Weekly Report #6 - SA80 Assault Rifle

Ten-hut!

Some of us may be busy with major fixes, improvements and optimization but that doesn’t mean we won’t have the time to introduce a whole host of new toys for you to play with. So get some tea and dig in because today we’ve got something special: The famous (or infamous, depending on who you ask) SA80, used by the British Army as the L85 and a multitude of variants. This long-requested weapon is just a single part of the British set we’ll be introducing in the Warzone Update, with a new vehicle and uniform to follow, so stay tuned for more news on that in the future! And now let’s check out the new gun!

It was designed in the 70’s with a strong influence of earlier, late 40’s experimental constructions (the EM-1 and EM-2 rifles), featuring a bullpup design, integrated optics and using a new, experimental 4.85x49mm round. Trials began in 1976, but NATO standardization attempts forced the weapon to be rechambered for the 5.56x45mm round. The new prototypes entered trials in the late 70’s and were adopted as the SA80 in 1985 in three versions: L85A1 (rifle), L86A1 (light support weapon) and the L98A1 Cadet GP Rifle.

https://youtu.be/CYLfQj8sTCs

In the first years of the weapon’s service, a number of major faults were found, but it wasn’t until the Gulf War when the scale of the issues became clear - The rifle’s performance was disastrous. Troubled development and major production quality issues resulted in an unreliable weapon prone to break, jam and overheat on an almost daily basis, among a plethora of other problems. Tasked with fixing its issues, the German company Heckler & Koch created the A2 version, which greatly improved upon the A1 in almost every manner possible; The SA80 became very effective and reliable, especially famed for its great accuracy. Unfortunately, the bad reputation stuck, and the gun is still commonly considered sub-par even today, regardless of its quality.

In World War 3, instead of focusing on any given variant, we opted to give you the very base weapon - SA80 - which you can configure to fit a number of different playstyles and preferences. A very high rate of fire makes it versatile at short ranges, but thanks to its excellent accuracy (one of the best among assault rifles) and great bullet ballistics (fastest rifle projectile thus far at a whopping 980 m/s) it performs well in a marksman build with a scope and a bipod. Equipped with a drum magazine it can become a very effective medium- to long-range light machine gun akin to the L86.

Be wary of SA80’s heavy recoil which makes fire control a must. Remember: Short controlled bursts! It’s also quite heavy, so it’s more likely you’ll be creating loadouts around this weapon rather than using it as a backup. Lastly, bullpup weapons are infamous for their unpleasant, “creepy” triggers, and that is reflected in a slightly bigger delay between bursts in the 3-round mode. This change was also applied to the MSBS-B.

This is not the only new weapon in testing - We’re currently balancing multiple new guns, some of which are game changers that already gathered considerable fanbases. Stay tuned, there’s more where that came from!

Cherrio!

Weekly Report #5 - Attack Helicopter Drone

Ten-hut soldiers!

Those who track the development of World War 3 know that during the last few months we’ve been concentrating on heavily requested bug fixes and optimization improvements.
But we all know that those are not the goodies you are counting on. Lately, we’ve been working on something really exciting and this entry is just the first of many novelties we have prepared for you which will add a breeze of fresh air… literally.

You, the community, have been without a doubt vocal about adding new flying vehicles. We’ve been tinkering with the flight model and we’ve decided to add a strike that will meet your demands and populate the domain that has been previously dominated only by buzzing drones - the sky.

Introducing to you - Attack Helicopter Drone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gsvPO1tjKk
The Helicopter Combat Drone was inspired by the Northrop Grumman’s MQ-8C Fire Scout - an unmanned helicopter designed to support U.S. Navy operations. Its main duties are: reconnaissance, situational awareness, aerial fire support and precision targeting support for ground, air and sea forces. Its shell is based on a civilian helicopter to resemble a manned vehicle.

In World War 3, Helicopter Combat Drone is an airborne counterpart of Unmanned Ground Vehicles. It provides unique combat possibilities and forces the enemy to rapidly adapt tactics to a new threat. It utilizes space on the maps which has never been used before. Its superior agility and speed allow to swiftly reach the destination, barrage it with rockets or bombs, and fly away without giving the foe a slight chance to react. Once called, the enemy has to stay alert as it can strike from unexpected directions.

Large selection of attachments gives the player various ways to play it: equipped with thermal cameras, it can shine as a reconnaissance drone. With medkits, ammo, and equipment packs attached, it is the fastest support station in the game. Lethal OFAB bombs combined with rocket pods make it perfect for hit & run operations.

However, despite the excellent manoeuvrability and intimidating armament, Helicopter Combat Drone is far from being invincible. Its thin armor makes it vulnerable to all kinds of projectiles. Due to loud rotors and significant size, it's very easy to spot, so expect a lot of enemy attention while operating in the combat area. Also, be aware of the jammers as staying too long in a jammed area may lead to loss of your precious strike. Nevertheless, if battered, it can be repaired at the standard regeneration platform just like other vehicles.

With all that said, we can’t wait to see it in action.

See you in the warzone and… watch the skies.

Dismissed.

Weekly Report #4 - Warzone Giga Patch is coming!

Hello, Soldiers!

