Hello truckers!

Our Open Playtest has now ended - meaning if you downloaded the playtest you will no longer be able to launch it.

We wanted to share our thanks to everyone who took part, streamed, gave feedback, and got involved in any way. This weekend has been incredible - seeing players get their hands on the game and begin hitting the roads in the rough and wild region of Alaska.

From a development standpoint, there is no way to overstate our useful this playtest has been for us. We are a small indie development team and while we've tested our game a lot, getting it out into the open with thousands of players has meant the game has been tested like never before.

Every bit of feedback you have sent in has been read and we're working on fixing the things that need fixing, sanding off the rough edges, and getting our game ready for release.

If you've played the playtest and wouldn't mind giving us a bit more information, we have two surveys we're asking players to fill out. Thank you in advance!

Alaskan Road Truckers - Flo
Whew! Saturday was something.
The first day of the open playtest brought us much-required feedback - and a lot of fixes. We've been fixing the game in real-time, reading and watching you on Discord and on your streams. This is becoming a tradition for us, isn't it?

Moreover, overnight we created a new build with even more fixes and improvements! So if you played at the start of our playtest, here's what has changed.

  • Batteries are available at most gas stations and not only in stores
  • Fixes to invisible bumps on some roads
  • Fix for the camera prediction resetting itself to "off"
  • Some traffic fixes (still WIP)
  • Bugs fixes in Cantwell, Paxson, and Palmer
  • Fixed the part of the road leading to Prudhoe Bay
  • More items in stores from the clerks
  • Invisible road bump fixes
  • Fix for the crash when you eat certain items from inside the truck
  • Improved gear 6 and 8 behavior
  • Some landscape fixes
  • Day-night lighting improvements
  • Additional traffic improvements
  • CB radio loan system fixes
  • Removed requirement of the engine being off when (de)coupling a trailer
  • Steering animation fix
  • Reduction of sliding on some surfaces
  • AMD GPUs graphic bug fix

We also know about many other issues that are in the works. These include:

  • Battery depleting too quickly
  • Newly bought trucks not working properly
  • Wheel turning speed is too low (ultimately we think we'll go with an option with a slider, but we'll speed it up by default first)
  • Remaining AI wonkiness
  • Steering wheel detection problems for some models (try running the game in admin mode, it often helps)
  • Force feedback being too strong (FFB options in the works!)

We might be able to include at least some of those before the playtest is over.

If you want to support us, wishlist Alaskan Road Truckers, follow us, and tell your friends about it.

Thank you all for testing with us and helping make the game better!

Alaskan Road Truckers - Theoban
Hello truckers!

There are less than three weeks to go until we launch on Steam. Three weeks! We can barely believe it. We are so excited to be able to release our game into the wild and have you all play it - we hope you’re as excited as we are.

Last week we talked about how Alaskan Road Truckers fits into the field of trucking games, this week we’re going to look at how it compares to simulation games. We’re going to answer the question - is Alaskan Road Truckers a simulation game?

What is a simulation game?

It’s surprisingly hard to pin down what makes a simulation game a simulation game. It’s an incredibly broad category of gaming, containing games as diverse as Gas Station Simulator, The Sims, and Stardew Valley. Despite allowing players to experience things in a huge variety of ways, there is one thing that unites all simulation games - they simulate an experience.

That experience can be as large as designing, building, and managing your own city or as small as living the moment-to-moment experience of a singular person doing a job. Simulation games are all about putting you into a role and giving you the tools to experience it, most often with a degree of fidelity to real life.

Sims and Alaskan Road Truckers

So the question is: where does Alaskan Road Truckers fit into the simulation genre?

Do we simulate an experience? Yes. Alaskan Road Truckers is all about putting you in the shoes (and skin) of an Alaskan trucker. You’ll live, eat, drive, and exist as a trucker, and as a result, many things are simulated. Weather, driving conditions, hunger, energy, health - they’re all in the game, and they make the game step into the simulation space. So on the surface, Alaskan Road Truckers is a simulation game.

