On August 18th, our Relic Hunters franchise will celebrate its 6th anniversary!
To think that back in 2015 we were creating Relic Hunters Zero in a Game Jam for fun and with the intention of being a 100% free and open source game so that everyone could have fun and learn about video games. And to our surprise, the game ended up conquering the hearts of thousands of people around the world, creating an amazing community that cares about our dear Relic Hunters.
Now here we are, with a team of almost 30 people dedicated to bringing to life Relic Hunters Legend, the second and biggest game in the franchise and the most ambitious game ever made on Rogue Snail.
We're happy with everything we've accomplished over the years and we’re working hard to deliver great games to our community!
But we’re also here to ask for your help to make this moment even more remarkable! Relic Hunters Legend is almost getting 100k wishlists on Steam and we want your help to achieve this goal! If we get it by 18th August we’ll be making a raffle of 20 Legend Alpha Keys. The winners will be able to start enjoying our game earlier together, form parties and give us feedback and suggestions so we can keep improving our game.
So help us out by sharing with your friends, family and everyone you know that would like to play our game and spread the word about our dear Relic Hunters!
We’re more than thankful for all the love and confidence this community has given to us through all these years, we wouldn’t have come this far without you, so thank you so much!
Today we’re going to update you on the things we’ve been working on for Relic Hunters Legend in July. There are some new features, fixes and improvements and we hope you like what you’ll see here.
And remember: you can still test our latest Founders build until August 10th at the G. Round platform! So if you want to play an early Alpha version of the game and give us your feedback, go to the G. Round website and check how you can join the Playtest.
New Maps and Assets
We kept working on the new maps that are going to be implemented on the second and third Acts of Relic Hunters Legend. In the image above you can see some of the assets for Semila City, the richest place in the Galaxy. Fancy or cringe? You decide.
Our alpha players won't be able to see these new maps in-game until launch, but we guarantee it will be awesome to explore every detail present in these new locations.
The Subway
On Act 2 you will be able to ride the Subway from Hilltown to Semilla City!
During this section, the gameplay camera works differently from the rest of the game, so we worked to implement this new point of view.
First Pass on the new Game Mode: Delve
We’re working on the first pass of the new Game Mode: Delve. These are solo-able Dungeons (but you can also do them with a party if you want to) where you can fight unique Bosses that have dedicated loot tables.
You will have limited “Lives” in this Game mode, and the Mission will fail if you lose all of them. Each Boss defeat during your Delve will allow you to regain one Life.
New Weapons and Gear
We wanted to give more variety of Weapons and Gears to our players, especially at the first levels of the game, so we developed and implemented more common weapons and new gears with different affixes for our players to enjoy at the very beginning.
New animated cutscenes on the way!
These are also features that are going to be implemented only on the second and third Act of the game, but we’ve already started production on new animated cutscenes! The game’s release will include more than 5 minutes of new animations, and we’re super excited to see how you like them!
Pause Function
Now you can pause the game when playing solo! You can check your backpack or complete an Achievement without worrying about enemies. No more rushing to look at your newly legendary weapons while getting hit by mortars (unless you are in multiplayer, of course!).
Compare Loot Items
Now it's much easier to compare the equipped loot with the new ones that the player got on the missions. No more memorizing the affixes and rolls on your loot!
Pinkyy Skins!
Now Pinkyy also has new clothes to show off to the other Hunters! As you increase your Rebel Rank, you will unlock new Cosmetics. As with other Hunters, you can mix and match the pieces that you like, and also customize their color.
Dropship Game Mode descriptions
Now you can find a neat little tutorial for each Game Mode at the Dropship’s computer!
Rebel Rank Tutorials
We implemented a Tutorial for the Rebel Rank and now it is easier to figure out how the system works. Still needs some polishing, but it’s there!
New Options Screen
A new layout was made for the Options screen that now works with Joystick too!
Story: Streamlined Dialogues and Dialogue Options!
One of the most consistent feedback that we received from you was that some of the dialogue in the first Act of the game was too long and sometimes a little exhausting to read. We want people to get involved and enjoy the story, so we decided to revise all the dialogue.
