The Deluxe Set gets updated!

This Friday, we will be adding the last piece from the currently announced list of items in the Deluxe Set - the comic book:

Delve into the story of Thyper - the infamous mercenary also known as the Bane of Mills, whom you might remember from the Prologue chapter of INSOMNIA: The Ark. This issue of the comic contains 20+ pages packed with action and backstory that introduce readers to some of the key characters that appear in the actual game. Who are they? What is the motivation behind their actions? There’s only one way to find out…

Other than that, we will also be updating the game’s OST archive with a .flac version for those of you that prefer lossless music formats.

Important notice regarding the Deluxe Set

Since we are delaying the release of the comic book by 1 day, the Deluxe Set giveaway will continue until Monday (October 15th) and not tomorrow (October 11th), as originally planned. This should give players ample time to make sure they’ve got the deluxe content (art book, OST, comic book) copied from
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Insomnia The Ark\Insomnia_v2\Content
to another location on their hard disk before these items are gone from their original folder.

Please keep in mind - to keep access to the in-game bonus armor set (Dalok's Jacket, Leggings & Pack, Eyon Helmet and Hansen Electric Saw) you need to take the equipment out of the locker where it was originally placed and move the items to any other safe storage place inside the game or equip it on your character.

Community Hub changes

Vault_13, our community manager, is in the middle of splitting English and Russian threads into two dedicated subforums to make it more comfortable and easy for everyone to chat and discuss the game in a language they are more comfortable with. We will soon be adding a FAQ section for both subforums to help everyone find the most common issues and ways of solving them.

If you have any other ideas on how we can improve the quality of player-to-dev and player-to-player communication in the Community Hub, feel free to let us know in the comments below!

ATTENTION! All in-game bonus equipment will stay intact for everyone (now, after 15th of October and in the future). It doesn't matter of you have them already or plan to start a new game - they will be available at the same spot. Currently we are talking to Valve support to resolve this situation in a way that will satisfy everyone. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
INSOMNIA: The Ark - Vault_13

Hello everyone! It’s been a week since INSOMNIA’s release, and boy was that a ride: the amount of discussions in the Community Hub has jumped from 130 to 540+, the first wave of guides was published by our most active members, as well as some overdue wiki updates. And of course, we’ve released patch #1 as a first step to make INSOMNIA: The Ark a better game. It’s time to make another step in that direction.

So what about patch #2?

Earlier this week, we’ve published a list of fixes included in this patch. More issues have been addressed since:
  • Fixed invisible walls around the stairs for the quest "What is the price of freedom".
  • Fixed a quest item disappearing after completing the quest "Ancient One".
  • Fixed the capsule not opening in the location "Morach Base".
  • Fixed door collisions so that the player character doesn’t get stuck in the location “Reservation D-106”.
  • Fixed the quest log for the mission "Closet showing" not updating correctly.
  • Fixed a dialogue branch at the location "Vulture’s Nest" to resolve a conflict with another dialogue in the location “Zone B-27”.
  • Improved companion A.I. to better follow the player character upon entering a new location.
  • Improvements to the “Bypass” location:
    1. eliminated the possibility of the player character getting stuck in certain spots
    2. added the ability to use the elevator
    3. added more cover options
Please keep in mind that the actual amount of fixes is bigger (UI, collisions, etc.) and mainly concern bugs submitted by the publisher’s QA team.

We have already started working on patch #3 and will continue gathering your feedback via the submission form, Community Hub discussions and social media, so please keep going! We highly appreciate the time and effort you’ve put in helping us improve the game.

Thank you!
INSOMNIA: The Ark - Tissera

Hello everyone! We've been working hard all weekend to gather, analyze and test a number of the most common issues you have reported so far through the Community Hub and the bug submission form.

Fixing some of the problems encountered is taking a bit longer than expected. Our current plan is to delay the release of the patch until the end of this week to make sure the latest build is as stable as possible.

