This is not an example of multiplayer.

Want you to know about the multiplayer contents of Max Payne 3? Oh, what’s wrong with you? And them? Max Payne shouldn’t be multiplayer! There’s him versus the world! And I’m him! But shush John, this is Rockstar, and they don’t exactly rush into multiplayer do they? No, I suppose not. So are you going to actually find out what it is before making a big fuss? Oh, okay then. Good.

hail, blue blot

It is a day, in part, for talking about old things made new. Lunar Flight is a modern take on Lunar Lander, which allows aspiring astropilots to undertake a full career, transporting cargo from moonbase to moonbase and gathering beacons scattered across the surface of the moon. Essentially, it’s a game that simulates using thrusters to control a tin-can in unfamiliar gravity, attempting to befriend the laws of physics even as they repeatedly plant your face in the lunar dust. All that would be just peachy if every slight nudge of the thrusters didn’t cause your dwindling fuel supply to…dwindle. Gaze at the trailer below.

With Q.U.B.E. coming out on Friday and Dear Esther coming out in February, we thought it might be timely to talk to the sinister cabal of successful indies behind the Indie Fund. That’s the name of the non-publisher group that are financing these games, as well as the exciting heist game, Monaco. What are they up to? And what is so special about the indie games they are financing? We found out, below.>

If a Roguelike sent you a Christmas card, this is what it would say

It’s been a fantastic year for Roguelikes, with continued development of the stalwarts and plenty of releases that have toyed with the formula, sometimes reshaping it until it’s almost unrecognisable. I’ve even managed to have great roiling arguments with people about whether certain games should be called Roguelikes or not. That led to Roguelikelikes, which I am simple enough of mind to be pleased about. I also love that people care so much about these permutations of a thirty one year old game that they are willing to bicker about them with strangers. The dungeons and wildernesses are more populated than ever. So, scrolls and potions at the ready? Down into the depths we go.

Christmas is a time for giving. A time for giving every spare second of your time to a doomed quest for meaningless glory that no-one else will ever care about.

(Christmas is also a time for party-sized tubs of delicious savoury treats such as Mini Cheddars, Cheeselets and dry-roasted peanuts, but that’s another story). (more…)

It's quite hard to capture tipping something up in a screenshot.

After I posted about the very splendid Void last week, another group from DigiPen Singapore, also finalists in the IGF China Student Prize, got in touch with a link to their entry, Terra: The Legend Of The Geochine. It’s a 3D third-person puzzle game, with the rather splendid feature of being able to tilt the world on a central pivot, as well as run around inside it.

People either find things like this very exciting indeed or think that people who do are mad in the head

‘Tis the season to report that many a thing is on sale. The latest discounts to come to my attention are over at Matrix Games, eminently serious-minded purveyors of complex strategic delicacies It’s not often that these grizzled veterans emerge into the wilds – they hate breaking cover – so the only hope for a discount is usually when Matrix have their own sales and this year, the holiday sale includes everything released before 2011, as well as a few from this year. Head over and take a look.

Just why?Remember how we all cheered when CD Projekt removed the DRM from The Witcher 2? Although the GoG version was always free of the legitimate-customers-only punishing code, all other sources came with the straitjacket. Post launch, however, they patched it out, letting customers enjoy the game without concern. It seemed an all-round sensible way to behave, and despite piracy they sold over a million copies of the game. A happy story. Except, well, now according to TorrentFreak (and seemingly corroborated here, along with mentions of a few other titles) the publisher is reportedly threatening alleged (but unproven) pirates with ludicrous legal letters demanding large amounts of money.

Snipers are like normal soldiers, but much further away>. Except when they are behind you! Yikes. All these sniper-things are illustrated in a new non-gameplay trailer from the men at Rebellion, who are currently remaking Sniper Elite to be even more man-shot-in-head-from-half-a-mile-away than ever before. The game itself is out next year, so hopefully we’ll actually get to see some in-game footage between now and then. Anyway, go take a look at the exciting sniper adventures! (more…)
