Peek behind the curtain at what went into making the best-dressed Heroes and Units in Conqueror’s Blade: Paragons, a season inspired by medieval France's storied history.
We chatted with Anton Mamhionov, Creative Director at Booming Tech, about the inspiration behind the best-dressed heroes of Pays-de-la-Gloire.
The Hero and Unit Attire of Paragons takes inspiration from everything from Gendarme cavalry to Joan of Arc’s armour itself; what other real-life armours did you take inspiration from for the design of the Attires?
For Banner Guards, we used historical references of armour during the Battle of Agincourt. The unit features a variety of headsets (bascinet helmets with just base and face protection parts), weapons, and body armour.
With the Ordre de l'Aigle Hero Attire, we went with a later medieval armour set design, widely spread across European countries and added some textiles to give the set a unique look.
And for Alchemists, we began with a medieval nuns concept for textile elements and then added authentic leather-made elements to make the unit look like chirurgiens (surgeons) and alchemists, along with slots for their tools and smoke bombs.
When designing the Attire, what inspiration do you take from real-life armour to turn them into something original for Heroes and Units to wear in-game (such as certain shapes or colours)?
It all depends on the season and the direction we decide to choose. Every season has a specific “mood map” – a basic guideline of how we want players to feel while playing units or wearing an attire.
Generally speaking, we use historical references of armour and weapons and then brainstorm what elements could be highlighted in order to support the seasonal mood. Sometimes we add fictional elements from paintings and art, or we look for specific “mood elements” from civilian or ceremonial clothing in the history of the targeted nation. For example, we use tournament helmets, parade armour, and civilian clothing elements and add those to combat armour.
Gold and silver play a huge part in the materials of the armours; was that a deliberate choice to show the elite status of the units and characters of this season?
Yes, while medieval France in the time period of the Siege of Orleans wasn’t featuring much gold or silver used on royal armour, we wanted to make French-inspired seasonal armour the most luxurious and make it stand out from other European-inspired attires that are already in the game.
How did you pick the symbols that adorn Attire this season, such as wings, laurels, filigree, and the fleur-de-lys?
With each season, we want to use local symbols that are connected to a specific culture and can be globally recognised and associated with a targeted culture by the majority of people around the globe.
As a top-level seasonal store attire, the laurel is a symbol of victory in the fictional universe of Conqueror’s Blade – the same as Romans initially saw it.
We use photographs and articles, and this is why the Season X: Highlanders in-game logo featured a thistle flower as the in-game logo and armour element, and a unicorn-shaped maul attire. This is why we used fleur-de-lys in Paragons and a rooster-shaped grip on the Shortsword (the rooster is a national animal symbol of France).
The wings on the Ordre de la Pucelle Hero Attire are phoenixes on the shoulder pads of the Joan of Arc-inspired character in our game (Gabrielle-Mäelys). It symbolises the rebirth of the nation that this character brings with her heroism.
How long does the entire process take to create Attire, from original conception to final outcome?
It much depends on the complexity of design, research and 3D production. On average, it can take from 12 to 15 workdays for the 2D design concept and then from 35 to 40 workdays to create a fully-finished 3D product that meets the quality standard.

While many historical sites and buildings are eroded by the sands of time, some of the most awe-inspiring and impressive medieval structures still stand strong and tough in France today, inspiring millions of visitors who come to marvel at these ancient locations every year.
Conqueror’s Blade: Paragons wears its real-life French cultural and architectural influence on its sleeve in Pays-de-la-Gloire, especially in the city of Aurelian when battling for La Grande Gloire and navigating its bridges, walls, and magnificent monasteries.
From fascinating fountains to commanding castles, join us as we explore the Medieval landmarks of France still standing today, perfect for an inspiring and educational vacation.
Minerve
Minerve is a small but stunning Medieval village ensconced between two gorges and lodged atop a range of rocks. Originally a Cathar city, Minerve is home to a stunning 11th century church of Saint-Etienne. Minerve also houses exceptional vineyards, first planted by Romans, and the wines made there are famous for their fruity and mellow tastes.
