If you haven't played Super Animal Royale (and I suspect you probably haven't) you can now, for free, as much as you want. The woodland battle royale featuring cuddly (yet deadly) animals now has a demo, and you can play the demo for as long as you like, for free. You'll even unlock new items as you play—you just can't use those items unless you upgrade to the full version, which costs $13/£10.29.
I had a great time with Super Animal Royale when it released into Early Access on Steam in December. It celebrated its arrival with a free weekend, but the demo means that even if you missed that window of opportunity you can still give it a go before you buy. Playercount is currently less than massive, but the game populates empty slots with bots so you'll always have a full match. Obviously, it'd be better with 100% human-controlled animals, but it's still fun even if some of the combatants are AI.
I know there are lots of battle royale games competing for your attention, but I really enjoyed Super Animal Royale and it's definitely worth giving it a spot in your overstuffed Steam library. There are now over 60 animal breeds to unlock, more than 200 cosmetic items to earn, and you can play solo or in duos with a squad mode planned for the future.
If you've been looking for a sweet and cuddly take on battle royale, your whiskers may be twitching this morning. That's because Super Animal Royale just entered Steam Early Access. It's battle royale with adorable animals as its competitors, such as foxes, tigers, bears, and rabbits. It's still perfectly violent, mind you: these woodland creatures are packing some serious heat. It's also free to play for the next three days on Steam, and having played several rounds this morning I highly recommend trying it out.
In Super Animal Royale you're carried by an enormous duck across the map, then descend using an open umbrella as your parachute. So cute. There are deadly weapons of all kinds to scavenge, including pistols, rifles, shotguns, miniguns, and grenades, plus some cute variants, like a banana you can throw that leaves a peel on the ground for enemies to slip on. There's a vehicle, too, in the form of a giant hamster ball. I hopped in one and got my very first kill by running someone over in it.
Rather than supply airdrops, crates are periodically delivered by an adorable bespectacled mole who pops out of the ground. In other words, it's a darn cute game and I've been having fun with it. Matches take under 10 minutes if you survive to the end—I've placed second but I've yet to claim a fuzzy victory. Solos and duos are available, and squad play will come along at some point in Early Access.
As you play you receive new cosmetics and animal DNA you can eventually combine in your lab to unlock new furry characters. There aren't a heck of a lot of players in Super Animal Royale at the moment, but as the game is about to begin the lobby gets populated by bots so your match will always have plenty of targets. And as for actual players, when you're not killing each other, they can be your dance partners.
It's cute when animals act like people. Like when a dog stands on its hind legs or a cat watches TV or a monkey wears a hat or a sloth picks up a sniper rifle and shoots a panda through the head. Animals, they're just like us! In Super Animal Royale, which comes to Steam Early Access in October, they're definitely just like us, fighting to the death until only one remains.
It's both cute as heck and brutal as hell, as you can see in the trailer above. On the cute side, there's even a hamster ball you can use as a rolling weapon in the 64-player top-down skirmishes. Adorable! And if the idea of woodland animals murdering each other seems distasteful, watch a nature documentary sometime. Animals are pretty awful to one another in general.
Super Animal Royale is currently in closed alpha. If you're looking for access, visit the official site for instructions. In the meantime, have a gander at some screens below.
