Generation Zero® - SR_Carni
Greetings, Survivors!

Surprise! We just released an update focused on Quality of Life and stability - the Community Requests update! We’ve been working on this for a while and are thrilled to bring it to you today. Its contents are largely based on what we saw the community ask for. Of course, future updates will continue to bring features and changes requested by you all, but this was the perfect opportunity for us to pack some of them into one release.
Here’s what’s in the patch:

5th Anniversary Event

From now until April 14th, you can earn five brand new weapon skins by partying together with the machines in GZ!
Killing enemies next to an active boombox or radio has a chance of dropping one of these special skins. Time to dance.
Included skins:
  • Granatgevär m/49 - Whiplash
  • AG4 - BEPP Cola
  • AG5 - Ash of the Flesh
  • PVG90 - Splash Freak Custom
  • Kpist - Heavy Flash

Ping System

Bound to the G key / left bumper by default, a ping can be used to either mark a location or an enemy. If you mark a location, a general ping icon will appear. If you aim at an enemy, an exclamation mark will stick to the machine as it moves around. And the best thing is that your companion will try to move towards your ping or attack the machine it’s attached to! No more instances of you being unable to get out of a bunker room because your metallic friend is in the way, and no need for us to add “Lydia” to the pool of Companion names.

Buildable Companion Station

You can now build a Companion Station in your base! Switch out weapons, armor, names, and cosmetics on your best buddy - right from the comfort of your fortress.

Strategic Wood Piles

Many players have asked us for more and easier ways to gather wood to fortify their bases. We’ve added wood piles for you to find to 5 locations throughout Östertörn, each pile rewarding you with 4-8 wood. These are the places where you can find them:

  • Forest Worker’s Barracks, Archipelago
  • West of Granhygget
  • Leräng
  • Hjortqvarns Sågverk
  • Muskudden Port

Please keep giving us feedback around crafting materials, it’s the best way for us to keep improving crafting to make it fun to use!

Plundra storage limit increase
With this update, you will be able to upgrade your plundra all the way up to level 10, increasing your maximum storage available to 1,600. This is a change we were looking forward to making considering how many of you asked for more storage space to accommodate for the ever-growing loot pool in GZ! Thank you for your feedback.

Flakmoped Deployables

Deployable items such as boomboxes and gas canisters can now be placed directly in the tray of the Flakmoped. Unfortunately, you still won’t be able to fit the turrets from our Equipment DLCs on there as they’re too large, but this will make it much easier for you to act as a distraction or to lead the (explosive) charge!

Quality of Life
  • Your encumbrance level can now be seen in your HUD, making inventory management easier.
  • When accessing Augmentation for the first time, a tutorial for how it works will be displayed. This tutorial can be rewatched anytime in the Augmentation menu.
  • Increased the maximum amount of icons that can be displayed on the radar at the same time from 8 to 50. This will make it easier to follow missions with multiple objectives.
  • Increased the Companion’s resistance to fire damage. It will now take the Reaper longer to make hot dogs.

We hope you enjoy this update and are already putting our heads down working on the next update, which will contain new content again. Thank you for your continued support!