The village also features astounding natural bridges, tunnels and arches carved by the surrounding rivers themselves, which become accessible to explore during the drier months.
Château de Falaise
Château de Falaise (or Falaise Castle), housed in the Norman city of Falaise, was built in the 10th century and is most famously the birthplace of William the Conqueror (1028–1087).
His mother, Helvera, was said to have had a horrifyingly prophetic nightmare while pregnant with William in the castle, in which a tree grew from her stomach and its branches reached across the channel to England, casting a tremendous shadow over the country like a monster. As we know now, this prediction would come true in a sense, as William would go on to conquer the Anglo Saxons and become King of England.
Château de Falaise has more than just rich history to admire; you can also see evidence of the people who called the castle their home, thanks to William the Conqueror’s son, King Henry I of England, who returned to rebuild the fortress and added plenty more intimidating towers and defensive capabilities.
With its storied walls housing a museum, a replica trebuchet, and graffiti carved into the walls by bored soldiers during the Hundred Years’ War, Château de Falaise is teeming with history just waiting to be uncovered.

Flaran Abbey
Fancy feasting your eyes on works of fine art from legendary artists such as Monet, Dali, Picasso, Rodin, and many more, set against a backdrop of a medieval abbey? Then look no further than Flaran Abbey in Valence-sur-Baïse, France. Constructed in 1151, this monastery is home to an enormous collection of great works of art, including paintings and sculptures.
You can also sit awhile in the beautiful gardens that surround the abbey, perfect for musing on a beautiful work of art while enjoying the scenery.
Fountain of Innocents
Located on Rue de Innocents in Paris, France, this auspicious 16th-century fountain marks a site with a less than pleasant history. Formerly a 12th-century medieval cemetery by the name of Holy Innocents’ Cemetery (Cimetière des Innocents), this Parisian graveyard was once the biggest in the city. However, as the years wore on and more bodies were buried within its walls, it became over-filled, and the stench (along with the pests it attracted) became a serious problem. Thus, the cemetery was closed.
The bodies were disinterred and relocated to the Paris Catacombs, and the memorial of the Fountain of Innocents took shape on the original gravesite in the 16th century. Old cemetery arches and walls can still be seen in the now bustling square full of markets and cafes, ensuring that its history is remembered.

Château de Machecoul
The ruins of a medieval castle with a dark past lies in wait for curious visitors in Machecoul, France. The legend of Bluebeard is linked to Château de Machecoul, as it was home to the inspiration behind the murderous character.
Gilles de Rais was a medieval lord from Brittany whose crimes were numerous and horrendous. After fighting alongside Joan of Arc in the Hundred Years’ War, his luxurious lifestyle lead to a keen interest in the occult. His efforts to summon demons and create gold through alchemy led to an unfortunate habit of slaughtering children. This led to his arrest at Château de Machecoul itself, followed by his conviction and execution in 1440. Many believe his life inspired Charles Perrault’s tale of Bluebeard (Barbe Bleue), a decadent nobleman with a penchant for spousal murder.
Chateau de Machecoul (or ‘Chateau de Gilles de Rais’ or ‘Bluebeard’s Castle’) still lies in ruins, but the current owners have made efforts to restore it, and now offer tours of the grounds where visitors can immerse themselves in the French history it has to offer.
Engross yourself in French history with our Conqueror’s Tales, and discover what inspired the people and culture of Paragons, from their delectable food to their inspiring literature, to the gallant Joan of Arc.
Tactical Battle Mode is back! Fight in a battle of epic proportions from April 22 to 27 (23:59 server time), where equipment is lacking, and strategy is everything.
This returning mode pits teams of players against each other in Siege battles with pre-provided Units, so order them wisely! Attackers will be equipped with two Rare artillery, while defenders get only one. Armour will also be supplied that complements the weapon you wield.
Runes and other personal effects will not be active; only your favourite weapon, trusty steed, and skills are your own.
Drops will be active for this mode, so you can pick up Greenwood Keys from the Lords of the Forest Event for your tactical efforts, and cash them in for rewards.