We have reduced overall text by 10-20%. We also wanted our players to get a little bit more actively engaged with the story, so we created new dialogue options that will affect the reactions of NPCs according to what you choose.
Adventure System
We already explained the changes that we made on the Adventure System on the last Dev Blog, but we kept improving the system so the players can play a solo mission without leaving their party. This is a massive system change, so we will keep working and polishing for a few months.
Adventure Multitracking
You can now track multiple Adventures at the same time in your Journal!
Renaming “Hunter Screen” to “Backpack”
We decided to change the title of the inventory, at first they were called Hunter Screen but we realize that it’ll be better to keep it simple and now it's a more familiar “Backpack”, with a new icon to boot!
Gamepad Improvements
We have made significant improvements to gamepad navigation on menus, as well as improving the controls on skill usage.
Chat Improvements
Chat now has a dropdown for private messages and bubbles appear on them to notify the player. There are still some improvements to be made, but now you can chat with your friends easily!
Checkpoints
One piece of feedback that we got loud and clear was that you hated running back through empty levels if you happened to die at the very end. We have implemented a smarter Checkpoint system that will reduce the amount of running after your party wipes.
Visual Feedback: Scavenge Drill
Visual feedback for the capture point has been added to the Drill so that you don’t need to look at the UI to check your progress.
Improved “Basic Melee”
This is a feature that many of our testers didn’t realise even existed! We have made massive changes to it, both in ease of use and in game feel / behavior. There are also new animations and sound. Give those Ducans some proper smackin’!
We're still working pretty hard to improve and create awesome things for Relic Hunters Legend, we hope you enjoy what you're seeing so far. Participate in our Discord Channel, we're always there to answer your questions, share some thoughts, and having some fun together!
We're participating in the Week's playtest from G. Round Platform! G. Round is an exclusive community-driven platform where they carefully select a limited amount of games every week for their community to play and test. In turn, they are also dedicated to helping game developers gather feedback from the players to improve and polish their games to provide the ultimate gaming experience.
Want to Join their community? Click here, and check more details about it!
Relic Hunters Legend Playtest will be available for a limited time on the G. Round Platform, so if you feel like taking a peek at how the game is developing and want to help us out by giving feedback, go there to not miss this opportunity!
Hope you guys enjoy it, have a nice weekend shooting some ducks!
As we promised to our community, we're going to post quick updates at the end of each month to show you what we’re working on in the development of Relic Hunters Legend. Lucy and Mark talked a little bit about the latest news on our last Livestream (you can check it out here) but we'll go into detail in this post.
We listened to our alpha players who gave us a lot of valuable feedback and we decided to make some changes:
Party Transitions
We were having some issues with Party transitions between missions: sometimes parties wouldn’t load after a mission ended and players would get stuck at the loading screen; other times some of the party members wouldn’t be able to join a mission. We’ve already fixed this for the next update!
Adventure System
Our Story missions are single-player only, so players needed to leave their parties to start them. This introduced a lot of friction to the multiplayer experience.
Since implementing multiplayer Story missions would be very expensive and might not even be worth it, we’ve decided to make it easier for players to enter these solo activities without having to leave their parties. Hopefully that will be enough, but we’ll keep listening to player feedback after the change is live.
You’ll be able to do any Secret Market story content by just entering the multiplayer hub talking to NPCs:
While one player does their solo Story mission, other party members can do whatever they want at the Secret Market while they wait - including starting their own Story content! We call this “phasing”, and effectively puts players into a solo instance of the Market while they complete their Story activities.
We will also allow you to start and track multiple Adventures at the same time.
And finally, we will allow party members to play solo Story missions outside of the Secret Market without leaving their parties as well. Players who are doing Story missions at another location will be marked as “In Another Activity” on the Social screen, and will re-join their Party as soon as the Story mission is over!
Backend Migration
We are moving all data and code from our existing backend service to another platform. This is very unfortunate, but there is no way around it. Our current backend platform will be shutting down next year, so we need to make the move.
This is a boring, technical and long process. Thankfully our Mysterious Strangers are giving us all the support we need to do it safely and as quickly as possible. Even then, this will take a lot of work, and will also require us to wipe all current save files from our Alpha players.
