best-vr-games

Here they are then – the best games to play in virtual reality…and those games are “watching football,” “drinking”, “a nice cup of tea”, “fleeting emotional connection to another human being” and all those other everyday activities you believe to be real, as opposed than a simulation you have been experiencing since you first plugged your frail, mollusc-like form into a headset 19 years ago. SPOOKS!

But, should you persist in maintaining this fantasy, let’s go one level deeper and talk about the entertaining, satisfying or otherwise nifty games available for what is the current VR state-of-the-art in your imagined world: the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. The rival headsets are getting on for a couple of years old now, and in that time there’s been what can feel like a ceaseless storm of new games for them. How to choose, how to choose? Well, start here. These are not the only> good’uns, please understand – but they are our favourite virtual realities right now.

EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone - EVE: Valkyrie Official

A warm welcome to pilots new and old. My name is CCP TerrorShark, Game Designer on EVE: Valkyrie, and I’m here to talk you through the new Extraction game mode we’re introducing in the upcoming Warzone expansion.

For the last few months, CCP Badhorse and I have been responsible for bringing you unique and twisted Wormhole events every weekend, building game altering modifiers, modes and maps with help from our incredible creative community. Check out our Building Wormhole Thread.

It was from the no-holds-barred, frantic chaos of Wormhole gameplay that the seed of Extraction was sewn. A high intensity, clutch play, edge of your seat battle that caused screams and cries across the Valkyrie office during our internal playtests.

It was too much fun not to deliver to you, our legendary pilots!

Overview – The story so far

Our Quartermaster has a task for you; a mission of the utmost importance. The Drifters, an ancient race of technologically superior beings, have discovered and cloaked ‘Relics’ across the galaxy; orbs containing secrets of our past and keys to the future of Valkyrie warfare. It’s your job to find these Relics and deliver them back to our mysterious friend in one piece, through strategically placed Smuggler Gates.

Extraction Mode is about healing, pushing, boosting and blasting your way to the finish line, delivering the Relic to the Smuggler Gate drop zone by any means necessary. It’s a team sport that requires collaboration and coordination if you’re going to come out on top.

At its core, it’s split into two phases: capture and delivery.

Game Phase One: Capture – The Scramble.

Every match begins with the Relic appearing dead center in the map. Sitting equidistant from both carriers, the big prize is up for grabs to the first pilot who dares push out from the crowd and take it.

The Relic, however, is a powerful and mysterious object, and carrying it does come with some consequences. Its added weight and radiant core will cause your capacitor to burn at twice the standard rate. That’s going to make your ship 50% less efficient on that long run to the drop-off point, so use your boost wisely. Use it all to make the pick-up and you’ll have nothing left for the delivery. The best Extraction pilots will balance and manage resources perfectly.

Game Phase Two: Delivery – The Dangerous Path

Now we have three possibilities here, either you picked up the Relic, one of your teammates picked up the Relic, or (worst case scenario) the enemy have picked up the Relic! We have different missions, goals and objectives depending on how the pickup went, so let’s take a look at a few scenarios.

You got the Relic!

Congratulations pilot. You’re the fastest runner in the pack, you put it all on the line and came out on top. But now your entire team is relying on you to get the package to the drop-off point. No pressure! You’ve painted a HUGE target on your back and every enemy wants to tear off a little piece, until you’re nothing more than dust particles and a faint memory. Pick a good flight path, use the environment and work with your team to get across the finish line by whatever means necessary.

Your Team got the Relic!

You missed it this time round but one of your incredible teammates has picked up the slack. The drop-off site is half the map away and your teammate’s burning through capacitor fast! “Assist me!” comes the call across your comms, this pilot is in serious need of your help, and it’s your job to get them there. Shoot down enemy pursuers in the Assault, brute force them out the way in the Heavy or heal your teammate to victory in the Support. Having a range of classes at your disposal is key to your chosen runner making the delivery in one piece.

The enemy captured the Relic!

