You may have seen development and progress on Skystead Ranch already in our Dev Vlogs and news posts on our Socials. Our most ambitious game project to date that has been in development for over a year!

Our first title with a 3D environment, cute creatures, building, farming and more! A more substantial game whilst remaining calming and relaxing at its heart.


Skystead Ranch is a casual, relaxing ranching game set in the skies! Take to your very own Skystead, a big magical floating island amongst the clouds, where mysterious and wonderous creatures known as Skylets live. Learn their ways and make a home for you all!



Transform a desolate sky island into a vibrant sanctuary. Using your enchanted crook, cultivate your garden, befriend quirky creatures, build a home, and unlock secrets along the way. Each choice adds a personal touch to your unique Skystead Ranch!


Skystead Ranch is still a very much work in progress. All of the imagery and game footage you see is pre-release Demo so the end result may vary.

The 17th of August marks 5 years since the launch of Coloring Pixels, and 6 years of ToastieLabs! With your help we have managed to put everything in place to make Coloring Pixels bigger and better than ever, we cannot thank all of you enough for helping us get this far! <3

It has been yet another milestone year for us here at ToastieLabs! Since the last anniversary, we have managed to make a new DLC each month Coloring Pixels even though we have added a whole new game WooLoop, with monthly DLC to our portfolio! Jack has drawn 12 new books for you over the course of 2022/2023 with even more yet to come! On top of all that, we have also released two new Coloring Pixels Collections on Nintendo Switch!

Just like last year, your support has allowed us to expand once again! We have hired the mysterious Level Designer "Icy" who helps create and test content for our games. Our small team of 3 is now a not-as-small team of 4!

To celebrate yet another huge milestone: We have added a new free bonus image to Coloring Pixels, we are hosting the 5th annual pixel art competition, and all* available ToastieLabs games and DLC on Steam will be at least 20% off all week long!

We are still a growing Games Studio as we are approaching 3 years of full-time ToastieLabs this September. We are excited about the direction of our little studio and what we have achieved in this short time with your help!

4 Huge milestones!

• New Office (since the last post) - We moved into a new, much bigger office! This place is a lot more personal to us and we have decorated it to look like a Game Studio instead of just an office with the addition of chalkboards, Televisions, and Arcade Machines!
  
• WooLoop - A whole new game that we released in January, going very strong with monthly DLC releases similar to Coloring Pixels!
  
• Icy - The Mysterious Game Designer with no name, works hard and has been a fantastic help to our increased workload.
  
• Skystead Ranch? - A not very well-kept secret, although it's not yet officially announced, we are well on the way to producing a Game Demo and getting ready to show off our biggest-ever game this October! After being in development for over a year, we can't wait to show it off to you all!

Coloring Pixels has continued to be your favourite game and that's mostly thanks to our artist Jack who has worked tirelessly to ensure you are provided with a new, handmade DLC every single month!

We want to take this moment to thank Jack for his hard work to bring you hours of enjoyment.

Skystead Ranch is the first ambitious game title that we have been "secretly" working on over the past year.

Since you allowed us to bring on Jack last year as a full-time Game artist we realised he is more useful than just making pixel art for Coloring Pixels! Together we have learned how to create 3D assets, characters and animations to be used in our first-ever big 3D game title!

Skystead Ranch is an adventure, building, farming simulator where you improve, expand and explore your very own Sky Island to discover and befriend a variety of exciting and adorable creatures we call "Skylets"!

We are doing as much as we can to ensure Skystead Ranch gets elevated and promoted onto as many people's radar as possible - as such we have invested in hosting Skystead Ranch at a couple of different conventions, the largest being MCM Comic Con!

• Social Media - Twitter was already a good place to go for interaction between us and the community but it has been exciting to see the continued growth of our Twitter, thank you!

It really makes the work we put in worth it to get instant interaction with you, from your suggestions and feedback to jokes and special server roles! A huge thank you to our moderators, helpers, and community as a whole for keeping this a safe space for everyone to hang out.
  
