Conqueror's Blade - Kaeden
Introduced as part of Season VII: Wolves of Ragnarok, Runes essentially allow you to augment your weapons and armour in order to increase their effectiveness and your hero’s attributes and abilities. It’s a system that benefits heroes with more upgrade options the more they advance in a season, which promises more dynamic and unpredictable battles as the final stages of a campaign draw near.

First, in order to unlock the ability to equip Runes, you need to visit the War Scholar and complete ‘The Lore of the Runes’ quest. Thereafter, you can equip Runes either from the Seasonal Runes tab of the Season Interface (press F5), or by selecting the Rune icon on the Character Screen (press P) when an applicable item is selected.

The Runes you can assign to your equipment are dictated to by your Season Level. At level 1, you can only equip a single basic Rune (The First Trial), while at level 45, every Rune is unlocked (The Twelfth Trial).

Runes are not in-game items that you need to collect to be able to equip them. Rather they are etchings that you learn to mark your equipment with. This means that if it is unlocked, you can apply the same Rune to every applicable item that you own. Note however that some Runes are limited to the type of equipment (weapon, helm, chest piece), while others are limited further to a specific class of weapon.
Rune Types
Rune Grades
Common
Can be equipped on either Helm, Weapon or Armour.
Legendary
Requires 4 Rune Power
Weapon
Can only be equipped on specific Weapon types.
Epic
Requires 3 Rune Power
Helm
Can be only equipped on Helmets.
Rare
Requires 2 Rune Power
Armour
Can only be equipped on Armour (chest piece).
Uncommon
Requires 1 Rune Power
You can have up to three Runes applied to any items, but Runes are not stackable - you cannot have two of the same Rune applied to the same item. In addition, Runes are divided by grade. The higher the grade, the more ‘power’ a Run requires to be effective. Each item of equipment that can accommodate Runes has a maximum power of six.

At the end of Season VII the Rune system will no longer be accessible and the bonuses from any applied Runes will cease to be active. However, the system will be adapted and remain a feature in future seasons, likely with a new name and reassigned bonuses in keeping with the themes of that season.

It may look like there’s not much happening this month, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s more the case that we’re holding back on a few things, with June being the game’s anniversary month. The end of Season VII is also closing fast, so you can be sure we’ll be revealing plenty about Season VIII before the month is out. As always, stay tuned!

FROM JUNE 3: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Conqueror’s Blade, having officially emerged into the free-to-play world on June 3, 2019, is celebrating its birthday!. In human terms it’s a milestone at which shapes can be recognised and stairs can be climbed, so we’re doing quite well on that front. Anyway, expect a round of celebrations fit for a two-year-old. Game, that is.

FROM JUNE 12: END OF AN ERA

Season VII comes to end later this month, with the final Territory Wars of the season on June 12 bringing to a close the game’s Viking-inspired era. We’ll be revealing the season’s rewards, profiling the winners on each server, and looking ahead to the themes and features that are coming soon after.

he final stage of Season VII’s Campaign is underway, which means that, as well as regional capitals being up for grabs, the Core Capital is ripe for conquest. Of course, only those warlords that count themselves among the best of the best can hope to take the season’s ultimate prize, but for those that can manage modest gains in Territory Wars, the benefits are more than worthwhile. Access to local resources, income from taxation, denying your enemies - as well as the end-of-season rewards for taking part in all those epic battles!

It’s not too late to join the fight! Just complete the following checklist and you should be taking over fiefs in no time.

Join an active House

You don’t have to be part of a group to engage in battle, but if you want to share in the glory and income of controlling territory, being part of a formal group of players is mandatory. You can either join a Cohort, which is an NPC-controlled organisation where the AI will determine which fiefs that members of the Cohort should focus their attention, or join a Free House in which the leader chooses where to strike next.

Keep questing

Territory Wars occur bi-weekly every Tuesday and Saturday, but you don’t have to join the frontline to help the war effort. Between events, you can help out your teammates by completing Fief Quests. These missions will reward you with the materials needed to level up your settlements and keep your armies well stocked, which ultimately makes them more difficult and costly to attack for your enemies.

Practise in Matchmaking Battles

If you’ve played a Siege or Field Battle, congratulations - you are well on your way to becoming a conquering hero! When you target a fief, whether it’s a small village or a regional capital, the resulting battle is played out across maps based on those that are common to matchmaking battles, so the more battles you play outside a Territory War, the more you’ll be ready when the next one comes around. If you can join battles with friends and allies and coordinate your efforts, even better!

Territory War battles are different

Yes, the maps will be familiar, but there are some important differences between battles that are played out during a Territory War session. The most immediate is that there are no pre-placed artillery pieces on the map. You must remember to bring your own. Another important difference is that a queue exists where allies can take your place when you die in battle, and if there’s time left on the clock (assuming you win), you might be required to defend the same fief immediately afterwards.

Have a plan!
Planning for a battle should begin way ahead of Territory Wars starting. You and your team need to discuss your mix of weapon classes and units, and ensure they are in place on the open world map ahead of time. Then you should have a tactical plan of how you envisage the battle playing out. Try to stick to the plan as much as possible, and listen to the commands of the team leader in case the plan changes - which it undoubtedly will.

Communicate!

Matchmaking battles tend to play out as free-for-alls, with very little communication going on between allies unless they are already assigned to one another as friends. However, in a Territory Wars battle, accurate and timely communication is absolutely essential for any team hoping to win a fight. Using some form of real-time voice system is almost as necessary as equipping weapons and units, while a knowledge of the tactical commands available via the chat wheel (accessible via the middle mouse button) should be a basic requirement.

