THQ Nordic has finally revealed that Darksiders 3, the tale of Fury's quest to rid our shattered world of the Seven Deadly Sins and the twisted beings that serve them, will be out on November 27. A new trailer showcasing the whip-wielding Sister of the Apocalypse in action was also released on IGN.
Fury, Rider of the Black Horse, will be the third of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to take the lead in a Darksiders game, following War in the first and Death in the second. I always thought Famine was the F-named horseman, but I suppose that might be a little limiting in the context of action-adventure gameplay. (Condemning enemies to a slow, lingering death with burned fields and drought-ravaged crops does not exactly make for high-intensity button-mashing.) And it's not as though videogames have a well-established history of cleaving closely to source material, right?
The story isn't exactly heavyweight literary drama anyway—"The Charred Council calls upon Fury to battle from the heights of heaven down through the depths of hell in a quest to restore the balance and prove that she is the most powerful of the Horsemen" is all the Darksiders website has to say about it—but the action looks good and Hell-on-Earth settings can make for some fun moments. And it's the whip-it-good beatdowns that we're really here for, so if developer Gunfire Games can pull that off, a little bit of narrative chop now and then will be easy to overlook.
Darksiders 3 is available for pre-purchase for $60 from Steam or GOG. Truly hardcore fans can opt for one of two special editions instead, the $150 Collector's or the $400 (yahow) Apocalypse Edition, which includes four figurines (Fury at 11" and War, Death, and Vulgrim at 10"), a large wall scroll-style poster and a Horseman amulet.
Two of THQ Nordic's biggest 2018 releases will be available DRM-free on GOG upon release. Both Darksiders III and Biomutant will be among the publisher's releases on that platform, joining This is the Police 2 and Fade to Silence.
It's an unusual move: during a period when DRM is increasingly important to major publishers, to push these games out with none is brave. They're also both single-player games, meaning they're especially prone to duplication and piracy.
But I'm not complaining. Darksiders III and Biomutant don't have set release dates but they're both expected to release some time this year.
For those unaware, GOG is an online digital retailer which prides itself on an anti-DRM stance. Owned by the same company responsible for The Witcher, the outlet has generally sold older games (hence the name "Good Old Games") or newer indies. It's traditionally been rare – though increasingly less so – for big budget, major publisher games to appear on it, given the anti-DRM policy.
As we lay 2017 to rest, let us remember all of the wonderful games that flickered across our screens and occupied our hearts and minds. But now we must promise never to think of them again because times have changed. This is 2018 and if we’ve learned one thing from the few hours we’ve spent in it it’s that there are games everywhere>. Every firework that exploded in the many midnights of New Year’s celebrations was stuffed with games and they were still raining down across the world this morning. We cannot stop them, we cannot contain them, but we can> attempt to understand them.
Hundreds of them will be worth our time and attention, but we’ve selected a few of the ones that excite us most as we prepare for another year of splendid PC gaming. There’s something for everyone, from Aunt Maude, the military genius, to merry Ian Rogue, the man who hates permadeath and procedural generation with a passion.
THQ Nordic has unveiled a couple of minutes of new Darksiders 3 footage, the first to be shown since its announcement and gameplay reveal in May.
Darksiders 3 follows a similar combat-heavy third-person action adventure template to its predecessors, but this time places a new protagonist - the "unpredictable and enigmatic" Fury - front and centre. So far, each of the Darksiders games has followed the tribulations of a different member of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, and with Death, War, and now Fury accounted for, that just leaves Strife to go.
"Earth is now overrun by the Seven Deadly Sins and the mystical creatures and degenerated beings that serve them," says publisher THQ Nordic of Darksiders 3, "The Charred Council calls upon Fury to battle from the heights of heaven down through the depths of hell in a quest to restore the balance and prove that she is the most powerful of the Horsemen."
After some speculation, THQ Nordic confirmed Darksiders 3 with a reveal trailer back in May. A 12-minute-long slice of in-game footage then followed which, being pre-alpha, looked a wee bit rough around the edges.
Now, a new gameplay trailer depicts a far more polished Fury flame-whipping and double-jumping her way around the suitably "ruined Earth" locale. And it looks lovely.
Have a gander:
With that, traversing the treacherous Hollows—a skeleton footsoldier-filled, lava-spewing cavity—looks tough enough, never mind being forced to go toe-to-toe with the odd Lava Brute as showcased above. I mean, for a beast that appears to lack a head and eyes, it swings that hulking hammer with some pretty determined precision.
Protagonist Fury is up to the challenge, though, with some elegant whipping and evasive cartwheeling. Before long, the Lava Brute is felled—but not before the cheeky beggar explodes upon death.
Working alongside Gunfire Games, most of whom worked on the original Darksiders, THQ Nordic said this of the forthcoming venture earlier this year:
Return to an apocalyptic planet Earth in Darksiders 3, a hack-n-slash action adventure where players take on the role of Fury in her quest to hunt down and dispose of the Seven Deadly Sins. The Charred Council calls upon Fury to battle from the heights of heaven down through the depths of hell in a quest to restore humanity and prove that she is the most powerful of the Horsemen.
As a mage, Fury relies on her whip and magic to restore the balance between good and evil. The expansive Darksiders 3 game world is presented as an open-ended, living, free-form planet Earth that is dilapidated by war and decay, and overrun by nature. Fury will move back and forth between environments to uncover secrets while advancing the Darksiders 3 story.
Darksiders 3 is as yet without a concrete launch date, however is expected at some point in 2018.
After being seemingly leaked by a rogue Amazon listing, Darksiders 3 was officially revealed by THQ Nordic earlier this month.
We don't have an abundance of information at this stage, however we do know that it's a familiar hack-n-slash endeavour where players assume control of Fury—a female mage equipped with a whip and magic who's set out to "restore the balance between good and evil on Earth".
Some of that is depicted in the following in-game footage:
As reported by the folks at IGN, THQ Nordic has now released the following batch of concept artwork.
Again, not all too much is given away here, however do give a sense the beasts, locations and tone Darksiders 3 hopes to portray.
Darksiders 3 [official site] was only announced four days ago but we’ve already got 12 minutes of gameplay to inspect.
The pre-alpha footage shows Fury, one of the Horsemen (horsewoman?) of the Apocalypse, jumping and rolling through a city that’s been torn apart by nature, fighting giant crabs, horned red monstrosities and finally Sloth, one of the Seven Deadly Sins. He’s basically a massive, bulbous green bug with a club that looks like it could take your head off in a single swing. … [visit site to read more]
Darksiders 3 was first rumored, and then very quickly confirmed by THQ Nordic, earlier this week. It's a "hack-n-slash adventure" starring a whip-wielding mage named Fury, who's been charged by the Charred Council with hunting down the Seven Deadly Sins, who have taken up residence on an apocalypto'ed planet Earth. It's not expected to be ready for release until sometime in 2018, but thanks to the magic of "pre-alpha" gameplay footage on IGN, we can get a look at what's in store right now.
The environments look fairly standard as far as the "ruined Earth" motif goes, but Fury whips it real good, using her glowing red strap o' demon leather to beat bad guys into submission, and also to swing between hard-to-reach locations. She's got some pretty good acrobatic moves too.
The video culminates in a throw-down with Sloth, "Lord of the Flies," who is literally an infernal manifestation of "Don't make me get out of this chair." It doesn't go super-well at first, but Fury eventually finds her rhythm and delivers a beatdown of the apocalypse unto him. It looks and feels unfinished, yes, but that's presumably because it is unfinished—this is all pre-alpha footage, recall, so there's still a lot of work left to do.
