Quake Champions - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

I can only assume the makers of Quake Champions are bunny-hopping around the office, rocket-jumping off their keyboards. That would explain the flurry of activity surrounding the old-school arena FPS. Today’s update marks the first leg in Id’s recently-revealed roadmap out of early access, introducing a new playable character (one of the more irritating monsters from Quake 1) and returning the briefly-mothballed bots to service, along with some improvements to their murderous robot brains.

Over the past year, we’ve continued to monitor community feedback and viewership trends surrounding our Twitch Drop programs for The Elder Scrolls: Legends and Quake Champions.

We have amazing streamers who put in time, talent, and dedication day after day to bring their fellow community members entertaining content, and that is why going forward we are going to be turning off Twitch Drops for any streams that rebroadcast content or stream AFK solely to generate Drops for idling viewers (and themselves).

We will be reviewing all channels streaming Quake Champions and The Elder Scrolls: Legends. Channels that are found to be rebroadcasting content without first turning off Drops in their settings will be blacklisted from having Drops work on their channel. This change will go into effect as of August 3rd, 2018. All bans will be permanent and will prevent the streamer from drops for any/all Bethesda games, not just the one that resulted in the ban.

Thanks for your understanding. We hope you’ll agree that this policy change is for the best in being fair towards our community content creators, and to help the Quake Champions and The Elder Scrolls: Legends stream scenes grow. If you haven’t done so already, go link your Bethesda.net account on Twitch, check out some Quake Champions or Legends streams, and start getting Drops!

Chances are if you play twitchy arena FPS Quake Champions, you take your shooters a little more seriously than most. It’s an uncompromising game where knowing the ins and outs of every map is nigh essential. Enter the heatmaps section, added today to the Quake Champions site. Not only is it neat to poke around the living history of each map, seeing where players lived and died, but it’s genuinely informative, especially as you can filter by both kills and deaths to a specific weapon.

Update: While we were busy monkeying around with heatmaps, Id announced a bundle of new features and modes in this developer stream recap. We take a peek at some of that below.

Quake Champions - MortalEmperor | Bethesda
Quakers,

We have been experimenting with ways to help us grow the Quake community, and one way is to learn which of our advertisements and web content effectively bring new Quake players to the game. To be clear: our limited trial use of Red Shell in Quake Champions only gathers anonymous data, such as where new players are coming from or how many matches they played. This helps us work smarter to grow a stronger Quake community, built on players who will continue to play the game. The software does not collect any personal information.

That being said our players are our top priority. In response to your concerns, we’ve stopped collecting this data and will be removing the trial version of Red Shell from the game with a hotfix next week. We are still investigating how to use this technology in the future to help us grow and sustain Quake Champions moving forward. When/if we do add it back to the game, we’ll give everyone a heads up and explain what it is doing and how it is doing it, and any implementation will be compliant with our Privacy Policy and GDPR.

Update:
As of June 26, we have deployed a hotfix that removed Red Shell.

Quake Champions

Yesterday evening I shot a railgun bolt through three players at once in Quake Champions instagib and I can't begin to tell you how satisfying it was - especially when Quake's iconic announcer said how impressive I was for doing it.

Through Quake Champions, you see, the frenetic multiplayer delights of Quake have gloriously returned, albeit slightly buried in cosmetic loot boxes and character hero powers, which maybe will make more sense to me over time.

Anyway. I've been playing Quake Champions during the free access period over E3, and I've been having a lot of fun. It's with a happy heart, then, I tell you the free access period has been extended! It'll now run until 25th June.

Quake Champions

It’s been heartening to see Quake Champions doing so well. After the likes of LawBreakers failed to draw the crowds even during free beta events, was there even room in the market for an old-school arena shooter? Apparently so, as when Bethesda announced at E3 that the game was going free-to-play early (for a limited time), the servers filled up fast, and stayed full. They reckon they’re on to a good thing, clearly, as they’re extending the giveaway for another week. Tag the game now at Bethesda.net or on Steam and keep access forever.

Quakefam, your response to the game during E3 week has been amazing. Tons of new players have stepped foot into the arena for the first time to take their place amongst Champions, and we couldn't be more thrilled that you're having fun with the game.

Because of this, we want to give even more players a chance to join the battle, so we're extending free-to-play access until Monday, June 25! Play Quake Champions for free during this week, and after the event you can continue playing!

See you in the arena!

I’ve never been a Quaker. I’ve always thought a life spent pursuing peace and friendship through a religious lens was at odds with the Quaker’s requirement that you spend 5 hours of every day playing a version of Id Software’s hyper-violent shooter, but I won’t pretend to understand such ecclesiastical matters.

I just got myself all tangled up over something that’s quite simple, now that I’ve managed to spell it out. Quake Champions is an upcoming free-to-play arena shooter, only for now it’s in paid for early access. Except for right> now and up until June 18th – until which you can get free permanent access to the early access version if you download it and play at least one match. If you’re like me and have barely dipped your toes into Quake before, this seems like a good opportunity to fix that. (more…)
