Hail Apprentices! We know you're all busy with War Preparations, but the Royal Commander wishes to relay some new information.

Main additions / changes:
  • Black Screen at start of the game: We believe is possibly caused by some old GPU's that have hard time loading the game. This issue should now be fixed, but if it happens again, please let us know.

  • Skip function is now available! This enables you to skip dialogue until an important story choice comes up. It could also be adjusted in the Setting section. (Located at the bottom left of the screen.)

  • Now along with left-click, you could also proceed with the story dialogue using the spacebar! We know, this is pretty expected for VN's, so we apologize for not getting it in sooner!

  • Fire is with or against you! The Cinder Guard previously had fewer dialogue opportunities than other Guards, so we've added a couple more! But be warned, if you thought it was hard to Talk to her before... Well, you'll see.

  • CLIMAX!!! We've updated a pivotal choice during the final battle. Players complained that it was a forced choice so we made it more interactive with additional consequences to help the story flow closer to how we envisioned it.

  • Gallery! Bug saying "Click to interact" with non-interactable images in gallery has been fixed!

  • Missing Achievements are now fixed!

  • Typos and other small tweaks!

Thanks to all the Apprentices that gave us feedback! While we may not be able to accommodate every request as a small (two guys, one gal) studio, we certainly listen to every request. If you haven't left a review yet, please do. (It give Stars Reach Castle POWER!!)

Faulty Apprentice contains more secrets than the Dark Elf prisoner, so don't be shy joining our discord seeking aide from your fellow Apprentices! On the other side of the battlefield, if you've already completed the goals of your apprenticeship, please join to help out new apprentices!

Faulty Apprentice - AGLstudioArt
Quick as a cat, the Yellow Tabi races off into the trees. A good number of Apprentices wanted to settle in for the night and enjoy a drink, but seeing as they were a team, they all joined in the hunt. However, keeping up with a cat proved quite the challenge. Near impossible even...

Then suddenly a seductive silky voice slips through the trees as a Dark Elf wielding a dagger steps into the edge of the Apprentices eye line. Her cloak flows in the wind as her eyes pierce the darkness.

Mysterious Voice: "Are you boys lost? Now that war has been declared, it's not safe to be wandering around at night, yes?"

Before the Apprentices could respond, as suddenly as she arrived, like smoke from a burnt match, she was gone... And so was the Yellow Cat, leaving the Apprentices completely and utterly lost.

With the sun already setting, and Stars Reach Castle seemingly somewhere down the path, the Apprentices take a moment to reflect on the last several days. Since they were so fond of Hilde, their hoppity guard and navigator, the first place the Apprentices wanted to visit on the way to the castle was her hometown, the Bunny Burrow. While they didn't get to meet Hildes sisters, brothers, cousins, 2nd cousins, aunts, uncles, and good ol' gammy, they did get to meet the Traveling Merchant, Mavie!

This winged woman and seller of wares swept away the Apprentice's hearts with her warm smile. Not only was this helpful harpy beautiful, but she was willing to lend a hand and offered to give the Apprentices a ride. Which that gladly took! However, it was in the opposite direction...

Arriving in the town of Brindle, the Apprentices found a tavern flooding with alcohol. Well, not literally flooding, but the corks on the kegs were busted open like a broken dam. There was one woman that was dumping drinks into her mouth like it was a contest. Brea was her name, and beverages were her game, but when she offered the boys a beer, a strange-looking stranger stepped in and offered the Apprentices something strange.

Everyone has heard of the term, "half-elf" but this woman gives the term a new definition. Was she a human? Was she a Dark Elf? And was that some sort of mechanical device where her heart is supposed to be? The Apprentices had no idea, but when she offered them mushrooms, a few Apprentices thought it was a good idea to join in the experiment. For science of course.

The Apprentices had a lot of fun that night. Maybe too much fun. Especially the ones that took mushrooms, because one of them went as far as stripping down into their birthday suit and ran naked through the streets. This, of course, ended the party because the entire party was arrested by the famous Hundred Quest Knight, Sir Quintus.

Being thrown into the black cells of Fort Isaac, the Apprentice found a black feline. This mysterious Rogue offered to break the boys out but they decided to decline. Soon after the Fort was caught off guard and ambushed by Goblins. Kidnapping the Apprentices, the Goblins could have done whatever they wanted, but instead of putting the Apprentices in a Goblin prison, in typical Goblin fashion, they began fighting amongst themselves and provided the perfect escape opportunity.