The Generation Zero Dev Team

Bug Fixes
Companion
  • Firework boxes no longer confuse the Companion
  • Fixed a bug where players could accidentally remove augmentations from weapons after putting them in the Companion’s inventory
  • Prevented the Companion from teleporting in front of vehicles while driving
  • Players will no longer receive Companion cosmetics as loot before completing "Making Friends"
Machines
  • Fixed a bug where a loud clicking sound would play when the player is near fighting machines
  • Fixed an issue where machines would be visible for the host, but not for clients. Please keep reporting issues with invisible machines so we can keep working on this!
  • [Community Reported] Fixed a bug where Firebirds would never spawn with the Tesla Coil or Thermobaric loadouts.
  • Gave the Harvester’s ability to spawn reinforcements a cooldown to free up bandwidth on the FNIX emergency frequencies
  • Fixed a bug where Harvesters would consistently drop 4 crown AG4s after completing the mission “An Invitation”
  • Fixed one issue causing machines not playing an explosion sound when dying during base assault. We know you love it when they go kaboom! Please let us know if the symptoms persist.
  • Removed an instance of players seeing an “Entered Combat” notification when they had not been spotted yet
Missions
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the generator in Procedural Missions from being refueled.
  • [Community Reported] Fixed an issue where no Command Tokens were awarded during Building Blocks, temporarily locking it from being progressed.
  • Gave the document in “Hogging Supplies” back its interactable glow. It’s its time to shine now!
  • Fixed multiple issues with “Clearing the Path” where the truck wasn’t moving, Calle was standing inside the truck, and the truck could be derailed by players standing in the way. Also, fixed one of the wheels having a square grey texture
UI
  • Fixed the stats display for the S21, which was showing the 5C version dealing less damage than the 4C version. This was never true in actuality.
  • Players can no longer store resources at the recycling station past the weight limit
  • Fixed an issue where the wrong inventory weight was shown after looting
  • Fixed a bug where previously looted items would sometimes stick to the cursor in future loot interactions
World
  • Fixed a multitude of floating rocks, textures, and props
Vehicles
  • Fixed motorbikes not being interactable while moving and after crashing
Stability
  • Fixed various “random during gameplay” crashes on all platforms
  • Fixed multiple crashes occurring when driving a vehicle
  • Fixed a crash when transferring items to the storage box on PlayStation
  • Fixed several crashes related to fast traveling to or exploring bunkers
  • Fixed a crash occurring when an explosion happens near the truck during “Clearing the Path”
Known Issues
  • NPCs can sometimes be invisible. This is circumvented by restarting the game and we are looking into fixing it with the next update.
  • [Community Reported] Safehouses might get lost when logging in. This is most commonly encountered on PlayStation.
  • Clients can crash when riding a motorbike in a densely populated area

Generation Zero® - SR_Carni
Greetings, Survivors!

Another year of surviving against the machine threat has passed and Generation Zero is turning 5 years old. We can’t overstate how happy we are that we’ve been able to support this game we love so much for such a long time, bringing you new content, quality of life, and of course bug fixes.
Let’s have a look at the last 5 years of development.

2019
From the initial release of the game in 2019 to two story DLCs and 30 major updates since, it’s fair to say that GZ has had an eventful journey. It’s hard to pick any single event to highlight as there were so many impactful releases that we’re immensely proud of.
The launch of the game was, as all game launches are, exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. We were so happy for players to finally get their hands on what we had been working on for three years.

The YouTuber IGP started a series on GZ right at release, which to this day is one of the biggest factors to making it a success. His support during the first few months and throughout the years after has had a tremendous impact and we can never thank him enough for it. If you’d like to check out his series on GZ, head here.
url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HahZwv3CQp0&list=PLVxH6E2fftreo-OiPWnysv3ABtxEbR2Lm&index=1

From the initial response, it was immediately clear that we had hit the mark when it came to atmosphere, sound design, and world building. On the other hand, it was also apparent that we had work to do when it came to stability and bugs, which we got on right away.
Within the first year, we released 10 updates bringing tons of fixes alongside new content like bicycles, the storage box, rivals, and experimentals.

In November, we even released the first story DLC, Alpine Unrest, which took players to snowy Himfjäll island and posed a new threat in the shape of Apocalypse class machines. We also switched the presentation of the inventory from a grid-based system to a list view to accommodate for the new items being added.

2020
In 2020, we slightly reduced the cadence of our updates, opting instead for bigger releases with longer periods of quality assurance. It was kicked off by the infamous April 2020 Update, which introduced an accidental change to machine AI that led to players dying left and right. To this day, we have a small and very vocal part of the community asking for the April difficulty to be added back to the game and who knows, maybe one day we’ll be able to take the time and effort required for such a huge change. It would certainly be fun to watch!<br>

2020 also brought the game’s second major story DLC with FNIX Rising. It revamped the South Coast region with menacing FNIX structures and had you establish further relationships with the Resistance, which was preparing to deal a major blow to the machines. This was also the glorious beginning of Melee Weapons!
November brought us the biggest bad in Östertörn so far, the Reaper Tyrant. Watching players having to adapt their tactics to defeat this new enemy and get the best loot (yes, you get better loot if you destroy it before it self-destructs) was so satisfying for us. It's exactly what we designed it for and we loved to see that the community enjoyed it as much as we did.

