Dead Maze - Atelier 801

Welcome to our weekly news! Time for us to inspect our surrounding environment, Dead Maze's maps are vast and each of them offer a greatly different experience. Let's roll!

A contemporary universe

We want to allow you to travel through familiar scenes : those iconic places were once familliar and benign before the apocalypse. But since the fall, urban areas have been abandonned or ravaged to the point where everything is to be re-explored.

But Dead Maze is not limited to civilized environnements, we designed wilder and even deadlier environments, where unprepared survivors might perish due to environnemental effects.

Infecteds are not the only ones that bite... the cold does too!

And the heat won't be an ally either. Will you survive the searing desert?

Maps uniqueness

As you have already guessed, different territories mean different climates, stories, loots, and a lot of adaptation, which is the key of Dead Maze: to make-do with what's around you. That's survival 101.

Given the maps to explore are huge, the more you stray away from the safe-ish areas represented by campfires, the more you will encounter increasingly dangerous atmospheres and secrets.

The secrets

During your exploration, you might come accross deadends that have something odd to them.
Periodically, those will turn into passages that will temporary open, giving access to an extremely dangerous area.

But victory will be sweet: if you manage to handle the hordes of foes, unique rewards will await you by the end of the secret passage.

Shelter

To protect themselves, survivors can gather around campfires to eat, drink, rest, or exchange weapons or other items. Each map begins with one of those campfires, where you carefully park your bike before going on your exploration.

While you explore, you might stumble upon structures that will allow you to gather with your friends.
This fire works just as permanent campfires: you can rest and eat, but you will first have to fuel that fire.

If you feel safe enough, and you're really hungry, a small fire like this can come in handy. But warn your teammates: they will only have a very limited amount of time to join you, otherwise it will cost a lot to light that fire again.

Numerous other environments will be available in the game, but let's keep a bit of surprise for the launch!

Dead Maze - Atelier 801

Welcome to our third weekly update! Today we will go deeper into the survival mechanisms of the game, detailing exactly how you will have to deal with hunger, thirst and fatigue.

Choose wisely

Contrary to most survivals where your gauges go down over time, we decided they should rather depend on the actions you choose to perform. This both gives you more time to discuss with your teammates about elaborate strategies, and it lets you have the control over your gauges a lot more.

So, how do they go down exactly? Each time you open a container, you will be prompted with a window that shows how much picking an item will cost you.

In this example, the item Painkillers will cost me 12 thirst points and 12 fatigue points to pick it up. Pretty costly, but this could be very useful later.

Special containers

In some places, you will find containers that are sealed in a particular way, and need an action to reveal their content.

This safe could be opened easily, if only I had a crowbar. I don't, and I don't want to take my time to try to pick the lock carefully (there are infected around!), so I try my chance at the brute force way. Unfortunately that didn't work out for me, and now I just lost 10 fatigue points for nothing.

Fishing!

Sometimes, when exploring the world, you can see some fishing spots in areas with water ponds or lakes. They work the same as the special containers: you can easily catch some fish with a fishing rod, or you can choose to take some time and energy to craft a rudimentary spike, or you can just... try to catch them with your bare hands.

Here, I succeeded! But, spoiler alert, it doesn't always go right, and diving your unprotected hands in the water in an apocalypse context might not be the most sound choice.

Time to rest

Now that we listed the numerous ways your gauges are going down, let's cover how to get them back up.
Once you explored the world enough, you can either craft a campfire to rest by its side, or head to an existing permanent campfire, spread out all through the maps.

By clicking on it, you will sit down by the fire, and that's where you will be able to use the various items you gathered to feed yourself.

As you can see, other players can sit by the campfire, and they are able to see your thirst, hunger, fatigue and different afflictions, and choose to help you. You can help them too, if you happen to have an item they need, granting you a small XP bonus (and hopefully, a new friend!).

The longer you play without resting at a campfire, the more XP and loot you will be granted: we call that system the Threat Level. But that will be explained in another news post!

Dead Maze - Atelier 801

Welcome to this second news on Dead Maze’s development! Put on your glasses because today we will introduce some background lore, the main storyline, and a couple of our main characters!

Ready for the deep dive? Let’s go!

The dusk of civilization

Six months ago, a gigantic earthquake located on the mid-Atlantic ridge started a chain of events that would destroy the foundations of civilization. This earthquake partially collapsed over eight thousand kilometers of abyssal plains while deploying an energy equivalent to five thousand megatons of TNT through seismic waves. As of now, what could have triggered such a massive disaster remains a mystery.

