PC Building Simulator - WiZZyWiGG
Hello PC Builders,

Apologies for the bugs some players have been experiencing since the big update last week, while we knew we had made some big changes to the game some of these issues we just never saw coming. Thanks to everyone who sent in save games and log files, as these have helped us fix up many of the issues for today's update.

The update today contains the following…

Build v0.8.1.1 Highlights

Save Game Improvements
To try and improve save game stability between versions and allow us to better diagnose save issues we have made some adjustments to the save game system:
  • A backup version of your save game is created when a new version of the game is detected - these won’t be visible in the save menu but will exist in the saves folder.
  • If an error occurs during loading a save game you will now receive a message telling you this (and stopping you from going any further) rather than allowing you to continue as normal and it being rewritten by autosave - this means when you send us a save game we can see the error being generated without the risk of it being lost due to being saved over.

CPU Air Cooler Rotation
Eagle eyed players may have noticed in pre-release videos there was an option to pick the orientation of an air cooler when installing on a CPU. This was disabled ahead of launch but has now been re-enabled to allow for further feedback and testing as we get quite a few requests about this!

New Parts

EVGA AIO Water Coolers
The EVGA CLC 120, 240 and 280 are now available to include in your builds!

Cryorig AIO Water Coolers
From Cryorig this update includes their A40, A40 Ultimate and A80 AIO coolers.

SilverStone Water Coolers
The TD03-LITE, TD03-SLIM, TD02-LITE and TD02-SLIM AIO coolers from SilverStone’s Tundra series are now available to build with.

Raijintek ORCUS 240 Water Cooler
If you like your RGB on your AIO coolers then the ORCUS 240 is going to be a must have in any build!

Raijintek IRIS 12 Case Fan
The 120mm IRIS 12 case fan includes full RGB support and pairs nicely with the ORCUS 240!

NZXT S340 Elite Case
Until now only the Hyper Beast version of the S340 Elite existed in the game but from today you will be able to build with the standard version in its Black, Black + Blue and Black + Red options.

Spanish Language Support
With today's update we have added support for Spanish, we appreciate the Spanish community's patience on this!

Full Patch Notes:

  • Save game handling changes.
  • Enabled CPU Air Cooler orientation option.
  • New AIO Water Coolers from EVGA, Cryorig, SilverStone and Raijintek.

Build v0.8.0 Highlights

New Partner - Antec

As announced earlier today we have officially welcomed Antec to the PC Building Simulator family so you can expect further parts from them in the future, the initial batch of products can now be found on our roadmap and from the update today you will be able to use the Antec DF500 case.

AIO Water CPU Cooling

All In One CPU water cooling has arrived! This update brings the initial implementation of support for AIO CPU water coolers to the game which includes CPU coolers from Cooler Master (MasterLiquid 120/240) and NZXT (Kraken M22/X42/X52/X62/X72).
There are further coolers on the way so as always take a look at our roadmap for future parts that will be appearing in the game.

Support for a brand new part type is a big feature and has meant updating all the cases in the game so there is a good chance you will bump into some bugs when using these new parts, please do continue to report any in the usual fashion so we can fix up any issues

New Cables

The internal PC cables of PC Building Simulator have well documented ‘issues’, these issues have been a thorn in the development teams side for as long as we can remember so we decided to overhaul their code as we had to get them to work with the water cooling parts anyway.
Functionality wise you will most likely not notice a difference, some previous issues will be fixed but there is just as much chance that new ones will occur but the difference now is we actually have a good way of fixing any future issues with cables.

The more interesting feature of this work is that we can now customise cables! So we have added over 100 new cable options to allow you to customise your builds even further.

Again, this is a major rework so please do report any bugs you have with this new feature.

AMD Ryzen 2 CPUs

AMDs 2nd generation Ryzen CPUs are now available to build with! This includes the Ryzen 5 Six Core 2600/2600x & Ryzen 7 Eight Core 2700/2700x variants.

