We just wanted to give you a little insight into the Skill Tree for the Mea Culpa. Upgrading your sword will be key as you advance through the game, especially when you encounter quicker and more powerful foes. You’ll be doing a lot of denizen slaying, so you need the right tool(s) for the job.
To increase the power of your sword, you will have to visit Mea Culpa Shrines where you can spend Tears of Atonement to unlock new combat moves. Visiting additional shrines will increase the Mea Culpa’s strength and thus allow access to more powerful techniques. These can come in the form of extending your basic combo to downward thrusts with radius damage and more - but these will remain secret…for now.
This is in addition to the various Spells you can collect as well as Rosary Beads and Sword Hearts to augment your play style. Experimentation will be integral in your quest to rid Cvstodia of the terrible curse that afflicts it, as well as taking down the grotesque creatures in style!
As you venture through Cvstodia, there will be many secrets for you to uncover. These will range from collectables telling you more about the rich lore, to Rosary Beads and Spells. Some of these are hidden in plain sight, requiring you to obtain a certain something for you to collect them, and others will be behind breakable walls or other secret areas.
But remember, some of these items will not come without a fight.
Join us at 3pm BST / 7am PDT on Thursday 25th July for a Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair livestream! We’ll be showing off some of the alternate level states and have some of the dev team with us to answer your questions!
There are many mysteries to uncover in Cvstodia, but in order to find them all you will have to journey far and wide. We have to keep a lot of these places you must travel under a shroud of darkness for now, but we thought we’d shed some light on some of the hazards you will encounter.
Any good Metroidvania has disintegrating platforms and some areas of Blasphemous will have more than others. Falling from these could result in death or injury while others in the more vertical sections will set back your progress.
The Spike Pit. An oldie but a goodie. These require very little explanation and as you can see below, they will result in an instant, but thankfully quick death. Remember, dying will set you back to the last Prie Dieu so proceed with caution.
Certain areas will also come with their own hazards, environmental or enemy. When you’re not brutalizing the denizens of Cvstodia, you will be dodging traps, fireballs and more. Timing will be key in negotiating these sections with some of them populated by enemies to make them extremely punishing.
As part of the bloodletting in Blasphemous, you can trigger executions on most enemies. While these are not only essential in conveying the brutal combat and unrelenting world you find yourself in, they will give you rewards.
One ‘wheely’ good one you can see below:
Completing an execution will grant you an increase in Tears of Atonement to spend on abilities and items as well as rewarding you with extra fervor for spells.
You will only have a limited window to perform these successfully so remember, time is of the essence. Now chop, chop.
ICYMI: If your blood thirst still hasn't been satiated, IGN have seven minutes of Blasphemous gameplay, including one of the first boss fights, for your viewing pleasure!
In case you missed it, Game Designer Maikel Ortega sat down with IGN to talk about the development of Blasphemous and gave some new details on what you can expect!
We’ve had some amazing news today… Blasphemous has been nominated for ‘Best Platformer at E3 2019’! The team is very humbled and would like to extend our congratulations to all the nominees.
In other news, there have been a few questions regarding weapons in Blasphemous, so we thought we’d share some more information on your sword, the Mea Culpa.
Born from guilt itself, the Mea Culpa will not only be your main way to slay the grotesque and defend yourself against some terrible threats, it is key to traversing Cvstodia. It will help you in avoiding traps, navigating certain sections and to ascend the more vertical levels, as the GIF below shows.
It is fully upgradable, for a price of course, requiring Tears of Atonement to do so. These upgrades will not only come in the form of adding to your standard combo or unlocking new attacks, but there’s a few surprises lying in wait too!
You can also equip Rosary Beads that will add perks to the Mea Culpa, such as receiving extra rewards in combat, or destroying screen furniture, to extending your parry window and more.