Spreading to the ocean, the energy created a two hundred meters tall Tsunami which crashed upon the coasts less than an hour later. USA’s East coast, Rio, Lisbon, Dakar, and many more were all instantly wiped out as the wave penetrated up to sixty kilometers into the lands. The people were caught off-guard and had no chance to flee the tides, creating a death toll counted in hundred of millions.

As horrifying as it gets, this was merely the beginning. Something was brought from the abysses to the shores: A poisonous substance turning human beings into mindless and savage infecteds. The bio-hazard quickly spread from host to host as the countries were still mourning the Tsunami’s death toll.

Governments’ containment plans arrived too late and ultimately failed. Within a month after the first wave hit, all hints of civilization and organized responses were rumored to be gone on a worldwide scale. Infecteds were everywhere, effectively annihilating hopes for shelters and safe havens. Only a small amount of the population happened to be innately immune to the turning for reasons yet unknown. But most of those died as well, hunted down by infected hosts. Few months after civilization came to a brutal stop, most of humanity has been wiped out. Most, but not all of it.

The Phenomenon

The story mostly takes place in California where the last known pocket of survivors tries to make a stand in a settlement named Lakeview. They managed to stabilize even through these dark times thanks to incredible sacrifices, cunning, and bravery.

With the player’s help, they will soon realize that something slow but deadly is looming over them, something you cannot escape, fight or wait-out. What they will soon name the “phenomenon” is approaching California, and by the time they realize what this is, it might already be too late.

The main storyline will be supported by short 2D cinematics and a host of carefully crafted characters teaming together to survive. Here’s a sneak peek of some of them:

Chloe Thorn

The fiery Chloe has quite a temper, speaks her mind without filter and acts on instinct. She can be harsh, rude, and falling on her wrong side is poorly advised. However behind the roughness, she hides values of bravery and kindness that she tries to uphold through the apocalypse. A relentless warrior if there is to be one. Since she lost her family and friends, she is haunted by the fear of ending up all alone, but every brave soul has torments of its own.

Jared Crane

He could have been a real hero. He is a capable fighter, a former engineer from the military, has a kind heart and an IQ almost unparalleled among his peers. He had all the key features needed to be the ideal survivor, and a leader for his people. But his mind was crushed when he lost his daughter during the apocalypse.

Ever since his psyché split, he has developed schizophrenic patterns, with notably a dark call to hurt others. So far, he never did, but the call is still there. To avoid problems, he actively makes sure never to be in the position to answer it. But given his unique capabilities, he will have to get out of his comfort zone and risk turning into a monster if he is to prove useful.

Karen Jade

Karen Jade, mostly known as “Madame Jade”, is the ruthless leader of an opportunist organization feeding off despair to make advantageous trades and bargains. Her men wear body armors and automatic weapons, far from being mere survivors, they are mostly composed of lazy former paramilitary and mercenaries.

Karen is kind of an oddball, who in their right mind would wear a cocktail dress and high heels during the apocalypse? She would. “Before” she could have never have afforded those fantasies, now that these vanity items are worthless she couldn’t help but indulge in what she often dreamed about. The thing is, of course she cannot defend herself, but she doesn’t have to: her men do the dirty work. She has the power to make her fantasies come true, and mocking her for her strange habits would be a fatal mistake.

She is not an antagonist per se, nor is she an ally. She’s somewhere in between, in that grey area that harbors the opportunists of her kind.

Dead Maze - Atelier 801

Hello and welcome to this first news! We will try to keep you updated as regularly as possible here about the ongoing development of the game, so you have a better idea of the various features of the game.

Today, I will address a feature many of you asked about on social media and forums: the player's camp.

Come back home after a long exploration

Early in the game, you will be assigned a parcel of land with a basic shack built on it, where you can return to in between sessions of exploration. Every item you collect in the world can be recycled into basic resources, such as wood, iron or nails, which you will use to build new structures for your camp.
You can also find plans during the exploration phase, with the rarest pieces in the most dangerous places.

You can place all the furniture anywhere inside or outside your house, and it will build instantly. No pesky waiting times, promise!

Once the structures are built, you can use them to craft various items.

Visit your neighbors

Your camp is a part of a neighborhood of 8 different camps, that you can visit at any time. If you have friends in your friendlist, their camp will be displayed next to yours, so you can see their house and visit them when they're here.

There are also social activities going on at the center of the neighborhood: infrequently, some non-playing characters will appear, granting you with side quests, or selling you rare goods.

You can also just gather around the campfire, to share a meat brochette.

Make things grow

You can even build a small vegetable garden, and buildings to shelter farm animals to diversify your sources of food, but that will be detailed in another post!