We apologize for this wipe, since it was not our intention, but unfortunately there is no other alternative at this point. So don’t get too attached to your perfectly-rolled Legendaries :(
Second Act of the Story of Relic Hunters Legend
We’re working on Act 2 of the Story of Relic Hunters Legend. On the previous update our Alpha players were able to play the entire First Act and the feedback has been great! We are almost done with Act 2, but we won’t release it for Alpha players - both Act 2 and Act 3 will be a surprise that will not be spoiled until release!
New Maps and Assets - Hilltown and Old Town
We’ll have new Regions for our players to explore, such as Hilltown, which is part of the new Act 2 content.
Distraction Game mode prototype done
We’ve finished the prototype of the new Game Mode: Distraction. In this game mode waves of enemies patrol around areas and seek out nearby players to attack. The players need to keep an “Alert Meter” full by defeating enemies all the time. It's a super intense game mode! However, the player can't get too distracted by the waves of enemies and lose focus of the Elite enemies that appear randomly and that matters most for the Alert Meter progression! The lowest the Alert Meter bar is at the end of the mission, the smaller the rewards.
Defense Game Mode prototype done
Defense Game Mode is in development. In this game mode, you will need to defend your Loot Chests from waves of enemies that spawn on the different lanes of the map. Special “Gatecrashers” enemies will spawn and move directly towards the Chests to destroy them. Regular enemies will also appear, but their focus will be distracting and defeating players to help the Gatecrashers reach the chests. Players must focus on taking down the Gatecrashers to advance to the next rounds, but they need to find the best strategy to make it work without losing their Chests!
New SFX and VO
More sound effects have been added to our stores, resources, chests, and scoreboard. New Enemy voice overs were also implemented.
New Enemies and more variations of Kami
We created new enemies and new variations of Kami! Increasing enemy variety in the game is one of our priorities, and hopefully you will get plenty of different baddies to shoot at when the game is released!
Gear Score Rank Skins
We wanted to make player progression more fun and visually exciting! We’re implementing Gear Score Rank Skins: whenever you reach a new Gear Score Rank (such as Common I or Rare I) you will get a visual upgrade for that Hunter! The cool thing about this is that you are not locked into a specific look - you can mix and match pieces, change their colors individually, and have your Hunters always look the way you want them to.
New Chat Tabs and overall improvements
We improved our player experience with the Global Chat, now they’re able to talk only to their party, whisper to their friends and look for a group to play with! We will also have a Trade chat in the future, and implement spam protection on public channels.
We fixed a lot of bugs that our players found in the previous update, such as:
Fixed getting stuck after the Kami Queen battle, even if the Champion was defeated.
Fixed the Kami Queen not using some of her skills. She will now summon several Kami Kaze during the battle and become stronger when at low health.
Fixed the Cobran Captain dealing only 1 damage with their attacks.
Fixed Lt. Susan’s shotgun only being shot at a very close range.
Fixed a bug where some achievements were not unlocked when getting some specific legendary weapons or gear.
Fixed Jimmy losing his accessories after unequipping them.
Fixed bug where weapons stopped working at Coldstone Peaks missions.
Fixed issue that prevented players from exiting the Scoreboard if their Ultimate Skill was triggered right when the Mission was ending
Fixed an issue where gamepad input would stop working on the map screen if you moved your mouse while in gamepad mode.
Fixed various visual bugs.
Fixed various SFX issues.

So, what's new in Relic Hunters Legend?
Well, you're going to face a whole new game from what you were used to, and here's the ~ small ~ list of new features implemented to date:
Now our players can enjoy more than 10 hours of gameplay to complete all of the Main Adventures and Side Adventures, plus all of the multiplayer Missions in the first act.
After complete the first two Story missions our players will be able to watch the new introduction cutscene. It’s super awesome!
Now you have your Journal screen to choose which Adventure (quests) you want to play! Besides the main Adventures that tell the story of Seven, there are 8 side Adventures with small fun stories, including characters like Biu and Panzer.
After you clear 9 regular Missions, you unlock the Special Missions, which rotate every 20 minutes and provide guaranteed rewards and higher difficulty! Also, you can talk with every Hunter in the galaxy or chill out only with your friends with the new chat system!
