Blood Feud in Transylvania has arrived!

Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania is the latest major expansion for Steel Division 2, focusing on a heavily contested campaign between two former allies: Axis Hungary and recently turned Allied Romania. The mythical Transylvania is the scene of the battlefield.

What can you play with in the new Steel Division: Blood Feud in Transylvania expansion?

  • A new Army General campaign focussing on the bloody conflict in Transylvania between the two “frenemies” in September 1944. Read more about the Army General campaign in this DevBlog.

  • Six new divisions, with two being Axis Hungarian and one German, and three being Allied Romanian.
    • The 2. Páncéloshadosztály (2nd Armored Division), Axis Hungary’s best-equipped formation in the summer of 1944. Expect to find a host of armor, from recon Panzer III M and heavier Parduc and Tigris tanks (Hungarian designations for Panther and Tiger), Nimrod self-propelled AA guns, and well-armed motorized squads.
    • The 25. Hadosztály (25th Infantry Division), a formation primarily made up of Romanian-speaking recruits. A few Zrinyi II assault guns provide fire support, while Raba Vr self-propelled anti-air trucks and off-map 105mm guns with a WM-21 Solyom biplane spotter can also be deployed. In late phases, it gets some support from German 23. Panzerdivision.
    • The Germans are represented with Sperrverband Kessel, an ad-hoc battlegroup formed around the charismatic commander Mortimer von Kessel. Lacking tanks and with a varying mix of soldiers, the formation excels in its support units, from Csendor Hungarian gendarmerie with CV.33 tankettes to flamethrowing SdKfz. 251/16 half-tracks and StuH 42s.
    • The Divizia 9 Infanterie, a well-trained battlegroup, reinforced with the “Jupiter” armored detachment. A mix of German equipment from SdKfz. 222 armored recon cars to Panzer IV and Stug III armor can be found in this formation.
    • The Divizia 8 Cavalerie Motorizata, a partially motorized division, denuded of its tanks, but counting on the disgraced ex-bodyguards of the former Romanian Axis dictator, Ion Antonescu, within its ranks. Some anti-tank units, including Romanian Tacam R-2, Hetzer tank destroyer, and Resita towed guns, can be used.
    • Corpul 6 Teritorial is a reserve formation hastily thrown into combat, with a wide range of infantry, but few tanks and heavy artillery. Soviet troops reinforce this formation, including T-70 recon tanks, Strelki squads, and T34/85s.

  • One new 2vs2 map, Oarba, inspired by the actual battle of Oarba de Mureș. The new level will be delivered to the entire community alongside the expansion.

  • Two new Aces: the Hungarian tank commander Lieutenant Ervin Tarczay and Romanian fighter Captain Dan Vizanti. Read more about them in this DevBlog here.

Disclaimer

We noticed a few graphical issues with this version:
  • one Hungarian tank (command TURAN I) has a WIP production icon
  • some Hungarian tanks in Army General are missing their side view picture in their stat sheet.
  • Hungarian air squadrons in Army General have a placeholder (Panzer-Lehr) coat-of-arms.
Those issues are already fixed on our end but couldn't be included in this version without dlaying it. Therefore they will be quickly hotfixed.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

Hello commander!

It’s great to be back. And we are the bringer of good news. Get ready for a new chapter of Steel Division 2: the latest expansion Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania will launch next week on January 19th!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1571580/Steel_Division_2__Blood_Feud_in_Transylvania/

Of course, our heartfelt apologies for the continued delay, but with the contested Romanian battlefields drawing ever nearer, today’s DevBlog is a recap of all the new features, divisions, units, and Army General campaign you’ll get to play with Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania.

An overview

Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania is the latest major expansion for Steel Division 2, focusing on an often overlooked series of battles fought between two former allies: Axis Hungary and recently turned Allied Romania. The battlefield: Transylvania, where blood has flowed more than once.

What will Steel Division: Blood Feud in Transylvania feature?

  • A new Army General campaign focussing on the first stages of combat in Transylvania between the two “frenemies” as it historically happened from September 5th to 15th, 1944. Read more about the Army General campaign in this blog post here.
  • Six new divisions. Two will be Axis Hungary and one German, while three are Allied Romanian.

    • The 2. Páncéloshadosztály (2nd Armored Division), Axis Hungary’s best-equipped formation in the summer of 1944. Expect to find a host of tanks, from recon Panzer III M and heavier Parduc and Tigris tanks (Hungarian designations for Panther and Tiger), Nimrod self-propelled AA guns, and well-armed motorized squads.
    • The 25. Hadosztály (25th Infantry Division), a formation primarily made up of Romanian-speaking recruits. A few well-regarded Zrinyi II assault guns provide fire support, while WW1 vintage Raba Vr self-propelled anti-air trucks and off-map 105mm guns with a WM-21 Solyom biplane spotter can also be deployed. In late phases, the division gets some support from German 23. Panzerdivision's elements.

