Hello everyone! Today we’d like to continue unveiling some of the little details about Object 6 that could be easily missed unless you knew where to look.
The Limb
If you’ve been paying attention to the main story in INSOMNIA, you should’ve heard about Limb — a colossal delta-module storage facility that hosts three quarters of Urb's population undergoing the Big Sleep procedure. So you’ve heard about it, you’ve seen it in the videos, gifs and screenshots, but does is it actually exist as a location inside the game? Yes, it does! You can’t go there (yet) but it’s certainly a part of the station:
Easter Eggs anyone?
We are quite sure you’ve got the Blade Runner and Planescape: Torment references while playing INSOMNIA, but has anyone paid attention to the “random” books that have been thoroughly collected and stored in the small but proud library inside Object 6’s one and only brothel?
Invisible people
As a legitimate citizen of Object 6 you don’t always pay attention to the people that actually make your life more comfortable (as far as this can be possible on a giant spaceship that has been traveling for more than 400 years). The thing is those people who are often dismissively referred to as “ghetters” work hard to make sure the station can stay operational day after day. And yet, no one notices that. Rusty engines and dirty dishes won’t clean themselves, you know, so show some appreciation for the work of others:
This is just the tip of the iceberg and we’d really love to hear your own stories about all of the little nuances of INSOMNIA’s world you’ve discovered during your playthrough. Share them in the comments below!
Hello everyone! While our team is working on a more detailed report regarding INSOMNIA’s transition to the latest version of Unreal Engine 4, we’d like to introduce a useful tool that might be handy for at least some of you guys. We are talking about the official FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) thread that is now live in the Community Hub.
We did our best to cover the most frequently asked questions in this document, however we are quite sure this FAQ can be improved greatly with your help. So basically if you have been asking a specific question(s) in our Community Hub, got your problem solved via either the involvement of fellow players or the dev team AND believe that this information will be helpful to other insomniacs — let us know and we will expand the current version of the FAQ!
Remembering the pre-New Year stream
As some of you might remember, we held a live stream last month. We were giving away quite a few copies of the game itself, Deluxe Set DLC and OST to those lucky ones who were fast enough to grab those Steam keys (we had more than 600 simultaneous viewers that day, yay!).
If you didn’t get a chance to view the stream, we have some great news for you — our team of scavengers was able to recover the original source of the stream that has been broadcasted from one of the most distant and abandoned sectors of Object 6. It is believed that the person who is responsible for this act of low tech video vandalism (illegal broadcasts are generally not allowed) was able to recover an ancient piece of simulation technology to virtually roam the rusty corridors of the station and interact with it.
We did our best to recover and remaster this broadcast for your viewing pleasure but please be aware of possible static disturbances that might occur in the process. We warned you :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK1nYLDPDvI Until next time!
Hello everyone! We are glad to greet you in 2019! Since it's already January 11th, it's time to announce the winners of our screenshot contest where one lucky winner will get a GeForce 1080 GTX graphics card.
January 9th was the deadline for screenshot submissions and with this in mind, we have approved 139 entries for participation using the WelcomeThePsychosis tag.
Our team was pleasantly surprised by the amount of quality scenes you guys have captured. It wasn't easy to pick who gets the main prize and decide between the runner-ups. Anyway, no more talking — let's find out the names of our heroes: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1618830914 We are proud to present the almighty GeForce 1080 GTX video card to our long time supporter and loyal fan whose history with INSOMNIA dates all the way back to the Kickstarter days. Of course, this is not the reason the entry won. Just look at this astonishing dark themed somnia shore screenshot with a character wearing the most powerful armor in the game (other than the “tank armor” of course)!
We are super thankful to all of the participants who invested time, creativity and effort into their submissions, since this is exactly what makes it all matter. If you didn't find your nickname in the shortlist — don't give up, we have planned more interesting contests for the future!
What's next?
In our previous update, we have mentioned INSOMNIA’s transition to the latest version of Unreal Engine 4. This switch is expected to improve the overall performance of the game and fix an array of issues that couldn't be addressed otherwise.
We are happy to let you know that the dev team is halfway through this process, but there’s more work to be done and testing to carry out in order to ensure everything works as expected.
Hello everyone! 2018 is almost over and we felt that now is a perfect time for some presents (we did promise something special, right?). After all of the the support and patience our community has shown us during the past three months, our publisher and our team want to give something back to express our appreciation to you all…
...so here comes the New Year’s Screenshot Contest!