Now you can make your own build for your Hunter and enhace your battle style. Active skills are no longer all available from level 1 - you’ll need to unlock them as you level up.
Tons of new items including Legendaries, Exotics, Augmented, and Set items to collect in your adventures! Conquer the best of the best and be the most powerful Hunter in the galaxy.
With a lot more interesting effects for Gear and Weapons to strengthen your builds!
Now you have the place to find your quests, friends, buy new equipment at Shops and keep your items in your Storage.
Invite your friends from your Steam Account to play with you! You will stick together after missions are completed and can keep playing together.
The customizations are already implemented with color palettes for every hunter! Jimmy has a few test cosmetics at the moment, including hats, hair, clothes, and accessories.
We have Emotes and Emojis inside the game now, which you can combine to express yourself in multiplayer.
You can get guaranteed rewards such as equipment and materials after completing the stages of the game.
Now we have Chests and Resource Nodes for you to find and grab loot and materials! They can be found in the world in many ways: as a reward for beating a mission, guarded by some Ducans, or even hidden away in some tight weird corner of the map. Chests and Resource Nodes are a new way to get some nice loot and materials for your Hunters! The Regular chests and the Resources also respawn every 24h.
Now we have a Galaxy Screen! Before, you only had access to The Planet Cradle, where you could find the already known missions and hubs (like Galyno Desert, Secret Market, Peaks Blockade, etc). Now you can choose between the Cradle and yet-to-be-developed secrets. In the future, we hope to expand our universe even further so we added this very special screen.
A new and polished MapScreen has been made. More details and even more beautiful with 5 new Missions for you to explore, with different scenarios for you to defeat the enemies that will surround you.
Now we have four game modes implemented for you to enjoy alongside the quests and side quests that you’re able to get on Secret Market with our fellow Hunters.
New bosses and enemies were implemented with different behaviors and abilities. Tired of fighting the Ducan Demolisher over and over again? We already have The Riotbreakers, Lt Susan, Cobran Captain and Kami Queen done!
All our playable characters now have their own unique Ultimate Skill implemented! Go punch Ducans with Pinkyy’s Gauntlets, freeze enemies with Seven’s vortex, Shoot them like a crazy hurricane with Jimmy or enjoy some Beats and gain buffs with Raff!
Complete achievements and increase your Rebel Rank! This will give you special benefits to ease and further your hunting experience, like increasing the size of your storage, rewarding specific gear and weapons to show out your hunter experience, adding extra load-outs, or even giving you extra bounties to spend at the Market.
Gather with your friends while you prepare your hunters for the battle on our new lobby system, getting easier to manage the party.
At the end of each mission you can check who was the MVP among your friends and endorse your favorite teammates.
Many new music tracks and sound effects
Visual improvements: with new visual effects and lighting
Account Backend system: you can create your account and all of your progress is saved on the cloud. It is no longer possible to cheat your items and persistent progress in the game, which will open the way for one of our most exciting features soon: player Trading! For now, you don't need to insert your real email address to create an account, but further on the development this will be needed! We'll keep you updated about it :)
There are a few annoying things that we already know about this new update, but we feel like we should deploy it to you sooner rather than later. We are very excited to see what you think about it, but we’re already looking into it to fix it for the next update!
Also, for you to be able to test the capstones of your skill trees, the Rebel Rank 5 is giving you a lot more skill points for you to spend and test out new builds.
So, without further ado, here are the list of the Known Issues that you can face in your gameplay:
===========
Loading times become progressively longer as you play and eventually crash. We recommend closing and re-opening the game every 60 minutes.
Getting stuck on "Party Transition" is common. ALT+F4 out of the game if it happens.
Sometimes invisible holes show up on the ground. Don't bother to screenshot the holes because they are random.
Soft lock sometimes when opening menus during cutscenes
If the party leader leaves during a Skirmish mission, the mission may not advance to the next round
The final fight of the Alpha (lvl 22 Cobran Captain) is very bugged and broken and will be fixed on a future patch
These quality-of-life Features WILL come soon, no need to suggest them:
===========
Item Compare functionality
Complete Stats Screen
"Lock" Item / "Favorite" Item functionality
Mass Recycle
Auto-Recycle with Loot Filter
Storage tabs
Storage sorting
Storage search
For now the level cap is 15, but at the final launch the máx. level will be 60!
