You can now make custom liveries for the steam engine and tender!
Though since steam locomotives are quite complicated there are two options for making a livery, either using the advanced model (with full control) or using a simpler model that makes placing a logo/texture on the side/front of the train much simpler and easier.
Here's what the simple option is like:
and here is the advanced option:
and here is the tender:
More liveries (like the big boy & coal wagon) will be coming soon as a 'part 2' to this update!
This update also includes a small fix to a bug that made smoke and wheels of steam trains visible when they should be hidden.
As i'm sure many of you will love, both steam engines now have animated wheels & wheel rods!
Here's a bunch of little features and fixes in preparation for custom liveries for steam engines:
Animated steam engine wheels
Both steam engines also have new unique whistles
You can now press Capslock (only on PC) while driving a train to sound the horn
Scale and height offset are copied when cloning a prop
Added a smaller level crossing prop that doesn't have a barrier arm & bells
Added a range of 'fake' signal props. They look just like the signals on the main layout but don't actually react to trains (this will be coming as its own update in the future)
Fixed missing audio on level crossings
Fixed broken tunnel mesh on one of the tight turn track pieces
Next week I'll be adding custom livery support for both steam engines! (the Big Boy and Marlborough Flyer) and after that ill be starting work on custom table building, which will be quite a big feature, and may take a bit longer than the usual update.
Today's update adds a bunch of nice features, along with a huge improvement to the train movement on custom track!
You have probably noticed "lurching" movement on long trains on custom track, where wagons would push/pull in weird ways, along with trains decoupling and derailing often. Well this has entirely been fixed! It was actually all being caused by a really simple issue, but now your trains should be smooth as butter.
Here are the other features included in this update:
Added new track color styles that you can paint track with (white concrete sleepers and black model railway style sleepers)
Added two new pieces of track with much sharper curves (excellent for tight helixes and tram lines!)
Improved collision on track pieces.
Planes will now show up in the sky on custom maps (just like the main layout)
Extended building space on custom layouts, which means scenery placed further outside the table will show up in miniature.
Added a palm tree that is paintable
The car and bus props are now paintable
The vineyard field prop is also now paintable
Fixed issues with connecting track to the ends of flexy track
Fixed error that caused a broken menu when trying to update a livery or layout
The next major feature to look forward to will be custom table shapes and modular table building, so get ready to make layouts in whatever shape you want!
But before then I'll be adding some smaller features like custom liveries on steam engines.
I'm sure everyone will be very happy about this one!
Today's update adds "gap filling" track, which can be used to easily (and smoothly) connect two dead ends of track. Gone are the days of frustratingly trying to line up track.
There are also a few other features:
"roll" angle on gradient track is gone, so you wont end up with twisted angles on your track (making a helix is now possible)
Added an "undo" button on the save menu, that will undo the last 'delete', 'save over' or 'quicksave' you did.
Added a "recover last session" button to the save menu, that will load the last map you left (either from quitting the game, going to the main menu, or loading a save by accident).
Added an option for "smooth" scaling when placing props, this makes scaling with the scroll wheel much more precise, and also allows for smooth scaling when using PageUp & PageDown. Turn this off for the original "snap" style, which has its own benefits
Fixed collision on the large rock props
Fixed issue with picking up and placing tunnel-painted track
Fixed trains decoupling on lag spikes (hopefully)
Enjoy! And have fun building tracks without the stress of misaligned track
Tunnels are finally in custom track! You can now build tunnels on your custom layouts along with a bunch of new terrain features and new props.
Some new prop placing controls have been added too. You can now use the scroll wheel (or pageup/pagedown or your "up/down" buttons in VR) while placing a prop to change its scale. This means you can freely change the scale of any custom object!
On PC you can also hold shift while placing a prop to change the height offset (also using the scroll wheel). this is incredibly useful for placing objects at a specific height, or building terrain.
You can make tunnels by "painting" track with the tunnel painter, much in the same way as painting colors and track styles. There are props for tunnel ends and individual tunnel segments (for more complex tunnels). you can also make double-track tunnels by manually placing larger tunnel segments.
