Tannenberg - Wilson

Full Controller Support
Today brings a new update for Tannenberg which implements full controller support (controller fans let us know how it feels!) as well as adjustments to team balance. Some of the most notable changes below:
  • Full controller support!
  • New custom match options: set the year, Entente squad, Central squad, ability cooldown duration, friendly fire and friendly fire penalty.
  • Players can't join the larger team, max player count difference is set to 2.
  • When squad/team mates use your placeable/carryable, you'll now receive points.
  • Fixed haystack collision near the farmhouse in Prussia.
As always, check out the full changelog on the forums!

Team Balance
The community has let us know there are sometimes issues with team balance when players join the team that’s already winning. In this update we have fixed a bug which allowed people to switch to the smaller team via the scoreboard when in-game, and implemented a change which will prevent people joining the larger team, limiting the maximum difference in human players to 2.

Where is this?

New types of grenade and the Steam Summer Sale!
The next free expansion which will soon be arriving for Tannenberg will introduce some new types of grenade which will provide new tactical options, which we’re excited to reveal below. You can see our update plans in our roadmap!
Plus, don’t forget that Tannenberg is 50% off right now in the Steam Summer Sale, and Verdun is 60% off!

Now, on to the grenades!

German Type N Nebelbombe.

Smoke is often overlooked as a battlefield tool. When your job is to capture a location, you don’t need to kill every enemy present before moving in - when sniping at range the position will usually be reinforced anyway by the time you get there. It’s often better to aggressively take the point, then defend against counter-attacks while clearing out any stragglers. This is where smoke can be very useful! Use it to cover your advance on a trench, block the line of sight of an enemy HMG, or just sow a little confusion in the enemy lines.

The M1917 Chemical grenade.

Gas is also very useful in an attack to disorient and weaken defenders, but it can be challenging to coordinate the artillery barrage with the attack itself. Carrying gas in grenade form allows you to more easily surprise your enemies and make sure you advance just as they are hurrying to fit their gas masks.

This screenshot by The Lion Sachiko nicely features both gas and smoke - fired from artillery for now! Better watch out for a flanking attack from that right hand side...

That’s all for today! Feel free to come chat about possibilities for the upcoming new grenades on our Discord channel!

See you next time!

Farewell to wolves!
It's been a few weeks since the end of the Wolf Truce event. Many soldiers were eaten, many wolves were slain. Now the survivors have retreated to their dens. Will they return? Who can say...

How many of you managed to get the Wolf Truce medal? In the past, most of our special event medals were awarded for being present, or for something outside the game such as the two minute silence. This time, you needed to call and hold a truce in an actual battle.

We knew this would be a challenge, but perhaps still underestimated things! Lots of people tried to organize the truce, but one stray shot (or uncommunicative loose cannon) ended many truces within the first minute! Perhaps a little more grace to allow a few shots before declaring the truce failed would be a good idea…

Speaking of good ideas, thanks to everyone who posted suggestions and comments on the wolves. While we don’t know exactly what the future will hold, we’d certainly like to see the wolves return to Tannenberg at some point in the future, and there are lots of good ideas on how to improve the experience.

Tannenberg on console!
We can reveal that the Eastern Front is coming to consoles! It will be released on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. More details will follow closer to release!

The Verdun console update is also progressing nicely and will be arriving in Q3 of this year, before Tannenberg is released on consoles.

Wildlife Photography
There were a whole lot of nice screenshots taken from the event - we’ve picked out just a few of our favorites below:

Incredible action shot by Natu!

Helloooooo! By Kolbasnik98.

And finally one more pile of wolves by DumpTruck. Did he move in to take the screenshot afterwards, or did he actually stand his ground as the wolves came at him from all directions?

That’s all for today! Progress continues at a steady pace on the map and squad featured on our dev roadmap, and work on the big Verdun console updates and the new UI are also going well. Until next time!

Tannenberg

The First World War shooter Verdun celebrates the famed Christmas Truce of 1914 with a special in-game event in which players from opposing sides can get together for snowball fights, soccer games, and card exchanges. Starting today and running until April 22, something similar, yet very different is happening in the trenches of its standalone expansion Tannenberg: The Wolf Truce.

This event, according to developer M2H, is also based on historical happenings, but from later in the war, when the carnage had driven large numbers of wolves from their normal ranges in search of food. They pushed into Germany, killing livestock and even children, and also began attacking soldiers, especially the wounded. It became such a problem that German and Russian soldiers were eventually forced to band together to fight them off.

The Wolf Truce event in Tannenberg recreates that lupine invasion by injecting aggressive wolves into the game, but what makes it really interesting is that players aren't actually forced to team up to fight them. The Christmas Truce event takes place in a special no-shooting area, separate from the usual maps, but the Wolf Truce will not, so while players can (and probably should) team up to survive, they can also opt to keep shooting each other and hope for the best—or, maybe, put on a friendly face and then wait for an opportune moment to hit 'em from behind.

