0.4.2.6 is live! This update addresses issues with saving and loading and the Halloween event rewards, as well as developments in the Hanouten Safezone. Additionally, various squashed bugs, quality of life improvements and the latest optimisations are included as well.
We have brought forward our release schedule this week to give a slightly earlier than normal patch in order to resolve several issues we understand are affecting many player’s experience.
Developer Comment: It is highly recommended to start a fresh game as some mechanics, craftables and items may be bugged or not be available if using out of date game save files.

0.4.2 is live! The Jaws of Extinction team bid you all chilling seasonal greetings with this latest Halloween themed update.
Running between 22nd to the 31st October, Halloween Jack’s cackles will be heard across the land of Eden Nadir. Worse yet, he has taken one of the game’s protagonists, Sophia Riggs, hostage! Earn points by destroying Jack’s pumpkins and scarecrows in order to find his lair. Fight against him toe-to-toe to free Sophia! More details in the post below.
This update features a major rework for the game’s install size. Following feedback from our Early Access launch, a consistent issue many players were having was with the overall install size and update time for the game. Following a flurry of improvements, the overall size of the game has been reduced by approximately 60GB. The time to update, as well as loading times for the game, is now greatly improved.
As always with major updates, 0.4.2 provides many updates and bug fixes. Several areas of the map have been expanded including the reimplementation of Burchett Dam, regions of the bayou and farmland expansions.
Developer Comment: It is highly recommended to start a fresh game as some mechanics, craftables and items may be bugged or not be available if using out of date game save files.
Seasonal Halloween Event
Halloween is almost upon us - and along with it comes all manner of terrifying nightmares. Eden Nadir is no exception. Halloween Jack has taken residence on the island this year - a true villain beyond all measure.
Word has it that he has kidnapped Sophia Riggs, one of the game’s main playable protagonists! With her fate in the balance, it will be down to you, the player, to face Halloween Jack and rescue the hostage.
To confront Jack, you will first need to search the land for Jack’s giant pumpkins and ghastly scarecrow effigies. These are the source of his power - smash enough of them and you will be able to find the hidden location of his lair (it could be in any number of locations!).
After amassing enough event points to find the lair by destroying pumpkins and scarecrows, prepare well for a duel against Halloween Jack himself.
Will you be able to save Sophia Riggs? There are rewards available for anyone able to beat the nightmare: early access to play as Sophia in a new game and thematic Sophia Riggs skin. Good luck brave souls… you’ll need it.
Install Size Reduction and Loading Performance
Since release into Early Access, we have been listening carefully to feedback on popular issues to resolve them as promptly as possible. One of the most daunting issues for many players was the overall size of the game and the install/update times associated with it. Since our release, we have worked hard to make improvements wherever possible. This process has included reprocessing unnecessarily high resolution textures, improved package compression settings, removal of unused assets and creating as many shared material instances as possible.
With all these optimisation techniques combined, we have managed to bring the size of the game down from approximately 90GB to approximately 30GB.
Additionally, the game is no longer being treated as a single .pak file. It is now broken up into 6GB chunks. With the inherent reduction in the project’s size and the chunking process, the game will now install and update much faster.
These improvements will also have a strong effect on loading times in the game. The game will now startup significantly faster (in most cases as soon as the intro videos finish) as well as generally improving the game’s overall memory usage.
Added
• Added 2021 Halloween Event. Collect points from pumpkins and scarecrows before facing off against Halloween Jack. • Added new Sofia "Caged" outfit, unlocked after completing the Halloween event. • Added quality of life feature to foliage that prevents it from directly clipping with the camera. Foliage will now fade out as it gets near to the camera. • Added new Thanatos outpost location in the North East of the current playable area. • Added New Salties Croc Farm location in the Bayou. • Added additional puzzle based weapon safes. Solve the puzzle to get the unlock code.
Updated
• Improved size of final package down to approximately 30GB. • Improved loading times and general memory usage. • Optimissed assets by instancing additional objects around the world to reduce the number of draw calls. • Cloth crafting time has been reduced from 5 seconds to 2.5 seconds. • Improved roadside materials to look better in the rain. • Liam will now recover vehicles for 1000 bucks. • Liam will now repair vehicles for 500 bucks. • Clicking the "Open All Recipes" button in an item’s details will now filter recipes that use that item for crafting. • Updated Xile ambush location, ready for camp placement and updated lamp post meshes. • Various landscape improvements to stop players getting stuck in locations. • Bleaksly Farm location overhaul, with new farmhouse puzzle and grounds. • Shared outfit skins will now show if available for that outfit, including all DLC skins.

