Conqueror's Blade - Sapozhnik

As we approach the decisive stage of Season IV, with houses and alliances preparing to assault the Conqueror’s City once more, it’s an apt time to reflect on Season III’s summer campaign. Now that the war scholars have completed their battlefield investigations, we are at last able to celebrate those that succeeded in claiming the ultimate prize, but who did so by taking the honourable path to victory!

EU East: Government in Exiles

On what is now the Steppes server (RU), it was KingdomExiles that won Season II and TROYNICHOK that eventually took the city to secure the Season III title. On the roster of both alliances, however, was a familiar executor - Exiles - a house known for being at the centre of many famous victories.

Exiles’ plan for the season was a simple one: assemble the finest heroes and take the Conqueror’s City as soon as possible in order to have the advantage of defending it. By all accounts, the plan was executed with consummate precision, with TROYNICHOK controlling not only the city but its gate fiefs as well!

Exiles is also known for enduring long periods of inactivity after its successes, which it appears to be in the midst of as we await the climax of season IV. As late as it is, however, we won’t yet be discounting Exiles from attempting a third consecutive seasonal victory.

North America: Kingdom of Heaven

There were effectively two major alliances battling for dominance on the NA server: the winners of Season II, Defiance, who became increasingly embattled with the soon-to-be champions of Season III, HeavenlyKingdom. “We were evenly matched in most respects,” said the winning liege. “We fought in every fief near the Conqueror's City in order to gain an advantage and the war became very brutal when both sides ignored the cost. They [Defiance] brought us some very challenging fights within the Conqueror's City as well.”

Preparations for Season III were laid down long before the campaign began, with the building of a coalition designed to fulfil one goal: take the Conqueror's City and successfully hold it until the end. “That’s an achievement, but our bigger achievement was our unity. We successfully united all the people to fight for a common goal because we all had the desire to win; to take the city.”

EU West: Hare apparent

Of all the houses in all the severed realms of Conqueror’s Blade, Wererabbits and their Friendly allies are perhaps the closest of all to establishing a hegemony. For Season III, the plan was simple: to secure the local region quickly to be able to start crafting for the battles ahead. “If you cannot get the correct locations for siege crafting you are automatically put at a disadvantage on everything else,” said a representative.

As for securing the Conqueror’s City, the Friendly alliance was able to swiftly take the fief from under the noses of its rivals by launching an assault just when those of other houses seemed to falter. A case of being in the right place at the right time.

“We were happy to win the Conqueror's City again, [especially] whilst having the other top alliances team up to try and stop it happening again.” Now, we wait to see if Friendly can be the first alliance to secure three seasons in a row!

EU West 2: The lost season

While battles for the capital city on the Sicania (EU2) server were just as intense and bloody as elsewhere, in the end it was chaos and ruin that emerged with the crown. Victory celebrations were cancelled as Alliance forces were unceremoniously ejected from the city by the civil authorities, requiring a coalition of legionnaires to ride in and restore order.

The city is again quiet, bracing itself for more battles and hoping for a more favourable outcome at the conclusion of Season IV: Blood of the Empire.

Congratulations to all those that fought with integrity during Season III, especially those won the keys to the Conqueror’s City. Their achievements will be forever remembered, alongside the Conquerors of Season II.

We love the fleeting thrills of a knockout tournament, but you can’t beat the drama of a week-in, week-out league. Here, not only player skill is tested, but stamina too. Both traits will be required by those registering to play in the Taverne League, where 16 teams will be selected to compete across eight weeks of siege competition. It's an opportunity to complete an epic journey alongside some of the most dedicated players of Conqueror's Blade, with Sovereigns and Premium time at stake for the winners.

Organised and hosted by La Taverne des Casus, the League’s opening matches are scheduled to commence September 24 (each played across two legs, as attackers and defenders). The competition will continue every Thursday, until the final matches take place on November 12.

Interested team captains should gather 15 players, plus up to three substitutes, and sign up via the tournament Discord channel before September 15. The league and match rules and a full schedule will also be made available here. Players looking to join under-strength squads can also pitch their skills there.

Good luck to the organisers, and everyone looking to take part. We look forward to profiling the winners in November, as well as (hopefully) previewing a second season!

Thank you to everyone who was brave enough to pen a declaration of war for our Scribe Week Writing Contest. The Sultan of Anadolou, normally expressionless when he studies his morning correspondence, was moved to comment on a number of entries. However, there was one in particular that caused him to consider abandoning his campaign for Reginopolis, when he received the following from LadyVengeance...