We thank everyone for the time and effort spent helping us track these issues down, as that is the most effective way for us to know what went wrong and how we can solve any emerging problems. This brings us to the list of issues addressed in the coming patch:
  • Fixed the game crashing for some players after picking a class and getting weapons/equipment.
  • Fixed the game crashing for some players in the Prologue, after exiting ‘Thyper’s shelter’ location.
  • Fixed the game crashing while the player is in the ‘B-27’ location.
  • Fixed the game crashing when players attempted to sell more than 50 items from the inventory.
  • Fixed the game crashing should the player attempt to break a 100 item stack in the inventory.
  • Fixed the game occasionally freezing on some higher-end systems (GeForce GTX 1050 TI, Six-Core AMD Processor).
  • Fixed a bug with a particular dialogue branch that could cause the game to crash.
  • Fixed limited mouse cursor movement in a 2к/4k display resolution while the game is run in Fullscreen mode.
  • Fixed an issue with the maximum screen resolution not being set while changing the resolution in Fullscreen mode.
  • Fixed a bug with an elevator becoming unavailable after loading a save in the Customs Authority location.
  • Fixed an issue with the ‘Reloading’ message staying on-screen if the player holstered
their weapon while the reload animation was playing.
  • Fixed a bug where players could equip a few decorative weapons that were not meant to be used by the player character in combat.
  • Fixed an issue where players were occasionally not able to leave a location due to a random event/mission.
  • Fixed a bug where the sounds effects for eating and drinking would occasionally keep playing even after the process is interrupted by the player.
  • Updated a few item descriptions to correctly display their effects.
  • The achievements "Back in Business" and "Sir, yes sir!" now unlock correctly.
We are also aware that the issue with the mixed-up localizations (bits of Russian text appearing in the English version of the game and vice versa) is affecting your enjoyment of the game. Rest assured, it is a high-priority bug that we hope to fix in the patches that are coming after this one.

Our team, along with the publisher, will continue to gather your feedback. We plan to improve INSOMNIA on a weekly basis (or bi-weekly, depending on the severity of problems encountered) in order to meet your high expectations with regards to our game.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We hope you continue exploring Object 6 with us!

INSOMNIA: The Ark - Vault_13

Hello everyone! Yesterday was a historical day for our team since it marked the release of our very first game that we’ve been developing for many years. It came a long way from an isometric Ogre 3D project to a game you’ve already had a chance to explore.

However, even though we were beta testing the game and improved it significantly thanks to player feedback, we were still not able to deliver INSOMNIA in as best shape as possible. Some unexpected technical hurdles cropped up (like the mix up of different game localization) and thus the release was marred by these issues. Please accept our apologies.

The current goal is to buckle up and hunt down all of the problems you’ve encountered so far. To start things off, we are releasing our first patch today that will address the following issues:
  • Game freezes when the resolution is changed mid-level should be fixed.
  • Fixed issues with players getting stuck in certain locations (Red House, Morach Base, etc.)
  • Fixed a bug preventing a range of achievements to be unlocked by players.
  • Fixed a key door not opening in the "J-27" location during a mission.
  • Fixed character moving along the train tracks after entering an anomaly.
  • Fixed a bug with weapon occasionally not displaying correctly in the class selection screen.
  • Fixed random FPS drop in the House of Bea Kera.
  • Fixed missing Deblin’s eye implants in cut-scene.
  • Added a proper icon for the frag grenade.
  • Added proper animation for "biostim-5".
Thank you all for the comments and suggestions in the Community Hub! We really appreciate your understanding and patience while we continue to address your feedback as quick as is humanly possible. Please continue submitting your bug reports and thoughts via this form, since this the most effective way for us to collect and prioritize feedback.

Our team will be working all weekend, so you can expect the next patch to arrive early next week. If you have any questions, we will be more than happy to answer them in the comments below and in the Community Hub.

And even though Object 6 has been drifting in space for more than 400 years, we promise to make it a better place for everyone as soon as we can!
INSOMNIA: The Ark - Vault_13

Hello everyone! The wait is over - you can now purchase INSOMNIA: The Ark from the Steam store page:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/783170/INSOMNIA_The_Ark/

This was one hell of a journey! We are thankful to each and every one of you who believed in this game and helped us make it a reality :)

You mentioned $1000 was on the table?

You read that correctly! As you might remember, we’ve recently made the Deluxe Edition free for the first 2 weeks of launch and promised another treat for the fans. It’s time to reveal it :)

You can get $1000 to cover your wishlist by completing the following steps:
  • Record a video made from the full version of INSOMNIA: The Ark - it can be a short, funny vid with captions or a full fledged narrated let’s play / review. Whatever you feel best captures the game’s atmosphere, characters, encounters...literally anything you want!