This build is a huge step for us and It'll be the last chance to make big changes into Relic Hunters Legend if it's needed. So we're asking for our alpha supporters to help us and give us as much feedback as possible for us to keep developing a great game. You can make it on our Steam Forums or in our Discord Community, take screenshots, record gameplay, the way you're going to do it is your choice but we really need to see with our own eyes how this experience is going for you.
Participate in our Discord Community, it’s easier to talk to us, give us feedback and share experiences with other Hunters there!
So what do you think? We hope you appreciate what you’re going to see and experience, we’re still working on new features and optimizations but we’re anxious to hear your thoughts about it, so we can continue to shape this game with our awesome community!
This year we’ve been keeping a low profile which is really uncommon for our standards. Most of you already know why: we’ve talked about the future of Relic Hunters here. But here’s the gist of it: we have a new partner that is funding the rest of the game’s development, and this partnership will be fully announced and revealed next year, alongside the new launch date for Legend! Now we can rest assured that Relic Hunters Legend will be released just the way we’ve dreamed of.
The Relic Hunters are getting ready!
Relic Hunters Legend has improved a lot since our update in February. Our Shooter RPG now has almost 8 hours of gameplay with lots of story, quests, side-quests, rewards, and new items for our players to collect. While we can't give as many details as we wanted to - let's not spoil your experience - we can assure you that you're going to have a lot of fun!
Our Systems have been improved as well. Soon our players will have a Relic Account that will save their progress and will prevent cheaters from messing up with the game. We have our social features working and our players will be able to play together and easily find new people to join their missions!
Our studio has grown too, now we have almost 30 people in our team and we’ll continue searching for new talents to join this adventure with us! We’ve changed our website and we’ll be sharing some tips and knowledge about game development, game art, and other topics in our new blog.
Our Zoom meetings are starting to get crowded and even more fun!
2020 has been a crazy and rough year for all of us, we hope everyone is safe and your family and friends are well too. We have had the privilege to be 100% remote since the day Rogue was founded, so we’ve managed to keep things working smoothly around here. We’re super excited for what’s yet to come and eager to reveal the good stuff to you.
We couldn’t be more grateful for all the love and support this community has shown us through all the hardships and achievements that we’ve had over the past few years. We would never have gotten this far without you and we hope that you continue to follow our media for updates.
Happy Holidays everyone, hope you have a good time!
We’ve been quiet for a while. In fact, we’ve been quiet for longer than we have ever been since this community was founded in 2015 - the year we released Relic Hunters Zero.
Our silence was entirely due to good reasons, though, and today I’d like to share some of the good news with you.
So gather around everyone because we're about to reveal our plans
As you know, we’ve been pouring our hearts and souls into this project for 3 years now. It is a gigantic project for indie standards: a sprawling online game with several characters, deep storytelling and lore, and dozens of features and mechanics. It is our dream game, and dreams are not easy to achieve.
This year was supposed to be our deadline: we would have to release whatever we had into Early Access and hope for the best. If the game didn’t do well, our dream was in risk of being cut short. We’d have to let people go. We’d be back to our situation in 2017, before Kickstarter, when we had no money and just a handful of people trying to make this dream a reality.
What if we don’t find any partner? ;(
It was a daunting challenge, but one we were ready to face anyway. Rebels don’t need to fight alone, though, and sometimes being brave is being willing to accept that you need backup.
We’re happy to announce that we found the perfect backup, and our rebel crew has grown. We have just signed with a partner that will help us fund the rest of the game’s development, and help us bring Relic Hunters to millions of fans around the world!
For now, they will remain anonymous. Let’s call them “Mysterious Strangers”. This partnership will be fully announced and revealed next year, so stay tuned.
