Mercury Steam's take on Castlevania, vetted by Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, is a very different thing, full of God of War-like action. Including a new Belmont, this is the all-new cast of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
Some, like the Butcher, are simply horrific. Others, like the lovely/frightening Carmilla, may fall under the NSFW category, what with all the exposed cleavage.
Watch for our hands-on impressions of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow coming soon.
When one gamer's FoxBox630 fails, he trades up to the ESexy3. When the FoxBox630 returns from the shop, it's war. This is Ryan Kinnaird's Next Gen Warz, a two-issue comic series due in September from Image Comics.
Writer and artist Ryan Kinnaird used to do illustrations for PSM, and in 2003 created a "mature" Marvel miniseries called X-Men: Phoenix – Legacy of Fire. Now's he back in the comic book spotlight, leveraging his love of writing, drawing, and gaming into a two-issue miniseries for Image Comics that turns the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 into fighting femme fatales.
In an interview with Newsarama, Kinnaird explains the series' spin.
The big spin in the story is that the consoles are actually female characters, with competitive personalities, and a desire to be known as the best. The battle itself takes several of the tropes from the video game world, like fanboys, outspoken developers, and spin doctoring hardware manufacturers and has the consoles use that as ammunition against one another. The consoles battle to show who is most "giga," and demonstrate who is most desirable. In flame war-like fashion they summon developers and video game characters to help demonstrate their superiority.
So it's an intellectual take on the video game console wars with female characters representing the systems. Neat. Why is the Xbox 360 red, and covered in whipped cream?
Don't worry, Nintendo fans. The "Gee" makes an appearance in the second issue, which should be out shortly after the first issue's September 22 release.

Playing the soundtrack of Super Maro Bros. of any number? Old hat. But throwing in all of the sound effects, and doing it on a violin, that's something special.

I can't very well ignore an E3 booth that's handing out free food. Gamer Grub debuted two new flavors at the show, and I went mouth-on with Smores and BBQ to see if they are worthy of our stomachs.
What is Gamer Grub? It's a series of snack mixes containing the vitamins and neurotransmitters gamers need to maintain a quick and agile mind. At least that's what the official website says.
Really what it is is trail mix, much like the kind you'll find in bags hanging around in Target's Archer Farms section. The main difference is that Gamer Grub comes in a pack that can stand up on your desk without falling over, which is very convenient, and according to creator Keith Mullin, higher quality ingredients than Target's version.
I won't pretend to have the sort of refined palate needed to tell one peanut from the other. I'm just a gamer who enjoys eating.
Keith was kind enough to supply me with a couple of bags of the new flavors at E3, so without further ado, the grub. Mind the ink-stained hands.
Gamer Grub BBQ
Official Description: A sweet & tangy blend of Smoked Almonds, BBQ Corn Nuts, Spicy Peanuts, Toffee Peanuts and Honey & BBQ Sesame Sticks.
The Smell: Yes, I smell everything before I eat it. It's just something I do. The overwhelming scent of the BBQ flavor is the sweet, slightly earthy smell of honey-roasted peanuts. I guess it's a combination of the spicy and toffee peanuts plus the honey sesame sticks. It preps your mouth for something sweet.
The Taste: Depending on the mix you get in your mouth, you might get sweet, or you might get spicy. A little too spicy for my tastes, at least where barbeque is concerned. When it's sweet it tastes pretty good. Spicy or sweet, the peanuts tend to overwhelm the other items, and peanuts don't generally scream barbeque to me. Literally a mixed bag.
The Bite: With so many different textures represented, there isn't a uniform bite. It's definitely on the crunchier side. Every once in a while you'll get a bit of extremely hard toffee between your teeth, which is not a pleasant thing.
The Aftertaste: BBQ leaves the taste of strong barbeque potato chips in your mouth. A semi-sweet burning that lingers even after several sips of water.
The Verdict: If I had to recommend one flavor of Gamer Grub, this would not be it. Every once in a while the sweet and spicy blend together in the perfect imitation of barbeque flavor, but those moments are rare.
Gamer Grub Smores
Official Description: No campfire by your console? No problemo, just bust open a pack for a sweet and rich blend of Smores Bites, Marshmallow Chips, Graham Bites, and Chocolate Gems.
