Conqueror's Blade - Sapozhnik

The Northmen are preparing to assault Conqueror’s Blade when http://Season VII: Wolves of Ragnarok launches on March 18. Gathering supplies, sharpening their axes, and braiding their beards (yes, even the Shieldmaidens) - all keen to prove their worth so that in the final reckoning they might ascend to the halls of Valhalla. Among their seemingly unstoppable ranks, no unit is more thirsty for a glorious end than that of the Berserkers.

Though something of a cliche, the modern image of a berserker is largely accurate. The Old Norse word berserkr is understood to mean “bear-shirt”, which through the ages has been reinterpreted to mean bare-chested, giving us the enduring visage of the raging barbarian in furry underpants that has become such a staple of fantasy and historical fiction. Were you to fully clothe the berserker in animal skins, the wild-eyed warrior, axes akimbo, charging forward with no regard for personal safety, pretty much nails it.

The modern meaning of “berserk” (as in ‘a murderous frenzy’), alludes to the worshipping of bears (as well as wolves and boars within other clans). By wearing an animal’s skin and assuming its form and manner, the committed warrior hoped to acquire its ferocity in battle, thinking themselves immune to the wounds that might fell others. The abundance of certain types of mushroom and seeds found in Viking graves suggest that a berserker’s self-induced hysteria may well have been augmented with hallucinogenic plants. However, regardless of how they prepared for a battle, there’s no doubt that berserkers were an effective force in the midst of one.

While there’s no shortage of lightly-armoured, heavily-armed melee fighting units in Conqueror’s Blade, by introducing Berserkers we are fully embracing what has become an enduring archetype. Moreover, we can pitch the iconic Norse warriors against those from across the medieval world that they’d never had the chance to cross swords (or axes) with otherwise.

There is no subtlety to a Berserker unit. It exists for one purpose and for one purpose only: to engage an enemy directly and to tear them apart as quickly as possible so that the frenzy can begin anew. There are unit formations for the Berserker commander to consider, one to lessen the threat of incoming ranged attacks and another to brace against a foolhardy foe, but these are game formalities. Simply put, if a Berserker unit isn’t engaged in battle, it should either have been wiped out or the battle declared over. Any other scenario would be a dereliction of duty on the part of the warlord.

As well as swinging their double axes with ursine efficiency, Berserkers can deploy a devastating charge that will claw into almost any enemy, before engaging the floored foe. Having consumed large quantities of certain substances prior to battle, Berserkers are also able to enter a frenzied state for a short period of time, during which the unit will be able to increase its already savage attacks while apparently laughing in the face of death itself.

Conqueror's Blade - Sapozhnik

Season VII: Wolves of Ragnarok is coming to Conqueror’s Blade on March 18, bringing with it a tide of new units from the Northmen faction to unlock. To mark International Women’s Day, the first Season VII unit we’d like to share with you is an all-female taskforce of warriors armed to the hilt with shields, swords, and spears: Shieldmaidens.

Historians contest whether or not shieldmaidens were as prevalent in Germanic and Viking cultures as many believe. While making appearances in sagas and historical chronicles such as 'Hervarar saga ok Heidreks' and Gesta Danorum, the texts make clear that the heroics and deeds of figures like Hervor and Inghen Ruaidh defy the expectations of their gender. Nevertheless, archaeological finds like the Birka grave, a woman buried with weapons and board game pieces thought to represent strategic thinking, confirm the existence of high-ranking female warriors in Viking society.

The reputation of shieldmaidens persists in Norse mythology, in which the legendary Valkyries were said to ride into battle on behalf of the god Odin. They would choose the warriors destined to die, then escort the einherjar to Valhalla and the hall of the slain. Reaching into modern-day popular culture, the legends and inspiration behind shieldmaidens have given rise to famous characters like Eowyn, the shieldmaiden of Rohan in The Lord of the Rings, Kattegat’s formidable ruler Lagertha in Vikings, and the Marvel Comics superheroine Valkyrie.