The opportunity slipped through your fingers and the enemy snapped up the Relic from right under your noses. It’s all hands on deck, pilot. You and your team must do everything in your power to destroy that enemy ship and stop it reaching the drop zone. Keep the target in sight at all costs. Disrupt, damage and destroy, just don’t let them get away from you! The Quartermaster rewards only those who deliver.

Sign off.

So, that’s a little teaser of what’s to come in Extraction when it arrives alongside a host of other new features in Valkyrie: Warzone on September 26. It’s available to play across all of our classic maps as well as the two new environments you can hear more about with @ccpStarbug [Link blog]

See you in the skies, Relic hunters!
EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone - EVE: Valkyrie Official

It started out in VR, but now EVE: Valkyrie has been reborn as the ultimate cross-platform, cross-reality first-person space shooter. No longer do you need an Oculus Rift, Vive or PSVR to take part in epic online space battles; as long as you have a PC or PS4 then EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone is ready and waiting for you to climb into the cockpit.

And there's more to Warzone than simply letting the flatscreen folk join in the six degrees of zero-g fun; this is a major upgrade with some radical changes that you need to know about, whether you're a first time rookie or a battle-hardened veteran. So hold tight as we take you through what you can expect to be doing in your first hour in the Warzone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2IDv_4REpU

Training

Newcomer or old hand, we heartily recommend heading straight to Flight School when you start up Warzone for the first time. If you've been playing the game for a while then we'd also suggest taking your VR headset off (even if it's only for a moment!) so that you can see how Warzone looks and feels on flatscreen, and with a mouse and keyboard if you're playing on PC. After all, you're better off getting acclimatized now rather than later on when the stakes are higher.

While the controls in Warzone are mostly the same as before, there are a few slight changes that you'll need to adjust to, and Flight School's the perfect place to do it. Basic training won't take you long to complete, and afterwards you can carry on with some more advanced training missions, which we'd recommend if this is your first time in the world of Valkyrie. Alternatively, you can head straight for the Proving Grounds to get in some proper trigger time.

Your first reward capsule

First though, you'll have noticed that once you completed Flight School, you'll have been rewarded with a lovely capsule full of loot. These are a new feature of EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone, and you can expect to pick up plenty of them along the way as you rank up and complete daily challenges. Each capsule contains a random mix of XP-boosting implants, ship-specific paint jobs and decals, pilot suits and helmets, as well as cold hard in-game currency that you can spend however you wish. So don't hang about; head for your vault to crack open your first capsule and check out your prize!

Check out the fleet

Done with training? It's time to hit the Proving Grounds, but first you'll need something to fly. So now's the time to discover Warzone's shiny new fleet, and discover another change that's come to EVE: Valkyrie. Rather than having ships drip-fed to you as you level up, in Warzone the entire fleet of 13 ships is available to you right from the start, so you'll want to spend a bit of time checking out what's on offer.

Instead of three classes, Warzone has four – Assault, Heavy, Support and Covert – and you'll notice that each ship within a class is radically different to its stablemates. That's a deliberate design choice in Warzone; rather than pick and choose based on minor variances in ability, you'll instantly be able to identify the ship you need for a particular scenario. Take, for example, the Assault class; its four ships can be categorized in a way similar to the main weapons you'd use in an FPS. There's the Wraith Mk6 as an assault rifle, the Jackal as a shotgun, the Strix as a sniper rifle and the Yurei as an SMG; we're sure you've already decided which one you want to try out first, right?

Into battle

And so off we go to the Proving Grounds, to fight against a mix of bots and other novice pilots until we hit level 5. It's another great chance to appreciate how well Warzone plays on flatscreen – even if you're used to being able to look around the cockpit, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see how situational awareness doesn't suffer – and to get to know Warzone's two new maps: Fleet, the massive Sisters of EVE space station, and the mysterious Outpost, a fog-shrouded, lightning-dappled Drifter base. Don't get too over-awed by it all, though; you need to get some kills in to start leveling up. Then when you make a kill, be sure to grab the salvage dropped by your broken enemy; it'll speed up the recharge on your Ultra abilities, another new Warzone enhancement that, when timed correctly, can turn the tide of battle.