We’ve decided to share with you some more details regarding World War 3 future updates, just so everyone is up to date and knows what to expect. Because fixing bugs and boosting performance is our top priority, we also want to share with you our thoughts about what’s going to be next. So, without further ado, here we go:

First? Bugfixes!
Our technical and testing crews are focusing on fixing bugs and crashes. We are improving WW3 every week (and by the way – massive thanks to our community testers, you are really making a difference!). Last week’s PTE patch is another step in the right direction of stability, with an extremely low amount of crashing reported. We will also take care of the most prevalent and biggest bugs and issues we have to make sure the game is as playable as possible. This, of course, doesn’t mean that nothing new will be added, just that the focus is somewhere else – on making sure it works. We are planning to release the next big patch (0.5) to the public around the end of March.

Warzone Giga Patch
Next on the list is the Warzone Giga Patch – a biggest WW3 update since the launch. Warzone update will deliver two completely new large maps (outdoor locations), two new weapons, new strikes, vehicles, customizations, and several gameplay and teamwork improvements.

For example – we’re revamping some of the mechanics of Warzone (like jammers and spotting) to make them more useful in combat, to finally make Warzone what we wanted. There’s Mobile Spawn Points that you can drive and deploy to provide a tactical advantage to your team, Heli Drone that flies over the Warzone and provides crucial air support and a few other surprises. More info regarding the Giga Patch will be revealed in future reports. We believe that Warzone Giga Patch will be ready to release in April.

Last week you saw Smolensk, today we are proudly presenting to you Polyarny!

Polyarny is the main base of Northern Fleet and a city located on the Murmansk fjord, in the far north of Russia. This naval base is in use since the 1930s, but since the 1950s it was used for modifying and repairing nuclear-powered submarines in what is known as the Russian Shipyard Number 10 (also named Shkval). Around 1970 it was expanded to handle larger vessels, and is now employing about 3000 workers and the overall dock length is around 550 meters (1,800 ft).

From the gameplay perspective, it’s placed on a slope, giving quite a view for those on the top. It’s a big, open map, but has some buildings, which would make it a hybrid of an outdoor map and urban one. There are some administrative buildings as well as apartment blocks, frosty weather and a lot of places to hide – which comes in useful because the skies are big and wide open.

UE4 4.21 Game Engine Update
We’re updating the underlying technology soon as well. While we have made some changes to Unreal Engine 4 to suit our needs, some parts of it didn’t change much and we can still update them easily. We’ve decided to switch from 4.19.2 that we’re using now to 4.21. This should improve performance a bit and let us use some of the new tools provided in newer versions of the engine.

Recon
Last, but certainly not least, Recon will come after Warzone giga-patch. This decision was made because of two main reasons: first, the game has to be more stable for the new game mode, has to be more optimized and more polished to make sure the experience is what we wanted. Secondly, we want to make sure the game mode is as good as possible before we widely present it to the public. This means continued testing and making improvements until we feel it’s ready and plays how it should – Recon is being improved & tested every week !.

Free Weekends
Many of you asked us about our plans regarding free weekends – centrally this is something that will happen in the nearest future, but we have some things to take care of before this is possible. Just so you know, we’re already talking with our server provider Zeuz.io to secure extra resources for this occasion.

Rest assured the overall plan didn’t change and we still are on track with our goal of releasing after 12-15 months in Early Access, we just moved the pieces around to make sure we’re doing it right. We will also be updating the Roadmap soon to reflect new plans.

See you next week for some more information fresh from the studio!

Weekly Report #3 - SMOLENSK

Soldiers!

First of all, thank you to those that took part in our last weeks poll, in which we had over 6000 votes. As we thought, you are firmly for bugfixing and improvements being a priority over adding more features and this is exactly what we’re going to do. We also plan on more community polls in the future, so keep an eye out on our socials.

This all being said, it’s mostly the programming and testing teams that are focusing on bugfixes and improvements, which leaves the artists to do their job just as they did before – new weapons, uniforms, vehicles and still coming, and maps are also still on track. Our plans for finishing the game on time didn’t change, we just switched the priorities accordingly.

This is why today we’re taking a look at Smolensk, which will be our next big Warzone map. You’ve had a chance to play it a bit and give us feedback and we took some time to prepare the good looking version of this map, along with a lot of gameplay changes that came from our players testing the map and helping us hone in on the direction we want to go with it.

But first, a bit about history of this place. Smolensk is located on several historical invasion routes due to the relatively flat and solid terrain and it being on the way from Berlin to Moscow (best route from east to west Europe). Smolensk area also known as a “smolensk gate” in geo-strategic terms, as had great significance for the many war conflicts in Russia and Central Europe throughout the ages (for example: Napoleonic Wars, World War I & II). This is also the reason why this location was chosen as a background for next World War 3 map.

We want to keep the maps we’re adding a real strategic targets. Big cities are obvious, but most battles take place outside of the big-cities, especially armored warfare.

This is the first of our outdoor maps, it changes the gameplay massively compared to urban combat. Vehicles really can stretch their tracks and good strike usage is critical. The skies are much more deadly, but there’s also more cover between points in the form of trees to hide from those pesky Quadrocopters and in the nearest future – the Combat Heli Drone. There are long distances without breaks in the line of sight, so sniping moves to a whole new level. People running between bushes and branches, a lot of elevation changes and really interesting capture locations make this map a great place to fight. Flanks can come from any angle and they certainly do – make sure to have your squad with you to cover your back.

Smolensk is almost complete, we’re now fixing collisions and other bugs, so you can expect it to come to the game soon™.