Making their exit through the Goblin Town tunnels, the Apprentices eventually found a rope ladder and climbed up to freedom. After finding themselves in a forest, they found something else. Or should I say, someone else? The most beautiful bowman they ever say was before them. However, the Apprentices didn't have long to appreciate the view because, before long, the elven archer turned her longbow on them.

That's when the Apprentices found themselves out of the frying pan, and in the fire. Or perhaps out of the fridge and into the freezer? Suddenly caught between a Dark Greffen, a Knight and the gigantic Goblin. Not including the hoards of Goblins in hiding! Swords were swinging, arrows were flying and spells were swirling. However, there just weren't enough Apprentices to hold back the tide of Goblins...

After a crushing defeat, the Apprentices were forced to retreat to the homely house of Miss Crandle. Even though they felt bad for failing the Commander, they were happy to reunite with their friends. Everyone was there, and even one more! While the Apprentices were answering a call from nature, they found a stray cat. Or should I say they lost a stray cat, because immediately after finding the girl, she ran off...

As their eyelids grew heavy, and their minds wandered, they couldn't help but think of what life at Stars Reach would be like. Even though they have no skills and no job, the Apprentices go to bed with dreams of becoming a hero. Or at least finding an apprenticeship they can actually finish...

The End.

With the Apprentices against an overwhelming number of Goblins, they were completely and utterly decimated...

They knew this was by far the greatest challenge they've ever faced, and while they could have hidden in the back and let others do the fighting for them, they didn't. The Apprentices chose to fight! They fought bravely, they fought honorably, but in the end, they lost... Slipping and sliding down the mountain to escape the onslaught of Goblins, the Apprentices run to the closest place they can find.

While it possessed the general qualities of a welcoming home, to say the Crandle House was scrapped together would be generous. The craftsmanship was well below Elf, Dwarf, Human or any commonfolk standard. It was almost as though this poor excuse for a structure was built by-- Not that you would say it to their face, but it was almost as though this house was built by an Orc? No-no Orc houses are built with iron for defensive purposes... This house must have been built by a... Troll?

Upon reaching the front door the Apprentices presumptions were proved correct. Perhaps if they were Trolls themselves, they would find some of this female's qualities attractive, but as it were, she was just plain big and scary. Towering twice as tall as the nearest Apprentice, this temptress of a Troll meant business.

Miss Crandle: "What you want?"

Even though one Apprentice was so scared of the mighty women a pinch of piddle trickled down his trousers, they all stood as tall and proud as they could. The Commander said they should retreat here, did she not? As doubt crossed the mind of each Apprentice, and then as Miss Crandle stone-faced through the silence, doubt crossed their minds again. Then the most welcoming, warming, comforting, and wonderful sound the Apprentices could have heard rang out.

Hilde: "Hey there, sugar plum!"

Then the Apprentices were met with the familiar faces the had longed to see all along. Hilde the Guard, Mavie the Merchant, Janessa the Alchemist and Brea the brave. All were there and all was well as they welcomed the weary Apprentices into the abode.

Thanks to Mavie's stop at Brindle, her barrels of beer were full and the food was plentiful. Roasted pepper pheasant, creamed mashed potatoes with bacon on top, grilled grayling soaked in lemon, hardy green beans with fresh crisped onions, all with savory gravy to be smeared upon everything at your choice. But that wasn't counting dessert...

Sweet rolls, plumpin-pumpkin pie, granny apple tarts, cranberry cream, and gooey chocolate brownies, all baked to perfection. Drinking, feasting, and drinking some more, while no one could keep up with Miss Crandle's consumption, everyone was trying to!

Upon the intake of such massive amounts of liquid libations, the Apprentices were "called to nature" as it were. Given Misses Crandle's house had no bathroom the young men were forced to literally answer the call in nature. After going outside the relieved young men realize they were being watched!

Mysterious Mage: "Kyah!"

POOF!! As soon as the Apprentices sighted the mysterious sage, she was gone. Coincidentally a Yellow Cat runs off. Seemingly too serendipitous of a situation, the Apprentices find themselves at a crossroads. Should they chase after this mysterious cat or stay and drink with their companions?

While the security of a secluded tunnel seemed a safe idea, this was an adventure, and what's an adventure without a little risk! The cliff face may have been fierce, but the Apprentices were formidable so they chose to climb the mountain. Rock by rock, stone by stone, they forged upward and onward to the top!

Reaching the summit of what appears to be the Ancient Step, the Apprentice's found they were in a situation they weren't quite expecting. Sure, they were a little surprised the flying shadow was a Dark Greffen instead of a dragon as it is drawn on the map, but that wasn't it. There was also a female knight with golden hair wearing shining silver armor and wielding what is unmistakably a magic sword standing next to the Greffen as though they were companions.