The Smell: Smores Gamer Grub gives off a slightly sweet scent that at first had me baffled. I simply couldn't place it. After about half-hour of looking silly with my nose in a bag, I've realized it reminds me of Cinnamon Teddy Grahams, which I guess makes sense.
The Taste: Whoa now, that's sweet. That's really sweet. I like sweet. There's a slight hint of spice to it as well, further suggesting that those graham bites have a kick of cinnamon to them.
The Bite: Compared to the rest of the mix, the graham bits are slightly hard, especially compared to the smooth marshmallow chips and chocolate bites, which seem to be akin to M&Ms with a really light outer shell. My favorite pieces are the Smores bites, which have an outer shell of chocolate, a thin layer of marshmallow, and a graham center. I'd eat a bag of those by themselves.
The Aftertaste: There really isn't much of one. Each piece is a contained unit, so you don't get spices lingering in your mouth as you do with the BBQ flavor.
The Verdict: Smores are delicious, and dangerous. I'd eat a truck if it tasted like Smores, and so I'd gladly eat a bag of more edible material carrying the flavor. I particularly like the inclusion of creamy marshmallow chips, where others might have used the dehydrated marshmallows found in breakfast cereals.
In closing, eat what you like. I like Smores.
At E3, Nintendo showcased numerous 3D versions of games we've played and sometimes loved before. Star Fox 64 in 3D. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time in 3D. A bunch of 8-bit classic Nintendo Entertainment System games.
They all appeared on the 3DS. Some, like Star Fox 64 3D were playable, with updated graphics. Others, like Pilotwings Resort, seemed like more of a sequel. Others, like Ocarina of Time, were presented as non-interactive videos made of better game graphics than the original.
And then there was a curious reel of more than a dozen old-school games, including Mega Man 2, Castlevania, Urban Champion, Kid Icarus, Yoshi's Island, Smash Ping Pong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Tennis, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Mystery of Murasame Castle. The games in this batch were never made with polygons. They were built with flat sprites, many of them dependent on scrolling backgrounds to provide any illusion of depth. The non-interactive reel running on the 3DS that showed these games in 3D demonstrated how Nintendo's next handheld system can give them a little more of a pop-up book feel. It is a nice trick, though not as magical as the fish-tank-style depth seen in games such as Star Fox 64 which use polygon graphics. The most impressive 3D effect in that old-school batch on 3DS was Punch-Out. Bald Bull's fist really popped as it freight-trained toward Little Mac's face.
I asked Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime what to make of all these old-school remakes. Were they all going to be games on the 3DS? Yes, he said, but he cautioned me not to think of them as remakes. Echoing comments by Nintendo's head developer, Shigeru Miyamoto from a roundtable earlier in the week, Fils-Aime said these games were potentially getting more than just ported over. Miyamoto had talked about trying new features in the games that would take advantage of the 3DS' capabilities.
Details are scant on all of these sorta-remakes Nintendo has in the works for its new handheld. But this opening showcase of software does suggest that the company wants to make the old new again. They certainly do have a way to keep the classics on the market.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of rap game Def Jam Rapstar is the one I may never be brave enough to use—it's incredibly deep community, a massively connected online feature that's stuffed with "data porn."
Def Jam and 4mm Games reps showed off much of Rapstar's deep and broad community side at E3 2010. It's where players will go, prior to and after freestyling to original beats or rapping over licensed tracks, to see how well they compare against the global competition.
Players (and Def Jam talent scouts, natch) can keep an eye on the cream of the Rapstar crop here, watching their videos, issuing them challenges and tracking their progress.
Rapstar's online interface, which is accessed from a web browser, lets budding rappers track their level of Rapstar "fame"—including their legions of followers and fans—with the best graphs hip hop may have ever seen, with a smartly designed, Steam-like HUD. Players can also track their "respect" levels, gained by accepting invitations to battle other rappers.
There's also beef.
Def Jam Rapstar community members can form crews with other players and establish rivalries with their online enemies who they regularly battle. Modeling real world rap beef, if a player is kicked out of a crew, he or she instantly has a rivalry against the remaining crew members.
Players can initiate battles, head-to-head rapping competitions, via Rapstar's online interface. Those gauntlet throwdowns can be distributed via social networking tools like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, an oft-forgotten resource.
Watching Def Jam Rapstar raps cruise through the online features of the game, initiating battles and tracking one's stats looked super fast, an efficient way to take your street corner rap-offs to the 'net.