Known issues & outstanding changes
• Game is missing left-handed support. • Swapping an item with a Jerry Can in the fuel slot on the quad causes the other item to be placed in the fuel slot. • NPCs can have ‘black beams’ coming out of their eyes when running the game using FXAA • Various performance related issues • Steel Arrows do not show in vicinity search like common arrows do. • Sleeping ends one hour earlier than listed. Thank you for taking the time to keep upto date with development. We will be discussing the latest milestones in development, what to expect in the next update, our breakthroughs in the game’s file size and new seasonal events soon to arrive.
If you enjoy reading these development updates and would like us to continue posting them between game updates, please leave a like below or comment as we always love to hear what you all have to say.
Performance
We have heard loud and clear from recent feedback that performance is the main thing holding back many players from fully enjoying the game. We want to make sure you all know that improved performance is now our highest priority and we have already been working on steps to improve. We are aware of stuttering that can happen, especially when an infected hordes arrives, and we are investigating methods to mitigate this problem in addition to other optimisations.
Project size and Update Times and Loading Times
We have pulled out all the stops (as well as long nights fuelled by tea and coffee) to address one of the major issues with the game - the overall file size and install time. Over the last week, we have dived deep into adjusting packaging configurations, micro-managing textures and working on setting up shared assets across characters and NPCs in order to reduce the game’s total size. The hard work has been worth it though as we have greatly exceeded our expectations on how much space could be saved. With all these techniques combined, the game has gone from being a huge 90+GB size to approximately 30GB in size. This means a total of roughly 26GB download for new installs on Steam.
Jaws of Extinction used to be packaged as one large .pak file. We have now managed to set the game up to use multiple pak files of upto 8GB in size. In some instances, this may help to reduce the overall install time when updating, especially for smaller patches.
These particular adjustments are not expected to have any radical affects on in-game framerate, but are expected to help to improve any memory-orientated problems experienced by some players. Loading times have significantly improved as well.
New systems
One of the latest systems we have been working on is the brand new skill system expansion. This allows players to modify skills using perks. Skills are broken up into categories, skill blocks, grades and perks.
Each category will contain multiple skill blocks and each skill block contains 4 grades: 1 to 4. Each skill block will have 10 available perks that the player can activate which will improve that skill in some way. A maximum of four perks in a block can be active at one time.
Take a look at the example image below for a clearer demonstration of how this works. The final in-game version will look similar with some minor changes.
Halloween Event
We will be running our Halloween event in game from 22nd to 31st of October
The aim of the event will be to locate Halloween Jack's lair and save a hostage. You will accomplish this by finding and destroying pumpkin patches around the playable map area to gather event points. Once you have collected the required amount of points the location of Jack’s lair will reveal itself on the player map and you will be able to battle Jack to save the hostage and receive your reward for defeating him.
More information on how to take part in the event will be released very soon, so remember to keep an eye out for future posts.
0.4.1 is live! Our first update since Early Access has arrived. This update tackles many of the initial issues players may have experienced in their first playthrough of Jaws of Extinction.
Additionally, we have started making meaningful changes to the structure of the game in order to bring down the overall size of the project - we know, it’s large right now, but improvements are on the way.
Eden-Nadir has seen various additions, including the re-introduction of an old, but newly refurbished, landmark: Burchett Dam.
On the subject of performance, we have had many reports of varied, and often low, performance that many players have been experiencing since the Early Access release. Improving performance has become a top priority that we are committed to addressing as promptly as we can. We will keep you informed of any updates which we expect to affect performance in future posts.
Developer Comment: It would be advisable to start a fresh game as some mechanics, craftables and items may be bugged or not be available if using out of date game save files.

It’s nearly here! Jaws of Extinction is right on the brink of entering Early Access.
Wednesday 22nd September 2021
At this time (just over three days hence) the game will become a fully fledged Early Access title and become available for everyone on the Steam Store.
Take a look at the timetable below to see what time the game unlocks in different countries.
0.3.11 has arrived! Introducing the new farming system - maintain lovingly grown plots of fruit and vegetables to sustain yourself. Once your plots are grown, they offer a bounty of food. However, starting from scratch isn’t always easy. You’ll need advanced materials, such as compost to grow with and glue to construct the frames. Additionally, this update aims at improving the experience for new players by guiding them to play in Driftwood mode first. All starting scenarios then unlock after playing through Sen’s quest. As usual, the update features quality of life improvements, bug fixes, and more.
Developer Comment: It would be advisable to start a fresh game as some mechanics, craftables and items may be bugged or not be available if using out of date game save files.
Farming
After constructing your base, it is time to start being self-sufficient and live off the land as nature intended. With two different sizes of farming plot and a basic composter, create fertiliser to use with your farming plots and grow fruit and vegetables to trade with or consume for your own survival.
Make compost with natural resources found around the world. All you need is some piles of leaves, wet mud (dirt) and poop! That's right, we now have a use for all those horse puckies generated from your faithful steed and any other horse tied up at your local safezone.
Planted crops usually take around 3 in-game days to fully grow with a healthy helping of compost and water. If your plot does run out of water don't worry too much, similarly to rain-collectors the plots will collect water when the heavens open up and provide a nice drink for your crops.
We have tried making all new interactable structures to be as easy and understandable as we can. Using the new wheel menu, add the resources to the station with a simple click of the button and the menu will show your levels. If the levels get too low, a pulsing icon will display above the station indicating something is wrong.
Remember to keep all your levels topped up and harvest crops for more seeds every now and then and you will soon be the next Leslie Tiller of Eden Nadir.
Start Scenario and Character Lock
When new players start the game, they will now be asked to begin the game in Driftwood mode playing as Amy. This is to ensure that any new players get to experience the game with some level of support.
All other starting scenarios and available characters will unlock after completing Sen’s starting quest for the first time.