The introduction of Shieldmaidens was an important opportunity for us to make a great unit inspired by women in Viking and Germanic societies, who often enjoyed more rights and freedom than women in many other civilisations in the same era. We wanted to introduce a unit in Season VII that portrayed female warriors as a part of a militaristic society. They would be respected and feared in the same way as their male counterparts, raiding and battling in the same vein as brutal warriors.

In Conqueror’s Blade lore, Shieldmaidens are the armed wing of the Cult of Freyja, goddess of love, fertility, sex, war, gold, and magic. In peacetime, these women serve as bodyguards in the households of highborn families, and sometimes as guardians of sacred places such as temples, groves, or stone circles. On the battlefield they are like incarnations of the valkyries, fighting with sword and spear at the side of their leader. Legend has it that when shieldmaidens sound their battle-cry, their allies will follow them into even the most desperate melee.

Shieldmaidens are unique because they’re a hybrid unit, equipped with not only shields but two different weapons. You can switch between fighting with swords and spears to your tactical advantage, with spears inflicting debuffs on enemies and benefiting from a longer reach, and swords dealing more damage at a closer range. Spear-wielding Shieldmaidens are also especially effective against cavalry units. Ensure that you switch when necessary to adapt to your current situation!

In the spirit of the iconic shield wall tactic, Shieldmaidens can encircle their commanding warlord, and move while holding formation and offering excellent protection. When using this ability with spears equipped, the unit will maintain formation and defend, whereas equipping swords will make the Shieldmaidens act more aggressively if enemies get too close.

Conqueror's Blade - Sapozhnik

After a long and bloody war and a devastating winter, the start of spring brought hope. The Scourge of Winter lay dead with his Archons, the Desecrators had been cleared out of Ostaria, and for the kingdom of Ungverija, a new era of peace and plenty seemed to be dawning.

The cost of raising armies in winter had been considerable, but with a grateful and newly-liberated neighbour to the north–ruled by a new monarch following the abdication of old King Conrad’s abdication–and the agents of the Merchant’s Guild bringing bustling trade to the streets of Turul Város, only the most mealy-mouthed pessimists would disagree that the future looked a little brighter.

However, there were signs that all was not well in the kingdom. Farmers reported an increasing number of wolf attacks on livestock, mostly in the east of the kingdom around Vajk’s Lake. A beast-like howling could be heard echoing across the water at night, and strange lights were seen flickering in the deep forests. Peasants barred their doors at sundown, village watchmen patrolled in pairs, and even the highborn kept loaded firearms at hand before settling down to restless sleep. Soon, people started to go missing too, and rumours began to circulate that something evil had crept down into the kingdom while the armies of Turul Város were liberating the North.

The guards on duty in Turul Város were met with an unexpected sight one day when a bearded barbarian warrior approached the gates. He was a man of the Northlands, clad in iron and furs, carrying a war horn, and with an honour guard at his back. As the host marched closer, the captain of the watch was surprised to see that his bodyguards were all women.

The warrior identified himself as Jarl Ulvar, a leader of the Northmen, who revealed that he was on a mission from the High Kin to kill the renegade warlord Guthrom Red-Eye. The man had fled justice in his homeland along with a band of his most devout followers, all calling themselves the Sons of Fenrir. Until such time that Guthrom and his men could be apprehended, Ulvar offered the Ungverijans the services of his army. Before anyone could ask to see this army, Ulvar slung his horn from his shoulder, blew it once, and summoned a great host of axe-toting warriors from the treeline behind him.

Meanwhile, on the banks of the Kiralyi river, Guthrom Red-Eye and his followers were finishing a final ceremony: a ritual sacrifice to the wolf-god Fenrir. The signs had been seen, the appropriate offerings made, and now the Sons of Fenrir set out for battle. Howling like a pack of hellhounds, they descended on defenceless villages and merchant caravans, burning and killing without pity.

Guthrom’s followers would begin with a shock attack, then the survivors would be offered the choice: Guthrom as your king, or be next on the altar. By this method, a small kingdom was sliced out of Ungverija which attracted every kind of brigand and bandit to the service of Jarl Guthrom…
