Hello! Today we are updating the beta with descriptions and bug fixes, changes and features.

A little over a week has passed since the launch of the open beta-branch for testing new features that we are planning to release. We are very grateful to you for your activity, understanding and honest feedback.

In today's update, according to your feedback, we added:

New features:
  • At your request, we have added a window with Iratus Statistics, which displays his level, Spellpower, the amount of Wrath at the battle start and Mana restored, global buffs. The window located in the Artifacts tab.



  • Many unnecessary artifacts accumulate in your inventory as you progress, so now you are able to transmute from one to three artifacts into Iratus experience. The amount of experience gained depends on the power of the item.



  • Transmutation changes: now the desired part can be made from ANY two parts. You will get only common quality at the start but as you increase Iratus Level and use parts of better quality, you'll increase the chance to make uncommon quality or higher.



  • Added the possibility to dismiss needless minions to free up slots in the Chamber.



  • Added the descriptions of the enemies' abilities in the Humonarium.

Balance:
  • Changed minion upgrades: adjusted the number of available characteristics, cost, and upgrade steps.
  • Now Iratus gains 1 point of Spellpower with each level-up. Because of this, the associated bonuses of artifacts, items, and minions have changed, and the talents scaling of Spellpower has been updated.
  • Enemies are rebalanced at difficulty levels «More Pain!» and higher
  • Two minion items have been changed:
    1. Base item «Witchskin Sash»:
         - Then: Increases critical strike by 5% and reduces the received critical damage by 5%
         - Now: Increases Spellpower by 3.
    2. Item «Bane Aura»:
         - Then: Increases damage to elite enemies by 20% and reduces damage taken by elite enemies by 20%
         - Now: Increases Spellpower by 5.
  • Changed Alchemy talents:
    1. The effect of the talents «Veteran Doctorate» and «Experimental Calcination» increased from 50% to 100%
    2. The talent «Necromancery Power» reworked:
         - Then: Increases Distillation effect by 100%
         - Now: After using Distillation, all minions receive a buff for 1 battle, increasing the damage dealt and reducing the damage received.
    3. The talent «Calcination Mastery» reworked:
         - Then: Increases Calcination effect by 100%
         - Now: After using Calcination, Iratus gains +15 Spellpower for 1 battle

Bugfixes:
  • Shade's «Dark Gate» actually is: "Iratus recovers 6 Mana. Iratus gains +6 Spellpower for 1 turn.
  • Bride of Iratus's «Worship Him» actually is "The Bride gains +6 Attack and +6 Dread until the battle ends. Iratus gains +4 Spellpower for 2 turns."
  • Black Widow's «Poisoned web» description fixed
  • Talent «Infectious Lunacy» actually lasts 1 round
  • Mortuary restores minions correct amount of Vigor on difficulties «More pain!» and higher
  • After killing a boss the animations speed up no more
  • Dark Knight's «No tomorrow» now work correctly with minion items «Crow Paw» and «Ashes of the Burned Witch»
  • Artifact «Gambling Chip» now works correctly
  • Mummy item «Cursed Bandages» now works correctly
  • Collecting bones for Bone Golem unlock is now counting correctly
  • Fixed other minor bugs

Today is the day, that you can try the new features by yourself — the day that open beta testing begins! We're preparing a bunch of new mechanics for our release (which is planned for the second quarter of 2020), and want to give you the opportunity to test it.

New features:
  • Minion Upgrading system with stat points
  • Not-common parts grant stat points instead of random bonuses
  • Distillation instead of improving the rarity of the parts restores the Vigor of all minions for parts and/or minion items
  • New minion items, including unique items for each type of minion

Welcome again! Here is the second part of our Devblog! Here we will talk about other innovations that will complement and balance the changes listed in the first part.

Minion Items

After the previous Devblog, we got a lot of questions about balancing the unpredictability of the game. We answer you:
We consider it very important to provide players a comfortable tool for customizing your minions. However, we don’t want to completely remove the element of randomness from the game. The replayability and variability of the walkthroughs are one of the core points of the game, and we’ll continue to work to improve these elements of the gameplay.

Consequently, we have added more than 50 new minion items, significantly affecting the possibilities of a game session. We want each item to influence a specific run, and the need to choose items depending on a situation encourages players to make wise and considered decision.



Moreover, to further diversify playthroughs, we have added unique items for each type of minion.



The way you get items didn’t change. Ten basic items can still be made in Alchemy and the player can receive more powerful items as a reward for victory in battle or from map events.


Artifacts
By the end of the third floor, players tend to accumulate a significant number of artifacts that they don’t end up using — in the near future we will introduce the ability to process them into Iratus experience.

Talents
New mechanics — Spellpower. Affects spells Iratus uses in battle: increases damage, reduces cost, enhances effects. Thus, the participation of the necromancer in battle will be even more noticeable with several new strategies based on the Spellpower!