Full Patch Notes:
  • New Case - Antec DF500.
  • New Case - SilverStone PS14.
  • New AIO CPU Water Coolers - Cooler Master MasterLiquid 120/240 & NZXT Kraken M22/X42/X52/X62/X72.
  • Rewritten Cable code - To allow us to fix issues moving forward.
  • New Cable Customisation Options - These can be selected by the new Cables menu in your inventory.
  • Internal cable connections now have their correct models.
  • New CPUs - AMD Ryzen 2nd Generation CPUs (Ryzen 5 Six Core 2600/2600x & Ryzen 7 Eight Core 2700/2700x).
  • Added RGB enabled GIGABYTE AORUS SLI Bridges when building a SLI machine with 2x compatible GIGABYTE GPUs.
  • Updated all cases to allow AIO CPU water coolers to be installed where compatibility allows.
  • The PC status window in build mode can now be toggled on/off with the ‘Tab’ key.
  • SLI/Crossfire support is now listed on GPU information in the shop and inventory.
  • Changed how the PC Parts section of inventory works so that you should no longer build up a stock of useless case parts throughout the career mode.
  • Compressed Air now has audio!
  • The Cooling category in the shop and inventory has now been split up into CPU Cooling and Case Fans categories.
  • Motherboards that support both Kaby Lake and Skylake CPUs in real-life will now do so in the game.
  • Your currently held item is now displayed on screen when working on a PC (this will get made prettier at a later date).
  • Fixed the issue where case fans rotated when removed.
  • Fixed the issue where case fans installed facing the wrong way.
  • Fixed the PSU cover on the DG-8 series installing in the wrong place on these cases.
  • Fixed an issue where HB SLI bridges would remove when removing a PC from the storage cupboard.
  • Fixed the missing ‘auto’ tag on autosaves when playing in any non-English language.
  • Fixed SLI/Crossfire bridges not appearing in the RL07 case.
  • Fixed being unable to swap an underpowered PSU on jobs that require PC’s to have more power.
  • Fixed various ‘Will it Run’ issues that should reduce the amount of requirements not met flags when using similar hardware to what is needed.
  • Fixed an issue with maximum allowed budget jobs where the total updated incorrectly.
  • Reduced the new email SFX a bit.
  • Updated GPU/CPU data from 3DMark.

As mentioned a lot in these notes there are many new things in this build, so even with our internal testing there is still a chance of more issues than we would like, but please do report any you find so that we can fix up the important ones as soon as we can.

What’s Next?

Bug fixing mostly for a little while, plus adding more AIO CPU Coolers. We also plan to add Spanish language support fairly soon.

Job types will also be expanded to allow for the most recent features (Dual GPUs/Water Cooling) to become part of objectives, more story type missions are also being worked on.

Design and planning of Overclocking has begun, while this is some way off we are looking forward to getting this up and running!

Happy Water Cooling Building!

PC Building Simulator - WiZZyWiGG
Hello PC Builders,

Another week, another update. The team has been working non-stop going through feedback and bug reports while continuing to move the game forward so we can develop the core features planned on our roadmap.

This update includes the following highlights:

New Languages

The following new languages are now included from this update: French, German, Russian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese.

Further language options will be reviewed as we progress through Early Access and more will be added based on feedback and player statistics.

As we are still in Early Access there is likely to still be a few issues with these languages (text overlaps, strings still being in English etc.) but please do just report these as you would any other bugs.

Music Player Update

One of our most requested features since we launched has been ‘let us play our own music via the ingame music player!’ so with this update you can do just this.

The music player now allows you play the games soundtrack (which will expand in time), mp3 files locally on your (real) PC and even Internet Radio streams. There is a range of internet radio streams included by default but you can also add to and adjust this list via the txt file found in the \PC Building Simulator\Data\ folder.

Key Binding

We have added the ability to rebind the keys used in the game, you can find this option in the Options menu.
This should help anyone struggling with the default controls or just want more control over what keys they wish to use.

AMD RX Vega 56 & 64 arrive

The reference RX Vega 56 and RX Vega 64 GPUs from AMD have been added to the game with this update.

