With the full launch of Rogue Heroes just one day away we thought we'd put together a little 'Heroes' Handbook' to help you prepare for your first steps into the dungeons of Tasos.
The Titans and their minions are fearsome, but with the mighty combination of both knowledge and a strong sword arm you'll be ready to push back the forces of darkness!
A Heroes' Handbook - Your First Dungeon!
The dungeons of Tasos are dangerous places indeed, filled to the brim with monstrous beasts and creatures of the shadow. Those that survive the claws and teeth of the Titan's minions will also have to dodge pitfall, arrow and drop traps, making it feel like even the dungeons themselves want to stop you in your path.
This brings us to our first tip...
Settle into your cape!
When you first arrive in Tasos you'll be the 'Hero' class, an all rounder who can charge forward, swinging their sword and deflecting attacks with their shield.
Whilst this playstyle seems simple enough, those that take a moment to familiarise themselves with it with reap the rewards in combat.
Luckily for you the area surrounding Intori Village is littered with Slimes. Low level enemies that shouldn't give you too much issue at the start of your quest, just watch out for the Orange Slimes!
Hero Note: Whilst these slimes are small and not too dangerous, watch out for their larger cousins that lurk in dungeons...
After getting to grips with your weapons and stamina usage, it'll be worth seeking out a larger foe to test your blocking skills and fighting tougher opponents.
That's where the 'Grazer' comes in.
Fluffy on the outside, incredibly grumpy on the inside this beast has beef with you!
Taking down a few of these will not only give you some useful crafting materials, but will prepare you for battles where enemies don't go down in a mere one or two swipes of your weapon.
Your first dungeon!
So you've found yourself at the entrance to the first dungeon, Terakar Keep!
Do you think they like visitors here?
Dungeons are the biggest challenges you'll face in Rogue Heroes, with successful completion progressing the story. But due to the Titan's influence, clearing a dungeon is easier said than done...
Terakar Keep is a labyrinth of monster filled rooms spanning three separate floors plus a boss room. For your first venture here you'll be missing certain weapons, tools and items that will make future runs slightly easier.
To help remedy this, new heroes should try the following:
1. Try to mitigate damage. The only way you'll be able to heal on your first run is by finding health pick-ups from smashing pots, opening chests and defeating enemies. Taking needless damage by rushing in can quickly put you in a bad situation as you delve deeper into the dungeon with less and less HP.
To remedy this we recommended probing new enemies you haven't seen before. Bait there attacks, be cautious and when you see and opening make your move!
2. Look everywhere and smash those pots! Gems, healing and upgrades can be hidden anywhere. From hidden doors to levers and puzzles - heroes that explore will be rewarded with both wealth and vitality.
3. Always be on guard! As the above image shows, what may be seen as a reward can quickly turn out to be a trap instead.
4. If you're playing in a group, work together. It sounds self explanatory but if you all rush into enemies at once who can do area-of-effect attacks you'll all be taking a large hit to HP... and there's only so much healing to go around...
5. Death is not the end. Grow stronger from your mistakes!
This, new Heroes, is probably the most important lesson we can give you before you dive into Terakar Keep.
Death in a dungeon is not failure. These are the greatest challenges in the game and if we're honest, it's expected that you won't be successful on your first few runs.
Upon death in single-player, or a party wipe in multiplayer you'll be met with the following screen:
This is a great opportunity to see how successful your run was, and most importantly be resurrected by the Goddesses - At which point you'll find yourself in Intori Village once more.
After getting back on your feet and dusting yourself down you'll notice that you kept all the Gems you earned from your dungeon run. Spend these as soon as possible!
To do this you'll want to go and speak to Griff in his workshop.
Hi Griff!
From there you'll be able to select from a range of buildings that will allow you to upgrade various aspects of your Hero, such as health, stamina, weapon damage and more! You can even unlock new classes and craft new weapons with the right building so choose wisely and use your first batch of gems to strengthen a weakness you've identified... Or just to hit even harder because sometimes brute force is the answer!
Go forth and save Tasos!
That wraps up our brief guide on preparing for your first dungeon in Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos.
There is much more to discover as you fight against the Titans and their minions, but we know that the lands of Tasos will be in safe hands with you around.
P.S. If you see one of these...
Then maybe give the Grappling Hook a try...
Launch Day AMA!
To celebrate the launch of Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos we'll be hosting a launch day AMA with our friends over on the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit.
