In GreedFall, you are a diplomat above all else. What defines your character is how you deal with the unique situations your position puts you in, and the company you choose to keep. Think to consider your choices well, as each of the companions you encounter on your journey belongs to one of the many factions or guilds, with all the prejudices and ambitions this may bring.

Beyond the influence of their faction’s goals, each companion has their own personal quests. Ignore them for too long and they may decide to leave you. Help them, and you could have an ally – or lover – for life. Your companions will notice what you say and do, so consider their reactions before committing to a decision.



Think carefully when picking which two companions to bring with you, as each have unique skills to offer. If you suspect a challenging fight ahead, consider bringing along Coin Guard mercenary Kurt, who can be kitted out as a tough front-line warrior. Outside of combat, be cautious when entering diplomacy with a faction one of your companions are antagonistic with.

Your choices will shape the world, along with the lives of those in it.

Welcome back to our devblog series dedicated to GreedFall – the one-of-a-kind RPG developed by Spiders and coming to Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 10.
We’re taking a look at this new world, specifically created for GreedFall, with Sebastien Di Ruzza, Lead Game Designer at Spiders.


Develop your own fighting style

Forging your destiny and being free to progress through the world in your own way is crucial in GreedFall. You can resolve situations in many ways and combat isn’t always the best solution. Fights are sometimes entirely avoidable by using talents. If your playstyle is aggressive and you tend to prefer combat to other options, it can directly affect your relationships with other factions.



The skill tree is divided into three main parts: the warrior tree allows you to use all one-handed and two-handed melee weapons while also raising your resistance to physical damages. You are never locked into a path once you invest in it, and you are free to switch from one discipline to the other as you wish. Eager to focus on fire weapons, grenades or creating traps and blade coatings? The technical tree is the right one for you! Fantasy aficionados will enjoy the magic tree, granting access to spells (such as healing, or Stasis, a spell that briefly locks enemies in time) and magical rings for ranged combat.

The skill tree is open, meaning that it enables you to truly choose what to kind of combat you want to specialize in. If you are fond of both weapons and magic, you can decide what to upgrade in your skill tree and end up with a protagonist able to juggle between magical rings and melee weapons. Alternatively, you can choose to specialize in only one type of weapon or even focus on the sciences to get better at brews, potions, explosives, and traps.

Prepare and craft your gear for combat



During combat, you will have access to two sets of weapons which you can freely switch between. A wide range of equipment and weapons will be available, and through crafting, you will be able to further customize and enhance your gear to not only change their looks but also their stats.

Attributes raise passive stats and enable you to use better equipment and more powerful weapons. This enables you to re-specialize several times in order to mix up fighting styles and try different approaches to combat in the same playthrough. GreedFall encourages you to use your own personal approach to combat, thanks to customized equipment and the optional tactical pause.


Don’t forget your companions during combat

You can’t control your companions during combat in GreedFall but you will be able to compose a team to complement your own fighting style and approach in combat. Every companion brings something different to the table and has their own archetypal combat style, along with a unique opening move and special attack. Companions will also advise you when you’re in danger or running out of mana. As you level up, you’ll be able to switch out your companions’ weapons, allowing you to further tailor your team to your needs. Make sure to have healing potions handy in case one of them falls in combat!

Choosing your companions is a crucial part of the combat but also the story. Consider your companions’ loyalties and faction before charging them into battle, since they might not always agree with your actions. You will be able to anticipate events more and have more options to resolve conflicts if your team actively supports you.

GreedFall

GreedFall, a pseudo-historical action RPG coming on September 10th, has a new gameplay overview trailer out today. And it is quite the overview, giving a mention to everything from character creation, to classes, action and stealth, and (oh yes) romance with party members. 

It's an ambitious list that, as some of the comments below the trailer on YouTube have pointed out, gives off some serious Dragon Age: Inquisition vibes. Not just for the smooching, either. The trailer starts off with the character creation screen, giving us a look at all the pomp, circumstance, and brass buttons of the fantasy island. 

GreedFall's combat system involves magic, melee, and a "tactical pause option" that puts the breaks on the fight and allows you to choose a target and ability. Hopefully that points to some good RPG fundamentals at play giving you the ability to micromanage the rest of your party during difficult fights. 

The trailer continues with a laundry list of other features including dialogue that can affect how encounters play out, skill trees that allow you to approach quests in different ways (like using lockpicking or crafted bombs), and customizable weapons and armor. It's a combination that will be impressive if pulled off, though I do wonder if it will manage to balance stealth action and RPG-style combat in a way that makes both feel like equally viable and rewarding options. 

Companions seem to play an equally important role. The trailer shows what appear to be some quest cutscenes where the protagonist is able to choose dialogue to encourage or stay the hand of their party members. You'll be able to pursue romances with them as well but if they don't care for your leadership style you may wind up enemies instead.