But that wasn't the most surprising part of what was happening. What caught the Apprentices off guard was the furious looking female was speaking with an enormous Goblin. Like, a really-really big Goblin. Bigger than you've ever seen by far and wielding some sort of strange ax with trumpet horns protruding out of it.

Before the Apprentices were noticed by the strange delegates, this is what they heard...

Shining Knight: "King Grundle, while I cannot forgive you for what you have already done, I must try to stop you from not only destroying your followers but destroying yourself. If you align with Vaultes, he will dispose of you the moment you are no longer of use to him. You must see this."

King Grundle: "Commander Angeline, the only thing I want to see is what's underneath all that armor you're wearing hyuh hu-hu-hu."

Dark Greffen: "Grrrrr!"

Commander Angeline: "....."

King Grundle: "I guess the stories are true you have a heart of ice. You can't even take a joke. I wonder what you'll think of this then. PARTY TIME!!"

Those final words must have been the signal for some kind of ambush because, from the other side of the cliff, hoards of Goblins come rushing out! Without showing the slightest bit of fear or surprise the girl with golden hair looks over to the Apprentices as though she was aware of their presence the entire time.

Commander Angeline: "You are right on time, Apprentices, just as Durandall told me you would be. Now take up arms and get revenge on the Goblins that humiliated you. Just leave the Goblin King to me."

The Commander needs 30 Apprentices to win this battle!
Comment with your weapon choice and describe how you defeated your goblin adversary!

Faulty Apprentice - AGLstudioArt
Even though the trees were too thick to see through, the sound of beautiful singing slips through like a fish through water. To say the voice was easy on the ears would be an understatement. The voice was soft, elegant, and alluring. Even though the Apprentices couldn't understand the words of the song, the Apprentices couldn't get enough of it. Pushing through foliage, and pushing through fatigue, the Apprentices pushed forward in search of the source of this mystery. At lease until the music stopped...

The breeze was still blowing, and the birds were still chirping, but the song was indeed no more. Suspecting they were getting close, the Apprentices decided to tread softly. Creeping, sneaking and snooping along, they moved as silently as possible towards the last known source of the serenade. Then peering through the pines into an open clearing, the Apprentices spied a sight they had never seen outside the scroll-books.

Flowing silver hair, bronze skin, and features far too shapely to be human. This woman could only be... an Elf! Everyone has heard of that Elves used to be very common around Thaelyn, but ever since the war between Light and Dark, they have disappeared. Some say they were all destroyed, some say they returned to their homeland, but the truth is no one really knows. Well, maybe someone knows, but certainly no one in this humble group of Apprentices. Except maybe that guy.

Distracted by thoughts of fantasy folklore and the sight of such an elegant Elf, the Apprentices didn't notice that there was an old man wearing dirty rags for robes beside them. Not only that, but he appeared to be spying on the unsuspecting maiden!

Dirty Old Man: "Yes, now, the other legging--"

Dirty Old Man: "By my beard! What are you lads doing here!? I thought you'd be-- Hold on, yes... if you're here now, then that means."

The bearded old man opens one of his many scroll-books and begins flipping pages rapidly till he apparently comes to the one he was looking for.

Dirty Old Man: "This could be a disaster! If she catches me spying on her way out here, it could ruin everything. Sorry lads, but I'll need you to take the fall for this one. Just bob and weave and you will all be fine... probably. Farewell!"

With a sudden pop of light and smoke, the old man in odd clothing disappeared before the Apprentices' eyes. While it was amazing to see a magic spell for the first time, there was no time to enjoy it, for the Elven enchantress had become aware of their presence.

Elven Archer: "What was that? Is-is someone there? Hey! Who are you! And you, and you! What are all you boys doing out here?"

With their presence suddenly discovered, the old man's disappearance, and the jig seeming to be up, the Apprentices just stood there like a deer in the lantern light. A few of them pointed at each other, a few said words like "the old man" or "we were lost", or "your singing". But in the end, the Elf girl had her own idea of what was going on. And she wasn't afraid to let the Apprentices know.

Elven Archer: "You were spying on me, weren't you!? Gods, why are boys such perverts! I'll skewer you alive you- you DIRTYROTTENIMMATUREPERVERTMANPIGS!!"

With the Elf's rambling of rage, she draws her bow and begins firing a flurry of arrows at the Apprentices! Having no choice but to flee in terror, lest they be "skewered alive," the young men fled into the forest bobbing and weaving as the old man advised them.