The world of INSOMNIA is a unique, macabre and bizarre place where the most crazy and unexpected things can happen — be it entering the surrealistic world of somnia, meeting a fellow ghetter that was shot in the face twice or escaping the strange wildlife of Object 6. Thankfully, you are able to save these special moments in the form of screenshot. Share it with us and the community for a chance to receive a handsome reward!
The prize
The winner will get a GeForce® GTX 1080 video card as a token of our gratitude. We will also grant a few keys to the Deluxe Set DLC and the OST to anyone else who we feel deserves it.
What we ask you to do is the following:
save the most visually incredible / stunning / sick moment from the game you’ve experienced so far in the form of a screenshot (you can make a few if you want to);
upload it to INSOMNIA’s Community Hub in the Screenshots tab and add WelcomeThePsychosis into the title, so that we know you are participating.
Please note — screenshots should be made specifically for this contest (i.e. you can’t submit screenshots made prior to today). As a bonus, you can add a description to your entry and explain why exactly the specific scenario in the screenshot feels special to you, but it’s not mandatory.
Spread the word and tell your friends, so they can show their support by liking your screenshot in the game’s Community Hub — this will be one of several parameters that we will be taking into account other than our team’s votes.
Also, make sure you’ve read these contest rules before participating.
We will accept participants till January 9th and the winners will be announced by January 11th (more details to follow). Let the contest begin!
P.S. if you are new to the whole INSOMNIA: The Ark thing check out our pre-New Year’s live stream today on our Steam page in approximately 2 hours (6PM GMT, 10AM PT, 1PM EST)! You can expect some high octane action and we will be giving away several keys for the game itself, the Deluxe Set DLC and the OST in the process! The link to the stream should appear at the top of the Steam page:
Hello everyone! The holiday season is already here, showering us with snow and (hopefully) gifts! And while we are getting ready for 2019, it's hard to keep the thoughts of summer out of our minds.
Most earthlings get their annual fill of sunshine. But what about the poor souls that have left their planet in search of a new home? What do ghetters dream of during the long, lonely nights, surrounded by the metal carcass of a soulless space metropolis? The clip below provides the answers you seek:
INSOMNIA has been out for a while and many of you have asked about and patiently waited for the game to take part in a Steam sale. Even though there are still some issues that our team needs to address before creating new content, we are now fairly confident about the game’s quality and potential. Thanks to the support of our most active community members, we were able to make a significant step towards a better version of the game and will continue to do so.
Now is a time to welcome new players, and INSOMNIA: The Ark will participate in the Steam Winter Sale! Don’t miss the biggest discount we’ve had since launch:
Hello everyone! Today is the day as we are releasing the next patch for INSOMNIA: The Ark. Previously, we’ve outlined a roadmap regarding the specific issues we’ve been working on. So let us go over some of the highlights below:
A key remapping option has been added to the Settings menu. Now it doesn’t matter if you are using QWERTY, AZERTY or a custom made keyboard scrapped from the computer terminal of a lost civilization — we’ve got you covered!
Endgame dialogue with Thel now allows you to get all of the possible story outcomes based on the decisions made throughout the game. Were you helpful enough to the ones in need? Or maybe you pursued your own goals all the way down to the end? Let’s find out!
Lack of option to talk to Riebel in order to complete the “Bane of Mills” quest has been fixed, which was an issue if you were skillful enough to progress with this quest using your hacking skills. Hold on Thyper, we are coming!
Inventory sorting now works as expected and previously equipped items no longer overlay other items. You can now get back to your regular scavenging activities. Just remember to keep your inner kleptomaniac in check or you may find yourself encumbered with heavy loot and your character will suffer from poor combat performance!
The volume level toggles for music and sound effects are sorted out in the Settings menu. Now you can have better control over what you want to hear while roaming Object 6 on your way to… what you’ve been doing lately anyway?
Numerous smaller bug fixes and improvements.
We are still battling our way through a bug with the “Collector” quest and some other settings-related issues, which is something to look forward to in v1.5. And since 2018 is almost over, you are probably wondering about our plans regarding INSOMNIA, aren’t you?
2019 and beyond
Obviously we will continue to collect the feedback you are providing via the Community Hub, comments and other means of communication in order to continue improving the game. At the same time, our priority for the near future is to update the version of the Unreal Engine 4 that INSOMNIA currently uses to the latest one. This should help resolve a few issues like missing textures for specific in-game models, localization-related glitches and generally make the game more stable.
We are researching the subject at the moment and doing all kinds of tests to get an idea of whether the engine update is worth pursuing, as well as what our team and you, our community, can expect from it. Anyway we’ve got plenty of good stuff planned for INSOMNIA in 2019, including content updates, so stay tuned!