2021
2021 was a quiet year for Generation Zero. We added repeatable daily and weekly Assignments and the Resistance Update brought Base Building and Base Defense to the game. Sadly, there was a deep-rooted issue that was discovered in that update which delayed its release by multiple months for the Xbox community. This threw a wrench in the works of our development plans, but it wouldn’t be GZ without the computers rising up against their creators. Eventually, we were able to - once again - triumph over the machines and the Resistance Update arrived on Xbox just before the end of the year.

2022

We really picked up the pace again in 2022. Starting out with Landfall, the update that introduced Soviet machines as a new enemy faction, we kept our heads down and worked on features we had seen you request in our annual player surveys. In April, procedural base assaults gave you an ever-changing challenge and tons of new spots to build a base in. We overhauled the intro missions of the game, adding the NPCs Therese and Pontus to guide new players and introduce them to all the systems we had implemented over the years. Today, we couldn't imagine the game without them!

This was also the year when Neebs Gaming decided to pick up Generation Zero and film a series of hilarious antics, bringing a new audience to the game and smiles to the faces of hundreds of thousands - including the dev team. We’re so incredibly grateful to them for putting their unique spin on our game and showing it to the world. Their GZ video playlist can be found here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ8Eudogu1I&list=PL1Uou2DWH7IGNbXolZicwaFcztb9OOxgY

Fitting for a release around Halloween, we added yet another much-requested thing: A flying enemy - the Firebird. Feared for its high damage attacks and hard to hit weak spots, it instills fear in even experienced players to this day. Luckily, this update also introduced Motorbikes, a means to get away from the Firebirds (or towards them) faster and safer.

To round out the year, we had one more community request to answer: new Experimentals. With the experimental KVM-89, Revolver, and Älgstudsare, new ways of approaching combat were born. We especially loved players taking on the role of “mobile artillery” with the Älgstudsare, a dev-favorite playstyle (no, not because we’re bad at the game).

2023

This brings us to the year that brought you Guerrilla fighter’s best friend: the Companion. Fans and devs alike rejoiced when it was adopted in July 2023 and instantly spent hours getting it, customizing it, and taking it out for dangerous walks. While we sadly couldn’t give you free choice in naming your new buddy, we made sure to include lots of options for you to choose from and have been adding more since! If you have ideas for names we should add, please let us know. There can never be enough!

Eventually, winter time came around and we made sure to include two more updates before the end of the year. With the Guerrilla Research Update, weapon augmentation was made available and allowed each player to get even more in-depth in tinkering and tailoring their arsenal to their own playstyle. The most revered Augmentation Designs are (rather unsurprisingly) Life Stealing and Oversized Clip. Who doesn’t want to fire 500 rounds from an LMG and heal themselves with it?

Finally, we added a new mode of transportation - the Flakmoped. No longer just bound to riding alone, players formed mobile assault units with the combined fire power of a small country, getting flipped over constantly - having 4 players’ physics interact with the same vehicle at the same time is too much for a system where riding a bike into a pebble at 5km/h sends you flying.

2024 and on
So that’s it, the last 5 years of development! As any video game project, Generation Zero has had its ups and downs. We are extremely proud of the game it has become and the plans we have for it. All of this would never have been possible without the support of our beloved community - you!

Over 6 million players have joined the Resistance. You’ve destroyed machines and built the resistance. You’ve joined us during Dev Streams and created tons of content yourself. Many beautiful works of art have been created in honor of Generation Zero. You’ve also given us constructive feedback and stuck around to see us implement it over the years. Numbers cannot express the impact you’ve had on us and the game, but we can try to put it into perspective:

We are aware that having such a big player base is a huge privilege and also a responsibility. If you have been following us for the last few months, you’ll have noticed that there is a major focus on improving the stability and player experience of the game. These efforts will of course continue as we develop more content for you to play, starting with the next major update. We will keep supporting Generation Zero with new content, quality of life, and narrative in the future.
Thank you all so much for being the best community any game developer could ask for.