I may be too untalented and too shy to utilize Def Jam Rapstar's community features, but the game may also be a helpful instructional tool. The game's career mode starts players off with some of the easier tracks in the game, songs with lower beats per minute, then scales up the difficulty. Career mode will unlock licensed tracks and items players will want to use in the game's Freestyle mode, including Def Jam Rapstar exclusive beats, audio effects for track-making and video effects for clips filmed with the Xbox Live Vision camera or PlayStation Eye.
Def Jam Rapstar reps say that only about 10% of the game's content is locked down. They also weren't able to talk about their plans for Xbox 360's Kinect camera, but it sounded like something may be in the works.
Most attractive to rappers with dreams of creating their own tracks and not just mimicking others are the custom beats provided by real world producers. 4mm Games and Konami have announced that Just Blaze and DJ Premier will be two of the nine producers contributing beats to the game. We got to listen to one of Just Blaze's contributions, which sounded... fresh? Dope? Look, I don't know the lingo! It had a good beat and you could dance to it.
Track recording, editing and tweaking looked very friendly, the console version of a mini studio that could be a powerful tool in the right hands. Combined with the community tools, we could have a lot of improved rappers and a deep pool of talent from Def Jam to pluck from later this year.
Def Jam Rapstar will be coming to the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, later this year. It launches in North America first on October 5, then in Europe (with localized content) on November 2.
In Ignition Entertainment's El Shaddai, you're guided by a pre-fall Lucifer who carries a cell phone with God on his speed dial. Then things get weird.
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is a 3D action adventure game with a singular look and an even more unique premise. Inspired by the Old Testament's Book of Enoch, you star as Enoch himself, a human called to heaven in order to help God round up seven fallen angels in order to prevent the flood that would wipe out mankind.
The game is being created by game director and character designer Sawaki Takeyasu and producer Masato Kimura, who between them can claim credit for Devil May Cry, Okami, and Viewtiful Joe, with the influence of the latter two readily apparent in El Shaddai's look.
The game was presented at E3 2010 in the form of two trailers, one of which I am sharing with you now, and another that should be available soon.
While I couldn't play the game, I did sit down with Ignition's Shane Bettenhausen to discuss the heavenly journey that Enoch is about to begin.
Enoch isn't alone on his quest. During his journey he'll receive the aid of the four Archangels, Raphael, Uriel, Gabriel, and Michael, shown in the trailer as a giant hand that returns Enoch to the human world.
As impressive as the Archangels are, Lucifel is even more so. He's a time-immune bad boy with a direct line to God via cell phone, and a penchant for 80's goth fashion. I liken him to the Lucifer of Vertigo comics. Bettenhausen compared him to Neil Gaiman's Desire. Either way, the character oozes cool.
He's also the reason Enoch wears a pair of designer jeans under his heavenly armor. They're a gift.
The gameplay, as it stands, is a mix of 2D platforming and 3D exploration and combat. Third-person 3D is your normal method of traversing the world. Enemies will appear in this mode, though some more powerful foes will bring about a RPG-like transition into a special battlefield, where more than quick slashes of Enoch's arch will be required to take them out.
The arch is a weapon Enoch creates by purifying weapons taken by his fallen foes. There'll be a fine assortment of them available, with more powerful versions unlocked as the game progresses. Shane couldn't go into details, but with Devil May Cry being an influence, one might assume guns will play a role.
The look and story aren't the only distinctive qualities of El Shaddai. As we touched on previously, the game features no on-screen interface elements whatsoever, with damage being measured by the condition of Enoch's armor.
From what I've seen of the game so far, his armor should be able to take a lot of punishment. Which it'll have to, because even a warrior tasked by heaven can't always count on his friends. While mentor Lucifel starts off God's favorite, I've got a feeling he might take a distinct downward turn through the course of the game.
El Shaddai is due out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the spring of 2011.

Gentlemen. Might I inquire about your video game plans for this weekend?
I'll be squeezing in some Team Fortress 2 on the Mac when I can this weekend, but after playing a lot of games at E3 2010, I still have loads of writing to do. I may find a few moments to sit down and play more Picross 3D, dreaming of a Nintendo 3DS version (Picross 3D 3D?!), and watching minutes of my off-time fly by.
What about yourself? How will you sooth yourself after this week's massive E3 news blitz?