If you've got any questions about the game, or well anything at all, it'll be awesome to have you stop by and say hi to the Dev Team! (Did you know there's only two of them!)
This week we're going to look at a passive mechanic in Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos that gently alters the difficulty of the game in a thematic and lore friendly way - the time of day and the weather!
So brave Heroes, read on so you don't find yourself caught off-guard, or find out how to give yourself a challenge fit for the brave and the foolhardy that will bring you extra spoils and loot...
The things that go bump in the night...
Rogue Heroes doesn't have static difficulty settings, instead putting you into a world that gives you a fair and fun experience with a healthy bit of challenge sprinkled on! Even if you fall you'll always come back stronger, the forces of evil cannot be allowed to prevail after all.
But then the Titans have a few tricks up their shadowy sleeves to stop you and your friends in your tracks, with one such devious play being 'Elites'.
Elite Enemies
Elite enemies are versions of monsters that are stronger and tankier than their brethren, meaning they'll both take more damage to defeat and dish more out if they hit you.
Luckily, through your natural heroic intuition you'll be able to spot elite enemies via the rather foreboding skull above their head.
This type of enemy has a base spawn chance of 5% when exploring dungeons when the weather is sunny and clear. That means that whilst there's a good chance you'll encounter these more powerful creatures on your dungeon runs, there won't be too many to fight through and whittle down your precious HP and supplies.
But this isn't always the case, for in certain conditions the Titan's minions will feel emboldened and empowered, increasing the spawn rates of elites.
These two conditions are night time and stormy weather, which both occur naturally as you roam about the lands of Tasos. These can occur separately from each other, or at the same time and their effects will stack. After all, what creatures of the night don't also enjoy a good storm!
Both of these effects add a 5% increased chance that an elite enemy will spawn in the place of a standard one, meaning that if it's both night and stormy weather then there's a notable 15% chance of any enemy being an elite.
Whilst this might not be too scary in rooms with less enemies, those with swarms of them or particularly powerful ones can quickly escalate the situation.
But With Risk, Comes Reward
Fear not though, for whether you come up against elite beasts intentionally or unintentionally, taking them down has its rewards!
Elite enemies drop significantly more Gems and crafting materials than their normal counterparts, meaning more challenging fights will allow you to level-up your Hero more swiftly, as well as rebuild Intori Village sooner.
To show this we sent one of our more experienced Heroes who's dealt with elites before out into a dungeon to show this in action...
Standard Skull Spear
Elite Skull Spear
Inviting a Challenge
If you have no fear and want to seek out the strongest of the Titan's minions there is a way to manipulate both the weather and time of day. For those who seek such power, they will find it in the form of powerful spells!
These spells can be found on runes that rest of shrines scattered throughout Tasos. Upon finding them and claiming the power that resides within them you can choose to manipulate both time and weather itself to invite a more challenging world state.
On the flip side you can also choose to return the weather to clear and the time of day to sunny, limiting the extent that elites will roam the dungeons - the choice is yours!
Try the Demo!
With a little over a week to go until the gates to Tasos fully open there's still time to try out our free Steam demo:
It's time well spent as not only will you get to start your adventure early, but you'll be able to carry your save data over to the full game when we launch on February 23rd!
Please note: The launch version of Rogue Heroes supports full online multiplayer. The demo only features the local multiplayer version.
You can also be extra heroic and support us ahead of launch by giving us a Wishlist - Thank you!!
This week we're delving into how progression works in Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos!
We'll be doing this by breaking down our levelling system into a few key areas, as well as sharing some useful information that should help you on your adventures!
Levelling up your Hero!
In Rogue Heroes your main path to progression isn't from gaining EXP by fighting monsters and completing quests. Instead, it comes from gathering Gems and choosing how to invest them!
Gems are earned inside the various dungeons around Tasos by defeating enemies, opening treasure chests, completing puzzles and given when successfully taking down a boss. (Don't worry if you get KO'd though, you'll still have your loot to spend once you're resurrected. The Goddesses are nice like that.)
This valuable currency can be invested in a number of ways without much restriction, meaning you can grow and strengthen your Hero in a way that best suits your playstyle or party composition. You'll do this by spending your Gems with the various residents of Intori Village who each provide a specialised service from strengthening your weapons, improving your HP, Mana and Stamina, unlocking new classes and more.
However, when you first arrive in Intori Village it's in a bit of a sorry state, ravaged by the Titan's evil that grips Tasos you'll need to begin rebuilding the village, help the locals with side-quests and in some cases even save them to gain access to their progression specialism...
