Soooo, I randomly started working on a Workshop integration for Bacon May Die outfits and early version of it is already in the game. Play around with it and report any issues you notice or tell me about the features you'd like to see added to the outfit "manager"!
Short Guide
The anchor points of the pig are a bit weird, but they will have to do for now. I might add custom anchor points in the future, but don't count on that.
Few main things:
Pig has 4 outfit slots: glasses, hat, body and neck
You can publish single items or create awesome outfits from multiple parts
Center of the glasses is pinned between the eyes of the pig
Anchor point of the hats are at the bottom, not middle
There's no way to set the depth or hide ears yet
Use 128x128 image size for convenience
Pig has a weird body shape, because nature isn't perfect
Templates
I will provide a vector source with more examples some time during the weekend.
I'm looking for someone who could draw more outfits for Bacon May Die. The main requirement would be to fit existing style (outlines, colors, size, etc), which I find to be a tricky task despite art being relatively simple. Should also be vector art, so I could edit it easily if needed. Ability to think of new items would be a huge plus! This is a paid gig.
Bacon May Die is finally out of the pan in a form of a completely FREE release! Hope it's crispy enough for you to have some fun smashing a bunch of weird enemies around!
You can read about my reasons for releasing game this way in a recent Steam post. In short, it would be too complicated and time consuming to substantially improve it for a premium launch and I'd rather focus on making a proper Bacon May Die sequel later. Gonna need your feedback for that!
Now, what's in store for this release? It all depends on how much time I can find to work on it, but here are a few things I have in mind for the future.
Bug fixes and balance tweaks depending on feedback
Fixing hitboxes of a few annoying hard-to-hit enemies (hedgehogs, bats)
not sure if anyone can see this, but I hope you can! So, here's the thing.. After delaying Bacon May Die for ages I came to a conclusion that I'd like to release it in the current state for free. There are a few reasons for it...
No time to work on it due to other projects
Bacon May Die code is old and terrifies me
No confidence if players like its control scheme
However, I realize that this game can be pretty cool and one day I would like to maybe start working on a sequel... So, a free release would be beneficial, since I would get plenty of feedback on controls and gameplay as well as some audience for the next game.
Even the free release would likely to get some achievements, bug fixes and maybe Steam Workshop integration for outfits if I'll find time for that.
Alternatively, I can slap a $1-2 price tag, mostly so I could add Trading Cards (free games can't have them), but that might greatly impact potential audience reach.
What year is this? Good news is that game is still alive, but bad news is that, obviously, it is not getting closer to actual release very fast. But we'll get there, I promise!
This update, while doesn't introduce any significant content additions, is important, because I developed a story framework (quests, traveling between areas, better controlled enemy spawns) I would like for you to test!
So, a few new major changes:
Short story mode to test!
New item selection UI which doesn't require "ENTER" or "SPACE" presses
Experimental power move usage
A lot of smaller changes and improvements
Current power move usage: HOLD up and press LEFT, DOWN or UP (again) to use a special attack. I find it better than previous combo-based system, but this one is too slow and clunky for my taste, so I will try to think of something else to use.
Story mode doesn't have saving yet, but it's very short and easy to finish.
New item selection isn't available with medic. pet or pilot yet.
Hopefully, the gap between updates will get much shorter now!
A bouquet of various bug fixes, tweaks and improvements! I swear, I'll get to content as soon as possible, but these just keep piling up and I want to make your experience as good as I possibly can.
Added boss healthbars
Added healtbars to stronger enemies
Improved weapon collision with projectiles
Improved enemy spawn locations
Tweaked winter area enemy set and their health points
Planes can spawn from both sides now
Increased hedgehog hitbox during attack, so it's less frustrating to fight
Fixed spell casting not working with auto ranged weapons
Fixed ammo count glitches
Fixed spiders spawning offscreen
Disabled boss HP scaling to make those fights feel less grindy
Disabled spell casting when character is talking to NPC
Removed close range damage from empty ranged weapon
Updated enemy portraits
Sound: removed "whoosh" from ranged weapons
Sound: updated empty weapon sound
Issues I'm aware of and will fix eventually:
after previous update rolling can be very unreliable way to dodge enemy attacks if it gets interrupted by body knock back
winter area enemies are too grindy to fight
dungeon enemy set is visually and mechanically boring
Your feeedback helps me move forward, so keep it coming!
