting from here on out." It hinted that FFXIII DLC was on the horizon. It wasn't.
And Toriyama apparently apologized later for the lack of FFXIII downloadable content.
Now that the game's sequel, Final Fantasy XIII-2, is out in Japan, Toriyama is once again hyping up DLC, saying that players can "look forward to successive downloadable content".
Toriyama didn't discuss further what that DLC entailed other than it would be "varied".
Final Fantasy XIII-2 had a much quicker development cycle than FFXIII, and it seems like Square Enix has its act together with the title. No doubt DLC is in the game's future.

Welcome back to the Kotaku Game Club. Today we're wrapping up our discussion series on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and 2011. Since we've all (hopefully) completed the game, let's talk about the game's final dungeons and the ending.
Since we'll be discussing the entire game today, including the ending. Players who haven't finished the game yet and want to stay spoiler free should come back when they're done.
Stumbled onto the page for the first time? Let me give you a rundown: The Kotaku Game Club plays one video game every month, and meets weekly to discuss their thoughts on the game as a group, looking at it piece by piece as we play. In the past I've tried to emphasize the idea that you'll get more out of Game Club by keeping pace with our discussions.
Since it's our last week with this game, and the year, I don't think you guys need a jump-off. Talk about the ending. Give your final thoughts. Based on the past three weeks, I can tell that some of you have been holding back for today's discussion.
That's it! This is our final meeting for Skyward Sword! As usual, we'll discuss the options for what game to play next month, and let you guys know ASAP. I had a blast talking games with you this past year and I'm looking forward to playing even more with you guys in 2012!
Happy New Year!
In Konami's love sim New Love Plus, you can once again talk with virtual girls. Since the 3DS features a gyro-sensor, you can also move the handheld around and see things. Hello fan service?
Japanese news site Rocket News tested online claims that you can use the motion tech to see things you shouldn't in the New Love Plus, only to discover that no matter which position you moved the 3DS, the game's fan service was kept to a bare minimum.
If you get New Love Plus when it's released next Feb., using the gyro-sensor on, say, the subway probably is a bad idea.

The full trailer for the Dragon Age anime we spoke about earlier this month has been making the rounds. it's 106 seconds easily as enjoyable as any 106 seconds I spent trudging through BioWare's sloppy sequel.
It's all about the Gackt for me. Once the subject of Ashcraft-teasing jokes on my part, the girlish Japanese pop icon has grown on me over the years, his stellar performance in the movie Bunraku cementing his place in my heart. Gackt lends his voice to a Knight-Commander in the anime, and contributes the theme song "Until the Last Day."
He's so dreamy.

It's no secret that today's soldiers train on all manner of video game-style simulators. In the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense, British servicemen use Virtual Battlepace 2 as part of their regimen. VBS2 is a product of Bohemia Interactive, who also made the first Operation Flashpoint game and now produce the ultra-realistic ArmA shooter sims for the consumer market. (The U.S. Secret Service use VBS2, too.) However, unlike the OpFlash games, VBS2 hasn't gotten an update since 2007. In the dog years of video game engine iteration, that's a loooong time. With recruits already having experienced the better graphics and gameplay of Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, British military are finding that VBS2's hoary old experience no longer holds new trainees' attention. Bored soldiers-in-training probably aren't what you want to be sending all over the world.
So, the Ministry of Defense now wants to use the tech of more modern war games to augment their current simulators. An article at Gamasutra quotes a Andrew Poulter—technical team leader at the Ministry of Defense's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory—as saying the following in a Guardian interview:
"Back in the 1980s and 1990s, defense was far out in front in terms of quality of simulation," said Poulter. "Military-built simulators were state of the art."
"But now, for £50 ($77), you can buy a commercial game that will be far more realistic than the sorts of tools we were using. The truth is, the total spending on games development across the industry will be greater than spending on defence."
With regards to acquiring or licensing the engines of modern-day titles, Poulter says that such tech would have to be tuned more towards portraying realism, as opposed to the bigger-than-life entertainment experiences they currently portray:
"The weapons need to be credible. If they fire a rifle and the bullet travels three and a half miles, then that is not right. If they are steering a vehicle, then that has to be right too. Realism is more important than entertainment."
So, if you think that BF3 or MW3 is too boring already, it's probably a good thing that you won't experience a more realistic version during military training.

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater is coming to the Nintendo 3DS as Snake Eater 3D. To mark the occasion, the game is getting a very special Nintendo 3DS. Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima provided a first sneak peek.
According to Kojima, this is the first snakeskin embossed Nintendo 3DS. Of course, it's not covered with actual snake, but rather, covered in a scaly shell.
Expect more details, including pricing, to slither out on Jan. 20.