Conqueror's Blade - Kaeden
There are two types of units in Conqueror’s Blade. First are those you unlock through regular gameplay by spending Honour points, many of which have been in the game since closed beta. Then, there are those that have since been released as part of a themed seasonal update and that have to be unlocked by completing Seasonal Challenges.

In this round-up, we look at the units added to the game over the last two years that all warlords should assign a permanent place to in their army roster.

Landsknechts

Season V: Legacy of Fire was notable for introducing the concept of Promoted Units, which was a way of upgrading a regular unit into a seasonal one. For Season VI: Scourge of Winter, all three of the new units were Promoted units, of which the first, Landsknechts, quickly proved itself and has retained its place in many a warband since. Essentially a beefed-up unit of Spear Sergeants — a stalwart of many a young Hero’s armed forces — three-star Landsknechts are a cheap but effective fallback option for pretty much any army.

Shieldmaidens

It’s perhaps too early to decide whether this five-star unit from Season VII: Wolves of Ragnarok is an essential unit or not, as newly-introduced troops often need a full season or two to bed down and find their niche. However, as the game’s first all-female unit, and one of the most versatile in terms of attacking and defensive options, the Shieldmaidens have already managed to prove themselves and will likely achieve iconic status before too long.

Janissaries

The first unit made available as part of Season IV: Blood of the Empire, Janissaries can be seen as the game’s first and only sniper unit. With their weapons patiently braced to cut down the first enemy unit to come into range, Janissaries can often be found atop the outer wall of any Siege battle and continue to be an effective opening unit for anyone looking to set up a defence on solid higher ground. Just remember to pull them back before being overrun.

Liao’s Rangers

Liao’s Rangers benefit from being based on five-star Fire Lancers, which was already among the most popular cavalry units even before Season VI: Scourge of Winter came along to promote them. It’s not a fast unit, but its devastating medium-range weapon — the titular Fire Lance — makes it a formidable hit-and-run unit, especially if that run takes it into the heart of the enemy, all guns blazing!

Fortebraccio Pikemen

The Falconetti Gunners were the explosive new unit that arrived as part of Season III: Soldiers of Fortune, but it was the Fortebraccio Pikemen that have stood the test of time, to the point that the unit is seen by many to be among the best defensive units in the game, thanks to their strength, reach, and terrain bonuses. Position them well and you can almost guarantee that a unit of Fortebraccio Pikemen will stand its ground, but it's the fact that the unit can also be effective in attack that puts it at the vanguard of this list.

Conqueror's Blade - Kaeden
The Conqueror's Blade operations team receives lots of valuable feedback and suggestions from our players every week. Today, we want to talk about balance issues and the fact that there are currently too few units that are viable in combat.

We play the game ourselves, and as such, we share many of your sentiments. Naturally, we passed on this feedback as quickly as possible to the design team, who then took a closer look at issues prevalent in the current iteration of the game. After some observation and putting their heads together, they came up with a series of changes to remedy some of these issues.

One core issue has had widespread consequences: units that are currently underperforming haven't been able to find a role on the battlefield that fits their niche. This in turn has led to a series of issues, including the fact that only a handful of units are actually used from a wide range of available ones, and that when faced with huge armies of cavalry units, there has been no effective tactical response but to do the same. Additionally, beginners may find it difficult to meet veteran players on equal footing.

Starting in Season VII: Wolves of Ragnarok, we decided to slowly but surely make changes to the weaker units (of which there are around 50) that have outdated mechanics and unclear roles on the battlefield. This will resolve some balance issues and create a more varied and fun gameplay experience. Naturally, we’re sure you're all dying to know about the first units to receive such changes. That said, we think that you may have felt some of the changes already.

The first unit to hit the design table was the Ironcap Swordsmen. This unit felt great to use and had excellent damage-dealing potential during the game's early stages, but in time, this low-star unit lost much of its charm and enjoyment. Their role when standing against 4- and 5-star units was nothing more than avoiding the butcher's cleaver. Even if they struck upon the perfect opportunity, the outcome would end in certain death.

We wanted the Ironcap Swordsmen to find their place in any type of battle. But how would we approach this? Would it simply suffice to increase their armour penetration and damage? No, as doing so would break the balance when they’re pitted against other low-star units. Instead, we began thinking about their AoE (Area of Effect) charge. By increasing the damage capabilities of their AoE charge, we can emphasise how the soldiers cooperate with one another, a core feature of this unit. When we saw that their damage was more in line with what we expected, we continued improving them by granting them ‘Rally to Me’, a new skill that enables them to quickly return to their commanding Warlord. Players can now use them to greater effect by ordering a charge, a recall, and another charge, for a more streamlined experience.

Here’s a tip: the power of the Ironcap Swordsmen really shines if you send between three and five units of Ironcap Swordsmen out in a single charge!

Another issue in the current iteration of Conqueror’s Blade is that the combined charges of units, including the Ironcap Swordsmen, are devastating to Warlords, especially as some weapon classes have a fairly low survivability rate. But worry not, we will be resolving this issue before long!

Your enjoyment of the experiences in Conqueror’s Blade is incredibly important to us, so adjusting weak units is a long-term project we’re committed to. We will continue improving upon underpowered units in different areas, including their stats, AI, their general gameplay feel, skills, unique features, and other elements. We will also be making minor adjustments to other issues in new updates.

Got any more feedback and suggestions about units in Conqueror’s Blade? We would love to hear from you! Drop your feedback in this survey and we’ll review it for future updates. This survey will be updated every time we improve another unit, so check often back and send us more feedback if you have any. Thank you for your continued support of Conqueror's Blade, we’ll see you on the battlefield!