Special thanks go out to:
  • Our Discord moderators asidk9thorn, Dreguen, Hyäne, Major, Miles Lexicon, Rayleigh, Sgt Engee, and VioletThunder9. You rock.
  • Our Forum moderator Zesiir, for enhancing many Dev Streams with his presence and helping us keep the Forum a positive and constructive environment.
  • Our former moderators Ichi, Larz, Mirrin, Pronto, and Sanginius, for gracefully handling the influx of users during the Beta and at launch.
  • Tenebris Infinite and Wired Gaming for consistently covering GZ with YouTube videos and streams. Many would have been lost without your informative content!
  • All the dedicated artists who put time and effort into creating fanart, much of which adorns our office walls.

With all the love,
The Generation Zero Dev Team

Good day, Survivors!

Apologies in advance if my pun-game isn’t as on point as it usually is, I definitely didn’t just start writing this report at 3:30pm on a Friday because I’ve been buried neck-deep in preparations for the 5th anniversary event. We have so many things going on this month, let me remind you of a few things and also give you a small outlook on what to expect in the time leading up to and during the anniversary event!

Help us playtest a future project
We’ve started construction on a new game (no, it’s not GZ2) and we’re looking for people to help us test a super early concept so we can keep working on it with the Community right by our side.
That’s why we’re organizing several rounds of playtests taking place during the next few weeks. If you’re interested, are playing on Steam, and are over 18 years old (You’ll have to sign an NDA), please join this Discord server and read the instructions on how to sign up!

Steam Spring sale ongoing!
My boss told me to include this in the report so here we go: Something something get your friends in the game at 80% discount, yadda yadda both Story DLCs currently cost like 2$, go check out the Steam page to see the other amazing discounts. Here’s the link that you will please click because it will make my manager very happy:

5th anniversary event
On March 26th, it will have been exactly 5 years since Generation Zero was released into the wild. It’s been a crazy journey with lots of ups and downs, a journey that I was fortunate enough to experience from the very beginning until now!
We have a lot planned to celebrate this important milestone. There will be lots of giveaways during the whole week, a special livestream on the day, and many little tributes to everyone who helped bring us this far (including you). I highly encourage you to follow our social media so you don’t miss out on any of the goodies.

The next Update
The 31st patch for GZ is being finished as we speak. This means we’re ironing out the last issues and then we’ll submit it to the different platforms for certification before we can release it. Sadly I can’t yet say when exactly it’ll be released, but I can say that it’s called the Community Requests Update. As the name suggests, it will consist of several features and quality of life improvements that many of you have been asking for (some of them have been requested for a long time!) as well as many bug fixes.
I don’t want to spoil any of the features yet (if you read the last Resistance Report and have been following our different channels, you’ll have seen a couple of hints already), but here are some bug fixes I’d like to highlight:

  • “Clicking” sounds heard when near machines that are fighting each other
  • Companions teleporting in front of moving vehicles and crashing them
  • Unlimited 4C AG4 drops from Harvesters after doing “An Invitation”
  • Displayed inventory weight being inconsistent when looting
  • Tons of “random” crash fixes (and some not so random ones)

All of these issues and more will be fixed in this update. If any of their symptoms still persist, please let us know ASAP so we can look into smiting them once and for all.

Thank you for reading! This edition’s Swiss German Word is:
Chätschä (kind of like the english word “catch” but try to stretch out the c sound and append another a). It means to chew! A variation of this is “choie” (same elongated c sound).

Talk to you soon!

Greetings, Survivors!

I am so happy to say this: The 60FPS patch on PS5 is FINALLY out. I’ve talked before about how difficult it is to optimize any game for any console, and that is amplified by trying to make it run at a specific frame rate consistently. Feedback to the update has been super positive, which is so good to hear! We are glad to finally put this behind us and move on to our other plans for the year. So what happens now?

Our plans

The internal roadmap for 2024 is still under construction. This is mainly because we have a lot of things that we want to do and not enough time to do it all in this year, so we’re prioritizing and setting goals. Right now, our focus is on bringing you things that you (the players) have been asking for and that we haven’t been able to implement so far.

We’re already making great progress with the next update. It’ll be aptly titled “Community Requests Update” and we’re using it to introduce some much requested features and Quality of Life improvements. It’ll also come with another slew of crash fixes, stability improvements, and a fix for the new “clicking sounds” audio issue.

