Conqueror's Blade - Kaeden
When Shakespeare penned Macbeth in the early 1600s, William could never have imagined how culture and literature would be forever changed by the tragedy. The Scottish Play may have been filled with fantasy, deceit, and murder, but how true was the classic story to the life of the king on which it was based?

The real Macbeth was King of the Scots and the Kingdom of Alba from 1040-1057 and went by many names—Mac Bethad mac Findlaích, MacBheatha mac Fhionnlaigh, or Macbeth son of Findlay. While his life may not have been as dramatic as Macbeth’s (that’s theatre, darling!), some of the names, places, and actions remain the same, and their influence indebted more to fact than fiction.
Something Wicked This Way Comes
The tale of a man with no claim to the throne, overcome with a lust for power that sees him commit terrible acts brought about by the prophecies of a gaggle of witches, is just that—a story. Little is known about Macbeth due to his reign having come and gone almost 1,000 years ago, but we can be quite sure that there was no Lady Macbeth lurking in the shadows and forcing his hand, as happens in the Shakespeare work. In fact, the real Macbeth’s wife, Gruoch, was a noble queen, standing steadfastly by her husband’s side and ruling alongside him. Gruoch’s loyalty to her beau extended beyond the realm of the living, as she was even said to have committed suicide following Macbeth’s death.

Macbeth was not quite as bloodthirsty and delusional as Shakey made him out to be—he ruled over ancient Scotland with a steady hand for almost a decade and came to be monarch in a natural and honourable way (for the time).

The Real Macbeth
Is This A Dagger Which I See Before Me?
King Macbeth may be based on a real historical figure but his right to the crown was legitimate and didn’t require direct assassination. This respectable claim was owed to his own mother’s bloodline, who was descended from Kenneth MacAlpin, a King considered to be the founder of Scotland who ruled over Alba and the Picts from 843–858.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth, however, had virtually no claim to the throne, hence his murderous and underhanded act of stabbing Duncan while he slept, but not before some brooding reflection. Duncan was also not the elderly or strong leader he was portrayed as in Macbeth and was actually a young and weak king. Macbeth’s succession to the throne came after King Duncan rode to the region of Moray, where Macbeth sat as ruler. Duncan was slain during the battle, and Macbeth took his place as King of Scots.
Blood Will Have Blood
While the fictional and factual Macbeths may not have all that much in common, their untimely deaths are one thing they share. The Bard’s version of Macbeth was beheaded by Macduff as revenge for slaughtering his family after he rode into battle with the murdered Duncan’s son and forces from England.

The real Macbeth also met a somewhat sticky end at the hands of the English and Duncan’s son. In 1057, a battle at the Aberdeenshire village of Lumphanan would be Macbeth’s last, following a mortal blow delivered by Duncan I’s son, Malcolm.

All in all, the themes of poetic justice in death and a lust for control are catnip to a writer, not to mention a warning to those in power to not abuse their position. Shakespeare is said to have written Macbeth as a tribute to King James I, a newly crowned Scot, whose ancestors play the role of the heroes.

National Geographic Day is marked every year on January 27 and pays tribute to the incredible National Geographic Magazine and Society. Funding research and conservation projects worldwide, National Geographic asks us to look at the world we live in and appreciate the true beauty and fragility of nature, as well as the people living here and their cultures.

To celebrate National Geographic Day, we’ve decided to take a look at the physical and social geography of the real-life land that inspired the Highlands in Season X: Highlanders-—Scotland!
Territory
Just as your House fights for dominion over fiefs and cities in the Seasonal Campaign, so too did ancient Scots as they claimed territories throughout history. While England was constantly encroaching on Scotland’s borders, prompting warriors like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce to push them back and confront them in the name of independence, Scotland spent some time in the medieval period trying to expand their own domains.

One of these expansion attempts was in Ireland, an isle to the west of Scotland. While the First Scottish War of Independence against England was taking place, Robert the Bruce’s brother Edward landed in Larne, Co. Antrim in 135 to invade Ireland and install himself on the throne as per the King’s orders to create a larger united front against England. This didn’t go to plan, as a famine killed off most of the Scots armies, and they failed to hold onto captured areas.

A hillside view of Kinlochleven, a village in the Highlands of Scotland.

Topography and Temperature
Scotland is the most mountainous region in Great Britain and is characterised by dramatic peaks, lush forests, and many islands. It’s also home to the highest peak in the entirety of the United Kingdom—-Ben Nevis. Standing loftily at a summit height of 1,345 metres, the mountain attracts thousands of visitors per year, all set on conquering it.

Scotland is usually thought of as having extremely cold weather, but https://www.visitscotland.com/about/practical-information/weather/ states that the climate is “actually quite moderate and very changeable”. In the Summer months, the average maximum temperature can range from 15°C (59°F) to 17°C (63 °F), so while it might not be arctic, it’s still a tad chilly. Brr!
Towns
Edinburgh has served as the capital of Scotland since 1437, but the iconic city actually replaced Scone, a medieval town in Perth. After James I was assassinated in Perth, the throne was moved to Edinburgh Castle, and its association with kings and coronations ended.

Several well-known Scottish municipalities also underwent name changes throughout history, including Perth itself, which was previously named “St. John’s Toun” in honour of the town’s church dedicated to St John the Baptist. St. Andrews, the site of the famous golf course frequented by Mary Queen of Scots, went through many renamings, including “Kilrule” after St Regulus (or Rule).

You can observe National Geographic Day by exploring the Scottish-inspired ancestral home of the Highlands, Broch Eastray, and reading up about the must-see landmarks Scotland has to offer.

Hogmanay has come and gone, and as we venture further into the new year, we mustn’t forget another special day for Scotland—Burns Night! Read on to learn more about this special occasion, and to claim an exclusive free gift from MY.GAMES Market.

While not officially observed as a national holiday, the life and works of poet Robert Burns are celebrated on his birthday, January 25, with staple Scottish foods, parties, and tributes made to the great bard. Some of his most famous work includes Tam O’ Shanter, Auld Lang Syne, and A Red, Red Rose, invoking themes of empathy, encouragement, and everyday life. Modern Scots still adore his poems and songs for their universal themes like love, life, and a bit of humour for good measure.

The very first Burns Night was held by his friends on the fifth anniversary of his death in 1801, with a feast and performances of his brilliant works made to honour his life and cultural contributions.

Traditional Scottish dishes and delicacies are consumed as part of a Burns Night meal, including haggis, neeps and tatties, and of course, a few slugs of whisky. As the evening goes on, his poems are recited, toasts given, and to end the night, Auld Lang Syne is sung by all the guests with crossed arms and joined hands.

You can celebrate Burns Night in Conqueror’s Blade with a free gift, available to claim via MY.GAMES Market until February 1 (23:59 CET)!