That said, we would hesitate to brand Alaskan Road Truckers as pure simulation. We’re focusing more on recreating the feel of being an Alaskan trucker rather than recreating every minute aspect of owning a truck or running a trucking business. We want you to feel like a rugged trucker, working through storms and against the odds to deliver your cargo, we don’t want you to feel like you have a never-ending spreadsheet of tasks to complete before you get to the fun stuff. This is a game inspired by real life, it isn’t a recreation of real life.

We spoke last week about how we’re not aiming to take the crown of trucking sims, and that’s still true. We are an indie team making an indie game and our ambitions are big but still modest. We’re making the best Alaskan trucker experience ever, we aren’t making the most high-fidelity simulation game ever made.

Every aspect of our game has been designed to put you in those trucking boots, and we think you’ll be pleased with the look, sound, feel, and level of simulation we’ve put into the game.
Playtests? Playtests.

We’ve been running limited closed playtests with parts of our community, and we’ve got more planned! If you’d like to take part, the first step is to join our Discord, where you’ll find info on how to sign up:

Alaskan Road Truckers - Theoban
Hello truckers!

We’re warming up our engines ahead of the PC launch of Alaskan Road Truckers - coming October 18, 2023. We’re excited to let our game out into the wild, and we’re busy working away, making sure our vision of the game is achieved for the launch.

This week we wanted to take a moment to talk about what Alaskan Road Truckers is, where it sits in the field of simulation games, and how it compares to some of the other games out there. We hope this helps everyone understand what Alaskan Road Truckers is meant to be as a game.

Truck Sim or Survival?
You might have heard us say (and if you haven’t, where have you been?) that in Alaskan Road Truckers you play as a trucker - not a truck. That isn’t just a snappy marketing slogan, it’s core to the identity of our game and how we differentiate ourselves from other trucking games out there right now.

In other trucking simulation games, what’s simulated is the truck. Not only driving the truck, but maintenance, upkeep, refueling, and loads of other aspects of running a truck - and often running a trucking business too.

When we decided to make Alaskan Road Truckers, we decided to take it one step further. Instead of simulating only your truck, what about the person driving it? Setting the game in Alaska, one of the most varied and rugged environments on the planet, helped us in deciding to focus the game all around living as a trucker, not simply driving a truck.

From there, the gameplay concepts flow naturally. You’re a human in Alaskan Road Truckers, so you need to eat, sleep, and stay healthy. Then things like temperature begin to play a part too, you have to stay warm in the harsh winters of the frozen North. These all helped us to flesh out what Alaskan Road Truckers is - it’s not just a trucking simulation game, it’s a survival game too where you take your life in your hands every time you climb out of your cab.

It didn’t just stop there - these ideas around survival also helped us provide a deeper trucking experience. The weather will also affect your truck - too cold and it won’t start. We added hazards to the roads so you’ll either have to clear them (if you can) or take detours, which can affect not only your ability to complete your current job but also if you’re unprepared for a lengthy trip, you might run out of fuel, your truck might break down, and you might end up cold and hungry in the wilderness.

From a simple start - what about playing as a trucker, not a truck - we’ve expanded our ideas to incorporate a ton of gameplay systems that add up to what we believe is a compelling simulation of trucking life. So when you look at Alaskan Road Truckers and other games and wonder why you should check us out, remember that we’re offering something fundamentally different.

How Alaskan Road Truckers Compares
There are more trucking simulators released every year and a couple of big names that currently hold the trucking crown. It’s important to remember that we’re not aiming to take their crowns - we’re not looking to be the best trucking simulation game ever made. We’re looking to be the best trucker simulation game ever made.

Let’s look at American Truck Simulator for an example. The team at SCS created vast swathes of the USA (with more to come) and have the pre-eminent American trucking game out there. We’re offering something fundamentally different to ATS. We’ve built a smaller experience, focusing on nailing the every day feeling of being a trucker living in Alaska. As we mentioned in last week’s devlog, we’re a small team, so we’ve made our game deeper - not broader.