We pointed out previously that Spiders has a decidedly mixed track record, with The Technomancer and Bound By Flame falling solidly in the "fine" range, while Mars: War Logs was more successful. That concern remains, though today's trailer does show much more gameplay than previous videos which were more cinematic. 

We'll find out on September 10th if GreedFall can put its systems where its mouth is in this tale of fantasy colonialism.

Creating your character and picking your starting skills, attributes, and talents is just the beginning when it comes to carving your own path on Teer Fradee, whether you choose to specialize or be a jack-of-all-trades. In addition, the deep crafting system allows you to customize equipment, tailoring their look and stats to suit your playstyle.

When resorting to combat, you can approach it in your own way: subdue foes with heavy weapons, use your rapier to parry and riposte with flair, or control the battlefield using traps and magic. The optional tactical pause menu allows you to choose your next moves strategically. Your party members will follow you into battle, but keep in mind that they are people with their own hopes, goals and motives. Say or do the wrong thing and their loyalty to you could waver, or even turn entirely.



Your decisions will shape the future of the new world and the old, and so GreedFall provides you with the freedom to make them. Don the armor of an enemy faction to pose as one of their own or use your diplomatic talents to influence the powerful elite; these are just some of the opportunities you’ll be given in GreedFall.

GreedFall is a fully fledged RPG in every sense of the genre. A massive variety of character customization in gear, spells, approach, and social skills are available. These are paired with myriad factions and characters, all with their own goals and agendas. Your companions will have their own thoughts on those, and bringing the wrong person with you on a particular adventure could have dire - and spectacular - consequences.



An in-depth crafting system gives control of how your character is geared to you. Customize every element of a weapon with its own look and stats, letting you mix and match a style for you taken from the many factions of the world. Every hilt, grip, shoulder pad, pommel, etc, is up for changing, so explore and discover the best loot for you.

Building a new world

Teer Fradee is a new place both for the player launching GreedFall for the first time, as well as the colonizers who have just arrived there. The island is a solitary entity, old and full of mysteries, encouraging players delve into its story and unveil its secrets. When building the Island of Teer Fradee as well as the Old Continent, the development team were committed to starting from scratch.

GreedFall isn’t Jehanne’s first time building a universe. While the creative process is complex, she finds it enthralling. Her first step is selecting a time and a place to act as reference. Environment is key, since it almost always dictates how people live and how creatures and plantlife develop. The economy, history, and spirituality underpinning this world must also be thoroughly considered.

Even though the most difficult part of the creative process isn’t populating the world with creatures and plants, it's still the means by which the player discovers the strangeness of the new world. The biggest challenge is consolidating all the creative choices made by the team.

More than an Island: a character

Cyril, Artistic Director at Spiders, explains that even before starting work on new concepts for this mysterious place, he aimed to approach the Island of Teer Fradee as if it was a character. He started by visualizing the Island as a person, imagining what they would physically look like, and what their story might be.


In searching for a visual theme for the emotions they wanted to convey with Teer Fradee, Cyril landed on the season of autumn. For him, autumn was perfect for Teer Fradee and a great choice for the imagery they wanted. With its golden light and dark shadows, autumn’s wilting vegetation is both a memento of the past and a portent of change. Reminiscence and change are inherent to autumn, making it perfect for illustrating what is happening on the island.

Everything serves a purpose on Teer Fradee



History is crucial in GreedFall, and creating a detailed timeline was fundamental to the storytelling. Everything that happened on Teer Fradee prior to the game impacts what the player is going through, and enhances the narrative, visuals, and even gameplay.



Teer Fradee is both a place, a vast space composed of numerous natural landscapes with intermingling towns and villages, and a character, with its own unique identity and wants. Spiders wants to ensure players understand that this entity has a personal history and identity, and that each place on the Island has its own reason to exist; be it cultural, economic, historical, or otherwise. As the player explores the many young colonies and native villages the ancient ruins and the holy sites that hum with magic, the player should get the feeling that everything has a purpose.

GreedFall draws inspiration from the 17th Century of our own world, with references to the era’s baroque art, music, fashion and architecture. Through the rich bestiary, distinct settlements and sprawling environments filled with secrets, Spiders aims to imbue players with a sense of wonder - much like that of the explorers, scientists and naturalists of the epoch.



Despite the historical references, the island of Teer Fradee is very much grounded in fantasy. For every fantastical creature, native village and colonizing nation, the team has conceived an origin and reason to exist in this world, giving curious players a deep history to delve into.

We spoke with Jehanne Rousseau, Main Writer and CEO at Spiders, and Camille Lallement, Lead Cinematic Artist, about the new world and its inhabitants created for Greedfall.


War and Peace… and choices!