  
• Reddit - We have a ToastieLabs subreddit! Still small and cosy but we post regularly with updates for those of you who prefer this format.
  
  
• YouTube - We have kept the Dev Blog going all year due to your support and love of the weekly videos! Drop by to see the inside of the development process from week to week. We've just achieved over 3000 subscribers! That's a whole 1000 more of you since last year!
  
  
• Patreon - A huge thank you to everyone on our Patreon, the love and support from Patreon has grown and grown with every year it's been live - approaching 3 years of support from you means so much to us, and we cannot thank you enough <3

The 20 winners of this competition will have their pixel art featured in a free update to Coloring Pixels. It's very easy to enter; keep reading to find out all the information you need. When you're ready, click on the link at the bottom.


The deadline is the 13th of October 2023 at 17:00 UTC, the winners will be announced on the 20th of October 2023 via a blog post on our website, Steam announcement, Discord, and Twitter. Links to the socials can be found on our website!

We need to make sure that your pixel art is compatible for use in Coloring Pixels. To help improve your chances, we have come up with a few simple rules for you to follow and some suggestions to help you get started.

• You must submit an image of file type PNG. Sadly, PNG is the only image file format supported by Coloring Pixels. Other formats can easily be converted to PNG through most image editing software and online converters.
  
• The image must have a maximum dimension of 300x300 pixels. As you will have noticed, the larger images in Coloring Pixels take exponentially more time to complete. Although we know a lot of you prefer larger images, we don't want levels taking weeks to complete.
  
• Submission must have fewer than 100 different colors. The fewer colors, the better for Coloring Pixels; so try to keep to as few as possible. It isn't easy to know how many different colours there are in an image, so if you accidentally submit more than 100 colors it will be alright (we will need to pass your image through a filter). Some applications such as Aseprite let you create a color palette (which we recommend) which allows you to keep track of colors easily. If you choose an application such as paint.net we recommend sticking to the pencil tool over using paintbrush tools as they can often create numerous different shades of colors in an attempt to blend with the background.
  
• You must submit pixel art. A simple but important rule, the artwork you submit must be in the style of pixel art, resized photographs or graphical art will not be selected if no pixel art alterations have been made to the image.

• Size doesn't matter! As long as you keep within the 300x300 image dimension limit you won't be penalised for submitting a smaller image. We will be judging submissions based on aesthetics and not complexity. For example, submitting an image of size 10x20 will be judged equally to one of size 150x200.
  
• "Which software should I use?" We recommend using either Aseprite or Paint.net (free). Both are very powerful pieces of software that are more than capable of creating pixel art for this competition. That being said, you can use whichever software you want, as long as you can draw and produce a PNG file it should be good enough.
  
• "I've gone brain dead... I need inspiration!" - We can't choose for you, but you can draw anything. If you can't think of anything new or inspiring, try drawing something you love (film, game, pet fish, lasagne) or even something on your desk (Keys, a book, the framed ToastieLabs Poster you got from our merch store).
  
• "Can I submit multiple times?" Yes, don't hold back! Submit as many images as you like. We will judge each image anonymously and individually.

We managed to get our logo onto the piece multiple times. Thank you! ❤️

Now, as promised, we are looking at our options for adding a thank you image(s) to Coloring Pixels.
Initially, we planned to add a single, smaller, image to the game of the ToastieLabs logo on r/place as last year we had an outcry of players not enjoying the full r/place image in Coloring Pixels as it was simply too large for most players.

However, since our initial post, we have heard your voices for adding another full book.

Generally speaking, counting all comments both here in Discord and on Steam, it is close to 50/50 for and against a full book.

On another note, the addition will have to be a free DLC as the addition will require a different age rating to the base game.

A compromise we are thinking of is adding a small collection of images, say 4 or 5, either of people's favourite spots on the canvas or of the various logos we got onto the board (assuming we can get the images as clean PNGs) - let us know what you think as well as suggestions for areas of the canvas you'd potentially like to see in Coloring Pixels - Thank you all again!