You may wonder “But Carni, what are those much requested features and improvements?” and for that, I got out my old poem writing skills (anyone remember the 3rd and 4th GZ anniversary on Discord?) to give you a hint towards one of the changes:

In every safehouse I can be found
In the corner, on the floor, or right there on the ground.
My goal is to help you and lighten your load,
In the past, though, often I just overflowed.
Now this update will have a good change inbound,
So you may run freer and longer around.

You may discuss the meaning of this with the class after the session.
We’ll talk more about what’s in the Community Requests Update all across social media soon, so be sure to follow them for some hints! I’ll be sure to make them extra cryptic.

Lunar New Year Event

In case you haven’t seen, the Lunar New Year event is still in full swing in Generation Zero!
You can get this amazing jacket (that’s not marketing speech, I just genuinely love the design) and a beautiful companion skin from Tanks, Harvesters, Firebirds, and Wolves. Also, you can get a new type of fireworks from containers like backpacks and suitcases.

Semla Event

On top of that, our annual Semla event is also currently active. You can loot the tasty treat in kitchens all over Östertörn and if you find 4 of them, you get a special hat.

Both of these events end on February 24th, so until then: Happy looting!

Thank you for reading this Resistance Report and I’ll talk to you again soon. In the meantime, please join the Discord server! It’s a cool place.
The Swiss German word of the day is “äuä” [ah-waah].
It’s mainly used in the canton of Bern, where our capital is, and is a way to express emotions like disbelief, discontent, surprise, or disappointment. The meaning depends on the intonation. Much like “huh”!

Toodeloo!

PlayStation and Microsoft will receive this version of the game along with the 60FPS patch very soon, we're just verifying it with the respective platforms.

* Fixed a crash that was accidentally introduced in the last Hotfix
* Fixed a crash that occurred when fast travelling to a field radio<br>
Please let us know about any remaining (or new) stability and crash issues.
If you'd like to read more on how we're handling these fixes internally, please read this Resistance Report from last Friday.

Generation Zero® - SR_Carni
Good day, Survivors!
Welcome back to the Resistance Report! I’m so glad to be back writing these in 2024.
Let’s get into the latest and (not so) greatest of what’s happening.

Crashes and how to find them
Many of you know that Generation Zero has always had difficulties with stability and performance. When you make an open world game with tons of machines roaming around, loot containers maintaining their contents, and explosions happening fairly often, it’s hard to make sure that game always runs smoothly. We missed that mark when Generation Zero was released back in 2019 and have been wrestling with the consequences of that ever since.

However, we are determined to get our game up to speed and we’ve been implementing tons of performance improvements as I’m sure you’ve noticed, especially on old gen consoles.
Crashes have also been reduced significantly (by about half) in the last couple of patches and there is less lag during combat and traversal.

This is where it gets tricky, though: Because we’ve been going deep into the code base and changing code that was written 6 years ago, other underlying issues are coming to the surface that have been “dormant” for most of that time.
That’s why after we released the initial hotfix, a specific subset of our Steam community playing on older CPUs started crashing before they even got into the game. We took that feedback and released another hotfix on January 23rd, but now many people on Steam are crashing randomly during gameplay whereas they never had any issues before.

Now, I know this is super frustrating to you. Even if you’re not directly affected by the crashes, reading about a new issue appearing so many times in such a short time span leaves a bad taste in the mouth of anyone who likes to enjoy their games in peace. I am asking you, though, to see this for what it is: a symptom of the fact that we are no longer putting band aids on our issues, but going deep and fixing them so they don’t break again in the future. In the long run, this will do wonders for the way the game plays as well as how easy it’ll be for us to identify any future problems. In the meantime, we will do everything we can to fix any new problems as fast as possible while also working on the 60FPS on PS5 patch.

I am super looking forward to getting our beloved game in a stable state so we can focus on working on new things for you to play. Follow the dev letters we release during the upcoming months as they will talk about some of what we’re working on!

The Swiss German word of the day is “cheib” (ch as in [x], or the noise your cat makes when coughing up a fur ball, and eib like the “ibe” in “tribe”). It’s a slang term for “guy” that does not exist in standard German!

Until next time, I’ve been