There are quite a few new features in this update, so here is a full list:
Added tunnel painter and tunnel end props
Added ability to change prop scale (scroll-wheel while placing)
Added ability to change prop height offset (scroll-wheel + shift while placing)
Added "snap to angle" setting, which aligns props and track to 90 degree angles
Added a range of simple geometric shapes like cubes and ramps
Added multiple new paintable trees, rocks and terrain segments
Added some brown colored painters
Added collision to custom track at all times, and changed collision on some objects
Added "Clear all custom props" option, which deletes all props from a save, leaving only track (great for re-using the track from a previous layout)
Fixed bug where trains would float in the air if placed on certain track
Fixed bug which broke the workshop update menu
Fixed bug with object view distance setting on infinite causing invisible props
Items in your hands and on your belt are now not included in saves (this would always leave a pile of props on the floor where you saved)
Added options to enable/disable editing on the "global" region (areas outside of custom track tables). this is useful for building scenery on the main layout, or just anywhere outside of workbench space.
Enjoy!
In other news, I just did the Tranz Alpine rail journey here in NZ last weekend, and it was excellent. Future "Southern Alps" expansion will be coming one day without a doubt!
Today's big update adds the ability to create custom liveries for a range of locomotives and wagons! You can even share and download these liveries on the Steam workshop.
Making liveries is more simple than you may think, all it takes is basic image editing, and can even be done in MS Paint. Please see this guide for more information and instructions on how to create your own liveries!
Keep in mind you don't have to stick to the art style at all, feel free to use photo textures (as some already have) and you can make whatever you want. It can even be really fun to just paste your favorite images onto the side of trains!
Though liveries is the main focus, this update also includes a few other features:
Team fortress 2 style sprays have been added, so you can spray a custom image of your choice in-game. You can find and edit your spray in the "Modding" folder in your Rolling Line steam folder. If you are playing on PC, simply press 'T' to paint your spray. If you are playing in VR, then you can change your menu button to be used to spray under the "gameplay" menu.
Windows mixed reality is also supported automatically! you should no longer need custom launch arguments to play using WMR.
Enjoy! and lets see what kind of skins you can come up with!
Today's update makes some great changes to the wagon movement system. Movement is now much, much smoother. The jittering should be completely non-existent (ON THE MAIN LAYOUT). You will still see some jumps in movement on custom track though, but this is actually caused by the track itself, and needs an entirely different fix.
There are also many behind-the-scenes improvements to help fix wagon merging! If you were previously experiencing lots of merging then this update should hopefully vastly improve this (please let me know if you still run into problems).
Here are some other smaller changes: - Use trackpad/joy up/down in VR while placing track to change height. - All scroll wheel controls can now be done using pageUp/pageDown (e.g. if you have a laptop touch pad) - on PC your height is re-set when loading a save - fixed wagons freezing in mid-air after placing if time is paused - gradient track now shows up properly on the switchboard (with height angle)
Here's a simple implementation of gradient track! At the moment this is just a PC only feature (not in VR) that allows you to change the height angle of track using the mouse scroll wheel (while placing track).
This is only a quick implementation, and at a later date I will create proper curved gradient track pieces and support this feature fully.
Though as people seem very keen for even just a simple implementation like this, I decided to quickly add this to the game.
Today's small update adds a few improvements to the workshop system.
- you can now update existing workshop items, so you can overwrite a previously uploaded layout with a new one!
- you can preview the layout thumbnail and re-take the image as much as you want.
- you can choose the location that people will spawn in when playing your layout separately from the thumbnail, this can also be re-set as many times as you want.
and a few smaller fixes: - fixed a section of wall on the main layout that blocked a tunnel. - fixed the clip distance on the thumbnail capture camera. - made the "pointer" lines in VR nicer. - added multi-line text input for the layout description.
Please let me know asap if you spot any bugs while updating saves. Enjoy!
Steam workshop support has been added to Rolling Line! You can now upload, share and download other players layouts using the workshop.
Further down the line mods will be shared using the workshop as well, but for now it is just save sharing.
You can easily upload your saves in-game both in VR and on PC!
This guide explains the process of both uploading and downloaded layouts in detail.
Browse the workshop in Steam to subscribe to workshop items and download them, they will show up in-game on the main menu under "Workshop layouts".
This update also includes a few small changes:
- added some new background music tracks - full screen options moved to resolution menu. - fixed bug with hover UI being visible when it shouldn't. - fixed issue with loading save text with newlines.
If you have a save already in the "extra layouts" list, then upload it to the workshop too, as I'll eventually make the list much smaller and only show a few featured saves.