That’s not to say that it’s not important that we have a varied map and a satisfying driving experience - we do, and we’ve made sure that there’s plenty to see and many realistic roads to rumble over in your truck. We’ve ensured that driving your truck in-game feels like driving a truck, you’ll be spending many hours behind the wheel, so we needed to make sure that this is up to scratch. As we continue to support the game after launch we’ll also be adding more to the map and the experience, stay tuned for our post-release roadmap - coming soon!

We’ve also decided to launch on consoles, bringing our trucker experience to a wider audience who desperately need a solid trucking game on console. The biggest trucking games are still currently PC only, and we felt that console players deserve to get the same chance to live as a trucker as those on PC. We haven’t announced our console launch date just yet - but it is coming. We can’t wait to get the game in front of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players - and we hope you’ll love what we’ve got in store for you.

ALASKAN ROAD TRUCKERS ROADMAP

Many of you have been asking for a roadmap to show how we’ll continue to support Alaskan Road Truckers after launch. We’re not quite ready to share it, but we are working on one that we can’t wait to share with you.

We want to support Alaskan Road Truckers for years to come, and we want you to know what we’ve got planned. So keep your eyes peeled - there’ll be a roadmap soon!

SNOW PROBLEM
Alaska is a region of the world that has an incredibly varied climate. Most of the game we’ve shown off so far has been from the sunnier end of the year, with blue skies, green from mountain to mountain, and only a hint of snow.

Alaskan Road Truckers isn’t a game only about cruising through sunny days, you’ll have to deal with bad weather, snowstorms, and even avalanches. One of the gameplay features we’ve been making sure is working perfectly in the run-up to launch is blizzards and snow deformation - here are a few pics of how our work is going!

WHEELS AND SHIFTERS
Alaskan Road Truckers aims to recreate the experience of living as a trucker. As we always say, you play as a trucker - not a truck. While you’ll be getting out of the cab to eat, shop, refuel, and jerry-rig repairs to your truck, you’ll be spending a lot of your time driving too.

That’s why we want to make sure that you know that steering wheels and shifters will be supported in Alaskan Road Truckers from day one. So if you have the equipment, you’ll be able to use it in our game.

We’re still finalizing exactly how this support will work and will be announcing more details as we get closer to launch. We just wanted to make sure that you all know that steering wheel support is a priority for us.

RELEASING AN INDIE GAME

We’re hard at work making sure Alaskan Road Truckers is ready for launch. This means that everyone is super busy fixing bugs, rewriting text, refining gameplay features, and much - much - more.

We are a small team, so everyone pitches in with everything, and being small means we have unique challenges and opportunities. We’re incredibly ambitious with Alaskan Road Truckers, re-creating a huge slice of Alaska filled with hazards, roads, towns, and more. We had modest ambitions when we started making the game, but as we’ve worked on it, our eyes have lifted to the horizon, and we decided to expand our ideas. We’re now confident we’re making a brilliant, expansive game, and we're pretty sure you'll love it when you to play it.

This has meant our development time has been longer than we initially anticipated. As our scope grew, the game became more complex, meaning more work, bugs, and stuff to fix. Thankfully, we’re nearly there. We know you’ve all been waiting a long time for Alaskan Road Truckers - and your wait is almost over!

One of the brilliant opportunities that comes from being a small team working on an indie game is that we can take on feedback and work on what matters to you - the player. We aren’t a triple-A studio and publisher that requires tons of approvals before we start work, we can get our hands dirty nearly immediately. All this means that we’re not developing the game in isolation, we’re doing it in conjunction with you - and when we release the game on the 18th of October, your feedback will be utterly essential for us. So when the game’s out, if you encounter a bug, a problem, or have an idea - let us know!

YOUR FEEDBACK MATTERS
We can't stress enough how important your feedback has been during the beta phase. Your input has driven numerous improvements and refinements to the game, and we're committed to continuing this collaborative journey with you as we work towards the full release.

Alaskan Road Truckers - Theoban
Hello truckers!

You may or may not have heard, but we were at Gamescom last week. This meant that real people, Gamescom attendees, got to play Alaskan Road Truckers for the first time.

Not only was this an incredible experience; setting up our stand and seeing the excitement on people’s faces as they took their first steps into Alaska, it was also incredibly useful for us.