Full Patch Notes:
  • New languages - French, German, Russian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Updated Music Player - You can now play local mp3 files or internet radio streams via the ingame music player found on your PC.
  • Added the AMD RX Vega 56 & 64 GPU
  • Added the ability to rebind keys.
  • Updated 3DMark data for some GPU’s/configurations.
    #Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
Since the Dual-GPU update it was clear that some configuration data related to SLI/Crossfire was off, we have worked with 3DMark to adjust a range of GPU data to bring things back in line closer to reality.
  • 3DMark results screen should now show both GPUs in the system.
  • Exposed Coolers Air Flow data in the Shop & Inventory
    #Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
Since the Dual-GPU update people have been bumping into the blue screen error that relates to the GPUs overheating, this is usually due to poor cooling in the case but there was no way to know which fans were better so this helps with this issue.
The PAEAN case is a special exception, we still need to find a way to adjust cooling for open frame designs such as this.
  • Another fix to stop 0 score 3DMark jobs from appearing.
  • Added an additional calendar to the wall near your office PC.
  • Monitor cables have been pinned down a bit to stop them coming through the screens.
  • Pressing the 1,2 or 3 keys when trying to search in the inventory should no longer close it.
  • Prices have had their font size increased in the shop.
  • Made some changes that should hopefully mean players (real-life) GPUs aren’t being pushed the max when v-sync is disabled.
  • Changed (again) how refresh rates are handled by default to try and fix issues with them.
    #Discussions_QuoteBlock_Author
If you need to select a different refresh rate could you please do the following:
    • Right Click the game in your Steam library
    • Click Properties
    • Under General click Set Launch Options…
    • Enter -window-mode exclusive and click OK
This should re-enable the option to select a supported rate by your machine in the options menu.

What’s Next?

Water Cooling is the main feature everyone wants, including us, which is why this work has now begun. We are however keen to make it clear this is not a quick update to do as we have multiple things to change in the game to support this feature and have a lot of assets to create to support it. You should expect it to be a few weeks before this feature is ready to go live.

We of course will continue to fix issues and add other content while this feature is being developed.

Thanks again for all the support and please continue to keep posting your bugs and feedback in the usual places!

Happy Building!

The PC Building Simulator Team
PC Building Simulator

Some people get their kicks jumping out of planes. Others roll down hills in transparent plastic balls. The most discerning, though, choose to occupy their spare time with system-building—giving digital life to loose components by marrying them together with their bare hands, then watching their creations show their appreciation by emitting RBG lights. If you can't see the beauty in that then get out and go back to your zorbing. Heathen.

Recently the art of PC building took a turn for the meta when developers Claudiu Kiss and The Irregular Corporation built a fastidious simulation of the activity. Shrewdly, they called it PC Building Simulator and it's quickly garnered an Early Access fanbase which I'm very much part of. The premise is irresistibly simple: construct PCs in first-person from scratch in a virtual office, running an IT support/repair business as you go. Buy components, get them delivered, put them in people's machines.

No small part of the appeal here is that as PC gamers we're perfectly positioned to judge the authenticity of the experience, to a degree that's rarely true of sims in this ilk. My Summer Car could be spouting all sorts of nonsense about building a car, for example, and most players would be none the wiser. Do you know where the halfshaft goes? What does a clutch cover plate look like? And as lovable as Euro Truck Simulator is, does it really feel like that to reverse-park an artic? We take the game at its word.

This is different. It's a home game. Many of us know the procedures for filling a case full of obsessively researched componentry very well, and there's something intrinsically fascinating about watching something you know inside out happening in the virtual world. Little things like the accurately rendered thumbscrews on case side panels. Forgetting to apply thermal paste before you place the CPU cooler. Hearing the fans whir into life when you hit the power button.

And for those who've never felt inclined to mess about under the hood, or were perhaps kept at arms' length by the complexity of it all, this is a way in. If you've never built a PC before, this game will undoubtedly help.

To an extent.

How? By repetition. PC Building Simulator teaches the basic procedure and its peculiarities. Not forgetting about thermal paste, installing RAM properly (down to the fiddly plastic clips at each end of the slot), and the basic order of component fitting. Frankly it's better to learn about frying CPUs in a cost-free simulation via friendly menu messages than it is by learning that smell.

...cable management is handled automatically so every PC looks immaculate by the time it's finished.