Ship upgrades

As you fight your way out of the Proving Grounds and into matchmaking proper, you'll earn XP on a per-ship basis that you can then use to unlock ship upgrades. Because while the basic ships are a joy to fly, they're even better once you've started modifying their abilities to suit your fighting style. You can choose your own upgrade path – meaning that after a few rounds of enhancements, each of your favorite ships will have become a unique space killing machine that fits you like a proverbial glove – with four types of upgrade available: Attack, Defense, Mobility and Tech. Most upgrades are tradeoffs with a small net benefit – that is, you might gain a 20 percent fire rate increase at the cost of a 15 percent damage reduction per shot – so choose wisely.

The hangar

One way to personalize your ship is through upgrades; another, more visible way, is with paint jobs and decals. You can get your hands on these through Loot Capsules, or simply buy them with your hard-earned silver. We're certain you'll want to stamp your personality on your favorite ship before the first hour's done and dusted.

Onwards!

Is that an hour already? Well, they do say that life in New Eden rarely stands still. Here, then, is where we sign off, but for you the journey's barely begun. It's time to get back into the cockpit and into battle, and discover everything else that's new about EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone, including the Extraction mode. See you on the leaderboards, and fly safe

Discover the Covert class

EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone comes with a whole new fleet of ships to get to grips with. Most of them should feel reasonably familiar to you, but we've also introduced a whole new class that's going to change everything, and you need to know what it's about. So be sure to familiarize yourself with the sneaky new Covert class with this helpful video guide, and if you need a refresher on the other ships, we also have guides for the Assault, Heavy and Support classes; check them out for an instant advantage!

Double XP weekend

We understand that a lot of you have jobs and other commitments that are going to make it tricky to devote much time to Warzone before the weekend, but don't worry because we've lined up a plan to make things extra-special when you finally get to plug yourself into the game properly. From 10:00am GMT / 5:00am EST on Friday, 29 September to 10:00am GMT / 5:00am EST on Monday, 2nd October, all Valkyrie pilots – from fresh-faced newcomers on PS4 and PC through to the hardy veterans in their VR headsets – will receive Double XP from every mission they fly. So if you're frustrated at flying a desk all week, you'll be able to hit the hangar running as soon as you clock off on Friday.

Wicked Warzone Wormholes

This weekend's Double XP aside, you know what else is great about weekends? Wormholes, that's what. We know how you love Wormhole events, where the rules get changed around to provide a unique new twist on EVE: Valkyrie's space combat experience, and we'll be carrying on with the fun in Warzone.

You'll find the best of the pre-Warzone mods - such as single ship-type modes, rainbow trails, friendly fire, super-boost, and even more mines - in the mix, as well as a whole load of new modes, upgrades and modifiers. We've dropped some of the less exciting modifiers, and even incorporated some old Wormhole features into the regular game – check out the Wraith Mk6's new Ultra ability!

Best of all, we've created two brand new Wormholes especially for the first few weeks of Warzone, designed to introduce you to some of the new features; keep your eyes peeled for more information from CCP Badhorse later in the week.

Got a question about Warzone? As always the dev team is around to answer your questions and chat about Warzone in the forums, and for launch week we're hooking you up with two AMAs on Reddit as well as a developer livestream. You'll be able to find associate producer CCP Bosun and CCP Roo in /r/PS4 on 25 September and lead designer Andrew Willans (CCP Roo) in /r/gaming on 28 September, plus you can catch our livestream, direct from CCP Newcastle, on 26 September with CCP Redcape.

In true EVE: Valkyrie community spirit, Lead Game Designer CCP Roo will also be jumping on a stream with legendary streamer Salsa Ketchup at 2GMT on Friday for some Warzone shennanigans.

Tune into the community streams

Sore thumbs? Stuck at work? Still jonesing for a taste of Warzone? We've got you covered. We'll be hosting awesome community streams all week on the CCP Twitch channel and over at plus10gaming. Hit both sites for details, then tune in, win prizes, pick up some useful tips and have fun!
