Fantasy shopkeeping adventure Moonlighter has had a busy couple months since its launch in May. Not content to just let stock sit on the shelves, developers Digital Sun have been quick to bring in new goods and renovate its dungeons, and today’s update has been its largest yet. Among other things, the ‘More Stock’ update bulks up environment variety and offers additional rewards for those returning to already-cleared dungeons, expanding further on a formula which John greatly enjoyed.
Developer Digital Sun has revealed that it's working on a sizeable amount of free new content for its wonderful shopkeeping-and-adventuring RPG Moonlighter, and there's an accompanying roadmap outlining exactly what 2018's remaining months will bring.
Moonlighter's first batch of new stuff arrives later this month in the form of the More Stock Update. This introduces over 50 new room patterns across the game's four dungeons (making for a total of almost 600 rooms), new art for enchanted weapons and armour, and new shop upgrade tutorials to give struggling players a helping hand.
That's followed at some as-yet-unspecified future time by the Adventure Update. This will see the arrival of a New Game + mode with a higher difficulty and increased challenge for experienced players wanting to play through again. It also brings new equipment based on mysterious technology, known as Dimensional Weapons and Amulets.
The shopkeeping-RPG Moonlighter was released at the end of May and turned out to be pretty good: A "cute and casual" mashup of genres that trades depth and complexity for a more relaxing roguelike experience. We said in our review that it's "meant to be completed and set aside," but players will soon have reason to pick it up again, as developer Digital Sun unveiled a development roadmap teasing big plans for the rest of 2018.
The first update will add more than 50 new rooms spread throughout Moonlighter's four dungeons, improve the appearance of armor and enchanted items, and add more tutorials to better explain shop upgrades. After that, a New Game+ mode is planned, along with all-new Dimensional Weapons and Amulets. Third on the list are companions who will join you on your journeys, and the addition of custom game options that will enable players to set up more "diverse experiences." And finally, the Trouble Update, which will add new mini-bosses and item effects that the developers don't want to talk about yet.
All the updates will be free (there's apparently also some "Winter DLC" coming that's meant to be paid, but the message suggests that might not be completely locked down yet), and while there's no set schedule for release, the first is expected to arrive sometime this month and the last should be out around Halloween. And if all goes well, that won't be the end of it: The studio said it has more updates planned for 2019.
Thank goodness you’re here! If you weren’t to read the Steam Charts today, you would DIE. (more…)
It took a little while to get going, but goodness me I’m hooked on Moonlighter now. Take a good dose of rogue-lite action-RPG, add in permanence of equipment, and then delicately smother in a shopkeeping sim. It’s a game about raiding dungeons at night, then working in the days to sell the loot from your store. (more…)