Building yourself up!
Villagers need a home before they can assist you in levelling up and improving your heroic potential.
To do this you'll need to spend some Gems with Griff in his workshop. When speaking to Griff you'll see a list of available buildings you can add to the village. We suggest taking a moment to read through them so you can make an informed decision on what you'll want to build first to access the progression trees you desire.
Here's an example of what that looks like as we decide to get ourselves the ability to unlock new classes as soon as possible:
Fun Fact: In multiplayer you can split the cost of buildings with your friends!
Once built we can then go and say hello to the talented seamstress Margaret, who for a modest cost will weave you new magical class cloaks... assuming you've found the right threads she needs!
The good news is once you've unlocked a new class you can switch between any of them freely via the wardrobe in your house:
In single-player your house is both upgradable and can be customised to make a home fit for a Rogue Hero
Forging and upgrading!
Once Griff has constructed the required building, in this case Nik's Lab, you'll open up a selection of new weapons/tools to craft, including bows, bombs and wands!
In order to make these though you'll need to have certain materials that drop from the monsters you'll find in both the overworld and dungeons:
Having acquired a shiny new piece of equipment you'll probably want to upgrade it. That's where another building, Rick's Tool Shed, comes in.
Check out the range of upgrades you can invest your Gems in which includes damage, capacity and more! There's a lot to choose from:
The keen eyed Heroes among us will notice that the sword can't be upgraded at Rick's Tool Shed. For that you'll need a Blacksmith, whom you'll meet once you've built the 'Lost Iron Forge' building.
The use of Gems to upgrade your Hero goes beyond your weapons and tools too! If you want to increase your HP to be more tanky or invigorate your mana to maximise spellcasting you'll need to invest in those areas too, after all what use is a strong sword if you don't survive long enough to use it!
Expanding your spell list!
Not everything can be unlocked with Gems though. Heroes who wish to fully harness the power of magic will soon discover that the arcane knowledge needed to harness the elements can't simply be purchased, it must be discovered!
Throughout the overworld of Tasos there are various shrines that house powerful runes! Once recovered each one will unlock a new spell to use, ranging from powerful elemental attacks to game altering global spells which we'll explain more about in next week's Heroes' Hall...
What do we have here...
I have the power!!!!
Your Hero, your progression
That wraps up this week's Heroes' Hall!
We're really pleased to give you a system where you can level-up and strengthen your Hero in a way that gives control to you, the player! Whether you're min-maxing or roleplaying we hope you find progression in Rogue Heroes meaningful, flexible and fun!
If you liked what you read and haven't tried Rogue Heroes yet, there's a free Steam demo you can play here:
This week we're taking a look into the nine different Hero Classes in Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos!
Those of you that have been in the community for some time will remember the first ever Heroes' Hall from back in October 2019. That post detailed the then seven total classes in the game and gave you a general idea of what it was like to play them.
Since over a year has passed since then we thought it'd be a cool idea to highlight the different Hero classes again and tell you about the two new classes!
A Heroes' Arsenal
No matter what class you play as in Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos you'll be able to use every weapon and item in the game with them. From your trusty sword, which is standard issue for every Hero, to the more specialised weapons such as bows, wands, boomerangs and bombs, nothing is off limits as you seek to free Tasos from the clutches of evil.
Some of you may now be asking, "Well if that's the case, what do the different classes do?". The answers to that are below:
Unique Strength, Defence and Mobility distribution.
A unique active ability that enhances the class' playstyle.
Some classes have a unique passive.
A cool outfit to stand out amongst other classes!
Now, lets look at those classes!
The Hero Types of Tasos!
Hero
The Hero is the first class you'll play as, adopting a balanced and all-round playstyle which is great for starting your adventure!
Their unique ability is a sword charge that propels you at great speed through enemies and objects alike.
Knight
The Knight is the finest tank in all of Tasos! Taking reduced damage from incoming attacks, combined with an extended reach on their sword, Knights are a great choice for those who want to dive into combat sword first!
But, such strength and durability comes with a price. Knights move slower than other classes and tire quickly from repeatedly swinging their larger swords.
We recommend keeping Knights as your frontline defence when playing in a party. Make sure to utilise the Knight's leap ability too, this allows you to quickly close gaps on groups of enemies or reposition to assist your squishier friends!
Mage
The Mage focuses on fighting their enemies at range with a variety of spells with differing effects!