P.S. we still have more news for you till the end of 2018, so no worries. See you next week insomniacs ;)
Hello everyone! First things first — we know you are waiting for the v1.4 patch to be released. The update is wrapping up nicely, with almost all of the planned fixes already in the game. As a reminder, this patch will finally introduce an option to remap keys and a slew of improvements.
However, continuous testing by the QA team revealed additional localization-related issues that could severely affect your enjoyment of the game. We were faced with the option of releasing the build and attempting to fix these issues afterwards or taking an extra week or so to iron them out. Keeping in mind our priority to release higher quality builds, we’ve decided that option 2 is a better choice, especially if we aim to satisfy the expectations of our community. Again, thank you for your patience and understanding!
And to keep things interesting, today we will cover a question that was brought up several times in the comments section and the Community Hub: is there a point to playing INSOMNIA more than once? The short answer is “yes”, and besides some obvious arguments like picking a different background for your character (which results in getting unique side quests) or dealing with quest scenarios one way or another, we’ve decided to show you yet another reason to do so.
Sons of Morakh Clan vs The House of Bea Kera
As we’ve mentioned before, Object 6 is home to quite a number of diverse factions. Two of these factions stand out from the rest due to the fanaticism of their members - Bea Kera and the Sons of Morakh.
First, a bit of history. The Sons of Morakh — one of the oldest clans set on forging its path since the days of the Exodus. The "Morakh's Almanac" (a sacred book full of clan legends) says that it all started with the rebels of Taloy city, who illegally entered the territory of Object 6. Morakh was a leader that united them and merged the desperate masses into a militant community.
The former citizens of Taloy were slowly, but surely gaining in strength and numbers. Soon, they were able to hold their own against competing factions and multiply their wealth. "The Sons of Morakh" was an appropriate name chosen by Borka - Morakh’s offspring and successor.
By the time of Zers Morakh, the next leader in line, the clan began to stagnate after being the de-facto leaders of sector D for hundreds of years. A young criminal gang of religious fanatics called The House of Bea Kera has grown in numbers and started spreading its influences, slowly driving the Sons of Morakh out of business.
As a part of the Ordinate faction you, citizen KZ0012, have your own aspirations to follow and goals to achieve. It’s up to you to decide what faction you want to side with. Whether it is Morakhs or Bea Kera fanatics, you will get a different story path and quests to experience.
For instance, if you decide to stick with Sons of Morakh, one of the tasks you will have to carry out in order to prove your loyalty is to literally destroy an underground illegal drug manufacturing facility, where Bea Kera uses the labour of brainwashed religious fanatics:
The place is a dump - the main lamps are no longer functional, leaving only the orange emergency light to bleed through the wire beams. The only well-lit rooms are the ones where drugs are made. Ventilation systems are barely functional, so the air feels thick and hot. And the only way to get an opportunity to pay a visit to this dark place is to make a choice that will make Bea Kera your sworn enemy. On the other hand, you can work for them and witness a whole different story in the process...
Let us know which faction you’ve picked during your playthrough in the comments below. See you next week!
Hello everyone! Today we’d like to share information about the launch time frame for the upcoming patch, as well as 2 new and highly requested improvements coming with the next patch.
In addition to the list of bugs mentioned in one of the previous posts, we’ve managed to narrow down and fix the issue concerning the endgame dialogue with Thel. It prevented players from getting all of the possible story outcomes based on the decisions made throughout the game.
Patch v1.4 will also introduce another highly requested feature since day #1 - key remapping:
Even though we haven’t considered adding this option to the Settings menu before higher priority issues were addressed, one of our team members was able to make this happen without sacrificing other tasks.
The feedback we’ve received since INSOMNIA’s release made it clear that the lack of a key remapping option made the exploration of Object 6 less comfortable and exciting for quite a few players out there. So making it available as soon as possible sounded like a reasonable thing to do.
With that said, our publisher’s QA team found a few critical issues while testing the current patch that will require some additional time to make sure v1.4 will work as intended. You can expect the next patch to be delivered on December 6th or earlier, if possible.
Both HeroCraft and our team feel that it is important to release higher quality updates for INSOMNIA, rather than release a patch that will cause more issues for players and distract us from improving the game further.
Again, thank you for your continuous support and patience. See you next week!
Hello everyone! V1.4 patch fixes are being tested at the moment, and as long as no critical issues are found, the update will be released next week.