One might wonder how the explorers, new inhabitants, and natives are all able to live together on the same island. Camille tells us that everyone on the island of Teer Fradee protects their own interests, and that understanding will come to the player naturally as they listen to the characters they encounter on their journey. There are people from all sorts of creeds, cultures, and backgrounds, be it religious fanatics, scientists looking for a cure, or natives divided about the future… and it’s up to players to decide what to do with this fragile state of affairs.




Relationships are crucial in GreedFall

Relationships with NPCs are extremely important in the world of GreedFall, and are at the core of the gaming experience Spiders wants to offer players. Choose who will be your foes, who will be your allies, betray them or even consider them as potential romantic interests! The player is part of a faction (the Congregation) that has always acted as an intermediary between different nations. Important people will listen to what you have to say if you gain their trust... or find a way to pressure them.


Weigh your choices carefully, since they may come back to haunt you several hours later. That’s what makes the adventure so exciting!

Players can compare outcomes depending on their choices and perhaps try a different path altogether!



Jehanne ensured the importance of companions by having interactions with them directly affect the story. Choices made throughout the game - how the player responds to companions, how their team is composed, and the way quests are completed - all will impact how different factions view the player, with various consequences.


Different people on the same island

The natives have an almost symbiotic relationship with their island. To them, Teer Fradee is far more than a simple home. The very land is sacred; like a divine, nurturing mother. At the other end you have the colonizers, with a far more pragmatic worldview.

Although not all obsessed with material wealth, the connection they lack with the land can put them on destructive paths, in the eyes of the natives. Even within the same factions, not everyone shares the same principles and ideals.



The culture and traditions are very different between the colonizers and the natives. The natives’ faith is akin to Animism and Pantheism, meaning their mythology is made up of stories and myths linked to specific places or landmarks: be that a lightning-struck tree, a hidden spring, or an oddly-shaped rock.

The natives have their own Celtic-based language, which Spiders created with the help of a linguist. For the team, having this unique language helped them keep the world coherent and consistent. The player isn’t forced to learn this new language, but it’s entirely possible that players will remember some sayings and expressions at the end of the game - it’s certainly the case for most of the voice actors and dev team right now!

We are delighted to kick off a series of articles unveiling more details about the making of GreedFall today – a one-of-a-kind RPG by Spiders, coming to Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 10.

We’re taking a look at this new world, specially created for GreedFall, with Jehanne Rousseau, Lead Writer and CEO at Spiders, as well as Cyril Tahmassebi, Artistic Director, and Camille Lallement, Lead Cinematic Artist.

How GreedFall came to life



The need to confront new challenges in a distinct universe impassioned the team, inspiring Spiders to dream up a unique concept and naturally leading to the creation of GreedFall. CEO and Lead Writer Jehanne Rousseau set out to create a more fantasy-based universe, totally distinct fromthe arid Dunes of Mars.

For GreedFall, Spiders delved into vast, open-air environments, forests, and lush greenery while avoiding the cliches of the classic medieval fantasy setting. The team also wished to highlight exploration even more than in previous titles. Taking inspiration from the 17th century, particularly baroque artwork, seemed fitting as an answer to both criteria.

The natural next step was to seek new reference materials to gain inspiration from; from artwork to literature. The team quickly built a library of material and references that resonated with the project, from which to stimulate imagination and creativity. This is really how the world of GreedFall came to life.


Spider’s inspirations for GreedFall

Countless books, movies and tv shows were studied by the whole team to create this new universe! Camille Lallement, Lead Cinematic Artist, also claims the team wanted to explore current issues, as well as some older ones that we may otherwise like to collectively forget. Key inspirations include the Miyazaki classic Princess Mononoke (1997). The animated film was one of the first references when designing the natives living on the Island of Teer Fradee. It also pushed the team to start considering ecology as one of the native’s greatest motives.



Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) was also a great inspiration for the general aesthetic, particularly the rich variety of outfits and equipment. Of course, modern shows such as Game of Thrones also provided some inspiration regarding political intrigue and complex diplomacy, even if that specific setting is very different in tone and environment.

Swashbuckling adventures were a fantastic source of inspiration in terms of narrative for Jehanne, especially those written by Dumas (The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Vicomte de Bragelotte). Historical events were also instrumental in building GreedFall’s world and narrative - Jehanne even read a book written under Louis XIV’s reign, about the contemporary Navy in order to find specific terms and understand how specific aspects of navigation evolved over time.



Artistic Director Cyril Tahmassebi lists sources of inspiration dating back to the 17th century art. Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Vermeer and even the Chiaroscuro technique of contrasting light and darkness were vital references when creating GreedFall’s visuals. The architecture, costumes, ornaments, lighting, objects, textures, atmosphere from this time all inspired the art team at Spiders.
