As some of you might have noticed that a few players were unable to start the new Alpine Unrest mission chain. Since noticed, a fix has been the GZ team's highest priority. We are now publishing a patch on PC to solve this problem.

Patch Details:
  • Alpine Unrest mission chain issue is now fixed.
  • If playing the final mission of Alpine Unrest (The Resistance) as the client of someone else's game, if you left during the mission then the mission would disappear from your Mission Log and you'd be unable to get it back.

Today we’re proud to put into your hands our first expansion, Alpine Unrest! In order to bring you this substantial Update to the game, we needed to give it the appropriate amount of time. Work started a few months ago and was done in parallel with the other Updates we brought your way - with the aim to help set the stage for this release.

There’s a lot to go over this month, and not all of it is limited to the paid expansion. We have bug fixes as usual, but on top of that we also have some goodies that are readily found in Alpine Unrest making their way to Östertörn in a limited fashion. All-in-all this is a major achievement for the team and we hope you enjoy playing it as much as we did making it.


Now… the island of Himfjäll awaits.

New Expansion: Alpine Unrest
Alpine Unrest takes place on the island of Himfjäll, off the east coast of Östertörn. This former popular ski destination is now abandoned, waiting for you to explore it for equipment, weapons, answers to new questions, and more. The town consists of several key locations, including towns with cafés and shops, caravan parking lots, military bases, ski slopes, a burning church, and the massive ski hotel Björntunet.

On top of that, the new island also continues the story of Generation Zero, providing new missions and introducing you to new allies - a group of survivors who have managed to survive the machine invasion against all odds. But we can’t introduce new friends without also giving you new enemies, and that is where the Apocalypse Class comes in. This new tier of machine are the deadliest to date, utilizing horrible weapons like flamethrowers and biochemical guns to try and take you down. So make sure to be extra careful when moving around the island.

Lastly a new expansion would be nothing without new weapons, clothes, collectibles, and achievements. Alpine Unrest introduces Machine Guns to the game: the KVM 59 Machine Gun and KVM 89 Squad Automatic Weapon. Both of these will be excellent tools for fighting back. Additionally we have new outfits, new things to collect and of course, new achievements to unlock. So keep an eye out, you never know where they might be found.

Additions
But that doesn’t mean you’re safe on the mainland. While the Apocalypse Class machines cover Himfjäll, some have made their way over to Östertörn and may appear in select areas of the mainland, should you be unlucky enough to run into them. Thankfully, the new Machine Gun class of weapons we’ve introduced can also be found by all players. There is a twist though, you’ll have to defeat some of the new machines to have a chance to get them. But, new challenges bring new rewards - good luck!

General bug fixes that will come as a standard "free" update alongside the launch of Alpine Unrest follow below:

Weapons
  • Fixed an issue where the firing mode of an automatic weapon would be reset after attaching a weapon mod
  • Fixed an issue where there was no quality level shown for the AK47 extended magazines
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes the wrong weapon icon would be displayed while ADS then equipping another weapon
  • Fixed an issue where the equip animation for the already equipped weapon would play while equipping a new weapon
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes the M49 Rocket would appear back in your hand after reloading only 1 rocket
  • Fixed an issue where the reload animation for the Experimental M49 would clip into your face when reloading only 1 rocket
  • Fixed an issue where the Experimental M49 would automatically fire it’s second rocket when your character stood up after being knocked down in between firing the first and second rounds

UI
  • Fixed an issue where the yellow outline would persist on machines after unequipping binoculars
  • Toned down the distance the POIs were seen during the “Back on Track” mission
  • Fixed an issue where POIs were not shown for all machines you needed to destroy during the “To the Lighthouse” mission
  • Fixed an issue where the unlock icon was inconsistent on the locked door during the “To the Lighthouse” mission
  • Fixed an issue where there was no interact prompt for the bunker doors at the Mården bunker
  • Fixed an issue where destroyed blast doors had an interact prompt

Missions
  • Fixed an issue where “Behind the Curtain” was not unlocking / appearing in the mission log
  • Fixed an issue where “A Wrench in the Works” was not unlocking / appearing in the mission log after completing all missions
  • Fixed an issue where the bunker doors during the mission “The Old Guard” were not recognizing players correctly
  • Updated the mission item asset to show a map as well as a transcript for the “Total Defense” mission
  • Fixed an issue where the mission item “Håkan Petersson’s Journal” did not appear in the mission log for the mission “To the Lighthouse”
  • Fixed an issue where the mission “The Hunter” would become blocked if you picked up mission items before you were on that step of the mission