After an hour of running for their lives, the party of alleged perverts makes it out of their frightening forest experience. And aside from several scrapes, scratches, and bruises, they were relatively unharmed.

Feeling safe for the moment, the Apprentices decide to inspect their surroundings. Seeming to be at the base of a mountain with a tunnel carved into the stone, the party sees two options before them. They can take shelter inside the tunnel, or climb the mountain to get a better view of the area.

What will the Apprentices choose?

Deciding the Rope Ladder was the better course, the Apprentices make their ascent. Climbing upward and upward, the smell of flowers and foliage becomes more present. Even dried leaves occasionally fall down from the opening above giving the Apprentices hope they will make it out of that filthy, fart-smelling, and forsaken Goblin Town. So upon reaching the top, the sensation of fresh air on their skin and sun on their faces felt absolutely wonderful. Almost as wonderful as the singing voice that cam wafting through the forest.

Speaking of trees, looking back at the ladder's exit, the Apprentices see they were let out of some sort of oaken orifice. The wooden stump was so old and misshapen, it seemed to have a face on its front like a jack-o-lantern. Whether the face had grown that way naturally or perhaps carved long ago, it was undiscernable.

Temporarily distracted by the odd-shaped oak, the beautiful singing voice once again made its way into the Apprentice's ears. Looking up, down and all around to find the source of the noise, they discovered something quite the opposite.

Pines crack and moan as they lean from the oncoming wind. Dirt and leaves come flying at the Apprentices forcing them to shield their eyes from the rushing debris. Then quick as a flash but black as night, a giant winged shadow passes overhead. Icy chills run down the Apprentice's spines and an even colder mist falls over the forest. As a frozen silence settles over the scenery, the serenade of song once again picks up and floats into the air.

With thick trees all around and no navigator, the Apprentices seemingly have only two options on which way they should go...

Will they follow the soft singing voice or the swift and silent shadow?

Mysterious Rogue: "You are really listening to that Goblin's lies? Suit yourself. I smell trouble coming so I'm out of here. Later nerds!"

Quick as a cat and silent as a snake, the mysterious Rogue picks the Cell Door lock and races off into the dark hallway.

Chicken Thief: "Don't you-sa listen to dat Rogue, you-sa make wise-good descision sticking with me-sa. By the way, me-sa name Chicken Thief. Me-sa big important Goblin so we-sa not have to wait much longer. Me-sa friends coming to break me out quick-fast."

While the words "friends coming to break me out" gave the Apprentices a bad feeling, what they heard next gave them a worse one... Suddenly a loud explosion rocks the fortress as shouts of terror and pain cry out. After what you guess was a short battle the sounds of marching echoes down the stairs.

Thats when you realized, you were tricked...

With only Chicken Thief's laughs for a warning, a swarm of goblin's raid the prison cell throwing each and every Apprentice into a dirty burlap sack. One Apprentice manages to confront the Goblin Prisoner before being abducted, exclaiming "But we took you at your word! You pinky-promised us!"

Chicken Thief: "Dumb-dumb man-boys. Don't you-sa have eyeballs? Goblin's don't have pinkies! But we-sa do haves middle fingers!!"

The Goblin betrayer dances around shoving his rude hand gesture at each Apprentice filled sac as it is carried off. However before the Apprentices could shout curses in return, they were beaten repeatedly until everything went black...

After an indiscriminate amount of time, you are awoken to the sound of gruff and grizzled voices arguing with one another.

Young Orc: "You always get invited to parties, Bilgorg! Let me bring Apprentices to King Grundle. It's my turn."

Bilgorg: "You get invited when you earn invitation! It was my idea to raid Fort Isaac while soldiers were away, so me gets prize."

Young Orc: "But it was me that picked which Goblins to be in raid! I deserve chance to impress King Grundle!"

Bilgorg: "Shut your pie-hole or I'll shut it for you!"

Young Orc: "You think I'm afraid of you cause you won a fights in the ring? Let me show you how we fight in the streets!"

Goblins: "Oooooo!! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!"

With the goblins rushing to surround the two orcs, the Apprentices find themselves completely unrestrained and unguarded. Taking advantage of the opportunity, they all sneakily step out and make their way through the maze of goblin tunnels.

After hours of dodging search parties and looking for an exit, the Apprentices come to a fork in the path. One direction leads into a stone tunnel obviously not made by goblins, and the other is a rope ladder leading upwards that smells like flowers.

What will they choose: The Rope Ladder or the Stone Tunnel?