    • The Germans are represented with Sperrverband Kessel, an ad-hoc battlegroup formed around the charismatic commander Mortimer von Kessel. Lacking tanks (but not StuGs!) and with a mix of German and Hungarian soldiers, the formation excels in its support units, from Csendor Hungarian gendarmerie with CV.33 tankettes to flamethrowing SdKfz. 251/16 half-tracks and StuH 42s.
    • The Romanian Divizia 9 Infanterie, a large and well-trained battlegroup, is reinforced with the “Jupiter” armored detachment. A mix of German equipment from SdKfz. 222 armored recon cars to Panzer IV and Stug III armor can be found in this formation.
    • The Divizia 8 Cavalerie Motorizata, a partially motorized division, denuded of its own tanks, but counting on a few captured Hungarian armored vehicles. It also welcome the disgraced ex-bodyguards of the former Romanian Axis dictator, Ion Antonescu, within its ranks. Some anti-tank units, including Romanian Tacam R-2, Hetzer tank destroyer, and Resita towed guns, can be used.

    • Corpul 6 Teritorial is a reserve formation hastily thrown into combat, with a wide range of infantry, but few armor of its own. Soviet troops later reinforce this formation, including T-70 recon tanks, Strelki squads and T34/85s.
  • One new map, Oarba, which is a 2vs2 map inspired by the actual battlefields of the battle of Oarba de Mureș. The new level will be delivered to the entire community alongside the expansion.

  • Two new Aces: the Hungarian tank commander Lieutenant Ervin Tarczay and Romanian fighter ace Captain Dan Vizanti. Read more about them in this dedicated DevBlog here.

Hello!

It is that month of the year again! The holiday season is upon us, and as in previous years, we’ll take a brief break. R&R is on Eugen’s Christmas menu.

Before we continue, we are now celebrating our fourth holiday break with you. Four years in a row; how the time flies! Batteries will be recharged, and we’ll be back in the new year - 2023 - before you know it!

We don’t want to leave you completely empty-handed. We realize that the recent weeks have been quiet, but the team has worked hard on a new Steel Division 2 patch!

A new patch

We are still completing the next major expansion to launch for Steel Division 2, Blood Feud in Transylvania. It is coming soon, but we are putting on the finishing touches, including the last localisations. However, for you not to wait until after the holidays, we decided to release the accompanying patch now.

Read what the new patch brings by following the link below!

What can you expect in 2023?

So, as mentioned, Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania is going to be dropping in the near future. A release date is on hold, but the moment we know more, we’ll share it with you!

Don’t forget to submit your Czech or Slovak name to be included in the upcoming Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk mini-expansion.

Follow the link here.

There are some specific rules, which you can read about by checking the above link. The thread will be kept open until shortly before Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk’s release. There is still time to submit your name!

And… that’s not all. We have Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk in the pipeline. Even more (big) content is planned for Steel Division 2. More news to come in 2023!

Until next year

That’s it for this DevBlog (and this year!). We will see each other on the other side, commander. The first week of January sees our return to the offices. It has been a pleasure. Let’s make 2023 a kick-ass year!

Hello commanders,

We hope you have been well. Heading into the final month of the year, we have a couple of small but exciting tidbits of Steel Division 2 news to share with you.

Keep reading to find out more!

Steel Division: Blood Feud in Transylvania

The first news to drop concerns the next major expansion, Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania. As we mentioned in last week’s DevBlog, video briefings and voiceovers are done, and the testing of the Army General campaign is in full swing.

We can also report that division balance, models, assets, and illustrations - these critical components have now been finished. We are still working on the localization for the expansion in the various languages supported. A release date for Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania is being planned as we speak!

We will get back to you as soon as we know more. In the meantime, the Strike Team will soon receive the go-ahead to stream the full expansion! So keep a close watch on your favorite streamer.

A new long-range artillery model

As pointed out to us by a community member on our Steam forums, historically, the U.S. 3rd Armored Division had a special artillery formation attached from mid-July 1944, almost uninterrupted until the end of the war. This was the 991st Field Artillery Battalion, equipped with the M12 GMC, which hosted an old WW1 French gun, the GPF 155mm. This piece, in its original towed variant, will also be found in the Allied and Axis arsenal, in the upcoming Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk.

The old French artillery piece was mounted on a modified M3 (Lee) tank chassis, turning this venerable gun into a self-propelled unit. The model for the M12 GMC was long ago completed for Steel Division: Normandy ‘44; we decided it would be worthwhile to add it to Steel Division 2. The U.S. 3rd Armored Division will receive this new unit, where commanders can deploy it in Phase B and C as a “poor man’s Hummel,” so to speak. It will be very similar to the German unit, though with a lower Rate of Fire and less ammo, but with a longer range and a more heavily armored structure.