  • Upload it to the Videos tab in our Community Hub AND add a description telling us what's the vid about and indicating that it was made specifically for the contest. This is a way for us to know what videos are actually participating. As a bonus, you can leave a link to the video in the comments section below this post.

  • Spread the word and tell your friends, so they can show their support by liking your vid in the game’s Community Hub, since this will be one of the parameters we will be taking into account other than our team’s votes.

Please note that this video should be made specifically for the contest and you must use a full game version that just released (not a demo or any of the closed beta builds). In addition, we might ask you to provide us with the original video file to check that you’ve actually made it yourself (and not just downloaded it from some other player), as well as for potential use in future HeroCraft promotional activities. By participating in this contest, you agree with the terms listed above.

Videos will be accepted till October 18th and we will announce the lucky winner the very next day. $1000 will be added to his or her Steam Wallet via digital gift cards or a direct Steam Wallet top-up. We will also be giving away 2 HeroCraft Developer Bundles (8 games worth $106) as runner-up prizes.

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments below!

P.S. Also make sure you’ve read these boring contest rules before participating. We bet most of you won’t anyway, but at least we tried :D

Original Post

Hello everyone! Just 1 day left until INSOMNIA: The Ark releases on Steam and other stores, so we’ve prepared two very, very special announcements to make this affair even sweeter. One for today and one for tomorrow ;)

As a thank you for your continued enthusiasm and passion for the game, everyone who buys INSOMNIA: The Ark during the first 2 weeks of launch (September 27th - October 11th) will get the Deluxe Edition instead of the regular one! After this period, the Deluxe Edition will be distributed with an appropriate price tag, so this is your chance to get it for free.

What's so special about this game edition you may ask? Let’s find out!

Digital Art Book

INSOMNIA: The Ark - is not just a game, but a whole world that our team has lived in all of these years, trying to create something unique, something that can take the life of its own. The game became noticed by fans for many reasons, but it is the setting and the art style that make it truly stand out.

To create a distinct visual style, we have studied hundreds of materials and references that include historical architectural plans, as well as prototypes of equipment and items from the early twentieth century.

You can expect to see works made by such artists as Adrian Smith, Jan Vergen, Yong Yi Lee, John Lew, Alexandr Torchinov, Vasily Hazykov and other talented individuals who helped create a unique look for the game’s universe.

This digital art book (pdf format) contains over 130 pages full of high quality concept art, sketches and models - everything that helped create such a cruel, yet attractive world of INSOMNIA: The Ark.

Digital Comic Book

Delve into the story of Thyper - the infamous mercenary also known as the Bane of Mills, whom you might remember from the Prologue chapter of INSOMNIA: The Ark. This issue of the comic (pdf format) contains pages packed with action and backstory that introduce readers to some of the key characters that appear in the actual game. Who are they? What is the motivation behind their actions? There’s only one way to find out…

Please note that the comic book will become available on October 11th in the form of a Steam update.

Original Soundtrack

It’s not a secret that music plays a very important role in helping create games with rich atmosphere. INSOMNIA’s OST is no exception to that rule. 12 ambient tracks (mp3, 320 kbps) inspired by the very best (Mark Morgan, Vangelis, Gustavo Santaolalla, Max Richter, Brian Eno) and brought to you by the incredibly talented Textere Oris will provide you with perfect company both inside and outside the game. Here’s a quick sample:

Exclusive in-game item set

Object 6 is no place for a picnic. You have to keep your eyes open at all times to stay alive. However, centuries of living in such harsh conditions has taught locals a thing or two about survival. One of them was Dalok - a famous adventurer, a thief and an artificer known for his many inventions. His equipment always had the perfect balance of strength, convenience and functionality. Even years after Dalok is no longer with us, you can still enjoy this unique set of equipment that includes:

  • Dalok's Jacket, Leggings & Pack - made of rakh hide fortified with thin armor plates and a plethora of hidden pockets and fasteners.

  • Eyon Helmet - this piece of equipment is a part of an outfit used by space shuttle pilots. Gear like this is a true rarity in the Near Range.

  • Hansen Electric Saw - part of a limited series that was made available in the second century after the Exodus. Thanks to a titanium disc, this weapon can pierce even through medium-grade armor. The legendary killer Blister, with a head count of more than 150 victims, is often depicted using this kind of electric saw.
ATTENTION: You will be able to find this armor set next to your personal locker in the Vulture’s Nest.