Wielding both a Wand and a Sword they can set enemies alight, freeze them in place or hit them with a powerful magic missile.
There are also two other spells with wide reaching and game altering effects, but we'll talk about those next week...
Thief
The Thief is best described as a glass-cannon style class. They move quickly and deal heavy melee damage, but lack the ability to take much punishment themselves.
That's where their unique ability 'Fade' comes in. When activated you'll become invisible to all enemies allowing you to sneak up and engage them with a guaranteed critical hit for huge damage, or even escape a losing battle should the tables turn on you.
Ranger
The Ranger is a master of bows and ranged combat! This class moves more quickly than others when aiming their bow.
It's worth noting that a fully upgraded bow is almost as strong as the best sword and should not be underestimated!
When playing as a team this class excels from the back lines, softening up targets or taking out enemy casters. As a solo Ranger you can utilise their dash ability to quickly reposition and keep your enemies at optimal distance.
Witch
The Witch is a highly mobile class that can use their broom to fly over spikes, traps and water hazards whilst moving far quicker than most other classes.
When combined with the Witch's natural inclination for potions, which can be shared with allies, you become a powerful force for good in longer dungeons and punishing boss fights.
Pirate
The Pirate is a brawler, fitting in-between the Knight's tankiness and the Hero's mobility. But what does it matter if you're not as fast as other heroes when you have your trusty parrot!
Similar to the Witch's broom, your parrot will fly you away, or into the danger to make the Pirate a surprisingly mobile and flexible melee focused choice.
Reaper
The Reaper is a high damage dealing class with a bit of a drawback on defence. But, thanks to their unique 'Burst' ability they can take more risks than other classes and hang onto the thin line between life and death.
How do they do this? Well, upon finding themselves in a sticky situation they can turn into a skull and quickly manoeuvre to safety. During this time they are invulnerable to damage, allowing them to adopt a high risk / high reward style of gameplay.
Bomber
The Bomber is an explosive class that makes every adventure into a dungeon a blast!
They can use their 'Bomb Blast' jump to both hop a short distance and stun enemies caught in the explosion. They can also kick bombs at enemies, reducing the risk of self damage by carrying the bomb and allowing for pinpoint bomb accuracy on enemies at range.
Please Note: The Bomber will be a free unlock for everyone that purchases Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos in the first two weeks following launch on February 23rd. After that it will be available for a small extra cost.
Next Week in the Heroes' Hall
That wraps up this week's Heroes' Hall!

It has been a while since our last Heroes’ Hall, but with the exciting news that we’re launching here on Steam this February 23rd we’re back and ready to rock!
To get things rolling, in this week’s Heroes Hall we’re taking a look at how the game builds a bespoke experience for every player, whether they’re taking on Tasos alone or with up to three other friends.
An Adventure Made for You!
When building a game world that is built for both single-player and multiplayer we faced the challenge, “How do we make this a satisfying, fun and fulfilling experience for both solo and multiplayer parties?”.
The answer for us came in the form of procedural generation of the game’s dungeons that not only build themselves around the number of players in the game but could dynamically shift in an instant should the player count increase or decrease.
This means that both someone playing on their own, as well those in a pair or group, will get a complete Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos experience with their own puzzles to solve, traps to deal with and enemy numbers to take down.
It also means that if you start of playing solo, you can invite a friend or three and the game will immediately scale to that change and then revert to the solo experience when they leave. This set-up is fully flexible, and we feel gives the player the freedom to experience the game how they please.
To give you a look at this process in action we’ve grabbed some examples:
1 Player vs 4 Players
In single player the lone Hero must place the blocks onto the pressure plates to pass the puzzle. In multiplayer examples of this puzzle type, the players must instead use their bodyweight to simultaneously activate the plates.
1 Player vs 2 Players
In single player the lone Hero only needs to use the button to alternate one colour-based wall, whereas in two-player they must rely on their party member to rotate the button through multiple walls that wouldn’t be possible if the Hero pulling the lever were on their own.
But not all puzzles are safe…
Many of the puzzles you’ll encounter in Tasos’ Dungeons won’t just let you sit there and solve them. You’ll have to contend with various traps and monster mobs that will take any opportunity to strike you down whilst you’re distracted.
But, should the worst happen and one of your party members gets taken down, what happens to the puzzle? Well, we asked ourselves this question and decided that rather than leaving players stuck, or forcing them to find a Resurrection Shrine, we would have the puzzles immediately change to be achievable by the remaining living players.