Challenges
  • Fixed an issue with the “Abandoned Places” path would not complete even though you completed the “Behind the Curtain” mission

Characters
  • Fixed various apparel issues, including the Antarctic Jacket making it impossible to load into the game
  • Polished various reloading animations

Machines
  • Fixed an issue where Runners and Ticks would slide after performing a melee attack
  • Fixed an issue where Hunters and Ticks would sometimes change direction when performing a melee attack
  • Fixed an issue where Ticks would sometimes spawn outside houses instead of inside
  • Fixed an issue where if a Tank’s machine gun was destroyed by the fire damage from the AG4 rounds, it would still shoot
  • Fixed an issue where Hunter shotgun flechettes would stick into your character and remain there until they exploded
  • Fixed issues with the Rival history information not updating correctly in certain circumstances
  • Fixed an issue where machines destroyed by a friendly deployable tick would not add to your combat stats or Challenges

World
  • Fixed an issue where machines would sometimes spawn on top of an underground area (ex. bunker) instead of inside it while in multiplayer.
  • Fixed an issue where you couldn’t shoot through gaps in the wood in certain sheds
  • Gave the duplicate church names for Boo and Angerås their proper names
  • Fixed an issue where machines weren’t spawning properly near the Norrmyra Artillery Base
  • Players will now take gas damage properly, and can die from it, instead of stopping at 25 health
  • Cleaned up tons of small environment bugs; ex. Floating objects, geometry tears, odd collision points, flicker decals, etc.
  • Fixed an issue where the map coordinates were displaying the wrong values
  • Fixed a bike spawn issue at the Järvhålan safehouse

Localization, Voice-Over, & Audio
  • Fixed an issue where the VO and text would only play for the player who picked up a mission item
  • Fixed an issue where if you had completed the mission, the mission item VO from the “Calling for Help” would always play once you started the game
  • Fixed an issue where VO lines could get stacked up and then all play on top of each other during the “Behind the Curtain” mission
  • Fixed an issue where VO lines would repeat and get mixed with an explosion sound during the “Behind the Curtain” mission
  • Increased the volume of the Challenge completion fanfare sounds
  • Several small wording fixes for missions, mission items, and UI prompts
  • Outdoor ambience portals. Outdoor weather is now audible through open doorways and broken windows, and transitions between indoors and outdoors work better

Crashes
  • Various crash fixes, including a crash fix for when items were attempted to be put in a full Storage Box

Alpine Unrest ($7.99/€7.99) picks up the story one month after you first landed on the beaches of Östertörn, and takes you to a new as-yet unexplored island, Himfjäll.

Himfjäll offers new areas and locations to explore in this formerly popular ski resort. You can scout for machine activity from atop snow-covered ski-slopes, or scavenge the derelict cafes and shops for supplies.

The centerpiece of the island is the hotel, Björntunet. Having previously been abandoned during the machine invasion, it’s recently been reinhabited by new “guests”; although these visitors look to want to stay for more than just a weekend trip.

Hi all!

We just wanted to let you know that things are getting a little spooky during your struggle against the machines, and for a limited time there are some special item drops that you can find out on your scavenging runs. No tricks here, just treats!

From today up to November 4th machines can drop some Halloween inspired clothing items, so do your best to get out there and grab them all (there’s 4 sets to collect) before the event wraps-up! And of course, don’t forget to share your new outfits with us on social media.

We are pleased to announce that the Rivals Update is now LIVE! Please continue reading below for the patch notes.

The October Update brings 2 big additions to Generation Zero that we’re excited to put in your hands! In this update we’ve put more of our focus on adding in new things vs. pure bug fixing, but as always we will continue to tackle some every update. Take a look at the Patch Notes and drop us your feedback so we can tweak to make the game better for you!

