Daddy: Hey Toby, can I get your help with some work please?

Toby: OK, but they might be disappointed I’m a cat.

This week on Steam Charts, my three-year-old son tells us all about the top ten grossing games on Steam. (more…)

I imagine in direct response to all my moaning insightful criticism, everyone in the world has upped their game and started buying some more interesting games from Steam. Such that this week’s Steam Charts, with an extraordinary four new entries, barely resembles those of the last couple of months! Hurrah! And you clickbait won’t believe clickbait where Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds falls this week! CLICKBAIT!

Valve have released a free version of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, although it’s more like a demo. As detailed in their latest patch notes, the free version of the ultra-popular esports FPS is limited to offline play only (including bots) and watching other players through their highly flexible GOTV spectator mode.

This update also permanently retires the old ‘legacy’ UI, in favour of the fancy new Panorama style, shown above, although this seems to be a point of some contention.

While other esports games continually rework and re-imagine themselves, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive moves slow and steady. New weapons and systems are tentatively introduced once in a blue moon, so it’s not surprising that its latest addition feels conservative. Absent since Counter-Strike: Source passed the torch to CS:GO, the now-silenced MP5 submachine gun is now available for use in offline, official casual and deathmatch modes, though Valve reckon it’s not quite ready for the competitive circuit yet.

Welcome to the Award Winning Steam Charts! Yes, you heard that right! I wrote “Award Winning”! It hasn’t technically won any awards, but since everyone can agree it should have, it seems like it would almost be lying not> to write it. But enough about how bloody brilliant I am, here are the top grossing games on your Steams this week. (more…)

Valve have rolled Counter-Strike: Global Offensive‘s shiny new user interface, named ‘Panorama’, out as the default after weeks of public testing. It’s light, it’s colourful, and it stops the game feeling weirdly business-like. I like it! CS:GO’s style felt like productivity software pretending to be fun, and this feels like a video game. It’s not all sunshine, mind, as it may run worse on older PCs and some players have reported crashes. Players can currently opt-out of Panorama to return to the old UI, but that option will be removed.

Imagine if games were really this pretty.

Words are ill-equipped to describe how dull this week’s Steam Charts truly are. Read on to see how I combat that. But also, thank goodness there’s at least the interesting feature that Plunkbat has, for the first time since it shot to the top of the charts on its release, dropped to third place. Its year-long grip on the top spot was beginning to waver in recent weeks, increasingly finding itself at #2 in the face of a big new release. Now its weakening dominance has seen it slip another spot down. Could Plunkles be seeing its rule coming to an end?