The Mysterious Strangers coming to help us develop an even better Relic Hunters Legend
Here’s how everything else is looking for the next 2 years of Relic Hunters:
The game won’t be coming out on Steam Early Access this year. We will announce the new release date next year;
We are still in full control of the game and the IP. This is still a game owned and shaped by its community;
The Founders program will no longer be available for new Founders. We will stop selling Founder packs on August 31st, at 12:00 Pacific Time. All of our promises, perks and privileges to pre-existing Founders will be kept.
We have no exclusive platform or console deals in place. Relic Hunters will come out in as many stores and consoles as possible;
We are still building the game as Free-to-Play;
Our team size is almost doubling, from 17 to 30 people. This means more quality, more content, and more love being put into the game;
We now have the resources to deliver our full vision for Relic Hunters on launch day, instead of having to rely on Early Access being successful;
There are new Comics underway - we have 60 pages done and even more in development;
Even more secret cool stuff coming soon!
New Alpha updates
So, if you’re a Founder, you haven’t seen a new Alpha update since PAX East in February. This is also for a good reason: we are finishing the entire first Act of the game, and we wanted to wrap it up entirely before presenting it to you.
We felt that releasing the first Act little by little would prevent you from having a fresh perspective on the experience as a whole. We want you to have a different point of view than we have, so we decided to hold off until a big chunk of the game is done before allowing you all in. We want feedback and we are prepared to make big changes in response to your opinions and feelings about the first act. It is between 5-8 hours of gameplay and it is coming this year.
Panzer and Biu are being developed and they’re excited to start their adventures in the Legend’s Galaxy!
As always, we still offer full refunds with no questions asked for any and all of our Founders. If you feel like this is taking too long, we understand and accept it. Just keep in mind that the Founders program will close to new purchases on August 31st at 12:00 Pacific Time.
We would never have gotten this far without you. We will be forever grateful for all the love and support this community has shown us through all the hardships and achievements of the past 3 years.
Keep following us on our Social Media and participate on our Discord Channel, we’re always there to talk and share some details about the development of our projects.
It's been too long since our last update, but I hope it was worth the wait - we finally have our Story content available for the first time EVER!
Meet The Professor and many new characters
This is a very brief preview, showing the opening of the game and the two first Story missions. It should last between 40-60 minutes to go through.
Combat Changes
This is also the official release of our Combat 2.0 Update. It brings a LOT of core changes to how combat, skills and enemies work. You can get the full rundown on our last update about it.
Team up and set up some cool Combos!
New Hunter: Seven
Last but not least, we have a new character in the game, with their full skill kit: Seven, the Time-Traveller.
Seven can be customized by you when the game starts, choosing gender and Star Sign. In the future, Star Signs will be meaningful for gameplay - but for now they are just flavor, pick whatever you want!
Seven charging the Maelstrom skill
Here's a rundown of Seven's kit:
Blink
Seven blinks forward in time. Has 3 Uses. Blinking through enemies marks them with Paradox Mark.
Shift Strike
Seven jumps forward in time to punch an enemy, dealing 150 Water damage. Marked enemies are Frozen for 3 seconds. This skill is an Elemental Combo Detonator.
Re:Alignment
Recovers Seven’s Shields instantly. All nearby Marked enemies explode with Water damage. All nearby enemies with Paradox Mark take 100 Water damage.
Paradox Mark
Enemies hit by Seven’s skills may receive a Paradox Mark which reduces their damage output by 30% and triggers special effects from some of Seven’s skills.
Maelstrom
Seven charges a powerful void rift that pulls enemies into it before exploding. This skill can be charged to become more powerful. Pulls enemies in for 1 second and Mark every one with Paradox Mark. The explosion Primes enemies for a Combo. The explosion deals 100/140/180 Water damage.
This year is just beginning!
The dangerous Cobran Captain!
There is much, MUCH more to come. Team Artemis is working on the Enemies Update, which will grow the enemy roster to 26 different enemies (that's right, TWENTY SIX!).
Team Voyager is working hard on story content for our Beta release, which will be about 8-10 hours of gameplay and continue the time-travelling adventures of Seven and the Relic Hunters. You will meet new allies, new enemies, face the fearsome Supreme Commander Krek and the mysterious Timekeepers. All in due time.
Time...
It's time for you to download the Update right now on Steam!
