We all know that "console" is a dirty word to most Steam users. However, I'm sure there are many of you who play a switch when you're on the go.

If you are an owner of Nintendo's shiny portable you may consider getting Sparklite on the Switch. The game can now be viewed on your device in the eShop. Better still you can add it to your "Watch List" meaning you'll get notifications as soon as pre-order open, news goes live and discounts are offered.

As a heads up the game begins pre-order on November 7th and, like its PC counterpart, launches on November 14th - I can't wait!

'Sparklite aims to leverage its stunning visual style and roguelite mechanics to create a refreshing adventure with a strong environmental message. Indie developer Red Blue Games is teaming up with publisher Merge Games for their upcoming release, Sparklite. A peppy action/adventure title inspired by timeless classics like A Link to the Past and modern hits like Rogue Legacy, Sparklite has the lofty goal of combining a unique setting, timeless visuals, and a small dash of hardcore roguelite elements to create a new titan in the indie space.

At a Merge Games press event in a New York City office, we got to sit down and try out a hands-on demo of Sparklite. Guided along by Red Blue Games co-owner and developer Kevin Mabie, we got the chance to explore the opening hour of the game, play with some of Sparklite's cool gadgets, and get completely owned, multiple times, by the first boss.'

'Recently I met with [Kevin Mabie of Red Blue Games] to talk about Sparklite and take a look at a demo. The story follows a female engineer named Ada who has to save the world of Geodia by taking down the evil Baron. Sparklite powers everything in Geodia and if harnessed safely, it doesn’t leave a negative impact. However, that leads to our villain, the Baron, polluting the world by aggressively mining and burning Sparklite for power.

"[...] we really wanted to confront greed as a whole—especially when it disregards the effects/damage it causes to everyone else and the environment,” Mabie said about the villain’s motivation. “The villain in Sparklite, the Baron, is inspired from the robber barons following the industrial revolution era, often characterized as in pursuit of wealth and power.”

After crashlanding on Geodia, Ada runs into corrupted Gremlins and creatures tarnished by the Baron’s greed. Equipped with a wrench, she collects Sparklite passively to upgrade her gear and fuel a floating town known as The Refuge. This is where NPCs take Ada to after falling in battle.

The demo immediately presents me with a way to upgrade my wrench into a multi-tool through the use of patches. Attaching those to a Patch Board on Ada’s wrench increases her health, damage, and energy used for special abilities. The special abilities function as Gadgets in Sparklite, tying into Red Blue Games’ focus on science.'

This shot shows the cinematic sequence we created for entering the Vaults. Kevin worked on the audio which adds a ton of life and magic. The set piece and environment art was done by Enchae and Rafael did Ada’s animations. Edward, one of our programmers, created the storm effects and even the amulet effects. It’s a hugely gratifying thing to see the work of the whole team come together like this.

As the designer, I (Lucas) spent many days working on the puzzle experiences that we created in the Vaults. These Vaults protect Geodia from evil by keeping powerful technology out of unworthy hands. Once you’ve mastered the puzzles in these vaults, you’ll have reverse-engineered the tech, allowing you to invent it yourself in town.

'Sparklite is pure eye candy. Its bright, vibrant graphics recall the glory days of the 16-bit eras. Animations are buttery smooth and it’s easy to read enemy movements. Despite the random nature of maps, each has a life of its own. I mostly played within a forest, but the game also has other environments to explore. Even in an industry overflowing with “pixel art” games, Sparklite stands out with its distinctive and inviting graphics.

It proudly wears its Zelda inspiration on its sleeves. Combat feels tight and responsive, while the randomly-generated maps keep players on their toes. The fact that you’re always making some kind of progress is what helps raise Sparklite above other roguelikes. I had a blast playing the demo and eagerly await the finished product. Sparklite is a winner in my book.'