The talents tree has been reworked: we tried to make unpopular spells more useful, and also added new ones that affect Spell Power and enhance the effects of Distillation and Calcination.



Game difficulty dynamics
We considered it necessary to more clearly draw the line between levels of difficulty and make them more honest with the player.
With each difficulty level we plan to make the game harder by increasing the complexity of the economy, changed cemetery building effects and Spellpower, tricky enemy battle formations and new boss abilities rather than an increase in enemy stats as it is done now.


Checkpoints
For players who wish the game to be less stressful, on the difficulty levels “Cakewalk” and “More Pain!” we will add checkpoints at the beginning of the floor as an option, so your progress is more secure while you concentrate on learning the game at your own pace. This function can be used at the player’s own choice: when creating a new game, you can select this modifier, and if you lose, you will be able to return to the first battle on the floor and with the experience of past mistakes lead your army to victory.



Critical hits
We received a lot of negative feedback about enemy critical hits, breaking tactical compositions with their unpredictability. Of course, the gameplay should not be absolutely deterministic, but at the same time, the player should be able to build a reliable strategy and not depend on luck so much.
Consequently, Blocks and Wards now prevent critical hits. No more sacrifices to the RNG — now everything is under your control, as you requested. Finally, it will be possible to prevent the deadly attacks of the Scout and no longer be afraid of unpredictable losses in your favorite squad.


Cemetery
Many players complained about the useless waste of minions and resources and the tediously large amount of routine clicks for managing the Cemetery.
Therefore, we decided to “kill two Hunkies with one stone”: now, when constructing the building, as before, the Architects' Souls are spent and the minion is put into the building forever and “works” there.



Humonarium
All this time, the Humonarius has been more of a collection item than a functional source of information. Now, when all the enemy abilities are ready and approved, we’ll add their descriptions to the Humonarius, thus making it quite useful for any shrewd tactician! We know you were waiting for this :)




Other
  • Maps have become more diverse and similar paths will no longer be generated.
  • Because of the item rework, the reward system was redesigned: the effects of bonuses will now be more clear and rewards will be more variable depending on the difficulty of the battle.
  • We will be adding an interface that displays improvements and bonuses from talents, artifacts, events on the map and cemetery, etc.

Hello, necromancers!

Iratus: Lord of the Dead has been in early access on Steam for over half a year. During this time, we have received a huge amount of feedback from our players. Thanks to all who shared their suggestions for improving the game, Iratus is getting better and better because of you!

In this dev blog we will start sharing our near-term plans and upcoming features.

The release, Pre-Patch and open beta testing.

As we said, we are planning to release the full version in the second quarter of 2020.
Now we have a large number of new functions and mechanics, so we decide to release Pre-Patch, which includes most of the planned changes (but NOT new content – that will be just in the full version of the game). There are a lot of new features, so we decided to switch to a new patch in two stages:

1. At the first stage, it will be an open beta test of all new mechanics. Anyone will be able to join the beta branch on Steam with the newest version of the game. Beta testing will begin in February — the exact date will be announced later. Instructions will be published on our Discord server (you can join it now):



2. After the beta testing will be over, a game update will be released for all our players.
Important: saves from old versions will not be compatible with the new version due to significant changes in mechanics. We’ll notify players about this beforehand. The patch date will be announced later.

So, what new mechanics are we introducing?

Iratus and minion experience

Gaining experience for Iratus and his minions will be much more flexible and intuitive.
How much experience is gained from the effect of an artifact or event will depend on the current level of Iratus and his minions, and even the level of the minion from the Grave will correlate with the level of the current squad. As you progress along the map, you will gain more experience from victories and find more powerful artifacts and minion items in Coffins, Chests and on Sacrificial Altar.

Minion Upgrading

The most significant new feature is a much more convenient system for upgrading minion characteristics. Many players don’t like the current part system:

  • Random drop — the player is forced to roll the necessary bonuses. Some amount of randomness is certainly needed, but we want to give you the opportunity to more comfortably customize your minions without RNG influence.
  • Part creation requires a lot of routine actions and a lot of clicks.
  • Upgrading-with-parts system is not intuitive and too complicated for new players.
  • The most popular strategy was to cumulate low-rarity parts until the moment when you can make a Legendary part from them. In our opinion, it will be much more pleasant for players to immediately receive any obvious increases to the minion characteristics, without the need to store resources.

We decided to give players a simple tool for configuring minion characteristics:

  • As in the current version, minions will receive a different amount of experience for a victory, regardless of their actions in the battle.



  • The maximum level of minions will not be limited. And the higher the level, the more experience points will be required to get the next one. A soft cap rather than a hard cap.
  • Each time the minion levels up, the minions will receive Stat points. For Stat points, the player will be able to upgrade the available parameters of the minion of his choice.