It can even shine a light on troubleshooting. If you power a machine on and something's amiss inside, you might boot to the OS and then get a BSOD when you try to run 3DMark. Using the message on that blue screen and a spot of Googling, it's up to you to fix whatever snafu you created inside the case. One of the most daunting aspects of system-building is the idea that a mistake might break hundreds of dollars worth of kit, so there's value in going through the motions somewhere free from consequences.

What this game can't do, though, is give you enough information and experience to go and build a PC in the real world—not without falling foul of the same mistakes everyone else makes. Hands up who's fitted their huge graphics card before attaching all the SATA cables to the connectors that are now positioned unreachably behind it? I'm putting my hands up. Who lost a screw between the motherboard and the case's mounting plate? Who tried to fit a big air cooler after putting the RAM modules in? Who bought RAM modules with fancy radiators whose clearance was way higher than their cooler? My hands are still up. Even though I'm somehow typing this.

PC Building Simulator doesn't punish you for oversights like this. You're generally able to make a cable connection regardless of the order you build in, and cable management is handled automatically so every PC looks immaculate by the time it's finished. And who could blame it for glossing over these details? It would be absolutely ridiculous to replicate the inherent fiddliness of the activity on such a granular level. Particularly with mouse-and-keyboard controls. Still, the point stands that nothing can prepare you for these frustrations—they must be experienced firsthand.

It might not be accurate to the Nth degree, but then FIFA's not that close to a real game of football

Attaching the internal power, reset and LED connectors to those tiny 1-pin mobo sockets with a manual in one hand, aiming for a 1mm target, is glossed over here, too. The same goes for losing screws, and forgetting which sizes went where. In a former life as a staffer for a PC parts magazine whose daily duties involved building and tearing down systems, I spent an entire morning in a panic having lost the case screws to a particularly expensive machine we had in on loan to review. Hands shaking, shirt sticky against my back, I eventually found them on the underside of a magnetic bowl we used to keep screws in so that they didn't get lost. The underside of a bowl

That's the reality of putting a computer together: there's always something. It's a simple task in many ways, and so much easier today than it was 20 years ago when case interiors were made from razor blades and 3DFX sharpened all their cards to deadly points just for kicks. But there will always be one thing you forgot about.

Please don't take the above to mean that PC Building Simulator isn't a useful tuition tool for anyone looking to get into system building: it totally is. But you should also be prepared to go through the looking glass into a world of fiddliness when you try it out in the real world. Of course, maybe I’m naturally and inescapably terrible at system building and you never had any of those problems once. Good for you.

There are two things that elevate this simulated experience over the real deal for me. The first is being free to experiment with a toybox full of components, many officially licensed and lovingly recreated, then loading up 3DMark to see how powerful your creation is. It's completely meaningless, of course, but I don't think the deeper recesses of my brain know that. They deliver the same dopamine hit as they would if I'd just upgraded my real rig.

The second is something I haven't mentioned till now, and that's the career mode. It's a by-the-numbers job sim in which emails trickle in, broken PCs arrive in your hallway in need of various repairs, and you order parts in to repair or upgrade them with, keeping a keen eye on your finances. Completing jobs levels you up, which unlocks new components and extra work benches. Simple. It's the kind of thing that's been implemented countless times in other games under different guises and it's still therapeutic and enjoyable.

It might not be accurate to the Nth degree, but then FIFA's not that close to a real game of football either. What PC Building Simulator does offer, though, deserves attention both from budding builders and experienced enthusiasts who want to simulate their hobby using the product of it. And since it's still in Early Access, who knows—maybe they'll add lost screws, jammed-in SATA cables and static damage down the line?

PC Building Simulator - WiZZyWiGG
Hello PC Builders,

As mentioned last week we have been working on adding Dual GPU support the game and today we are pleased to be able to release that work.

The initial implementation of being able to add 2x GPUs to your builds is now complete, you will now have the option to add a second GPU after the first when building a PC and if that setup requires a bridge it will then connect the two cards together.

Currently there is only the one SLI HB bridge type available (the EVGA one in the image above) but we are working with other partners to add theirs so you can match them better to your selected cards in the future. Flexible SLI/Crossfire bridges will appear where applicable.

As ever, this is Early Access and this is a new feature, so as much as we test things as much as possible it doesn’t mean you won’t run into a few bugs. Please do report these as you have been doing and we will fix them when we can.

