Mortal Kombat 11

As Mortal Kombat 11 gears up for its April 23rd launch on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, developer NetherRealm is becoming progressively less coy about the game's full fighter roster. And we can now add another familiar face to the list, with classic character Jade confirmed to return.

Jade made her series debut in 1993's Mortal Kombat 2, as a secret character that players could confront by solving a sequence of clues. She was finally added to the playable fighting roster for the first time in 1995's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and even got a proper bit of backstory, cast as one of the Outworld emperor Shao Kahn's deadly assassins.

Despite being a bit of a fan favourite, Jade was last seen in 2011's Mortal Kombat reboot, so a return is well overdue. And for Mortal Kombat 11, she's back in a big way, albeit now resurrected from the dead as a servant of the Netherrealm. Regardless of those shifting allegiances, her trademark bo staff and razorrang return (as do her withering put-downs), and you can see her revitalised move set in the reveal trailer below. It looks like eyeball-popping finishers are a theme for Mortal Kombat 11.

Mortal Kombat fans hoping to see a few more old faces when the gruesome fighting series' eleventh instalment launches later this year are in luck: developer NetherRealm has revealed that masked swordsman Kabal and the insectoid D'Vorah are making a return.

Kabal, a former member the Black Dragon crime syndicate, first debuted in Mortal Kombat 3 back in 1995, and was originally intended to be one of the good guys. However, various story shenanigans since then have seen Kabal defeated and resurrected on the side of evil, which is where we find him in Mortal Kombat 11.

Kabal's latest appearance (his first as a playable character since Mortal Kombat in 2011) sees the return of his iconic hookswords and respiratory mask, but introduces an enhanced move set. His new face-meet-floor Fatality, which debuts in the trailer below, really is quite something.

The recent reveals of Kabal and D’Vorah in Mortal Kombat 11 have certainly expanded roster. Both are fan favourites, but there are plenty of other characters that are either new or returning after a long hiatus from the series. Information tends to get a bit muddied with character reveals for fighting games, especially when Ed Boon’s hinting at things on Twitter, so I thought I’d put a collection together of the characters that have been officially revealed, as well as who is likely to be joining the roster.

Terry Crews as Jax? The Rock as Shao Khan? Gal Gadot as Kitana? It's fun to imagine Hollywood stars as Mortal Kombat characters. Well, one artist has put pencil to paper and gone one step further.

Artists Boss Logic has been tweeting some awesome images of famous actors as characters from NetherRealm's famous fighting game franchise - and most are perfect fits.

Here's Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews as Jackson "Jax" Briggs, complete with robotic arms. Crews as Jax is such a great fit that Mortal Kombat development chief Ed Boon took to Twitter to add his admiration.

This week, developer NetherRealm revealed Mortal Kombat 11 with a decent chunk of gameplay and a raft of new details.

A bunch of characters were revealed (Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Skarlet and Sonya Blade etc), but for me the most interesting new character in the game is Geras.

Geras, who's a servant of new evil boss Kronika, has the power to manipulate time. Part Sandman, part Prince of Persia, Geras creates devastating objects out of sand and uses them to smash up his opponents. His gameplay reveal, below, reminds me of Tremor from previous Mortal Kombat games.

Mortal Kombat 11 is looking every bit as blood-drenched as ever, but perhaps a little smarter than usual, systems-wise. Unveiled today during a big-budget live event, NetherRealm’s next in the ridiculously over-the-top fighting series looks to be doing things a bit differently. Heavy-hitting moves and fatalities are still gory fun, but winning looks like it’ll require a bit more consideration, juggling new offensive and defensive special gauges. See how it all works in the massive trailer-dump below, including a bunch of fighting and a peek at the new story mode.

Mortal Kombat 11

NetherRealm has unveiled the first gore-drenched gameplay footage of its upcoming fighter Mortal Kombat 11, which launches on Xbox One, PS4, Switch, and PC later this year.

Mortal Kombat 11's first proper airing occurred during a relatively brisk reveal event, held in Los Angeles and livestreamed across the internet earlier today. Alongside a whole bunch of typically gruesome gameplay (which has now been released as a separate video, below), it offered glimpses at a handful of new features for the long-running fighting series, plus several other miscellaneous unveilings.

Much of the event's run-time was spent shining a light on Mortal Kombat 11's character roster. Joining the iconic likes of Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Sonya Blade (who, it was announced, will be voiced by WWE fighter Ronda Rousey), are new faces - including time-controlling Geras - and a few fan-favourites that haven't been seen in a while. Mortal Kombat 2's flesh-munching Baraka is back, for instance, as is Mortal Kombat 9's blood-manipulating Skarlet.

The spine-ripping, heart-stabbing, tooth-smashing, face-eating supernatural superkillers of Mortal Kombat will return next year in Mortal Kombat 11, announced today. The main new features in this next fighting game, as far as I can tell, are ultraviolence that’s even more wince-inducing and dressing up your murderers like pretty dolls. Observe, a cinematic announcement trailer follows.