Join the Czechoslovak Army!

The time has come for you to enlist! With the upcoming Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk, we get back to the old Eugen tradition of granting the community the chance to add their (real) names to the game. These names will appear as a specific nation’s squad leader. Each name will either have to be of Czech or Slovak origins!

There are some specific rules, which you can read about in this dedicated post here, but please see below for an abridged recap.

In short:
  • We randomly pick names from a nation’s list. We cannot attribute a name to a specific unit.
  • You can only submit a family or surname. We don’t pick first names.
  • One person, one name.
  • The name must be fitting to the nation. We aim for authenticity and realism, after all.
  • Don’t comment on other people’s names.
  • Check other names to see if yours isn’t already proposed.
  • Don’t bother being insulting or funny or an edgelord - we will carefully review all names for their specific language.

Hello commanders!

Yes, it’s been a while since our last contact. We offer our sincere apologies! However, with this DevBlog, we don’t come empty-handed.

Continue reading to discover the latest happenings for Steel Division 2.

Development keeps apace

The various Steel Division 2 projects keep churning, even if the pace might be slower. The team is hard at work testing, bug checking, fixing, sharing improvements, etc.

Now, as you know, the Eugen team is small, and we are knee-deep on various projects at the same time, including Steel Divison 2’s “younger” cousin WARNO. This means that our developers need to shift between tasks and games. And invariable, some delays creep in. Rest assured that our designers are hard at work on Steel Division 2. This includes the next major expansion, Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania and Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk.

We can lift the tip of the veil in today’s DevBlog.

Development keeps apace

First one up is Blood Feud in Transylvania: all the video briefings and voice acting is done and integrated into the game. We are still testing the Army General campaign, for both sides, and the Strike Team is looking at the Oarba map as we speak.

Meanwhile, we are making good progress on Siege of Dunkirk with all the models having been finished. However, the rather painstaking work of reskinning the existing models still needs to be done. The Allied battlegroup, CIABG, already exists in alpha form, with all units and equipment, but needs some more balancing and finetuning. Festung Dunkirchen will soon benefit from the same treatment.

Some more details on CIABG

So, how is the Czechoslovakian Independent Armoured Brigade Group actually shaping up? The battlegroup’s main strengths are the TANK and AA categories, backed up by solid RECON and ART. while INF and AT, on the other hand, are below average.

  • Infantry is clearly the division’s Achilles heel, with only one card of veteran Czech Motostřelci (motorized rifles) and half a card of Ženisté (assault engineers). The rest of the soldiers are eager but hastily trained FFO squads. These are French partisans retrained for regular army use, the name standing for Forces Françaises de l’Ouest. To round out this category, some British Converted Gunners units can also be deployed.
  • A new unit added are Converted RAF squads. These are not-needed admin personnel and ground staff from the British RAF with minimum training. Like their Luftwaffe counterparts, these servicemen are not thrilled with their assigned frontline role and carry the Disheartened trait. Yet, unlike the other crews, they are better equipped with old (and rather cool looking) Vickers K LMG taken from elderly bi-planes (and resurrected from Steel Division: Normandy 44).
  • While it might lack boots on the ground, the CIABG has a lot of armor: from Cromwell, Stuart light tanks, a few heavy-hitting Fireflies, as well as British Churchill tanks. The Allied’s ubiquitous Sherman is not present though. All AT guns are of the towed variant - no tank destroyers can be found in the battlegroup’s arsenal.
  • In terms of the airforce, Czechoslovakian Spitfire Mk.Vb and IXc will provide the main fighter screen.
  • British recon Spitfire and Spitbomber will also be featured, as well as several CS Typhoon variants (rockets, bombs, etc.).
  • The occasional heavier bomber support will come in the form of Mitchel II (the American B-25C in British service. This a new unit, not having seen action since Steel Division: Normandy 44.

Hello commanders,

We hope this message finds you well. Once again, apologies for the radio silence, but not to worry, we are hard at work on Steel Division 2. As much as possible, we will try to give you semi-regular updates, like today’s DevBlog. Some tidbits of things cooking in Eugen’s kitchen.

What’s that smell?

So, first things first: the next major expansion, Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania, is coming along nicely. The new map, Oarba, a 2vs2 battlefield, has passed QA testing and scenario settings tweaking. What is left to do for the team is to design the AI for each scenario. When this is done, we move to the last step, which is to invite the Strike Team to come in and give their verdict on a final balance pass.

What else?

The main Turda Army General strategic campaign is also being tested, from start to finish, by our ever-hard-working QA department.