Patch Notes:
  • Dual GPUs are now an option when building PCs.
  • The Tool Upgrades from Career Mode are now available in Free Build.
(When in Free Build you can find these in Freebuild Options menu when pressing ‘Esc’)
  • You can now reset your Free Build mode save via the option in the above Freebuild Options screen.
  • Fixed a bug with the Diagnose and Fix job that meant it didn’t appear correctly.
  • Fixed being able to remove the top case fan section of the C700P case before removing the actual case fans.
  • Fixed benchmark jobs appearing that require a score of 0.
  • Fixed an issue where the Auto Cable tool on the NZXT H440 case would connect the CPU fan to the wrong place.
  • Fixed incorrect CPU height data for the PAEAN case, you should now be able to install a wider range of CPU coolers.
  • Fixed the Purple + White NZXT H440 having the wrong colours.

Please Note: Some fixes will not apply instantly if a job or build is in progress in as save game when you update versions, they will need to be a fresh job or save to apply.

Please continue to post your bugs and feature requests in the usual places, there has been some really interesting ideas we are keen to include going forward.

Happy Dual GPU Building!

PC Building Simulator header

PC Building Simulator should really be called IT Support Simulator. You spend a fair amount of time doing the former, but your main role in the game’s career mode is to deal with varying degrees of customer complaints as soon as they plop into your company inbox – which I’m surprised still exists considering you start your new enterprise with -$15 in the bank thanks to your conniving uncle having scrounged it all before he handed it over to you , presumably so he could make his quick getaway before the authorities did him in for fraud.

As a result, it’s up to you to get your shop back in order, making enough money from client orders, virus removals and repair jobs to keep the lights on, pay your bills and gradually upgrade your workshop into the PC building dream palace you’ve envisioned since you first got a whiff of some that sweet, sweet CPU thermal paste.

PC Building Simulator - WiZZyWiGG
Hello PC Builders,

Over the last week we have been hard at work going through all the major issues players have been having since the last patch and today's update should go a long way to fixing up a lot of them.

Feature wise we are currently working on bringing Dual GPU support to the game and we are aiming to have this in your hands by next week should all go well.

With regards to additional languages, we have French, German, Russian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese all in progress and they should be available to use in the coming weeks.

Patch Notes:
  • Random jobs no longer stop when you hit level 20, they will now continue to generate but your level will not advance.
While Career mode will evolve in time, we know people didn’t always want to start a new game just to get new jobs so this helps with this for now.
  • You can now invert your Y axis for you mouse in the options menu.
  • PCI covers can now be sold for $0 so you can finally clear them out!
  • The temperature cut out for Threadripper CPUs was too low which was causing issues with machines blue screening before they should.
  • Alt-Tabbing should hopefully no longer reset your game resolution.
  • Alt-Tabbing will no longer skip 3DMark benchmarks.
We are aware that people liked this shortcut but it was a bug… we are working on additional stress test options to make this process shorter in some jobs.
  • The main menu should no longer become unusable when a save game is damaged.
We still need more help working out what is causing save games to corrupt, if you get a damaged save please send it to us on support@theirregularcorp.com so we can review it. Unfortunately if your save breaks like this creating a new one is the only real option until we find the cause.
  • Adjusted the way available resolutions and refresh rates are detected and displayed in the options menu, this may or may not help people not getting their refresh rate to stick.
This is a tricky one to debug, hopefully this helps people with the issue but feedback would be useful!
  • It was possible to get blocked in the Grandparent job if you originally built the machine with a motherboard that didn't support the CPU request later on. You can now swap the motherboard to continue the job.
  • Removed the time limit from one of the early tutorial jobs as it was possible to get stuck with the job if you didn't complete it in time.
  • Updated part checking so that the Job Status should detect part improvements more efficiently.
  • The Job Status checker should now be smart enough to catch when you try swapping the required component for a worse one before shipping a job back.
What kind of shady operations were you all running anyway?!
  • Fixed an issue causing completed jobs to have a red square with no message in PC Status which blocked it from being cashed in.
  • Cooler Master C700P fixes:
    • No longer have to remove the back casing to install the motherboard or insert the USB Drive.