  • The current skill upgrade system will stay: for every three levels, the minion will receive a Skill Points (of course, we will change the upgrade bonuses for balance sake).



  • Parts with quality higher than Common will no longer give random bonuses, but Stat points, which player will be able to custom configure in a user-friendly interface. We will remove the random and economically unprofitable ability to increase the rarity of parts in Alchemy: now you can gain them after the battle, as a reward for an event or on the Sacrificial Altar.

So in the new version, minions upgrading will be more convenient and smooth. You can customize the characteristics of minions according to your chosen strategy and playstyle.

Alchemy
Distillation instead of improving the rarity of the parts will provide an ability to restore the Vigor of all minions for parts and/or minion items — often an opportunity to refresh a squad after a hard battle can make a difference.
In Calcination, the amount of restored mana will no longer depend on the rarity of the parts used; and needless minion items can be converted here too.
All types of Alchemy will be available from the start — fewer bounds more freedom!

-Smoke Bomb:
Curses targets for 3 turns, dealing 60% stress damage each turn and lose 5 Luck, Accuracy and Evasion.
-Fiery Explosive:
Sets targets on fire for 3 turns, dealing 90% magic damage per turn.


Ghoul
-Just a Bite and all its upgrades were reworked:
Then:
Attacks target ally, dealing 100% physical damage.
Now:
Attacks target ally, dealing 28-32 physical damage.

-Repelling Mark and all its upgrades were reworked:
Then:
Enemies less / more often attacks the selected minion.
Now:
Selected minion gains bonus Attack, Dread, Luck and Evasion for the several turns.


Blood Phantasm
Mark of Retribution and all its upgrades were reworked:
Then:
Any enemy that damages the marked minion takes 15-25 / 20-30 magic damage.
Now:
Any enemy that damages the marked minion takes 100% / 140% magic damage.

Lich
Reanimate and all its upgrades were reworked:

Summons a Skeleton.
In one improvement the summoned minion gains 12 Attacks and Dread until the battle ends, in another - the cost is reduced.

  • Stream of Delusion, Panic Wave: Damage increased from 40% to 60%. Enemy Initiative Bonus increased from 1 to 2
  • Panic Wave: Enemy chance to escape increased from 5% to 10%
  • Psychotic Stream: Damage increased from 60% to 75%
  • Lucrative Boon: Damage reducing reduced from 20% to 10%

Bride of Iratus
  • Get Away From Him!: Enemy chance to escape increased from 10% to 15%
  • Think of Him, Worship Him: Attack and Dread Bonus increased from 4 to 6

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Unfrozen_Jaina
Hello, necromancers! We have already come close to finalizing the release version, but for now, we are happy to gladden you with the new content.

Next week, on December 5, a new version will be released, which features the new minion, Black Widow, new artifacts and new drop system, significant balance changes and reworked quests.



The power of the artifacts you receiving will grow with the Iratus progress. Events on your map path will no longer frighten you  — now it will be a more universal and interesting experience.

On Thursday you will be able to meet the new Iratus minion, — the giant arachnida, Black Widow.
"Why do we only reanimate human bodies?" "Would a lion or wolf not be more destructive?” Those were questions Iratus would often hear back in the day when he still took on apprentices. He had to stop the practice after "accidentally" killing his fourth or fifth inquisitive student.
After all, the answer is rather obvious: Animals are unable to contain a Curse, the most basic component for reanimation. There may be only a single exception…the Curse of Malice. While still needing a human base (ideally a wife who has killed her husband), it can spread to animate animal parts as if they were part of the original body.
And for Iratus, that works perfectly, considering the circumstances he is in—he has access to plenty of giant spider nests in the tunnels and a healthy supply of female inmates… The moniker of Black Widow came naturally for these wretched minions.
These giant spiders weaken and poison enemies with the deadly toxins draining life every minute, tangle them with their sticky nets, and in case of danger quickly hide in a cocoon and wait for the right moment to deliver a crushing blow.



Aaaaand tomorrow we will add Steam cards and badges! All collectors finally will have a chance to catch all the minions cards and craft Steam badge and all related bonus items. Good luck!

Three days... On 11 November midnight (to 11/12) the Halloween event will turn into a pumpkin.
And the possibility to get thematic skins will disappear until next spooktober at least.
Hurry up, if you didn't find all the pumpkins you wanted yet!

From now on and for two upcoming Halloween weeks you can participate in the pumpkin hunt for ingame rewards!



Here is an instruction for the event:
  • Update the game and play the Iratus: Lord of the Dead.
  • Find and click hidden (and obvious too) pumpkins over game screens (hint: you’ll need to pass through all three available levels).
  • For every 5 pumpkins you’ll receive skin for the minion and for all 35 pumpkins — trophy for the room.
These rewards will remain in your possession permanently!