New Feature: Rivals
Whether you’ve beaten the game or are just starting out new, Rivals will add a whole new type of challenge for all of you out there. As you fight your way through Östertörn the Machines will start taking extra notice as you destroy more and more of them. Destroy enough and one may evolve to become even more dangerous than usual. These Regional Rivals will be designated by a name and a title that hints at the origin of their evolution. Rivals can additionally be created should they defeat you - these Personal Rivals will have evolved due to their prowess in combat against the humans. Like the Regional Rivals, Personal Rivals will also be designated by a name and title that corresponds to their exploits.

But the threat doesn’t end there. How you perform in the world has an impact on how the Rivals evolve even further. Should your Rivals defeat you again, or should you defeat loads of other machines, they will earn experience and level up. Each level makes them that much more deadly - at max level it’s definitely best to think about bringing friends!

New Gear: Experimental Weapons
What are new threats without new rewards for taking them out?! To match the challenge involved in taking out Rivals, we’ve created a new tier of weapon for each weapon class that have a chance to drop when you defeat them. As the Rivals get stronger, the better chance you have to get your hands on these powerful weapons. One thing you’ll immediately notice about the weapons is that they look like a mashup of existing weapons and the technology used by the machines - so as you can imagine they are a bit different and more powerful than your standard weapon.

These weapons include:

  • Experimental Klaucke 17 - Has a chance to trigger a small EMP explosion

  • Experimental AG 4 - Can set machine components on fire due to heated bullets

  • Experimental Pvg 90 - Adds a railgun upgrade that increases muzzle velocity and penetration, allowing you to hit multiple enemies with one shot

  • Experimental 12G Pump-Action - Features flechette rounds that will explode when armed

  • Experimental M/46 "Kpist" SMG - Includes an overdrive function that dramatically increases the fire rate

  • Experimental Grg m/49 - Launches 2 grenades in the same burst

Emotes

  • Added 4 new emotes for everyone to enjoy!


Weapons

  • Corrected an issue on PC where modifying controller settings could make it impossible to switch to the pistol when using keyboard.
  • Fixed an issue where some (mainly the Granatgevär m/49) weapons did not play hit effects when hitting water.
  • Hits from the Granatgevär m/49 should no longer always display its explosion and soot effects upwards.
  • Fixed an issue where hits from the Granatgevär m/49 were not playing the correct material effect.

Missions

  • Fixed mission item for “The Gas Factory”.
  • Corrected mission markers for the “Lone Wolf” mission.
  • Fixed an issue where several dialogues could sometimes be played simultaneously during the final mission.
  • “Enemy of My Enemy” now correctly appears in the mission log.


Loot

  • Fixed an issue that could cause ammo boxes not to populate loot for clients in multiplayer games.
  • Tweaked loot tables to correct an issue with clients in a multiplayer game sometimes getting too much loot.

Machines

  • The Hunter’s flechette shotgun now has a projectile spread as intended.


World

  • Various tweaks to floating/misplaced world props/assets.


Animation

  • Corrected an issue that could cause thrown items to remain displayed in the hand after being used.


Map

  • Relay beacons now show on the map legend.


Crashes

  • Multiple crash causes located and fixed.

Hi all,

it's September Update time! Challenges arrive, as well as our typical push for bug-fixing. We hope to see you out there completing those Challenges and showing off the rewards you’ve earned along the way! Take a read over the Patch Notes and hit us with feedback so we can keep improving the game!

New Feature: Challenges
For some time you’ve been asking for more “stuff to do”, and now we’ve put in some solid months of bug-fixing behind us we can now take the first small step in that direction with the addition of Challenges!

Challenges are a set of goals that reward you for activities carried out in the world of Generation Zero, as of now there are two “trees” to choose from. The Resistance path tasks you with various activities centered around your fight-back against the machines, for example you may be asked to destroy X amount of high-tier Hunters. The Truth path is centred on your progress through the story of Generation Zero and rewards you as you pass various milestones.

In terms of rewards, we have something new to talk about here! For the first time you can now use an in-game title for your character. Each challenge is made up of multiple tiers, as you complete each tier more often than not you are rewarded with a title, this can be chosen on the challenge page by selecting your desired challenge and hitting “Enter”. The final reward in the larger (5 goal steps) challenges, in addition to your title, also rewards a special item for you to equip. The team has had a lot of fun here with some of the designs, with some really cool things to unlock, so we hope you enjoy using them as much as we did creating them!