In other news, the 3D designers are still busy producing the new models for the upcoming Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk mini-expansion. This includes new and reworked Cromwell tanks, new artillery guns, and more.

Until soon!

A short and brief DevBlog this time. We promise to have more substantial updates on Steel Division 2 in the not-too-distant future!

Hello all!

We hope you are well. As you noticed, last week we didn’t publish a DevBlog. This might happen more often in the future, but make no mistake, the Eugen team is very hard at work on all things related to Steel Division 2.

As we are deep in the designing and developing phase on various projects, it is at times better to keep a lid on work-in-progress and wait until we actually have something to show. Like today!

Let’s give a brief update on what’s cooking in the Steel Division 2 kitchen.

Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk

Our next Nemesis DLC, the Siege of Dunkirk mini-expansion, is ever advancing. We are currently working on the 3D models to be featured, specifically the Allied French infantry deployable as FFO troops. This stands for Forces Françaises de l’Ouest (Western French Forces) which were attached to the Czechoslovakian CIABG battlegroup.

These French squads were almost entirely made up of former FFI maquisards (French partisans) only recently turned into regular soldiers. Nevertheless, these French combatants provided the Allies with almost 65.000 men in September and October 1944, rising to 85.000 soldiers in early 1945.

This influx of manpower was used to block or besiege the various German “fortresses” remaining on the French Atlantic Coast. While the Axis aimed to prevent the use of important harbors, they failed to fix thousands of regular Allied troops with these holdouts. Instead, the Allies deployed reserves, second-line, or improvised forces such as the FFO to great effect, while the veteran armies kept on their drive to Berlin.

The FFO, under French control, were at the complete back of the queue in terms of equipment and supplies. A dire situation compounded by a devastated and still partially occupied country with a provisional government just starting to function. Within this context, the FFO were left in a state of neglect for most of the war. Only through Système D (the soldiers’ own resourcefulness) or with the support of local British, Commonwealth, or American units, could the French stay in the fight. The common joke was that the FFO actually meant Forces Françaises Oubliées with “oubliées” meaning “forgotten.”

In other news, Steel Division 2 League is back! Our valued community member Protosszocker is at it again, with the League’s 9th Season to kick off on Sunday the 31st of October. Sign-up will close on Tuesday the 25th of October.

No matter the skill level or experience, the Steel Division 2 League is the perfect place for players to enter online competitive Steel Division 2. Regardless of the outcome, either join as a competitor or tune in to watch the League unfold.

More info about Steel Division 2 League can be found here.

Please note that the tournament is not organized by Eugen. We support it by sharing the message and putting Eugen’s stamp of approval for guaranteed fun - but that’s it!

Bidding you au revoir!

Before we leave you, a small update on the upcoming major expansion Steel Division 2: Blood Feud in Transylvania. The new Oarba map, a 2vs2 battlefield, is nearing completion. All victory conditions (Capture the Flag and Destruction) and deployment modes (Meeting Engagement, Closer Combat, and Breakthrough) have been completed. The AI behavior on these maps still needs to be set and tweaked, but we are getting closer!

Steel Division 2 - [EUG] Gal Marcel Bigeard
Hello commander,

We hope you are well! First of all, we wanted to apologize for the lack of a DevBlog last week. The Eugen team has been hard at work on the World War III cousin of Steel Division 2, preparing for the latest major milestone for WARNO.

With that out of the way, we do have some interesting Steel Division 2 tidbits to share with you today.

Blood Feud in Transylvania

We are steadily advancing ever forwards with the next Steel Division 2 expansion, Blood Feud in Transylvania. As mentioned, we have been busy with WARNO, which influences our work on other projects. See the packaging of our new expansion as a Russian doll: we need to complete one step before being able to continue to the next one. This, at times, creates bottlenecks.

Such as?

  • We are working on the Army General campaign map. This needs to be finalized before we are able to record each faction’s briefing video. Likewise, the voice acting needs to be completed in order to align the sound and video briefings; and we need these briefings to be finished before we can integrate it into the game. One puzzle piece after another.
  • Once done, the Army General campaign needs to be thoroughly checked from start to finish, fixing issues and typos, see how each turn pans out, restarts, etc. All of this takes time.

But, we do have one piece of art to show off: the introduction video of Blood Feud in Transylvania is ready. Let us know what you think!

Siege of Dunkirk

Nemesis: Siege of Dunkirk DLC is also coming up. The 3D models to be featured in this mini-expansion are being worked on as we speak. The Czechoslovakian infantry has been finalized, and the French FFO (Forces Françaises de l’Ouest) are being mustered and are almost ready to be deployed.

Until next week!

That’s it for this DevBlog. One other thing before we leave: our talented Strike Team members will stream the first Blood Feud in Transylvania[/i] divisions later this week. Keep an eye out on our Discord if you want to check it!