We’ve got some examples of this at work below:
When Arrow Puzzles go wrong…
They used to be an adventurer like you until…
Even more complex puzzles, like the one where you’re tasked with navigating an Orb through impassable barriers will change to still allow the survivors to complete it:
A Fair Fight
We’ve spoken of how the dungeon’s rooms and traps change, but what of the enemies?
Initially when testing how to balance enemies around player numbers we tried increasing enemy HP, as well as their numbers to increase the challenge for groups of players. However we soon found out that this led to fights being more chaotic and tanky, rather than as tactful and decisive as we’d like.
This led us to settle on extra enemies spawning instead depending on player count, thus maintaining a consistent combat experience whether you’re playing solo or in a group of two, three or four.
See you next week!
That wraps up this week’s Heroes’ Hall and by the Goddesses does it feel good to be back.
If you have any questions, feel free to pop them in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer them.
You can try out the free demo and support us ahead of launch by giving us a heroic Wishlist at the following link:

In this week's edition of Heroes' Hall we're taking a look at one of the aspects of town building that you'll be able to utilise - upgrading and customising your very own home.
Not only is your home a great place to relax, unwind and entertain your fellow heroes, but if you fall in combat and can't be resurrected you'll return safe and sound back at your house and ready to roll!
Humble Beginning
When you first awaken in the land of Tasos, you'll find yourself in an old, run down cabin. It's not much, but it's yours and a roof over a weary hero's head.
Luckily for you, your new ally Griff has a knack for building and will help you fix up the place!
With enough materials and loot you'll even be able to expand your house multiple times to add additional rooms.
Through The Keyhole
As you explore the world, build new shops and raid dungeons you'll come across new types of objects and furniture!
Once discovered these items will be unlocked for purchase at the Intori General store, which can then be placed inside your home as you please.
Be on the lookout for new beds, chairs, rugs, storage and snazzy homes for your favourite fish.
Pick out your furniture, select the wall colour and really make it your own!
Just make sure to have enough furniture and beds if you're expecting visitors in the form of other players...
See you next year!
We'll be taking a short break on the Heroes' Hall posts over Christmas, but fear not we'll be back in January!
Enjoy the holidays and get ready for 2020, the year of Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos!
For Heroes' Hall number 9 we decided to take a step back from combat and look at how heroes will have to use their brain, instead of their brawn, to overcome some situations!
Whether you're exploring on your own, or in a party of up to four players the puzzles you face will be built around how many of you there are - this means accessible and fun puzzles no matter the size of your hero party.
Now, onto a look at some of the puzzles you'll be tackling...
Skittering Blocks
The blocks that go bump in the night!
These blocks are inhabited by friendly little monsters that want nothing more that to return to their home. This shy, skittery critter can only run in straight lines, so it's up to you to figure out which way it needs to run. A gentle push is all that's needed to encourage it on its way.
Yargh! A cunning Pirate hero will earn the booty!
Heroes that return this monster to its rightful place are sure to be rewarded!
Orb Pedestals
These Orb Pedestals always meet the hero in pairs. Upon one you'll find a heavy glass orb, the other an empty space that you'll have to move the heavy glass orb to.
To me, to you!
This can only be achieved by having one player carry it across by hand, but you didn't think it'd be that easy did you? Hostile monsters will seek to attack and knock the orb from your hands, magical barriers will shatter the orb on contact and more...
Has a bone to pick with your orb...
You'll need to rely on your companions and their catching skills in order to safely get the orb to its goal!
Pressure Plates
The classic hero obstacle, whether its in puzzle or trap form these are a staple classic!
Luckily for you the Dungeons of Tasos are full of these stone pressure plates. You'll need to press them down with something heavy, like a stone block or conveniently placed fellow hero!
Many of these pressure plate puzzles will change with the number of heroes in your group, so co-ordinate and work together to find the solution!
Beast Statues
During the ancient days of Tasos, many different statues were build by the skilled sculpters. Most of these are still simply statues, but others hide a darker secret...
Push the right statues and you might open a locked door or reveal a treasure chest full of gems and loot! But stay alert good heroes, other statues might actually be monsters in disguise who will strike at you when you least expect it!
That wraps up our introduction to some of the puzzles you'll face on your grand quest through Tasos.
Keep your sword sharp and your wit sharper, you'll need it!
Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos is available to Wishlist now! Show your support and add us to yours -
