Beat Saber - mishi
Great news! A member of our community - @umbranoxus (on Twitter) will be helping us with Multiplayer development for Beat Saber. We'll start to work on Multiplayer after releasing Level Editor. Development of Beat Saber for PS VR will continue simultaneously.

First version of Beat Saber Multiplayer will be very basic, but we plan to continue with further development. First version will be a competitive realtime multiplayer, where players compete against each other to get the best score on a specific level.

Avatars of other players will be placed on player's left and right side. First version will contain default avatars, we plan to add custom avatars later. We're now considering how to represent cubes coming at the opponent player.

We’ve been a bit silent about upcoming updates in the game lately. Let's talk!

There are so many challenges you have to deal with when releasing such a hyped game title . Many times you can’t share any exciting news before it’s official, so it might look like you and the team are already gone to Bahamas .
Anyway, let's find out what we’ve been working on since the release.

Few months and weeks before an official Beat Saber release, we experienced a very intense push from VR community. We announced an official release date for Early Access version but we knew the game won’t be as perfect as we want. Postpone the release was complete nonsense, only way was to push harder and deliver Beat Saber on time.

We were so grateful for all the positive buzz around the game, but the pressure was insane. None of us ever experienced this before. Just incredible. People were tweeting, sharing and talking about Beat Saber and we had to be sure we deliver the best game possible only in the team of three people. On release day, the game in Early Access was working properly, but we were aware of a few smaller issues in code, which needed to be solved. We decided to release Beat Saber anyway.

And it was huge! The community and the whole VR world was amazed by the game and we knew we have to work hard to make it even better. We decided to get back to those problematic parts of the code and rewrite them. Soon realising it would need a whole refactoring of UI and editor code. To be honest, refactoring took us much longer than we expected and it still requires some more work. But the good thing is that from now on, it will be much easier for us to implement new features or deploy updates and make edits. Now we can focus only on a new content.

Here is only a fragment of what we have been working on so far:
  • Level Editor  — we knew for sure it has to work perfectly and look good. With the whole refactoring thing, not that easy tho.
  • Exclusive music content — truly one of our biggest challenges. We’re in touch with several global music labels, looking for fresh new artists. And since Beat Saber became a music platform itself, we decided to found our own music label.
  • LBE licenses — yes, if you want to offer your game to VR arcades, you have to take care of this aspect. Easy task? You bet it’s not!
  • PS VR demo for E3 — huge announcement we couldn’t be more excited about. Since it was top secret, we couldn’t share anything ahead. It required a lot of work and resources. Huge challenge!
  • There were conferences and many other events we had to attend.
  • And million smaller stuff. When the buzz exploded, we had to take social media, marketing and press seriously. And when new team members joined, we started to take care of new offices, accounting, contracts, invoices, payments… you name it.
At this moment, we are the team of five and even though we realise everyday it’s still not enough, we love what we do and carry the same passion and excitement. And that’s all that matters. We hope you enjoy playing Beat Saber as much as we enjoy creating it!

Thank you for being with us and being understanding about the fact that not everything can be done in a day and sometimes the good things are just worth waiting for.

Our very first team picture. Yes, we are adorable… Petr (left) wasn't in the picture so we photoshopped him into the pic. #legit

This small patch should fix possible "black screen" bug on start which was caused by loading invalid config file.

We found a small bug in Beat Saber which causes black screen on start or the whole menu is in the distance.

An updated version of Beat Saber is on its way but in the meantime you can fix the problem by deleting settings.cfg file which is located in C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local Low\Hyperbolic Magnetism\Beat Saber\

The AppData folder is hidden so be sure that you unhide hidden files if you can’t find it.

Beat Saber

Star Wars meets Guitar Hero is the elevator pitch for Beat Saber, an Early Access VR rhythm game that's making waves on Steam. The game comes with a limited number of tracks but users can build their own, and an active community has grown at beatsaver.com, where people upload their creations set to songs of their choice. You can watch one such custom track played in the video above, and it's mind-bogglingly cool. It's the kind of thing that makes you want to go out and buy a VR headset on the spot.

The video, uploaded by Ruirize, starts of calmly enough, as he slashes his dual lightsabers at the coloured blocks in time to the beat. And then the music picks up and blocks start pelting him, coming in pairs in quick succession. In Beat Saber, you have to hit each block from a particular direction, so he almost looks like proper Jedi, twirling his laser swords to get the right angles. It's beautifully hectic.

It's a modded version of the game: from what I can tell some of the visuals, especially in the background, have been tweaked from the base version. It's filmed using LIV, which is basically a cube that you can project VR games onto, allowing you to film someone in third-person while they're playing wearing a headset.

Only marginally less cool is another video, below, in which one player has stuck his lightsabers together like Darth Maul. He's using ProTube VR, which can hold one VR controller on each end, essentially combining the two lightsabers into one. It makes the game a lot harder, but he's playing without directional slashing to make it manageable. Take a peek (and hat tip to UploadVR for the spot):

You can pick up Beat Saber for $19.99/£15.49 on Steam or the Oculus store. If you want to find out more, then Jack interviewed the creator here

We know you have been waiting for todays Beat Saber Level Editor announcement, but the truth is we will need some more time for this new feature. Several technical issues has occurred and we can’t guarantee you it will be finished this week.

Thank you for your patience! 🙏

🎧 Music creators, we’re looking for your original music demos! No remixes or mashups. The best one ends up as an exclusive tune in Beat Saber soundtrack with its own level. This new content will be free and of course the artist will get paid.

Hullo! John is preoccupied with wizards right now, so I’m taking over for the rundown of last week’s top ten on Steam. It was an interesting week, bringing back some welcome old games and slamming in some shiny new ones. Largely, it’s all about robots and survival.