So what’s next?

INSOMNIA: The Ark will launch tomorrow September 27th @ 8pm GMT+3 / 10:00 PDT / 13:00 EDT, followed by our next special announcement. The launch will also be accompanied by a live stream on our Steam page! Come share the moment with us :)

Let us show you around this magnificent vessel and check out the best spots for all types of passengers. No worries, there’s enough time to see everything. After all, we’ve been traveling for 412 years already!

Facts to consider before waking up from the Big Sleep

Object 6 is a megalithic interplanetary station created for the colonization of remote star systems. Behold a multi-level metropolis with fully autonomous life support systems that are capable of accommodating up to 10 million colonists. The station was designed for the long haul, with the aim of allowing its inhabitants to be fully self-sustained.

The official maps show just over half of the available sectors. Exploring the rest of the station has proved to be challenging due to rubble, floods and the overall damage sustained from bombing during the Last War.

Currently, Object 6 is home to about 1.5 million people, of whom 600,000 are located in Urb and 900,000 in the Near Range and Junkyard.

Destination #1 - Urb

The Nomah Autonomy was established several years after the Exodus. Urb - an isolated, autonomous sector became the capital of the official authority. A proper stronghold, it is the most secure and well-developed part of the station.

During the first forty years after the Exodus, Urb was ruled by Prime-General Azar, who established a military dictatorship. By this time, the station’s resources were almost depleted and Azar had to enforce a strict birth control policy. Soon after, a complete ban on childbearing came into effect.

From this point onwards, new citizens of Urb all came to life in the Incubator. Genetic adjustment programs help newborns adapt to the station’s living conditions and, if you believe official propaganda, prevent a psychological disease called “somnia”.

Despite the prohibitions, some Urbanites have secretly started families outside of Urb, mostly in the reservations inhabited by ghetters (descendants of illegal refugees). Still, Urb is arguably the best place to be during your stay on Object 6!

Destination #2 - Near Range

The Near Range is a vast territory around Urb controlled by the Nomah Autonomy. Important facilities are located here and thus, a permanent military presence is required. The Near Range is inhabited by ghetters, who prefer the relative safety of the half-abandoned tunnels to the unpredictable, often perilous life in the Junkyard.

Despite the high number of military outposts, it is easy to stumble upon a band of marauders or a pack of aggressive creatures — they usually dwell in the lower levels and move closer to transport routes in search of prey. These minor inconveniences aside, if you are a ghetter wise to the way things work around here, Near Range is going to feel like home.

Destination #3 - Junkyard

The Junkyard consists of vast unexplored territories outside the Near Range and is home to deformants and junkster gangs. Absolute anarchy reigns supreme, and living conditions are not suitable for anyone with plans for their body parts being intact.

Workers that have received a work visa and are able to find employment in Urb are considered prosperous. They present a caricature for what passes as higher middle class in the Junkyard. Many infamous criminal clans claim this territory as their home. Some of these gangs have ties and history that date back to the Exodus itself. But that's a whole different story…

P.S. We hope you enjoyed this travel guide, and remember - everyone can find the right place for themselves on Object 6! See you soon on our interplanetary space metropolis on September 27th!

Dive into a cruel, yet strangely lived-in world of INSOMNIA: The Ark with this trailer reveal!

https://youtu.be/1l2ineb7HaA Following a disastrous war that turned their home planet into piles of radioactive ash, the people of Nomah flocked to Object 6 — a megalithic interplanetary station headed towards a distant planet. But not everyone got equal access to the station’s supplies and resources. Hundreds of thousands of evacuees were left in the darkness of abandoned hallways. And they are not pleased...

INSOMNIA: The Ark is a dieselpunk sci-fi RPG about the slowly degrading remnants of human society attempting to survive on an abandoned space metropolis. The game is set to release on September 27th.
INSOMNIA: The Ark - Vault_13

Hello everyone! While the next game trailer is receiving a few finishing touches, we would like to share one more piece of good news. Thanks to HeroCraft (game publisher), our team took part in the GTP Indie Cup Summer’18 - one of the biggest online competitions for indie developers in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, backed by Unreal Engine, Unity, Amazon and other notable companies.