In the meantime, let’s get acquainted with the next installment of INSOMNIA: The Ark’s lore series, which is dedicated to the wildlife that was able to adapt to the harsh conditions on Object 6. While some of these creatures are quite common, others remain the subject of spine-chilling stories told by locals.
Introduction
Due to most species’ inability to adapt to the station’s aggressive environment (criomic bloom, exposure to somnia, etc.) the wild fauna of Object 6 is not as diverse as one would expect. The animal breeding program is limited to Urb, with a limited number of farms that raise non-mutated animals and deliver meat. Generally it’s cheaper and faster to produce oma-based food products instead.
Livestock farming is not common in the Near Range and the Junkyard, as herbivorous animals survive poorly in captivity and some edible species of predators are too dangerous to breed.
Orrun
This is an aggressive predatory reptile that can grow up to 2 meters in length and weighs up to 300 kg. The orrun is practically the only animal that is bred in the Near Range. Both the meat and eggs from these reptiles are very nutritious, although it is very expensive since these reptiles are quite gluttonous and very dangerous.
Chelicet
A large arachnid that primarily inhabits the Junkyard, but is also common in the Near Range. Small varieties of chelicets are not as dangerous as their larger brethren, but a pack of these creatures can be a serious threat.
Kabba
Covered in armored plates, the kabba is a powerful but slow animal that dwells mainly in the criomic wastelands. Like most other representatives of the station’s fauna, it doesn’t thrive in captivity. However, this animal represents a valuable trophy for any hunter: the skin and the armored shell are highly valued by artisans and its nutritious, savoury meat is considered to be the best camp food in the Near Range. The kabba serves as a source of meat, milk, leather, and armor plates for ghetters.
Karnar
A predatory mammal that hunts in packs and lives in the Junkyard. It feeds on kabbas, small rodents, and insects. Little else is known about karnars since not many people were lucky enough to survive an encounter with this predator.
Rakh
This powerful predator likes to attack from ambush. Usually hiding in piles of garbage, the rakh exposes its sloping forehead containing a complex sensory organ. Its sight and sense of smell are well developed, and in addition, the rakh’s paw pads are able to discern surface vibrations and irregularities. When the creature attacks, it rips its prey apart with long claws. Despite the associated danger, the rakh serves as a source of claw blades, skin, and meat for the survivors on Object 6.
Have you met any of those creatures while exploring the space metropolis? Let us know in comments below!
Hello everyone! As we’ve previously mentioned, this week we are bringing you additional info regarding the upcoming update to version 1.4 (ETA: 2 weeks.). Patch #4 aims to address quite a few problems with the main quests and locations, inventory/item management and various sound-related issues. So without further adieu, we bring you the list of improvements planned for the next patch!
Settings menu and Sound-related issues:
The main menu stops responding in full screen mode.
Regular background music keeps playing during cutscenes / intros.
Sound effects can still be heard even when the volume level is set to a minimum amount in the Settings menu.
Low FPS sometimes caused by a memory leak.
Inventory / Items:
Inventory sorting doesn’t work as expected.
Previously equipped items overlay other items inside the inventory.
The hint regarding picking the sword in the Prologue (the tutorial part of the game) stays on screen if the sword was already picked.
RGD grenades don’t cause damage.
Localization / Fonts:
Small fonts in credits.
Inappropriate translations for the controls in the Settings menu.
Quest fixes:
Lack of the option to talk to Riebel in order to complete the “Bane of Mills” quest.
“Hot Blooded” can’t be completed if a quest item (a letter) has been picked up by the player in an older version of the game.
No dialogue option to “give the gun” to The Dowel is available.
The “Collector” quest cannot be completed.
Character finds himself in a doctor’s office after completing “At the Bottom” quest and entering Vulture’s Nest (without an option to leave).
A quest item (a TV set) stays inside the inventory after completing the “Blue Screen” quest.
Locations:
Wrong enemy types enter the pool in the Rusty Arena.
Random encounter with Kazim keeps repeating itself.
Game crashes after exiting Urb Perimeter during the “Enemy Behind the Walls” quest.
End game location lacks specific textures and models after saving and reloading.
Character is automatically transferred to the Adaptation Block if any save file has been loaded while being at ‘Seaside’.
Misc:
Game crashes during long continuous playing sessions.
Morty gets stuck in textures while the player uses a ladder.
Please keep in mind that this list is not final and is subject to change and expand. We are also in the process of evaluating and considering an option to update the version of the Unreal Engine 4 that INSOMNIA currently uses to the latest one. This should automatically solve quite a few issues like missing textures for specific in-game models, etc. As always, we will keep you posted regarding our progress.