Part of what makes any game a success is the fans, so that’s why we’re asking all of you to…

Have Your Say

We want to know what you think!

If you were at Gamescom and have played the game, get in touch here, our Discord, or on our social media channels to let us know what you thought of what you played. We’ve already gathered a ton of feedback from Gamescom but we can always use more - so if you’ve played Alaskan Road Truckers, tell us your thoughts.

Our need for feedback doesn’t stop there! If you haven’t played Alaskan Road Truckers, we also want to hear from you. From everything you’ve seen, what are your hopes for the game? What are your concerns?

We’re always watching the community talk and sending this feedback to our development team but now, as we approach the launch of the PC version on October 18 - feedback is critical. So please, let us know what you think and want to see in our game. We can’t wait to hear from you.

Next Steps

Now Gamescom is over and we’ve announced our PC Steam release date, we’re hard at work implementing bug fixes, tightening things up, and working on areas of feedback we received.

We’re also working to get key bits of information out to you all. Details like system requirements, localization options, and console/other store release dates are all being finalized at the moment. As soon as we have any of this information - we’ll let you know.

Thrustmaster T128 Giveaway Winner

Last week over Gamescom we ran a giveaway in conjunction with our friends over at Thrustmaster to give away a Thrustmaster T128 steering wheel. The winner has now been drawn and we’ve been in touch so check your emails!

We’ll be holding more giveaways in the future so if you missed out this time, check back in regularly here and on our social channels to keep up to date.

Alaskan Road Truckers - Theoban
Hello truckers!

It’s currently summer here in the Northern Hemisphere and things are getting very hot indeed, especially for those of us who are at Gamescom in Cologne. We thought for this week’s devlog we’d cool down a bit and take a look at some of the effects cold weather will have on you, your truck, and the world in Alaskan Road Truckers.

Come and chill with us!

Ice to See You

Alaska is a region of the world that harbors wildly varying weather. In some seasons you may have little more to deal with than the occasional patter of rain but when winter rolls around, you’ll find things a little trickier out there on the road.

Snow and ice can make completing even routine journeys difficult. When ice starts to appear you’ll find your traction difficult to maintain, especially when you’re trying to haul a heavy load up a hill. Thankfully throwing iron (using snow chains) can provide you with the grip you need to get through.

With deep snow to contend with and reduced visibility due to blizzards, it can get extremely hairy when you're trying to navigate Alaska and control several tons of diesel-powered metal.

Engines can be temperamental things. When the frost really starts biting you may have trouble starting your truck at all. Make sure you’ve got your radiator cover with you if you’re planning on stopping anywhere to give your engine a little cozy hug to ensure it starts up.

The effects of cold don’t just stop there. If the temperature drops too much you’ll find your windscreen wipers frozen solid, unable to clear any potential blizzards that might be hitting you. The only option you’ll have is to get out of your truck and try and scrape them clean - but are you prepared to head outside in the frozen north?

A Frosty Reception

In Alaskan Road Truckers you play as a trucker, not as a truck. This means that the effects of the climate will affect you as well as your vehicle. You’ll have to maintain your temperature to keep your health up, let that drop too much and you’ll have a trip to the emergency room in your future.

You can stay warm in a variety of ways. First off you’ll have your heater in your cab - keep that running when it’s cold and you’ll keep the worst of the frost from biting you. Dressing appropriately for the weather is also something you’ll have to take into account, put a sweater on to stay warm.

If you have to get out of your cab and enter the cold you’ll have to be extremely aware of the dangers that frosty weather can inflict on you. Keep your journeys outside of safety quick and return to your truck whenever you can to stave off the cold. Your truck isn’t just your home away from home - it’s your sanctuary, where you can get a hot meal, turn on a heater, and get some precious hours of shut-eye.

Of course, knowing all this won’t help you if you’re not prepared for the worst that Alaska’s climate can throw at you. If you get trapped by an avalanche, your battery dies, a tire bursts, and you’re miles away from civilization, it can start to get very dark and very cold very fast.

If you’re heading out in winter, make sure you have what you need to jury-rig some repairs on your truck and stock up on food to make sure you come back in one piece. We’re counting on you, trucker.