INSOMNIA: The Ark was one of the 109 titles that took part. The game was eligible for 5 nominations and won 3 (!) awards including:

Press quotes

Lately, INSOMNIA: The Ark has been a frequent guest at PC Gamer (see “12 cool-looking indie games in development right now”) and other outlets. A nice bonus from taking part in competitions like this is the additional attention from the games media, and we feel like it’s a perfect time to share a few select quotes:

"One of the things that I like the most with “Insomnia” is its rich environment and eye for details, because it really looks and feels as if you are wandering around in a dystopian / dieselpunk / sci-fi / apocalyptic environment (the game takes place on a huge space station called “Object 6”)."

- Jonas “O.J” Ek @ The Gaming Ground
"The most fascinating aspect of Insomnia so far is its worldbuilding. It’s openly dieselpunk, but it doesn’t adhere to that subgenre quite so literally. It seems more invested in creating its own unique world with dieselpunk elements, just as Fallout is its own unique brand of atompunk."

- Richard Costa @ Techraptor
"The non-linear storytelling, gameplay, and overall tone of the game fill the void that BioShock has left in the years since I first went to Rapture, and Insomnia: The Ark‘s inspirations from that game are clear, while it still retains its own identity with a captivating, intriguing world."

- Ashley Donnelly @ DualShockers

INSOMNIA: The Ark - Vault_13

Hello everyone! As you may know, INSOMNIA’s story begins on Object 6 - a giant space metropolis that has been on its way to the mysterious Evacuation Point for more than 400 years.

You may wonder how and why the people of Nomah ended up in such a situation in the first place. Fear not, our latest lore entry is here to bring you the answers ;)

Home planet

The story of the Nomah nation starts on Teina Nui - a name give by the ancients to their home planet with two bright suns shining high above it. Many centuries have passed before the Nomans united vast territories under their banner, establishing the greatest country that ever existed — the United Nomah Hierarchy.

The age of the Hierarchy became the most fruitful era in the history of human civilization. Nonetheless, an empire of such colossal proportions could not remain undisturbed for long. A political bloc with heavy ties to the military called SORG had formed in the northern dominion, quickly gaining influence and announcing its independence soon after. Fearing the loss of hegemony, the Hierarchy struck first.

The Last War

This was the beginning of the Last War, which became the longest and biggest conflict humankind had ever endured. Millions of lives have been sacrificed; the planet was on the edge of an environmental catastrophe. Glaciers began covering ruined cities when the last Hierarchy stronghold fell.

Towards the end of the war, SORG held a technological advantage. They have introduced golems — giant battle machines that were made from soldiers with heavily modified bodies. Golems were remarkable warriors that held no pity for the enemies of the SORG regime. They lacked the flaws of human infantry - fear was unknown to these creatures; they didn’t need to eat, sleep or rest either. The Hierarchy had no choice - the only way to stop the golems was total nuclear annihilation. The land of Teina Nui turned into piles of radioactive ash and the fate of the Nomah nation was sealed.

When the disastrous outcome of the war became clear, one of Hierarchy’s veterans, general Azar, sent the remnants of his army to northern shores. Their goal was to secure Object 6 — a megalithic interplanetary station, also known as the Ark, that was part of a colonization project predating the war. Abandoned and scarred by orbital bombardment, the station spent many long years at rest in an inconspicuous valley not far from a city called Taloi.

The Exodus

The news about the upcoming evacuation had spread with incredible speed. Thousands of people flocked to a ruined Taloi suburb with hope of salvation. Despite strict control measures taken by the army, many of the fleeing refugees managed to sneak aboard Object 6. The station, controlled by an autonomous navigation system, left the orbit of Teina Nui and headed towards the Evacuation Point — a distant planet where the Nomans hoped to start a new life.

The Nomah nation was saved from the mechanized legions of the SORG regime, but the situation aboard Object 6 was getting worse every day. The army occupied Urb - an isolated sector containing most of the station’s supplies and resources. Hundreds of thousands of evacuees outside of Urb were left in the darkness of abandoned hallways. Famished and sick, no longer visually resembling humans, these people began to huddle together in packs, desperately fighting for a semblance of life.

400 years later, the situation hasn’t changed drastically. That is, until your character, citizen KZ0012, recovers from a long-term stasis known as the Big Sleep. Riots in reservations, large-scale terrorist attacks — this is only a tip of the giant pile of problems that you will encounter on your journey.

Your life, and the lives of Object 6’s inhabitants, is about to change… on September 27th.
...
