Shelter Devlog #2 is here. If you've missed the #1 about the lore and inspirations, you can check it out here. The new expansion's post-apocalyptic setting deserves a completely unique workspace suitable for all the challenges a wasteland chef might encounter. We decided to locate the kitchen in a shelter hidden under the shed found by the protagonist at the start of the game.
The shelter consists of 4 chambers. The first one is the glowing mushroom farm you might know from the previous entries. Below is a comparison between the concept and in-game screenshot.
Right next to it there's the storage area with a huge old-time fridge and a bunch of shelves for storing all the food gathered by farming, hunting or trading with the caravan.
The main chamber is where you do all the cooking. The main addition will be the huge grill in the middle of the room allowing for preparing tasty skewers.
The equipment is a combination of recovered pre-war items as well as makeshift cooking tools!
The final area is the entrance chamber where you can access the ladder and climb up to the shed above which serves as a shooting range for hunting mutants roaming the wasteland and harvesting their meat.
How do you like the new areas compared to the previous kitchens?

As promised, here's the first entry in the series of posts describing in detail the process of creating this post-nuclear expansion. We'll start off by giving you some insight on the inspirations for the DLC.
When coming up with ideas for new content after Pizza, we quickly decided that we wanted to try a more unusual approach to cooking. Post-apocalyptic setting provided a great opportunity for introducing uncanny mutated food products prepared using unconventional culinary solutions and an environment you wouldn’t normally expect in a cooking game. Obviously, in such a world, a skilled cook able to provide good quality nutritious food would always be in high demand. Plus, a post-apocalypse is simply an awesome setting!
After initial research focused on various great movies, books and games we created the first concept arts. The vast desert wastelands of Mad Max had the biggest influence on the new environment. The teal and orange color palette of scorched soil and blue skies above were the look we started to aim for with the surface world.
Mushroom farm concept served as an inspiration for various edible plants created by the radiation.
The expansion is called Shelter for a reason. When it comes to underground bunkers, the biggest influence comes, obviously, from the Fallout (and less obviously from real-life submarine interiors). Unlike the Fallout Vaults though, we wanted our shelter to be equipped with various cooking utensils.
That’s why we focused on repurposing different everyday items from the late 1980s to be used for cooking roughly 46 years after the nuclear apocalypse. Metro 2033 is a great example of a franchise with interesting designs, where people tinker with mundane items to survive in the Moscow metro 20 years after the war that put their world to an end.
Initially we had 2 ideas for the basic plot and story in the game. In the first one you’d be a member of an underground shelter cooking for a community gathered inside before the bombs fell until the outside world is safe to live again. The second idea, the one we finally took on, was being a skilled cook living in the wastelands looking for their lost family. This plot allowed for introducing more interactions with other settlements, resulting in more diverse quests.
In the next Devlog we’ll have a deeper look at some of the new mechanics such as hunting and growing food. Stay tuned!
