Tannenberg - Wilson
Our latest free update to WW1 FPS Tannenberg adds a new Ukraine map to the game. As always it’s the result of extensive research and design, with the goal of establishing an authentic environment that also creates exciting gameplay. We focused specifically on the trench maps from the Battle of Zborov, with the goal of immersing players in the perspective of soldiers who fought on the vast plains and endless steppes on the edge of the continent. At first glance, those wide plains of Ukraine might seem like they lack distinctive details to build a map around, but once you dig a little deeper there’s a wealth of inspiring information.. Let’s start with a little history.

During the years of the First World War, Ukraine was not an independent nation - the term referred to territory Western Ukrainian land had been split between Austria and the Russian Empire since the 1700s. Known as the ‘breadbasket of the Empire’ the area had a troubled history, with uprisings, religious conflict between Ukrainian peasantry and Polish or Lithuainian land owners, and suppression of the Ukrainian language by Russia.

Ukrainians fought on both sides in the conflict, with 3,500,000 fighting for Russia and 250,000 for Austria-Hungary. A great cost was paid by the civilian population, who were distrusted by both Russia and Austria-Hungary. They often became victims of harsh reprisals for opposition real or imagined. There was heavy fighting in the Ukraine during the Brusilov and Kerensky offensives, and major counter-attacks by the Central Powers. Conflict in the area didn’t end with the collapse of the Russian Empire, either.

After the 1917 Russian Revolution several factions fought for control of Ukraine. A number of Ukrainian states were established, but most collapsed quickly. The Polish army invaded and captured much of Western Ukraine, but Bolshevik forces defeated a drive on Kiev. An anarchist group called the Black Army held the southern regions from 1918 against the tsarist White Army, but were defeated by the Red Army in 1921. In December 1922, Ukraine became a founding member of the Soviet Union.

When building the Ukraine map for Tannenberg, one of the key elements was (surprise surprise) trenches! You might think that we would get bored of researching and modelling trenches, but in fact the variety of trenches used during the First World War is something most people don’t fully understand. You can see ‘typical’ trenches of the type most people would imagine in our Western Front game Verdun. On the Eastern Front though, there were several different styles of wooden trenches - in the Ukraine, these wattle trenches (seen in the images above and below) were common.

As you can see from the next comparison shot, the landscape is largely flat except for the trenches and dugouts prepared by the opposing armies. This gives heavy machine guns good sight lines across large areas of the map. Of course when it’s your boots on the ground you’ll be able to find small slopes and depressions to gain some cover while advancing, but it would be highly recommended to encourage your NCOs to make use of the smoke shell call-ins!

Representing artillery is essential to creating an authentic WW1 game. The artillery players use in combat (calling in barrages from field telephones) is a long way outside the battlefield - but that doesn’t mean that you won’t see any big guns up close. Gun pits like those shown in the next image illustrate the sort of defensive positions that might be established by artillery crews. In-game, the fighting has reached too close of a range for these guns to be fired. But the fortifications they are emplaced within provide invaluable cover, as can the guns themselves if it comes down to it.

We think the Ukraine map will offer players fresh challenges and the opportunity to develop new tactics as they battle across the trench lines and rolling plains. Don’t forget to make use of those smoke barrages!

We're excited to announce that the new Ukraine map will be released next week on Thursday 17th! We've got a collection of screenshots and a GIF below for your viewing pleasure!

Eastern Front trenches on the Ukraine map.

Ukraine has many open stretches of ground between the distinctive wattle trenches, and there are heavy machine guns placed to cover many of these exposed areas. Luckily shell craters and hastily built battlefield emplacements will provide some cover - otherwise make sure your NCOs are making use of their smoke barrage ability!

Tannenberg - Blazy013
New battlefield announced! Tannenberg’s next expansion will include a large new map set in Ukrainian territory!

The new Ukraine map is inspired by a key section of the Eastern Front which saw heavy fighting during the Brusilov Offensive, Kerensky Offensive, major counter-attacks by the Central Powers, and more. Often referred to as the ‘breadbasket of the Empire’, Ukraine was not an independent country when the First World War broke out. Instead the territory was partially owned by Russia, and partly by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Nationalist sentiment was growing, but when the war began there were Ukrainians on both sides of the conflict. Some 250,000 Ukrainians fought for Austria-Hungary, but far more fought for the Russian Empire – 3.5 million.

Have a look at one of our reference images and how it came out in-game.

In-game you’ll find Ukraine to be a largely open map, with the open plains broken up by the distinctive wattle trenches, a few bunkers, and shell craters.
Heavy machineguns are particularly well positioned with good lines of sight, so you’ll want to remember that all NCOs can call in smoke barrages, regardless of squad type.

The free Latvia expansion is live!
Join the Latvian Riflemen defending their homeland or attempt to break their defensive positions in the sand dunes and marshes of the new Baltic map! To celebrate today’s release, Tannenberg is 50% off on Steam!
https://youtu.be/WsfSaPbK5QQ
Face the Latvian Riflemen
The Latvian Riflemen are a support squad equipped primarily with the Type 30 and Type 38 Japanese import rifles and older repeating Winchesters. They are renowned for their composure under fire, and their NCO ability can remove weapon sway for 30 seconds, allowing perfect shots by skilled players in the squad at key moments in battle. For trench assaults they carry plenty of grenades and a few squad members carry the iconic US M1911 pistol.

Welcome to The Baltic
Sand dunes, marshes, and swamps form the environs of the new Baltic map. Wooden fortifications and sandbag positions line the water edges, overlooking pontoon bridges and fords. The land is mostly flat, so you’ll need to make good use of cover to avoid enemy fire.

