I completely rebuilt outfit and weapon selection menus and I think you will like it!
Multi-directional navigation (Enter is back!)
All items in one page
Scrollable with keyboard navigation, drag and mouse wheel
Progress percentage on locked items
Nicer purchase and lock information popups
Bumps, shakes and wiggles
This is a pretty big update, so let me know if anything got broken!
Also
COOP: Fixed missing weapon bug
COOP: Increased difficulty
COOP: Removed restart boost (it was breaking the game)
Fixed some banana-related bugs
Added banner for outfit contest
Contest Extension
I'm extending Outfit Contest until Monday, December 20 to include the weekend (best time to draw silly outfits) and give more time to people who will learn about the contest via in-game banner.
I love what you've been uploading to Bacon May Die Workshop and I want to see more of it, so it is contest time! Gonna keep it short and simple, because I want to make sure everything runs properly before doing another one with bigger prizes, community voting and different categories.
This time rules are simple:
Participation
Create an outfit with 2 or more items for Bacon May Die
Upload it to Steam Workshop
Post a link to it in the comments of this post before December 17th
Wait until I'll announce winners on December 17th, 2021December 20th, 2021
If you have already uploaded an outfit before this contest started - it counts too, just post a link to it!
Prizes
Best outfit wins a $10 game of their choice (key or gift if I can't get a key) + Card Hog
Added an option to throw further (UP, UP (hold) + BACK)
Tweaked hitboxes of a few enemies (Shroom and Hedgehog) to make them easier to hit
Fixed some UI issues
Throwing is simple: keep holding UP and press BACK.
Currently all nades are always unlocked and cost 10 ammo to use. This will change, but I'm still figuring out the best way to do it.
Some Grenade Ammo Ideas
Could use same ammo as ranged weapons (different costs depending on power)
Nades could use separate ammo
Nades could be recharged every stage
Could be unlimited, but with a cooldown
Nade ammo could be purchasable*
* Regarding the last idea... I think I would make it so that NPC only has different grenades in stock to avoid everyone using "the best" grenade all of the time. That could make this gameplay addition more interesting, but at a cost of having to stop at that NPC.
After running out of the nades/ammo, pig would throw some kind of silly backup throwable.
Warning: in the latest update I changed a lot of user interface code, so let me know if any buttons stopped working as I haven't got time to check everything. This is for the greater good as I'm trying to improve user experience.
NPC for skills (should spawn instead of the dresser now)
New (and only) skill combo: DOWN+FWD
Draft version of skill selection menu
Removed old "secret" skills
Some boring passive skills for testing
Fixed "Rocket Rain" rockets not doing direct damage
Fixed some projectile-related crashes
Current DOWN+FWD skills are Saw Roll, Rocket Rain and Sword Throw (names might change), however I'm not sure if their flow fits this key combo, so will experiment further.
This new menu uses different interface controls, because I decided to save me some headache and introduce Enter key to it as well as proper grid controls, which would make navigating outfit/weapon menus easier, but I haven't got around redoing those yet.
I'm not sure about passive skills just yet. I think something like "critical chance increase" is a bit boring and should either be an additional item (trinket) or something players could level up during the run (another idea I have) that would reset with game over.
However I'm getting a bit worried that by adding too much I might ruin the attractive simplicity of the game :)
Let me know what you think!
P.s. I'm planning a small Workshop outfit contest, so keep your eyes open for that!
First, I'd like to thank all of you who chose to review the game as part as Autumn Sale challenge, it was amazing to see the rating count grow! Reaching 500 reviews is a huge milestone and you helped to make that happen.
Back to update! The latest version of Bacon May Die has a few new things. For example... Most of the explosives should deal some damage or at least knockback multiple enemies which was something I wanted from the very beginning.
I also wanted to rework the special moves that were an unintentional secret until some of the button mashers figured them out. I really don't like how they're performed... and neither does anyone else, I bet. It is tricky to add combos when you only have arrow keys to work with and those already do plenty.
So, here's a new "blade dash"! It might change the combo, but for now you have to double tap LEFT or RIGHT while holding DOWN. The old "rocket rain", "cutlass throw" and "spike slam" skills will have some adjustments made and likely to go in a sort of slot system where you can equip one or another to a certain key combination.
I also added nades to the menu of the weapon merchant, but there's only snowball available for now. The combo for throwing it is UP + BACK.
Do you have any suggestions for the skills or grenades? Let me know!
P.S. Don't forget to check out WORKSHOP for community made outfits! Some of them are awesome, others - hilarious!
So in this update doing a "flip back" (jump and press "back" while holding jump button) will throw a snowball. Needs a bit of tweaking and feels awkward at the beginning, but let me know what you think about it.
Maybe Going Premium One Day?
Since I've been doing quite a bit of work on this game again, I started to think about changing it from free to paid some time in the future. Especially if I'll manage to implement a few of the bigger ideas I have.
Nothing would change for players who have it installed already, but I could earn a bit of money. Not sure about the price yet, depends on how much the game will be improved until then ($3?).
Soooo, I randomly started working on a Workshop integration for Bacon May Die outfits and early version of it is already in the game. Play around with it and report any issues you notice or tell me about the features you'd like to see added to the outfit "manager"!
Short Guide
The anchor points of the pig are a bit weird, but they will have to do for now. I might add custom anchor points in the future, but don't count on that.
Few main things:
Pig has 4 outfit slots: glasses, hat, body and neck
You can publish single items or create awesome outfits from multiple parts
Center of the glasses is pinned between the eyes of the pig
Anchor point of the hats are at the bottom, not middle
There's no way to set the depth or hide ears yet
Use 128x128 image size for convenience
Pig has a weird body shape, because nature isn't perfect

I will provide a vector source with more examples some time during the weekend.