His Sublime Majesty,

Sultan Faith Suleyman, the Fourth of That Name, and Sovereign Ruler of the State and Territory of Anadolou,

It has been many years past since we last spoke and yet, I still remember the burning fervor we once had for each other. You were but ‘His Royal Highness,’ a prince, eager for my heart’s affections, and I, a princess, so very young and excited by your love and your ambition. It was just as enticing then as it is now, but unfortunately, we grow up.

Now time has seen to it that this ambition you had has betrayed itself upon my heart deeper than I had first considered it – and sharp, like the blade of many conquerors before, it pains me to say this but… you have broken all that we had between us, and you have gone too far.

This is my declaration of war!

Although quaint, your attempt at befalling the pride and glory of our dearest Queen of Cities, Reginopolis, was, at best amusing… It is time for you to surrender your heart to me or pay in the blood of our empires.

And even now, as you plot further devices of destruction across the land, I urge you to reconsider your next move: Take heed, whilst your head be on your shoulders, and your chest still dares to rise and fall – I pray, for your sake – that should we speak again, you are ready to say all that my ears would dare to hear.

Signed - Yours Truly,

Lady Vengeance

Well done to LadyVengeance (NA) for penning the winning English entry, and to compatriots AthosDeLaFere (EU1) and Ceremony (NA), whose words have secured their authors second and third prize respectively. The Sultan is now meeting with his exchequer to arrange the rapid transfer of Sovereigns and Premium Account time to all winners from all nations, with a view to avoiding any unnecessary military action in the future.

Janissaries were the first unit to be released during Season IV: Blood of the Empire update, and have quickly established themselves as one of the most popular ranged units in the game, due to being a necessary route to unlocking Azaps and Sipahis

Janissary units can be distinguished by their Ottoman-inspired headdresses, as well as their heavy calibre rifles that, to be at their most devastating, require the use of aiming forks.

Unlocking

You will be able to command a unit of Janissaries temporarily after completing one series of Season IV unit challenges. The unit will become permanently yours after finishing a second stage (along with any XP the unit may have earned along the way). Complete Stage 3 to secure a Doctrine that increases the unit’s rate of fire by 8%!

2x Janissary Unit Medal (50,000 Unit XP)

Janissary’s Doctrine II

Gameplay

Compared to other ranged units on the medieval battlefield, the Janissaries represent discipline and order. Without it, they might just be firing opportunistic volleys and hoping not to run into melee units. However, when deployed in a Three Rank Formation using the Prepared Volley order, they can be just as effective as higher tiered units like the Imperial Arquebusier. Be wary though, for as with Season III’s Falconetto Gunners, they can be left cruelly exposed. Protect their flanks, and they will pay back your attack with interest.

Progression

Janissaries have a maximum unit level of 16, with Veterancy Points investable across two branches, neither of which is particularly suited towards any specific role. The top branch augments the Prepared Volley order and ends with two extra soldiers, and may be preferable to maxing out the lower branch of more general bonuses.

Conqueror's Blade - Sapozhnik

Sipahis are the first mounted unit to be added to the unit roster since Kheshigs rode roughshod over Season II. However, aside from their climactic appearance late in the season, the Sipahis are very different from their nomadic forebears.

Where the Keshigs are a direct and very heavy cavalry unit, designed to break apart any infantry defence in quick order before moving onto the next target, the Sipahis are a little more focused in their assaults. They can fulfil a more general attack role, but what they excel at is directly attacking heroes and their bodyguard units. Together with the very specific damage they deal, this makes Sipahi units quite unique. You may be surprised by what they’re capable of!

Unlocking

Like all seasonal units, you must earn the right to command Sipahis. First unlock the Janissaries, then complete a series of challenges divided across four stages. You will be able to command a unit of Sipahis temporarily after completing Stage 1, which will become permanently yours after Stage 4 (along with any XP the unit may have earned along the way).

Sipahi’s Doctrine II

Gameplay

At first glance Sipahis can seem underwhelming, with unit health and speed just a little below par compared to similarl 4- and 5-star mounted units. Indeed, the unit could almost be mistaken for Dagger-axe Lancers in most respects, but that overlooks the two characteristics that help it stand apart. One is the unit’s Assassin trait, which (together with the Croupade order), puts Sipahis at an advantage when fighting heroes. The other is that Sipahi units carry large maces, which only deal blunt damage. Blunt-edge weapons tend to be less dangerous, but are highly effective in the sense that most players are set up to tank piercing and slash damage.

In short, what you get with the Sipahis is a unit of mobile assassins - more or less a counter to the previously-released Silahdars!

Progression

Sipahis have a maximum unit level of 20, with Veterancy Points investable across two branches. The top favours general health and defence, with augments to the Croupade order (anti-hero). Meanwhile, the lower branch is more focused on improving Charge and increasing damage - especially against infantry units. Plan your levelling up accordingly!

Just the facts: Sipahis (4.5-star, mounted)