New rifles, special grenades, and a pistol
The Entente factions get three new non-native weapons in this update - the Japanese Type 38 rifle is more modern than the Type 30 already in the game, the Vetterli M1870/87 is a 4 shot Italian rifle converted from the single shot version, and the M1911 pistol needs no introduction!

In addition to these firearms, there are two new types of grenade - the German Nebelbombe smoke grenade and Russian M1917 Chemical grenade. These can be used to deploy smoke or gas clouds while attacking or defending without the need for a telephone to call in a barrage from artillery.

NCO leadership abilities
Another exciting feature in the expansion is NCO command powers. They can already use field telephones to call in support from artillery or aircraft, and to give movement orders, but now they can also activate special leadership boosts for a limited time.

Here are two examples from the new Latvian Riflemen and the last squad we added - the Bulgarians.

Squad levelling overhaul
Today’s update significantly changes how squad levelling works. The system we had in place did not feel right as it was unclear why/how your level increased and for some users it was difficult to achieve and stay at a high level. To counter this we have chosen to overhaul the system and replace it with something that is more clear and rewarding.

Previously, you earned co-op squad XP with each squad member which resulted in the final squad level. Under the new system, every player has an individual squad level for each type of squad. The level of a squad in-game is simply equal to the combined squad levels of each player in the squad - so a Tommies squad with two players who have a Tommy squad level of 10 and two players who have a Tommy squad level of 15 would have a total level of 10+10+15+15 = 50.

This also means that you can reach a level 100 squad playing by yourself, and if there is any player within your squad who has level 100, the squad will be level 100.

For those who have worked hard to reach a high level in the legacy system, have no fear! We've also made sure that the stats of the legacy system still function as well - anybody who reached a level 100 squad with their friends under the previous system will still see a level 100 squad when they play with those same friends, even if their squad level under the new system would be lower! The legacy system kicks in after a legacy squad level of 10+. It is, however, no longer possible to level through the legacy system.

Unity version update, and more.
The update also brings an update to the latest version of Unity (2019.1) and some other bits and pieces - you can read the full changelog on the forums. A few of the most interesting updates include:
  • Overhauled squad levelling system
  • Weapon stats sorting (i.e. kills, minutes played etc.).
  • Added settings option to make some UI text elements larger (i.e. in-game text chat).
  • Optimized spawning of bots, especially for the player that's controlling them.
  • NCO abilities are now displayed in a new icon to other squad mates.
Finally, a giveaway...

Five days left...
Mark your calendars and get ready to jump into the fray on a new battlefield with a new squad and new weapons! With less than a week to go, it's time to ramp up the teasers. Without further ado:

NCO abilities
Another new feature of the expansion will be NCO abilities for each squad! In addition to calling support via field telephones and giving movement orders, the NCO of each squad will have a special leadership power which can aid their team or will boost their squad for a short time. Take a look...

We’ll leave you with another comparison image, this time of the map itself.

A new squad is on the way…
As you probably all know by now, a new squad is going to be added to Tannenberg in the next update, along with a new map and more weapons - if you missed it, we showed off some new grenades in this Frontline News post from a few weeks ago.

Today we’re looking at the human element of the coming expansion...

It’s important to keep your head warm, even under threat of gas attack.

For this image, we’ve censored his collar patches - we wouldn’t want to make things too easy for you all!

If you couldn’t tell from the above images, the new squad will join the Entente faction. They will be a support squad making generous use of imported rifles and a rather famous pistol. As a fighting unit, they didn’t exist at the start of the war, but formed quickly once given permission to do so.

Combined with teasers on our Twitter and Facebook pages, we’re sure you can figure out the squad.

Good luck!

Full Controller Support
Today brings a new update for Tannenberg which implements full controller support (controller fans let us know how it feels!) as well as adjustments to team balance. Some of the most notable changes below:
  • Full controller support!
  • New custom match options: set the year, Entente squad, Central squad, ability cooldown duration, friendly fire and friendly fire penalty.
  • Players can't join the larger team, max player count difference is set to 2.
  • When squad/team mates use your placeable/carryable, you'll now receive points.
  • Fixed haystack collision near the farmhouse in Prussia.
As always, check out the full changelog on the forums!

Team Balance
The community has let us know there are sometimes issues with team balance when players join the team that’s already winning. In this update we have fixed a bug which allowed people to switch to the smaller team via the scoreboard when in-game, and implemented a change which will prevent people joining the larger team, limiting the maximum difference in human players to 2.

Where is this?

Hmm…

New types of grenade and the Steam Summer Sale!
The next free expansion which will soon be arriving for Tannenberg will introduce some new types of grenade which will provide new tactical options, which we’re excited to reveal below. You can see our update plans in our roadmap!
Plus, don’t forget that Tannenberg is 50% off right now in the Steam Summer Sale, and Verdun is 60% off!

Now, on to the grenades!

German Type N Nebelbombe.

Smoke is often overlooked as a battlefield tool. When your job is to capture a location, you don’t need to kill every enemy present before moving in - when sniping at range the position will usually be reinforced anyway by the time you get there. It’s often better to aggressively take the point, then defend against counter-attacks while clearing out any stragglers. This is where smoke can be very useful! Use it to cover your advance on a trench, block the line of sight of an enemy HMG, or just sow a little confusion in the enemy lines.

The M1917 Chemical grenade.

Gas is also very useful in an attack to disorient and weaken defenders, but it can be challenging to coordinate the artillery barrage with the attack itself. Carrying gas in grenade form allows you to more easily surprise your enemies and make sure you advance just as they are hurrying to fit their gas masks.

This screenshot by The Lion Sachiko nicely features both gas and smoke - fired from artillery for now! Better watch out for a flanking attack from that right hand side...

That’s all for today! Feel free to come chat about possibilities for the upcoming new grenades on our Discord channel!

See you next time!