The Open-World of Conqueror’s Blade is full of opportunities for adventure, inspirational scenery, and surprises waiting to be discovered. From battling for dominion over fiefs and fortresses in Territory Wars, to challenging loitering Bandits to combat, and scouring abandoned sites for treasure, the Open-World has something for everyone.
We talked to Yifei Li, the Virtual World Creative Designer atBooming Tech about the vision behind the Open-World, the challenges of balancing the world, and the hopes for the future.
When it comes to the Open-World of Conqueror’s Blade (and the adventures and battles that take place within it) - how has your vision changed over the years, from launch to now?
The idea for the Open-World was born out of inspiration and intuition. When we finished the individual gameplay (Field and Siege battles), we thought, "why don't we enrich this into a world?" So it seemed natural to us that an Open-World would emerge, but the content of such a world presentation and the form of the campaign is really what we have been exploring since the beginning of development.
What we started with was a battle for territory in a small fictional land; by the time it went live, the Conqueror’s Blade world had been enriched into five regions, and the battle for territory was left to the players to form their own clans to fight.
As the seasons progressed, we also completed the Anadolou and Longting lands, each with its own distinctive style. Our vision changed from "we need an Open-World" to "we want to show what Conqueror’s Blade is through an Open-World", then "we want to use Conqueror’s Blade's Open-World to communicate our thoughts about civilisation and ancient warfare". Of course, we are still far from the last step, and the current Open-World does not meet our expectations at the moment.
How would you like to see the Open-World progress or change going forward?
Let's start with the existing NPC behaviours. We hope to complete a round of in-depth improvements, both in terms of the richness of NPC assembly behaviour, their intelligence, and strength. Enriching this world and introducing more events to give players more combat content to explore and experience is what we expect from our Open-World.
In addition, we want the world to be a vehicle for Conqueror’s Blade’s culture and an important part of the player's experience. We are working on enhancing each area of Open-World with more interactive content that tells the story of what has happened in this world and brings it to life. We are grateful to all the players who have experienced and lived in this world, and we hope that it will become a shared creation with our players.
What were the challenges when it came to balancing Units and Weapon Classes for Open-World PVP?
This is very challenging because, in PVP matchmaking, we want players to have an experience that shows individuality and a wide range of options. So in our matchmaking balancing, we focused heavily on improving weak corps and nerfing mechanics that didn't make sense. In Open-World PVP, however, we have focused more on the contradictory and compatible spirit of dedication and heroism, so there is a significant difference between this and the PVP matchmaking balance. We will try to balance these two directions and also bring a wider variety of tactics and gameplay to the territorial battles while keeping the PVP matches reasonable.
Designing the Open-World must have been demanding but a joy; what real-life landscapes did the team take inspiration from over time? One of the key updates we made during Season VIII: Dynasty was the creation of a brand new city - Hao Jing. We drew on the life experiences of various members in the production process and the photos they recorded from their travels to places such as Xi'an, the ancient capital of China's Tang Dynasty, and the Tangcheng film and television base in Xiangyang. These became important photo references, along with their own impressions left in their minds when we went looking for the design of Hao Jing.
At the same time, the experience and knowledge of the designers from Europe became a great help when we were making Season VII: Wolves of Ragnarok and the whole atmosphere of the season was greatly enhanced compared to previous seasons.
Do you consider adding any real-life landmarks to the Open-World scenery based on the region that inspires a Season?
Yes, we are keen to give players a taste of the different civilisations featured in the game, which is part of the core experience. We have already experimented with this in previous seasons: in Season VII: Wolves of Ragnarok, for example, we placed Heilung Fjord (an area inspired by Scandinavian landscapes) on the shores of Vajk's Lake where it exists in the Conqueror’s Blade story. In Season VIII: Dynasty, we placed Linwu Fortress in the Maoyang, and the Longting region in a landscape similar to the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, China. These are all very seasonal and regionally-specific cultural symbols, and we want all players to feel this.
In future seasons, we would like to bring more large world landscapes with the characteristics of different civilisations to the players. Want to peek behind the curtain at all things Conqueror’s Blade? Check out our look at the Paragons Weapon Skins, and stay tuned for more articles!