Wolves can appear on any Tannenberg map over this weekend but will only appear on winter maps after that, and players who survive a wolf attack without injuring or killing anyone on the opposite team will earn the new Wolf Truce medal. Personally, I think it sounds like a recipe for disaster, but that's also the appeal, right? Details of the event are available on Steam, and a historical record of the Wolf Truce from a 1917 edition of the New York Times is yours to enjoy below.

Tannenberg - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Even games which pride themselves on historical authenticity can get a bit weird, given the topsy-turvy and-up-down world we live in. World War 1 multiplayer FPS Tannenberg is recreating reported real-world events from the winter of 1916/17, when… Russian and German troops temporarily joined forces to fight the ravenous packs of wolves trying to eat ’em. Tannenberg today started a special event where wolves will sometimes arrive on the battlefield to cause a bit of trouble, and players can team up to fight them – or try to take advantage of the other team being gnawed on. So yes, you will use military armaments to fight wolves. Good times on the Eastern Front.

The Wolf Truce Event begins!
Do you hear that howling in the woods? If you've been keeping an eye on our social media this won't come as a complete surprise, but aggressive wolf packs will be making their way into Tannenberg for the duration of this special event!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwDXkextcWg
From today until April 21 you should keep an eye out for wolves encroaching on the battlefield. Forced by hunger to seek human prey, packs of wolves are dangerous predators. Over the weekend canine interlopers will appear in any battle, and after that they will only appear on winter maps until the end of the event.

'Wolf Truces' were described by various books and newspapers, with Eastern Front combatants sometimes calling temporary ceasefires to deal with particularly aggressive groups of wolves.

For instance this article from the New York Times. While some details are likely exaggerated, it speaks to the real threat wolves could pose.

Earn a special Wolf Truce medal!
You will be able to earn a special Wolf Truce medal if you can survive a wolf attack without killing or injuring anyone on the opposing team. The game will not enforce any truce, though it will tell you when a wolf attack begins, and exactly when you will need to cease fire in order to earn the medal.

Over the weekend, there will be one wolf attack event in every battle. After that, there will be one wolf attack event in every battle on a winter map. There will be a minute of warning before the suggested truce period starts (which you will need to respect if you want to earn the medal). Finally, a timer will indicate how long wolves will continue to be attacking. Maintain the truce until that timer ends to earn the medal! You can also see whether or not the truce has already been broken.

Updates!
Yesterday's update fixed a range of issues, polished various aspects of the UI, and made improvements to bot behaviour. Here are some of the most notable:
    General Features
  • Players can now report others for cheating / toxic behaviour in-game, and add them to a personal ban list.
  • Fixed third person choke animation not playing after dying by gas.

    Menu Adjustments
  • Now when you try to join a full squad, instead of attempting to load, no action is taken.
  • Front selection can now be done via a sub-panel in the main menu, instead of an overlaid menu.
  • Replaced Private Match banner button with Custom Match game mode button.
  • Added LOW/MED/HIGH server population indicators. Will also display ping if we have pinged this session.

    Bots
  • Fixed bots not dying from gas.
  • Bots will take of their gas mask after exiting gas.
  • Fixed issue where bots would still know where their target is if it went hidden by smoke/gas after acquiring the target. The first target acquisition was already never possible through smoke/gas.
  • Fixed bots sometimes not spawning.
Check out the full changelog!

Reporting!
There is also a new report function which will allow players to report others for cheating, chat harassment, voice harassment and offensive names. Data is gathered from the match, processed, and passed on to administrators who may then take manual action based on multiple reports. Note that we will not apply automatic bans based on reports.

The new report function.

Good luck out there...

We are very excited to announce plans for a new deadly weapon in Tannenberg! Check out the teaser below:

Smoking Mechanics
Based on flawless advice from reliable 100% unbiased sources, we have implemented the following mechanics related to the new cigarette weapon:
  • Smoke transfer - blow smoke in the faces of your enemies to addict them to cigarettes. Watch out for friendly fire!
  • Nicotine meter - when addicted, if you don’t smoke every 46.4 seconds, you will begin to suffer suppression effects. These will increase until at three minutes your screen will be entirely blurred and shaking wildly.
  • Cigar class perk - some classes will gain a cigar perk. Cigars suppress your smoking requirement for 80 seconds, and create a double sized smoke cloud which travels twice as far. You can hand out cigars to your allies.
  • Three on a match - every third player who lights up will have all enemy players instantly gain auto-aim on their head.
  • Gas resistance - if you can smoke 20,000 cigarettes, you will become immune to poison gas.
  • Social bonus - If you and an enemy happen to light up at the same time while within 1 meter, you will becomes friends, and count as being on the same team for purposes of friendly fire.
  • Cut their supplies - Capturing a new ‘smoke dump’ sector type will both hinder your enemies and boost your allies. Enemies will find themselves with unreliable cigarettes which can spontaneously combust when lit, while you and your team will gain access to the Zigarette Ladung 9x, similar to the improvised German bundle grenades.
  • Kick the habit - survive 24 hours in-game without smoking, and you will no longer be addicted.

"I’ve never smoked a cigarette but I’ve seen them in movies, and I’m confident this will provide an accurate and enjoyable experience. Finally, don’t forget that smoking is bad for your health, and we certainly aren’t intending to advertise cigarettes" - Trench Dog