And then finally you also accrue “Prestige Points” as you complete challenges. You can think of these as “bragging rights”, a way of showing how you’ve mastered the game to your friends or multiplayer guests.

Again, this is just the first step for us in filling out your requests for more activities in Generation Zero, and we hope you have a lot of fun with it! The Challenge system has been designed to be expandable, and we’d love to add even more trees/goals as time goes on. Of course we should add that we’re also cooking up even MORE things to do in Generation Zero, outside of the Challenge system, but more news on that next month. ;)


Bug Fixes

Audio
  • Corrected issue that would cause VO from mission “Enemy of My Enemy” to incorrectly play at game start.
  • Corrected issue that could prevent the “out of ammo” sound effect from playing as intended when reaching the end of a magazine.
Crashes
  • Multiple crash causes located and fixed.

Enemy Behavior
  • Corrected issue that would prevent the Harvester from entering its “Defensive Mode”.
  • Fixed Hunters going into incorrect ready pose when using shoulder-mounted weapon.
  • Sniper-rifle equipped Hunters now correctly align their laser targeting to players before firing.
  • Explosive Ticks now correctly use their explode attack when attacking sticky-flared enemies.

Environment
  • Corrected lighting issue at Ibolholmen Church Tower.
  • Corrected “invisible doors” at Fårudden Radar Mast.
  • Fixed terrain issue at Muskudden Bunker Complex that could prevent players from walking over it.
  • We had two safehouses with the same name. Fixed!

Graphics
  • Corrected blurry character hair and front wheel that could occur when riding bikes.
  • Corrected issue that could cause stuttering when cancelling ADS whilst standing still.

Localization
  • Added extra localization for skills menu.
  • Special character should now correctly display in the UI.
  • Corrected some inconsistencies with ammo name localization.
  • Resolved issue that would cause English to revert to Swedish audio settings after restart.

Missions
  • Corrected so that the icon for the key now shows as intended on “Loud and Clear”
  • Clarified mission objective text for “Out Hiking”.
  • Added extra Place of Interest (PoI) location for “A Wrench in the Works”.
  • Added PoI for “Behind the Curtain”.
  • For the Intro Mission corrected issue that could cause Bengt’s Handwritten Note to be invisible.
  • Clarified naming of related safehouse for “On the Road”.
  • For “Over and Out” the radio mission object now correctly appears in the log.
  • The starting mission item now correctly shows in the log for “The Enemy of My Enemy”.
  • Corrected placeholder text on “To the Lighthouse” mission item.
  • Mission items for “Unbearable Lightness” now correctly have 3D models.
  • Fixed an issue that could make the mission “Woodcutter” uncompletable.
UI
  • Some ammo types had no 3D model when viewed in loot containers/inventory. Fixed.
  • Corrected issue that would prevent switching between Main/Side mission tabs if the slider was not at the top position.

Items
  • Corrected disorientating “zoom” effect that could occur when changing stance whilst ADSing with a weapon scope.

Safehouses
  • Some safehouses previously did not have stash/bike stations. Now all safehouses should be equipped with both.

Hi there folks!

Our next update is coming to you very soon and with it we’re introducing the new Challenge system! With Challenges, we aim to provide you with additional goals in the game that reward you for your time.

So - what exactly are the Challenges? For its first iteration, the Challenges will be split up into two types that tap into different aspects of the game. “Truth” challenges will reward you for completing both Main and Side Missions. “Resistance” challenges will center around your ability to destroy the swarms of Machines roaming Östertörn.

And those rewards we mentioned? A mix of some amazing new outfit pieces as well as a brand new feature - Titles! Different accomplishments will grant you unique titles, which you can use to celebrate your victories. Did you kill a whole bunch of ticks and become “The Eradicator of Parasites”? If so, now everyone knows it! On top of that we’re introducing Prestige Points so you can brag to friends about how many overall challenges you’ve completed.



These Challenges are the start of something we can continue to expand on over time and can adapt based on your feedback. We hope you enjoyed this quick preview of what’s to come and we’re excited to hear what you have to say once you get your hands on the update next week.

We have just deployed a hot-fix that will address the save-game issue introduced with Hot-fix 1.5.2 earlier today. Your save files will now be present and correct in the right location, and you can play as normal.

Apologies for any confusion or inconvenience caused by that issue during the short time it was active.
